These were the macarons I bought at Sweet Castle (top view) o_O
    Jennifer P.

My review is strictly for the macarons. So I got a Groupon here for 12 large macarons for $14 (the regular price is $18). The pictures of the macarons on their website look delicious and I LOVE macarons so I was so excited to be trying them. I called the store before going to confirm that they have macarons. I was told yes. I got to the store and was told to come back in an hour-and-a-half. I was a bit miffed, but figured at least I'd be getting some freshly made macarons. At least they weren't going to sell me some stale stuff. I come back an hour-and-a-half later and the macarons were there waiting for me. They were far from "large." They were the size of normal macarons. But more of a shock to me were their appearance. I have uploaded 2 pictures here on Yelp. You can see for yourself, but let's just say that I did not find them aesthetically pleasing. They did not look like the macarons on their website. In my opinion, the macarons I got did not look like they were made in a professional bakery but rather in the kitchen of an amateur such as myself. One was broken, the colours were all smeared, they were all different sizes (with one being not much larger than a quarter), and the filling was sloppy. Fortunately, the taste was ok. I got 4 of each vanilla, strawberry and chocolate flavour. The strawberry filling was by far the tastiest. It tasted like there were actual strawberries in it and didn't taste artificial. This was the saving grace. The vanilla was just ok and the chocolate was too dense. Overall, very average tasting macarons. The staff there were nice and polite, but I just can't get over the appearance of the macarons. They had a huge selection of Middle-Eastern desserts that looked very pretty though. If I'm ever in the neighbourhood again I might give them another try, but I would only be buying the Middle-Eastern desserts, not the macarons (unless they really step up their game). The bakery is in a strip mall, next to La Bocca Juice (same strip mall as Produce Depot). There's lots of free parking.

I came here after having some shawarma nearby and wanted some sweets to take away that garlic smell! ;) I got a spiky chocolate dessert and some of the smaller sweets by weight including one piece of baklava. The chocolate dessert was super rich and really satisfying with the mousse and was about $5 which is fair. The weighted desserts were quite sweet but I enjoyed the piece of baklava. Service was friendly and helpful!

Just a little door in a Mall. HA! Walk through that door and you're in Sweet Heaven. And the coffees are amazing. There are dozens of choices from the not-too-sweet to the holy-sweet-nirvana! It is small and only seats maybe 30 people, but comfortably. It is a bright and clean establishment and is now my go-to for coffee and a nosh when I'm in the area. The staff are amazing in that they don't hesitate to explain what each sweet delight is if you ask, and they will communicate down to the minutia what is in each and a little history lesson to go with it. If they are not busy, they will offer a sample. The coffee. Oh the coffee! It is awesome. If you're a coffee drinker like I am, one is not enough! They have several types to choose from. It is a quiet little piece of heaven in a very busy Mall. I recommend visiting to see for yourself how much more than baklava is in Lebanese desserts. Your eyes will widen with pleasure just walking in. All your senses are touched by their whole presentation. Note: There is a small but delectable selection of non-Lebanese choices as well.

a piece of cake and a fork

I don't know which was worst the dry piece of cake or the horrible customer service. As soon as I walked into the store the employee that saw me just went to the back for like a 10 mins, I was about to walk out but then she came back. I started to ask her for what I wanted and was told "Just a second, I'll be right with you" three times, mind you that I was the only one in the store. When she proceeded to grab the piece of cake, and grabbed the smallest one from the back that was only half the size of the regular piece. I confronted her about it and she just grabbed me a new one. She didn't even say anything, just stared at me. I paid and left. The cake was dry, service was horrible, things were overpriced. This will be my first and last time buying from here, not recommended, should have just went to walmart to buy their $5 cake instead of the piece of cake I got for $4.40

Choice of 6 pastries for $20.

I wanted chocolate cake and cheesecake. This place had everything but. Decided to take advantage of the 6 for $20 deal. Quality of what I chose was of good quality, but not good enough to make me make the trip from Barrhaven. If I happen to be in the area and am in need for a pastry, I will stop in to satisfy my craving.

The cakes and muffins are moist and tasty, but on the oily/greasy side and very sweet. The cookies are also tasty, but very rich and full of butter, and also very sweet. I know that "real baking" is full of sugar and fat, and this is how most people like it, but I personally prefer reduced-fat and reduced-sugar baking, lol. That being said, I can still appreciate full-fat and full-sugar baked goods, haha. They are a nut-free bakery, so if you are allergic to nuts, you need not worry about eating items here. And their (nut-free) carrot cake is really good! If I recall correctly, they put pineapple in it, yum! I didn't even miss the walnuts. The bakery is pretty and they have lots of ready to go cakes so you can pick one up last minute if you have to. Obviously you can also pre-order if you want something specific, but they do have a good selection of readymade cakes. Staff are friendly. Street parking only.

I was in the mood for a Sfogliatella (lobster tail pastry), so my husband and I went to Little Italy to get one. Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana has been around since 1979, but I had never been there before. They had a large selection of desserts and gelato. We took our pastry to-go, but they have some seating both indoors and on their raised front patio and street-level side patio. The Sfogliatella was $7.49 which is the most I've ever paid for this pastry. Fortunately, it was delicious. Very crispy and flakey on the outside and softer on the inside with a generous amount of cream. I prefer the ricotta cheese filling slightly more, but I like the cream filling too. It was light and airy and not too sweet. Service was efficient and pleasant. The shop has a one way flow, you enter one door and you follow the arrows and exit a different door. The area to wait for service is narrow, so this process prevents congestion and crowding. I like it. Great for the occasional treat, but a bit too spendy for me. (77)

I got 2 Portuguese egg tarts (Pasteis de Nata) $2.50 each, 2 cannoli $3.50 each and a cream filled horn pastry $3.50. I didn't like that none of the items had prices listed anywhere, so I had to ask how much everything was. The egg tarts were not fresh, as the pastry was all soft and chewy. The filling was sweet, rich and smooth though. I love Portuguese egg tarts for their flakey pastry with that crispiness to them when they are fresh, and I did not get that here. The cannoli fortunately were not soft nor soggy, but rather crunchy, despite being prefilled. The shell was a bit too dense and oily tasting for liking though. However, the filling was tasty. The cream horn was filled with a smooth custard, which I enjoyed, but I didn't really like the dry crumbly pastry. Overall, I enjoyed the fillings of the items I bought, but not the pastry. Service was neutral. I don't think they take credit cards because when I went to pay by credit, the man asked me if I had debit instead. The bakery is co-located with Syrian Kitchen. I saw some falafels and rice on display, as well as various dips and spreads in the fridge. No parking lot. Street parking only.

Now also known as SYRIAN KITCHEN (says on their new business cards)…read more Based on what I have overheard and read, this place is now owned and operated by Syrian families, employing some recent refugees. They have retained the Portuguese name and products from working with the previous co-owner. This is currently the only place you can get Syrian falafel in town. They gave me and my partner each a sample falafel to try - the falafels were flavourful, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I liked it much better than a lot of other falafels in town!!! $0.65 each if you were to buy. Looks like they are made to order, or the pre-made ones are within the hour and fresh. We tried the Syrian falafel wrap ($6) and Beef steak sandwich ($7) and both were delicious. Don't expect the food to come super fast like other shawarma-type places because they don't have an assembly line. For the beef steak sandwich, they sauteed mushrooms and onions along with the beef on their grill until caramelized, which took a while, but it tasted so homey and fresh. Beef was a little tough but the flavour was good. We got a bunch of natas (Portuguese egg tarts) and they were really good. $1.75 each. We also got a bunch of kibbehs (beef croquettes) - which I have just reheated and am eating right now on Day #2 - and they are flavourful and still juicy inside even after reheating. 5/5 would buy again. And of course we got extra Syrian falafels to go....because they're so good and we eat them like cookies (except healthier...I think). Lovely people, homey food at very reasonable prices. Cannot wait to come back again.

The staff is friendly... but slow and easily distracted. The cashier was taking a phone order while several of us were waiting, pretty unacceptable when another staff member should be able to take a call. We ordered a coffee and a mimosa. Well, they had to go back and check to see if they had juice... they did not. I asked for just the bubbly instead, she had to go back and check again. How do they not know or keep things on their menu in stock? Oh well, they had the bubbly so it was okay. For food we ordered a pastry and a croissant sandwich. The biscotti and pastry were delicious. For some reason, they decided to panini press the croissant sandwich. What the heck, who would do that? Why didn't they ask? Tasty sandwich, but completely ruined due to crushing the croissant. We were expecting it to come straight out of the case and at most maybe microwaved to warm it, not just destroyed in a panini press. Cool vibes, nice atmosphere, food is good, tea menu looks amazing. The almond croissant was mediocre. After being warmed up by staff, it lost any flakey taste delicateness that it may have originally had.
