I've been twice. A bit far from home for me but they get some decent bands and djs in on the weekend. Moody and lively in a good pub type of way. Hard to get a drink at the bar, I found on busier nights. Table service, ok. Clean. I haven't eaten here but I watched friends devour perogies and potstickers. They enjoyed them! I cannot say that I'm a huge fan of chain pubs such as the Heart and Crown, and they are never my personal first choice, but I actually had a positive experience here, all things considered. My husband and I had dinner here with another couple. They have a covered patio with heaters and that's where we sat. It was lovely because we essentially had the entire patio to ourselves (there was a single diner in a corner far away from us). It was the end of October so indoors was packed, but the patio was empty, at least for the start of the evening. As we were leaving, more people were seated on the patio. I got the buffalo chicken wrap with a garden salad ($17), and my husband got the cottage pie with fries ($18). One of our friends also got the cottage pie and our other friend got the butter chicken. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I asked for no ranch sauce and no onions in the wrap and balsamic dressing on the side, and I got all my requests. My salad was admittedly boring, consisting of romaine lettuce, red onions, some slices of radish, 1 slice of cucumber and 1 tiny wedge of tomato. At least the ingredients were fresh. I liked the dressing, it was tangy and delicious. I used about a third of the dressing provided. The wrap was good. It had chicken tenders in it, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and not sauce. It was a bit spicy, but not too hot. I liked it. My husband enjoyed his cottage pie, but stated the portion was small. The dish that the pie was in was shallow. It looked kind of like a Shepherd's Pie with gravy on top. I had a few of his fries and they were crispy. Service was friendly. For a chain pub experience, I was satisfied. And I loved that it was not crowded on the patio. Tables were well spaced out. The pub is in a plaza. Lots of free parking. read more

I was here a bunch of times prior to the pandemic for live bands and drinks, breakfast, after work happy hours, etc., but this review is an experience during the pandemic. My family was in from out of town and we came here at 11am on a weekday and originally wanted to eat out on the patio, but it was super humid, so we decided to eat indoors. Each household had to check in using the QR code at the front before being seated at the large table near the window. In addition to masks and regular cleaning, there are plexiglass walls to separate the tables, which made us feel better about eating indoors. We thought they would be serving breakfast, or at least give the option of breakfast or lunch, but only lunch was available. I ordered fish and chips with an extra piece of fish and a virgin Caesar. The fish was Ocean Wise haddock. The pieces were huge and I would've only ordered one if I wasn't splitting it with someone else. The beer batter was perfectly crispy and the fish was moist. The fries were crispy as well, though moving them from under the fish might be a good idea to avoid sogginess. It also came with coleslaw, two sides of their house tartar sauce, one of ketchup, and a couple of slices of lemon. The coleslaw was more on the vinegar side than creamy, which I like. Maybe I was dreaming, but I could've sworn the the tartar sauce was actually a thick Caesar dressing, but I didn't mind and it tasted good with the fish and to dip the fries in. The only thing is that I would've loved to use some vinegar on my fries, but the dish comes on parchment paper that looks like newspaper, and a woven basket kind of plate, so the vinegar would just soak and drip right through. The Caesar was nothing special, but a nice change from water, which I needed anyway with the amount of sodium in my food and drink haha Service was good and friendly, fast enough considering it was actually quite busy for a weekday. read more

I have only been here twice, once pre-pandemic, and once more recently, and this 3 star review focuses mostly on the food. The staff here are lovely and we have only had good experiences in that department. So, the food: pre-pandemic we went for dinner and drinks as a group of four. Fish and Chips, two Burgers, and Salad for mum. The food took a while and came with a slightly higher price tag, but it tasted pretty good (I know, contradictory)! The bad part, 3/4 of us (minus mum and her salad) felt ill later that night and the next day. I don't think it was food poisoning, but all three of us shared the chips (fries) that came with our meals so perhaps it had something to do with the oil? I don't know but it was not fun. Second trip was for lunch and we shared Nachos and a burger. I completely understand the difficulties that came with the pandemic, but the meals were a little odd. It's a smaller menu (no big deal) but the plate of nachos and the burger were soooooooo small (ok...) and not what I would consider restaurant quality. I felt like I was eating a burger at a work function BBQ where they are mass producing these things to get everyone fed. Of course, prices have also gone up (which is understandable), but it just felt disappointing. I realize we need to make cuts and the pandemic has been AWFUL so I want to go out and support our restaurants, but I also don't want to feel that disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure we will go back. Again, the service and staff are excellent, and the ambiance (inside and outside) is really lovely! We had the pleasure of hosting my Moms surprise 60th on the weekend and we couldn't have asked for a better time! We had reserved the outdoor heated patio and it was PERFECT for the occasion. We were able to decorate and set up as we liked. The thing that made our night one to remember was our server Josh. First time here at this location. I remember a long time ago feeling uneasy and unwelcomed at the original long standing location in the market. The reason wasn't choice but a pre arranged work function. I had the fish and chips and found them to be good. Nothing really award winning stuck out for the fish and chips. Our server was prompt to take orders and later checked up to ensure we were doing fine. Portions can be considered reasonable. I found out later there was a choice of either 2 prices of fish but I never got presented that option. To be fair I've only been here once and found it no different than the next place that's similar with a different name. What I will say is it smells like a gym inside. It's either the ventilation is poor or their ventilation system is hooked up to the Good Life Fitness located within the same plaza and is sucking in the air from there I found it to be an alright place. As I disclosed I didn't choose to come here. The question would be if this place sticks out in my mind as a place I'd like to go for the food, service, and atmosphere ... I really dont know that it would. Look for an update review if I get the chance to go back. Overall I found nothing wrong with the place but also found nothing spectacular either. I went to the Heart & Crown (Barrhaven) for the first time, expecting to have an enjoyable dining experience with my girlfriend. After being seated the waitress asked us (demanded) what we wanted to drink. Being non-drinkers, we declined to order an alcoholic beverage. The waitress angrily said, "I don't normally serve people like you. You have to order a drink with your meal." The waitress actually took off for about 10-minutes, probably hoping that we would have already departed by the time she returned to where patrons eat. After some tense discussion the waitress eventually took our order for dinner. While quickly walking away she bluntly stated, "I just take orders. I'm not responsible for your meal! Do you still want to eat here." Even though this restaurant only had a few other customers, it took almost forever (over one hour) for our food to arrive. When our fish and chips dinners did eventually show up, they were barely warm and not fully cooked. Even though I gave a very generous 20% tip, the waitress failed to thank me. As we were departing the waitress said, "You got a meal this time, but next time you won't be so lucky. Our tables are reserved for customers who order drinks!" Since my business wasn't appreciated and the food was way less than mediocre, I will never go back to this restaurant. Trying to force customers to buy alcoholic beverages is totally unacceptable and irresponsible by restaurants licensed to serve liquor. There are much better Irish restaurants in Ottawa that treat their customers respectfully. Therefore, given the inferior service and poorly prepared food I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone. I would have given a rating of zero stars, but that isn't possible when leaving a review. read more

I remember having good experiences at the Heart and Crown in the Byward Market. I haven't been back there in years but when I walk by the place always seems to be packed. When they opened a location on Preston Street I tried it out a couple of times and, despite the very good location and setup, I was disappointed enough both times to never go back. So, my expectations weren't high with the Barrhaven location and, all in all, I was about as impressed as I was with the Preston Street location. The setup is nice though it isn't very large. Service (from our server at least) was not that great with longer than acceptable wait times. Food was mediocre at best (nachos were quite a disappointment, wings not so much and the fish and chips everyone ordered weren't that great). Unfortunately, this seems pretty much par for the course for pub chains in Ottawa. I really can't think of any pub chain that offers a good environment, good food and good service which is quite unfortunate. Also, this being Barrhaven, there are not that many choices available as the other pubs in the area seem to be of equal quality (at least the ones I have been to). So, I personally don't find it to be a great choice on its own but if I were in Barrhaven and wanted to go out for a pint, I would likely still go back as it is about as good as you are going to get. read more

Last night Sunday, March 2, 2020 at 5:30 PM Anne & I went to have a small celebration for the purchase of our new home. This is a recap of our experience at the Heart & Crown Barrhaven. My wife and I have attended at this location about a dozen times over the last 2 years, especially for the Fish & Chips and the Seafood Chowder. With few minor exceptions ( 3 times one of the fish has been under cooked but resolved instantly) the food and service have been quite good. Tonight was a major failure and mishandled to the point we have decided not to return. We were showed to our table by the hostess who brought menus but no utensils. Our waiter was friendly and took our beer order which was followed by our menu order of fish and chips and seafood chowder. The Chowder showed up but still no utensils. He promptly brought the utensils. Chowder was great. Then the F & C arrived. My wife's fish was not COOKED. We were able to get the attention of someone other than our waiter who apologized and took the plate. Some 15 minutes later our waiter arrived to ask if we were enjoying our meal. I said NO as my wife had not received her meal yet. He was aghast, stating he knew none of this and left. He returned immediately with a new order which my wife knew instantly was not cooked. It hadn't even been fired. She asked the waiter what he thought and he, again, apologized profusely and left to correct. He returned a few minutes later with an excuse but we said never mind. He left and returned saying a manager may drop by and that he wouldn't charge for the meal. He returned again and asked if we'd seen the manager. We had not and asked for the bill. The manager arrived and blamed new staff in the kitchen and then the bill arrived and he was elated that they had comped the fish and chip. We replied thanks for not charging for a meal we never received. He looked puzzled at our response then the light bulb went off. We received a new bill and all he comped was my wife's beer. We paid the bill, tipped the waiter and i explained our dissatisfaction that they didn't comp her soup as well and that my evening was ruined as well. There was no reply. The hostess asked if we enjoyed our evening as we walked out but we said we'd never return. read more

Regular ish patrons. Good servers (not all) but the great ones make up for a lot. Kitchen is pretty capable for a pub. Curry is good try it hot. Needs little bits of naan. Beer was very good. We've only been here for lunch on weekdays, but we always really enjoy the food, and our service is always on point! The atmosphere is awesome but the food is severely lacking especially for the cost (family of four over $100 and without alcohol!). Market burger is adequate but not special, fish and chips is as expected for a pub but it's hard to screw that up, isn't it? Fries pretty good - a bit underdone. Club sandwich, meh (the focaccia bread is too thick - don't over think it chef, just put it on regular bread but for the love of O'Reilly, use REAL chicken - please!). We keep going back hoping to get something better to eat (the atmosphere is fun and it's close enough to walk to), so this time tried the Shannon salad and also the Apricot and Chicken salad. Both have what LOOKS like a nice, sliced and perfectly grilled chicken breast but the texture is NOT REAL chicken, it's pressed like deli meat (the cook marks are fake!). For the price paid, how hard is it to use a real grilled chicken breast? Or even shreds of real rotisserie? It was wet, slippery, and appeared under cooked, left me feeling icky all night worrying I'd get food poisoning (only ate a couple bites but was turned off). If you order the salad, ask them to leave the chicken off, cause otherwise it was edible. Same type of chicken is used in the Chicken Curry, which wasn't great and the beef stew is so-so. Probably best to stick with typical pub fare - fish and chips, chicken strips, nachos or burger - all of which are edible, tho not special. Service was spot on though, waitresses were polite and friendly (though skirts way too short on all of them - are they forced to wear them? they are not flattering on ANY of the girls - makes them look cheap to be honest). Problem is the place is always packed so doubt they'll change anything to make it better - it's busy cause it's close for a lot of people and there aren't a lot of good options for a nice looking pub in the area. :-( read more
