I recently hosted a 50-person birthday party atRoyal Oak , and the experience was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. From the planning stage, Riley, the manager, was a pleasure to work with. Everything was easy, clear, and well organized--exactly what you want when planning a larger group event. On the day of the party, the team had thoughtfully blocked off a section of the restaurant for us ahead of time so we could decorate, which made the space feel private, festive, and perfect for celebrating. And then there's our server, Celine--truly an 11 out of 10. I can't say enough good things about her. Drinks were never empty, platters were always full, and she handled a big, lively group with ease, warmth, and professionalism. She was attentive without hovering and somehow managed to be everywhere at once. Remarkable service. Great atmosphere, seamless planning, outstanding staff--this was a flawless experience. My friend and I decided to have lunch here at the Royal Oak. Spacious both inside and outside with an amazing atmosphere. The service was quick and awesome. The food was well-portioned and was absolutely delicious. The price was shockingly reasonable. The parking was the only drawback but that has nothing to do with the Royal Oak. I will positively come again and recommend this location to friends and family. read more

Four stars for beer, served nicely at this location by the bartender himself. He suggested an IPA from Vancouver (Stanley Park) that I really liked. Like all Oaks they serve Fuller's from London, which I like but is overpriced here. Two stars for food, average pub food. I dropped by The Royal Oak for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with my sister and her boyfriend. This place is very Cheers-like - kind of dingy with dated decor, but comfortable. We went during the Olympics, and all the screens were showing various events, leading me to think this might be an awesome place to catch the game. The server was attentive, if not overly friendly. We got the deep fried pickles to start and they were AMAZING. I mean, I love me some deep fried goodness, but these were seriously divine. Great seasoning and yummy dipping sauce. I ordered a yummy chicken wrap and the other two got the steak, which they both enjoyed, but neither was cooked how they asked. The one thing that drive me absolutely insane - flies EVERYWHERE! That and the fact that we had to wait quite awhile for our bill. I feel like this would be a great hang out place to have some wings and beer and watch the game. I wouldn't go back for a meal. Everything except the delicious deep fried pickles was pretty sub par and not really memorable. read more

I really like this location due to the patio on Wellington; great people watching! I sat inside since I went in the fall, and tried the beef beer pie and the poutine. I always like their pies since they're made fresh to order (might take 20-30 mins), and the filling is rich and hearty. The beef was a bit hard to chew on some parts, but for the most part, tender. The poutine has thick fries which I appreciate, thick, rich gravy, and curds, although they aren't squeaky, and they could put more. It was better than your typical pub poutine. Service was attentive and friendly. read more

The Royal Oak can be found throughout Ottawa, and I have no idea why. I suspect that they had a good idea somewhere, and franchised out quickly. This particular Royal Oak is located in Ottawa's Hintonburg area. Why does my division insist on having lunches here? I have yet to take pleasure in my time spent at the Royal Oak. If you must eat, they serve the standard pub grub, along with the to-be-expected pub beers. The service has been consistently horrible - uninspired and inattentive servers is the norm. I went from 10pm to 1130pm for a few drinks and some bar food. The service was almost non-existent. We would be sitting there with finished drinks, waiting to order another for ten or fifteen. minutes before a waiter would pass by. At the end of the night we were waiting for close to twenty minutes for the bill to arrive. They also don't put the price of drinks on their menu. You would assume they're priced like any other bar but then you end up paying eight dollars or more for a beer. Maybe we should have asked for the prices before ordering but I still think it's shady to not include prices on a menu and then charge a significant amount more than what similar places charge for the same drinks. On top of that, they charged us doubles for all of our drinks without telling us they were serving doubles. This is like the restaurant equivalent of negative billing. An absolute scumbag move. In the end we ended up paying seventy dollars (with tax, no tip) for a Keith's, a manhattan, a margarita, a daiquiri, and a fifteen dollar order of chicken fingers. We were expecting around 40-45 until we realized they gave us doubles for everything. read more

Been here a number of times over the years... as well as many of the other locations in Ottawa. It is a nice place to meet up with friends after some recreational activities - this particular needs a little makeover as it is looking a little tired. For the most part the staff are very good and ensure that your glass is not empty. They do have tv's to watch some sports - however the sound just doesn't carry over all the peeps who are having fun chatting... I was there to watch a hockey game and would NOT recommend this location to watch any sporting activity withy their current audio visual set-up. I have been here for breakfeast as well and very much enjoyed it, not too busy the times I have gone and the server super polite and pleasant - almost too nice! LOL Anyway, good place to grab a pint with friends - the food is your standard pub fare. Wings are good... a few of my buds think they are the best... Love this place! Serve is great! Friendly and welcoming, acknowledged us immediate as we walked in! We past by as we were heading home and saw the sign for baileys cake so we dropped in. The cake was amazing! Quiet place, and the beer was very nice tasting! Would come back again! The do have a full menu serve till late night! read more

Had dinner before GCTC next door. Had a nice table beside the fireplace - very cozy. The four of us enjoyed our dinners- Shepard's pie, Fish and chips, wraps with chips. Had beer and wine to drink - good selection. The service was ok but there was only one server for about 12 tables. She was run off her feet but did well. You get 15percent off your bill if you have theatre tickets. TVs were on but no sound which was great for Conversation. All in all good value. read more

We had a very bad experience with this place on St. Patrick's Day. This is the first time I have ever been prompted to write a Yelp review, but that is how bad our time at the Royal Oak was. Of course the place was busy because it was Paddy's Day, but our waitress, named Alexandra according to our receipt, was extremely inattentive and unfriendly from the get-go. There was a large group of us there enjoying the live music - family and friends, some of us Canadians with Irish heritage and some (in my case) that are born and bred Dubliners, excited to be spending our patron saint's day in Canada. My friend's mother had been the designated driver throughout the day, looking after everyone as our Ottawa host and tour guide, and as such she only began to drink once we dumped the car and reached the Royal Oak in the evening. She was therefore the most sober of us all. As moms do, she often ended up being the one making sure that everyone had a drink, or food, or whatever they wanted, so was probably the one calling on the waitress the most, which proved a frustrating challenge as she was an extremely inattentive server and often nowhere in sight for long periods of time. Despite this, we were in a celebratory mood and remained courteous and polite to her throughout. At the time that the waitress cut my friend's mother off from the bar (!), she had had 4 drinks over the course of about 5 hours and with food. We were absolutely stunned by this as all she had done was sit at our table enjoying herself. We can only guess that the waitress must have cut her off because she didn't like how demanding my friend's mother had been of her (shame that that's her job!). There was no other reason that we could think of. There were clearly more intoxicated people in the bar. Although I have to say that nobody, at least that I saw, was in any way out of control or unpleasant in any way. Everyone was in great spirits, except for this waitress, quite obviously. My friend's mother was quite justifiably surprised and annoyed by this and, when she challenged it, was asked to leave the bar. This was a pretty awful and embarrassing way to be treated. It soured and put an abrupt end to the day's festivities, which seemed hugely unfair as a giant table of us had given the Royal Oak a considerable amount of patronage throughout the evening. I felt pretty far from home, I have to say. No trace of Irish hospitality in sight on this particular St. Patrick's Day. We've been laughingly telling people this ludicrous story since, and it is safe to say we will never be back! read more

They need to change their fries. They are so thick! It's too much. It's like eating 5 full potatoes by yourself. They are all fluffy/ styro foam on the inside. Thinner is better. Plus, bring back the spicy lattice fries !! read more

Kudos to Brie and the staff for taking good care of us at the Royal Oak on Wellington. We were in the neighbourhood with family visiting from Scotland and couldn't have had better service. The drinks were cold and the staff was warm hearted and very accommodating even though we may have overstayed our welcome after having maybe one pint too many. Cheers! Brie, you rock. Visited in the summer but sat inside as it was starting to cool off outside. The inside is kind of lacking in charm. I know it's a pub but it just doesn't have that warm feeling I like from a traditional pub. They have London Pride on tap which can be hard to find sometimes, so it was nice to see. I tried the fish and chips and the fish was really overdone, and I wish I had replaced my chips with something else. Definitely frozen fries. I was hoping that a pub could do fish and chips right, but maybe they were just having an off night -- it does happen. Although, they did do something right--my boyfriend ordered the steak and it was good and cooked properly. Had a friend tell me that their steak and blue cheese salad is good, so we will have to try something new next visit. read more

First of all, you have to take the four stars in context. Context #1: This is Ottawa. Over all standards of food quality and service in this town are pretty low compared with most major cities. Context #2: Royal Oak is a chain, and so the menu offerings are the same across the board. In my experience, they range from edible to, in some cases, actually quite good. So why four stars for this Oak? I've been there a couple of times this week and was really impressed with the service. Both times I was there for quite a while, and my servers never stopped checking in on me regularly, refilling my water and whatever else. In much more competitive cities, this kind of service would be classified as "normal." But in Ottawa, it's rare to find servers really making an effort, so kudos to the management of this Oak for putting together a great team. read more
