When we were planning our trip to Ottawa, I specifically checked to see if Guy Fieri had popped into any nearby restaurants. And lo and behold, Triple D indeed made a stop into Jax, which is about a five minute walk from our rental. So it was on a recent Tuesday morning that I popped in and ordered the Banana Bread French Toast ("House banana bread, served with cinnamon apple compote, local maple syrup, fresh whipped cream") for takeout. The food was ready about 10 minutes later and I was back at the rental and eating five minutes after that. It's really, really good. The French toast by itself is impressively not too sweet, but the when you eat it with the syrup and the apple compote and the cream, it turns into a perfectly balanced, super delicious concoction. I also got their ice coffee and we both agreed that it was far better than most ice coffees we've ever had. What an awesome little place. read more

Came for brunch around 10:15am and waited about 15 minutes before being seated. The restaurant is very small, sits about 22 people and the ventilation isn't great so I found that the kitchen smells got into my hair and clothes. They have daily specials which is always refreshing to see. We tried the double standard, mushroom on toast and Balderson omelette. All our dishes were fresh, of a fairly large portion size and came out pretty quickly. The highlight was the home fries. The only notable con was the pork belly with BBQ sauce that we chose for the double standard was overcooked--hard and stringy, almost impossible to cut with the knife. read more

Nice little spot in the local area that feels like a community restaurant. There is quite limited seating so if you have a large group the wait time will probably be pretty long. Because of the small size I think the wait times are highly variable just depending on who is in the area. The food is quite tasty and I enjoy that there are many different specials. I have the steak and eggs, which I thought was a great menu item on special. They give you a lot of choice to customize certain items. My item allowed you to choose call woke up to the steak was, if you preferred fruit or salad, and also how you wanted your poached eggs (soft, med, hard). Would for sure come back! How many downside is it can be a little pricey, and they often salad of some items quickly because it is a small establishment. Excellent brunch!!! One of the best I've had in Ottawa. Came here around 9:45 on Mother's Day and there was already a lineup. We waited about 30 minutes for an outside table. Service was friendly. They have a regular menu and a few specials to choose from. I ordered two specials 1. Poached eggs with smoked salmon on a bagel topped with dill crème fraîche. Side of fries and fruit 5/5 - fresh, creative and tasty. Potatoes were excellent with their homemade hot sauce 2. Blueberry ricotta pancakes with a huge slab of butter and maple syrup on top 5/5 - delicious, moist pancakes. So delicious! My partner and I each got our own meal and then shared these for dessert. Super decadent and yum. A few small things that could be improved: cutlery and cups could used replacing. Cups looked very used and knives were dull, making it tough to cut a bagel. Came here Sunday around 1PM and it was a full house but there was no line. We waited about 10 minutes for a table of two. I got the burger with a side of home fries (I believe you can also opt for regular fries, taro chips, or potatoes). The burger was yummy - gooey cheese, pea meal bacon, bison patty, caramelized onions and a perfectly toasted bun. It probably wasn't as good aa a burger joint, but still pretty good. My friend got the steak and eggs and really enjoyed it. Presentation was also on point. Service was friendly and quick. Honestly not as great as I used to remember it. Flavours were mixed with alot of extra herbs which can sometimes be great sometimes not. I got the Classy Benny House smoked and roasted ham, roasted peppers, zesty mornay, basil, house sourdough, poached eggs I don't recall the "roasted" aspect of the meal really but apart from that it was a good eggs benny - didn't quite enjoy the extra spices ans herbs but eggs were perfectly cooked and bread was good. Finally made it to Jax for breakfast. After hearing how busy it gets, I made sure to arrive shortly after opening on a Sunday to avoid a crazy rush. Service was quick and friendly- we were seated right away, got prompt refills on our coffees and waters, and our bill came shortly after we finished. I ordered the C'est Bon omelette and my mom had the Balderson omelette, and we split a side of pork belly. Omelettes come with home fries, your choice of fruit or salad, and your choice of bread. Mom had the fruit and sourdough bread, I had the salad and a buttermilk biscuit. The biscuit was so tasty, nicely crisp on the outside but still pretty light- not too dense, and well buttered. I would definitely have it again. The omelettes were good portions. I really liked mine- something about poached pear, caramelized onions and goat cheese with toasted pecans just seems so fancy. I loved it, and the pork belly complimented it really well! The home fries were good too- well seasoned and crispy on the outside. Yum! It is a really small spot, but I think that's great and creates a little FOMO and I think that's part of why it's always so busy and hoppin'! This is a great little place! The food is wonderful, full of great unique ingredients td that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. I had the Atlantic breakfast sandwich, with cream cheese, smoked salmon, a fried egg and gruyere cheese. Definitely want to come back here and try more things on the menu, plus, their coffee is pretty darn good! I have been back(only once unfortunately) and had the smoked salmon omelette. Sounds a bit odd, but it was absolutely delicious. There is a wait when you come here, but I have yet to be disappointed by what arrives in the plate. Definitely a gem! Didn't plan to go out for breakfast, but we are so glad we found Jax! One of the reasons we came is because my husband does not eat pork, and they had a decent selection with that restriction. It was fairly easy to find. The place had a very quaint feel to it. We were seated immediately. After ordering, our food came quite quickly. I was immediately surprised by the presentation of my steak and poached eggs. It had a lovely looking sauce underneath and beautiful pieces on top. I was impressed by the flavor. Although the medium rare was slightly over cooked, the steak was of a pretty good quality and the tart flavor of pickled items was fantastic with it. I was highly impressed. It also came with home fries (which was fairly typical, nothing too special) and a piece of toast. I'd chosen banana bread, and it was delicious. (not a good combination with the sauce and eggs, but perfectly delightful on its own.) Husband's omelette - Brie - was very enjoyable. He says it's definitely one of the best omelettes he's ever had in a restaurant. However, he would have enjoyed having more filling since the edges of the omelette felt lacking in flavor and everything was concentrated in the center. Definitely a place we'll want to come back to, though we are not in Ottawa much. We loved it and consider it a wonderful experience. I came here around 2pm on a Saturday, and they close at 3pm for breakfast, so there were lots of seating available on the patio and inside. I chose to sit outside as it was beautiful, and the umbrellas on the patio provided shade. Their menu isn't too large, but I suppose they specialize in a few dishes! I tried the salmon eggs benedict as well as the pork belly sandwich (a lunch item). The best part was that the food came out really quickly; probably only took about 10 minutes? Eggs benedict: the dill sauce was ample and very creamy and thick, I even dipped the homefries in them! The salmon was yummy, but there was not enough of it. Pork belly sandwich: the piece of pork belly was quite large (see pic)! Although it was tender, I wish it came with more seasonings. The top part of the skin was really charred so I scraped it off (which, thankfully, was easy to do)! I really enjoyed the thin and crispy taro chips that it came with. I wish Cajun chips are also an option (the ones at Kelseys are deliciously spicy)! Service was really friendly, the waitress checked up on me often, and offered to refill the coffee, which tasted fine. When I asked for more cream for the coffee, she quickly bought back a small bowl full (don't judge, I put so much cream/sugar it's as though I'm having coffee with my cream haha). We tried the Spicy Eggs, which consist of two poached eggs, sausage and potatoes, in a smoked tomato sauce, topped with feta and crispy onions, then served with corn fritters! We came into Jak's for breakfast. The waitress was very helpful in accommodating our large group. I ordered the Serge and Ben kitchen macs partly because they make their own bread. Our waitress recommended the molasses oat bread for the Serge and the buttermilk biscuit for the Ben. If you aren't sure what bread to get, I recommend asking the waitress what works best. I thought that they were solid recommendations. The Serge had a good quantity of bacon and thought that the bread went well with the rest of the sandwich. The Ben had strong mustard and I thought that it went well with the sausage. It might not be for everyone, but it was my favourite sandwich out of the two. I would definitely recommend getting the double and picking two different sandwiches. I liked the variety of the fruits that we got for the double kitchen. Jak's also had their own in-house hot sauces. I thought it was quite spicy but it added more flavour to the home fries. Jak's had great and speedy service with great recommendations. The bill even came in an envelope that I think was done for Valentine's Day. I would definitely return to come back another time. read more

Finally tried Jak's Kitchen for Sunday brunch yesterday. Arrived shortly after 10:30am and the place was pretty full, including the patio. It's a very small restaurant so seating is probably doubled in the summer with their small patio. Luckily, our party of 2 was seated right away, in the front window. The restaurant was VERY warm, but I'm not sure I can fault them for this, given that I'm 8 months pregnant and we've been in a 2-month heat wave. They had decaf coffee, which, you might be surprised, not all restaurants do, so this made me happy. I went with the scramble, which included eggs scrambled with veggies (red pepper and squash) and gruyere, home fries, choice of bread and greens or fruit (I went with the greens). As soon as I saw homemade jam on each table, I knew I'd be ordering the buttermilk biscuit which was one of the many bread options on offer (I love that they had so many choices - home made bread, English muffins, banana bread, biscuit, bagels, etc. all for the same price). Serving size was ample, and pricing was appropriate. My brunch date ordered the banana bread French toast which (I thought) looked better than it tasted. The serving size was quite large; in fact too large, for such a sweet/rich dish. I don't think she even at half of it before throwing in the towel. Service was mixed. We got our food quickly, but it took forever to have plates cleared and to get our bill. Granted the place was hopping, but you'd think they want to turn the tables a little quicker! I will definitely be back to Jak's for brunch sometime as there was much more on their menu that I'd like to try; omelettes and quiches just to name a couple! Comes with home fries and choice of fruit or salad. Home fries are seasoned with a mix of pepper and sea salt. Yum! We finally got to visit Jak's Kitchen for the first time last Sunday for brunch. Both of us ordered the eggs benny, which was pretty satisfying in terms of both flavour and portion size. I ordered the classic eggs benny, and though the hollandaise sauce was great, the poached eggs had fully cooked yolks which was kinda sad. I was ready to record one of those "egg yolk porn" Instagram videos, but unfortunately when I cut the egg open... no runny yolk :(! The rosemary bread was also a bit on the tough side. The first time I went to Jax, the waitress was inattentive, and chose to give service to others (i.e refilling water/coffee) and not our table. It almost seemed like she was ignoring us, and didn't understand simple questions that I was asking her about the menu. It was like I wasn't speaking English...which I do, fluently. Weird. The second time I went, the waitress was really nice and was attentive. She seemed new so she was unsure about some things on the menu, but she checked with the kitchen and got back to me ASAP. Excellent breakfast spot! This is a super tiny space with only a few tables so be prepared to wait during prime breakfast time on a weekend. The food here is amazing and definitely worth the wait. Everything is so fresh. I really appreciated how the breakfast potatoes were home made, it was a super nice touch as typical breakfast spots are using frozen bagged breakfast potatoes. Service was excellent with our waitress promptly bringing out our food and always being there for coffee top ups. love Jak's Kitchen. I am telling you all to go there. It is a wife and husband team who own and run the place along with competent and friendly staff. As far as location and the ethic of the place, I truly believe Jak's Kitchen is ahead of the curve, a nice small bistro in the heart of Ottawa's center-town located right on Bronson ave. Some of you may say Bronson and nice don't go together. Wrong. Thanks to Jak's Kitchen they most certainly do. Bronson is slowly getting a face-lift. The tell tale signs of the oncoming gentrification are all apparent, Jak's is just the first at the table when it comes to being up on the face that Center-town will soon be on the up and up. Get into Jak's and try out the menu. I have only had the breakfast which was amazing. I had the Don Francisco, made of black bean cakes, salsa fresca and roasted red pepper coulis. The black bean cakes are amazing. The two things I love about Jak's kitchen are the service level which is authentic, the second thing is the freshness of the food, you can taste it in every bite. Regrettably, I am not a fan of mustard, so the two dishes we picked were probably not the best choices we could've made that day (actually bf loved the steak sandwich, so it was just me, really). The banana bread french toast is out of this world! Seriously, I couldn't believe how delicious it was. My friend had the standard (two eggs with home fries, toast and a choice of one side- he went with the breakfast sausage) and said that it was good, but we both agreed that the french toast was by far the tastier option. As for the service: our server was warm and so nice! Our food came quickly and she stopped by often to check up on us, always with a smile. The patio is lovely, too! Jak's is a little slice of heaven in the middle of the never-ending construction of Northern Bronson Avenue. A nice, cozy little bistro that is known for its brunch, Jak's has options for lunch and dinner also. It is small inside, maybe sitting 20 people inside at a time. But, this couldn't be the place it is if it sat 100 people. It's just has this way about it. All their brad is home made and you can buy loaves to bring home with you. Naturally the rest of the ingredients are high quality and fresh. You can taste it in the food - delicious sandwiches with brie, collard greens etc. Tried and true breakfast options, and daily specials that will keep you coming back for more. Not a real hollandaise, rather a "diablo sauce", which was super bland, and on a very crumbly biscuit (the "popeye" benny). Good, but not approaching my fave benny of all time, the Manx. YMMV with the other benny selections. Good potatoes, but a bit sparse for me (but I adore potatoes, so I'm a bit greedy). Also comes with fruit or salad. My partner had the french toast, which was delicious, and someone else at my table had a 'mac' which looked great. All in all, still very good, I would just branch out from the benny. There is a board of specials as well. For a two person lunch it was around $35 (before tax and tip). I ordered an eggs benedict. It was not the best I've had and I generally like my eggs runny. It was definitely cooked through. I wish they'd ask me how I'd like my poached eggs. I definitely remembered it being better in 2013. It came with a side of home fries and choice of salad or fruits. I ordered the fruits but accidently got a salad. They mixed my order up with a friend's but we were a larger group of 7. I would revisit but it wasn't as special as I remembered it to be. My visits tend to land in the late morning/early afternoon, so I have never had a problem with seating. I've always walked in and had the hostess smile within a minute or two, tell me to sit where I wish, and then bring menus shortly thereafter. I always walk out with my belly full and a feeling of contentment, as if I've eaten just the right amount (even if I've just inhaled an entire biscuit, eggs benedict, potatoes, and fruit, as well as taken a few bites from whatever my dining companion is having). The gluten-free baked goods have a bit of the texture and weight that these products tend to have, but not the strange taste. I actually prefer these to some of the regular, gluten-containing breads I've eaten. All in all, this is my favorite breakfast spot in the city. read more
