I often pop in just to pick up cupcakes for myself but I buy my grand-nephew's birthday cakes here (he cannot have dairy) but his siblings love them too. This cute bakery has a mix of all the goodies and it's a family go-to for us because my brother has a peanut allergy, leaving him usually unable to enjoy baked goods unless they're homemade. ThimbleCakes is completely safe for my brother to eat though, which makes picking up a box of cupcakes an easy surprise to bring back home to him. They have so many different flavours to pick from, too! The cookie dough cupcake is a favourite. Other than cupcakes, the brownie is a chocolatey delight and their pumpkin scones are always a hit. ThimbleCakes boxes your goodies up nicely for you and will even add curled ribbon if you ask. We ordered our wedding cake from here. The process was kind of all over the place. I think the girl who was helping us, usually doesn't do wedding cake orders and was filling in. Never offered to try any flavours, so we had to guess at what it was going to be like with her description she gave us of some flavours. (We never ordered anything from here before, so not sure how things tasted.) We ordered one 2 tiered cake and one large slab cake. After we made our deposit, she offered 2 free cupcakes, which was surprising, because nothing was mentioned at the begining. Wish we would of tried something before placing our order. The day of the wedding, my husband and I were cutting the cake and serving the guests as they formed a line. We noticed some guests were coming up for seconds and some even coming for thirds. It was sooo good and moist. Probably can say it was the best cake I've ever tasted. I was nervous at first because we weren't too happy over the one really dry cupcake we tried the day we placed our order. This is one of my daughter's favorite places - so I get pulled in here every time we are in the area. Their cupcakes are beautiful to look at - and equally beautifully delicious. This visit I had one that was designed to remind one of those cookies with a biscuit on the bottom, then jelly followed by Marshmallow and all coated in Chocolate. I just moved into the village and have already been here twice! The cupcakes are definitely to my taste - the cake is moist but not oily, while the icing is light and fluffy. There's a Bridgehead just across the street but I like picking up a tea to go along with my cupcake. The customer service can improve a bit. The employees take your order with less enthusiasm than a fast food employee and don't seem to be very open to questions or discussion about cupcakes! It's a cupcake shop - I know if I was surrounded by cupcakes all day I'd be pretty happy or at least on a constant sugar high. Also, they should totally let you sample the candy. Thimble Cakes scored points with the little details at this little shop: - elegant seating - chandeliers - teacups - plated cupcakes with dessert forks We appreciate the little indie shops with gluten free offerings as a staple. My better half wife was impressed with the quality. She was very happy that the GF cupcake wasn't dense. While it wasn't necessarily light, she found it to be moist and beautifully presented. I'm surprised that there are so few reviews. We came away thinking Thimble Cakes looks very well put together, and very appealing. Presentation matters, as do the little things. read more

Helpful and knowledgable staff goes a long way! Having a gluten intolerance, I always have to ask about the ingredients... the woman I spoke with was able to answer all of my questions, which shows she knows the products - a win in my books! I tried the gluten free pumpkin scone and it was delicious! Moist and chewy and filled with pumpkin spice flavour. Also tried the gluten free chocolate chip cookie. It reminded me of a sugar cookie with chocolate chips - not my favourite, however, it was soft and chewy. Others I was with tried the gluten free lemon tart and thought the lemon custard was spot on. However, found the crust to be a little dry. It also didn't travel well... the custard slide out of the tart by the time it got home even though it had been boxed (the photo will show evidence of this) As for what they are known for cakes... I tried the gluten free chocolate lovers cupcake and it was sooo good! Filled with chocolate ganache and melt in your mouth moist - highly recommend, whether it's gluten free or not. I stopped in here, looking for a cute Easter dessert and they had some adorable bunny cupcakes that were an absolute hit. The bakery was super cute with a nice calming colour palette and French-inspired decor. There isn't much seating, but what is there would be a lovely place to enjoy a cupcake and a cup of tea with a friend. I also like that you can watch the baked goodies being made/decorated--that was kind of fun. The cashier was friendly and unobtrusive--she let you peruse the flavour offerings and was ready to help you out when I managed to make up my mind. The cupcakes were yummy and came in fun flavours. I ordered a cookie dough cupcake (last one of the day, because it's a big seller) and I don't think it tasted like cookie dough at all. Cinnamon cookies, maybe. Generous with the chocolate chunks, though. What I do like is that they reduce waste. They sell cupcakes that are a little messy at a discount and call them "Ugly Ducklings." Now this is a story all about how I bought a dozen mini cupcakes and gobbled down a few right after purchase. I got some in Honey Lavender and some in Lemon. On my first bite I did not find the cupcake special at all. Not richly moist or especially delicious at all. Just decent and the icing was nothing to write yelp about. Alas as lavender can be so satisfying! So as night fell I chucked the box in my fridge and said goodbye to a few dollars and put to rest my sweet tooth. The next day come tea time I dispassionately reached for the leftover cupcakes and voila! they were delicious. The temperature had made the icing ripe and flavourful and the batter was firm and moist. I am used to finding only one or two gluten free baked goods in stores even when I travel to large cities, but they had 7 different options including cupcakes, cookies, tarts, and scones! We ordered our wedding cake here. But they made a few mistakes. I emailed them with very clear instructions on some details since what we want is just very similar to one of the picture they have in their album. First, our name was totally wrong. Second, the height of the cake is too high but I did mention I want it lower than in the picture. Third, the color of the cake is not what they told me it will be. Instead of light pink, it's all ivory... The flower is not what I said to be started from the bottom(they only made it on the top)... I mean, if they can't do it, they can call me to clarify. Very disappointed when we first see it. And the cake doesn't taste good at all. But they are still friendly people and at least they change our name quickly, so we gave one star. read more

I found their bakery on a Yelp list gluten-free dessert recommendations in Ottawa. They make and decorate cakes and cupcakes for all occasions, and also feature gelato and warm drinks in store. You can place an order online, they are completely nut free, they can pretty much cater to any food allergy or intolerance (with gluten-free, vegan, and sugar-free cupcakes available whenever you walk in!). They are highly conscious of their ecological footprint, and that they do a monthly fundraiser for the local animal shelter. Talk about a bakery that warms your heart!! My friend and I happened to walk in behind a family with two young children placing an order for some birthday cupcakes. The lovely gal who was working today was extremely knowledgeable and helped them piece together a combination that the young boy seemed pretty excited about. Her enthusiasm was infectious! We spent the time perusing the gelato and cupcake choicse. We were lounging on an extra supple and cushy french provincial style couch, a piece completely in tune with the other furniture. It made me feel as though we were meeting for tea with the Mad Hatter -- a comforting yet fancifully juvenile feeling of bliss! (Perhaps an odd description, but this place has character!!) I had a gluen-free Lovely Lemon cupcake, and she had the Cream Cheese Carrot Cupcake. The price was more than fair ($3.20 for a cupcake, $3.80 for a gluten-free option) considering the wholesome ingredients, the freshness and the incredible taste. I loved my cupcake. It had the perfect icing-to-cake ratio (crucial!), was full but not dense, and baked to perfection, the outside barely crispy containing a spongy, soft, and airy middle. The lemon flavour was strong, but very natural and certainly not overwhelming. It was tempered by the sweetness of the icing and the slight hint of sweet corn (probably from the gluten-free batter). I absolutely enjoyed every bite. I don't have a single negative criticism for Thimble Cakes. They have a flavour rotation, which means that I'm definitely going to have to plan future visits on days that coincide with flavours that I haven't yet tried. read more

This spot is really cute, comfy and a bit quirky. The couches look comfy and it's usually pretty quiet in here, so it's a nice alternative to Bridgehead, if you'd like to support local businesses. There is a wide variety of flavours for all sort of dietary requirements. Additionally, they use coconut milk as a replacement for milk-- as a vegetarian, I appreciate the use of non-dairy products. Prices are really reasonable here too. The only fault here, is the service. Employees did not seem particularly interested in being there or they seemed to interested in other tasks, rather than helping me. The regular cupcakes are a little over $3.00 each with discounts if you buy 3, 6 or 12. If you want something smaller they also sell mini cupcakes for .85 that are bite sized. Yesterday's cupcakes are available for 40% off the normal price. The cupcake flavors change daily and include standards like red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, and more interesting pairings like caramel bacon. When I'm feeling indecisive I like to ask the server what their favorite is and go with that. So far it has been a good way to try new flavors and they've all been delicious. The cakes are moist and the frosting is flavorful without being overpoweringly sweet, which is just want I want in a cupcake. In addition to cupcakes they also serve ice cream. I haven't tried it yet so i can't comment on the quality but it's an option if you don't like cupcakes. First of all, let me just start by saying that I usually do really like this place and it's not exactly my pleasure to give a less than favorable review.....but I was quite disappointed today with the shop (particularly the Bank Street Location). Today was the 2nd birthday for the shop and so they were to host bday celebrations. The first thing that kinda irked me was the misinformation...this was the post on their FB page "t's that time again! We're 2 :) Please join us on January 9th between 10-3 for some yummy free cupcakes, ice cream, give-a-ways and some good old fun! (Both locations :)" So, that not being the case, when some people went to their shop on the 9th they were told that the celebration was Actually on the 12th so they were 'turned away' and I was told the staff wasn't even aware that the post on FB said that it was the 9th rather than 12th....not a huge deal but still, a bit of an annoyance. I went to the shop to see today what the celebrations would be like - they were few and far between....they were giving away mini cupcakes for sample (only 3 kinds) and ice-cream samples...again only 2/3 flavors.....needless to say, there weren't any 'giveaways' like promised in the FB post and I was surprised there weren't any good deals either.....there was only the deal that if you bought 1 dozen cupcakes you would get a free pint of ice cream.....not exactly what one was hoping for in the form of 'deals' I just wanted to say, that the shop deserves a huge congrats and props that they made it to 2 yrs and that they have been so successful and they really do have a good rep and a good product, but just a word of caution not to upset your customers or to actually 'give back' to them in these instances if you want to keep them/avoid bad press.... read more

Honestly, I won't go back. Was it bad? No. But it was overpriced and over-hyped. I ordered a birthday cake from the Bank Street location. They were friendly and helpful. And yes, the shop is comfortable, well decorated, clean. The problem here, it's way, way too expensive. I custom order cakes about once every 2 months and this time around I was looking for something unique, which is why I tried out Thimble Cakes. I asked for a banana cake and settled on some decoration ideas... When she said banana was an option I thought, hmmm sounds good. I also have to say I was expecting some sort of layered banana cream with nuts and/or fruit (or other accents that go good with banana). I was completely wrong. It was literally banana bread with buttercream icing. The banana bread was moist, but there was nothing it in it... just plain. (and it really didn't qualify as cake) The decorating wasn't all that amazing either. To top it all off, they didn't have a box that the cake fit into, which caused some transportation and storage issues... and no, the cake didn't make it to it's destination without getting squished by the sides of the box. I paid $90 for this cake. (was more like a $35 cake in my opinion). I've ordered cakes from chocolatiers that were roughly the same size, with 3 layers of cake topped with high-end chocolate and top notch decorating for $50. read more

Sugar-free versions are not immediately available in the store, but you can special order a batch. The cupcakes are moist, even the gluten-free ones, which surprised me. My experience with baked goods is that gluten-free usually suffers in the consistency department, but these ones come pretty darn close to being indistinguishable from the non-gluten-free treats. The frosting is just the right level of sweet and doesn't overpower the taste of the cupcake. It's also neat how each of the frostings has a different flavor. I thought I'd somehow - and mistakenly! - landed in Heaven the first time I had a S'mores cupcake. So I carried this melting cupcake across Ottawa on a hot summer day, waiting for the right moment to consume it (because it was too early in the morning to eat that much sugar when I walked by this bakery). Well...3 hours later, I sat in front of the National Art Gallery with this melted cupcake. I thought to myself, "I've probably ruined this work of art by now." And so, I planned to take a couple of bites, just so I didn't waste the effort I had made carting it across town. 2 bites turned into 3, then 4 and so on...and soon I was a horrible mess with icing all over my fingers and face and fellow tourists passing by watching in horror. I walk by this place everyday and am not a sweets fan but my partner is so thoyght this would be a great treat and a welcome to Ottawa! I bought a 6 pack of handcrafted cupcakes which to the eye had even myself drooling. The staff member serving me was prompt, friendly and very conscious of people gluten allergies along with all other dietary needs of clients. Myself i eat ALL! So i got a variety pack to which the bf was super happy with. Ive read the gripes that this place is expensive.....well duh this is a special place, may i even broach a speciality location. These items are handmade, obviously made daily (perfect moisture to crumble factor), and huge amount of options. My only gripe with the one cupcake i was allowed to have (i mean they were HIS cupcakes) was that i had a chocolate sort of cupcake and well....it just wasnt "chocolatey" enough......sweetness wise it was spot on but certainly needed an additional jolt of some chocolate to give it a deeper flavour (perhaps a tablespoon of espresso in the mixture to draw it out)? I ordered mini-cupcakes thinking they were just smaller cupcakes, half the size of a regular cupcake maybe... I was very surprised when I saw what I ordered.. for the price, they were the tiniest cupcakes I have ever seen. 1 bite and you are done. They should be called MICRO-cupcakes as 'mini' is misleading. Then I actually tasted them: the cupcake was good, pretty generic. The chocolate icing was also good. The signature vanilla icing could have been so much better.. They say they are allergy friendly, but put Earth Balance in everything, which is soy, and not allergy friendly. I am not allergic to soy, so I ate one, and it wasn't even good.
