I heard of it through a friend recently while in Ottawa. J was somehow very affectionate about it and so I started to get infected too. So, I agreed immediate when my sis offered to get me a cupcake to celebrate my birthday in advance, well, yes the different in time zone (Singapore) has delayed the day by 12 hours. We were at the Parliament Hill this morning to do the tour and head down to Byward Market for our cupcake. We were there once and decided to drop by on Tuesday for our all-time-fave Matcha Green Tea flavored cupcake. I know I am such a sucker for anything in green tea although green rarely top my choice when comes to apparel, bags etc, it just seldom mark my fashion color. I'd thought for the worst during lunch time, they may be sold out by the time I reach the bakery shoppe. No crowds. Only 2 ladies were seen eating their cupcakes and sipping leisurely at their coffee at the tall table near the window and another guy chewing down his fave quickly at the little bench table where the merchandise placed. We almost wanted to sit at the patio but were deterred by the cold breeze and so we have to squeeze ourself to the small tall table behind the 2 ladies. The bakery is more of a take out but there are 2 small tall tables with 2 chairs each and a 4 rattan seats with a round low table at the patio for the sweet toothed who couldn't wait to pop the cakes into their mouth. We have been eyeing for Matcha Green Tea cupcake since the week before. Since they baked certain flavours on each day, we marked our weekly calender for Matcha which is only available on every Tuesday. We asked for a combo which comes with a cupcake and a medium size coffee; a choice of Americano or daily brewed for $5.35. You saved a bit on that as it will cost u $6+ when bought separately. We went for that and have our cupcakes. The Matcha cupcake is indeed selling like hot cakes! They were running low when we asked and out of stock by the time we left the shop, barely 1 hour. The lady at the cashier was very friendly and polite when I inquired on the combo. The service was unquestionable except for the cupcakes. Somewhat disappointed with the texture, the cake was a bit stiff and dry. The matcha flavour was less noticeable. It reminded me of pound cake and more buttery instead of the green tea scent. The cake wasn't sweet by nature but more from the cream cheese frosting topping it. The cream cheese was quite smooth but I didn't enjoy the frosting which left a "sandy" mouth-feel. In general, I am expecting it to be fluffy but I am happy that the cream cheese frosting wasn't heavy at all. I am not sure of other flavours but this Matcha failed to impress me. read more

I sort of planned my evening a little bit smarter this evening and went easy on the Thai dinner we had, specifically so I could sample one of these delicious little guys. The cupcake lounge can be hard to miss in the market, while there's a ton of stuff everywhere. It's right beside Blue Cactus and is TINY. They have two really small tables by the window, but they were full when we got there. Four of us plus those two tables and the place was jammed. However, their cupcakes made up for it. I had a red velvet, since that's what Coy and Katie recommended. Holy crap it was good! Moist cake and super buttery icing and oh so pretty! It was hard not to gobble up another one. There wasn't a huge selection of flavours here - about 6 or so, but I'm a big believer in doing a few things really well instead of a ton half-assed. They're pricey compared to say, grocery store cupcakes, but I think $3 isn't bad at all for something so delicious! It's a small shop and if you're lucky you'll be able to snag a seat, but mostly it's a grab and go place. Each visit presents new flavour options, some (like one with bacon) I haven't had the nerve to try yet. However, my taste-buds have enjoyed the sugary delights of three flavours: cookies 'n cream, red velvet, and banana-cinnamon. Very clean, nice variety but not overwhelming, very friendly staff (incl the owner). Never been big on presentation but the cupcakes are beautiful and elegant. The consistency of cake is perfect, not too moist, not too crumby, perfect. Most important of course is taste and these are simply delicious. The frosting is creamy but not too sweet. I've been walking by this place for months and months and never bothered to stop. I had heard lots of good feedback from friends and colleagues so I've been wanting to try them out. Well, the hubby and I went all in and bought a box of 6 this Saturday. I really wish we didnt. These cupcakes are bad. For 1/5 of $100, I was expecting mothereffing Heaven in a waxpaper cup. I feel like for the same amount of money, I could have made at least 10 time this amount and they would have been much better. I mean, they weren't all that bad but they weren't expertly made, that's for sure. They were all very doughy (in a slightly under baked kind of way), very bland and kinda dry. And I'm just talking about the cake. While the frosting was very buttery, which is good, it was also very gritty, which is bad. It was also very bland as well, it just was very sweet, too sweet for other flavours to be acknowledged. We bought 1 red velvet, 1 lemon-coconut, 1 bourbon-butterscotch, 1 strawberry and 2 chocolate. We honestly wouldn't have been able to tell them apart in a blindfolded tasting, except for maybe the chocolate ones. OK. I gave this place 3 tries. The first time I went, I was really, really disappointed. I went in and the people at the counter were beyond rude. I asked for the red velvet and they handed it to me and put it in a brown paper bag. That right there upset me. A good quality cupcake with good frosting should NOT be in a brown paper bag. It should be in a cupcake take out container. I got into the car, took it out and took a bite. The cake itself was dry and COLD like it had been sitting in the fridge over night drying out. The frosting was hard and not moist and delicious. I was pretty mad I had spent $4 on a cupcake I wanted to toss out the window. I thought maybe I caught them on an off day went back again about a month later. Same deal. Cold dry cake, hard frosting and tossed into a paper bag. I went back one last time and when I mentioned about the cake being cold and dry I was just given a blank stare and again, it was put into a bag. Not impressed. This place is wonderful. Their cupcakes are absolutely delicious. They use real ingredients, such as butter, and flour, without all those disgusting additives like soy extracts. They don't overdo the sugar like a lot of places do. So you can eat the whole cupcake without feeling sick afterwards like other places where one cupcake has 100g of sugar in it. It is kind of pricey, but compared to other cupcake stores in the city, I found this to be one of the cheaper one, and the quality was much better. The cakes were dry, and the icing was like eating a stick of butter, it's as if they forgot to add sugar, disgusting. We contacted the store and they advised us to send an email and the owner would be sure to help us since we had spent a significant amount of money on these supposedly gourmet cupcakes. Instead of assistance or even empathy, we received a rude email from the owner telling us that it was somehow our fault that the cupcakes were not made properly? It was frankly quite insulting. I always like to treat myself about once a week and in the summer that tends to be a big greasy beaver tail... but ever since Cupcake Lounge opened, it's my go-to weekly treat! With good prices ($3.25+tax) and many amazing flavours to choose from (raspberry, carrot, oreo), my guilty pleasure hardly induces any guilt any more. We accidentally found this place when we were headed back to the hotel to rest after walking around. We were ecstatic to find a cupcake place in Canada!
