I was in town for a concert in Ottawa at the Bronson Centre (neat spot), and we decided to kill time in Byward Market and eventually find food. Using Yelp is one of my superpowers so we settled on this pub after I waded through lots of options. I ordered their version of a French Dip and got a craft beer. The sandwich was excellent. I ordered without the carmelized onions but sadly they arrived on the sandwich anyway. I did my best to remove them and soldiered on and enjoyed a really tender beef flavor and a great au jus. Our server was very friendly (I mean, we WERE in Canada) and quick. It wasn't super busy while we were eating so maybe that had something to do with it - but no complaints here. However, most of the items were from the GTA, which was a bit disappointing as we are from GTA and had already tried most of the beer. So we selected the ones from Ottawa and the surrounded areas. - Beyond the Pale Yummy Pale ale - Perth Brewery calypso session IPA I liked the Yummy Pale Ale - refreshing with juicy citrus flavors and a pleasant kick going down the throat. For the food - their popular dishes, Coq au vin and Duck confit poutine were not available. :( We had: - Tuna Tartare & Chips $ 16.95 - Burger 19.95 The food is better than other regular pubs. For example, the tuna tartare were marinated with well thought-out seasonings to match their homemade potato chips. The burger uses the thick ground chuck beef patty with full of beefy flavor. A bit dry but the soft brioche buns, aioli sauce and veggies completed the taste and texture. It came with a generous amount of crispy & fresh French fries with skin. We were here around 9pm (Early September) so it was already dark. This courtyard space has limited lighting, so it is hard to see the whole design of this space. This is a great dinner place, we came on Friday around 7:00. We were almost immediately greeted by our waitress who gave us our menus. She asked what we wanted to drink and we got it very fast like under a minute. She asked if we were ready to order and we said yes, I ordered a Steak Frites. We got our food pretty fast and it was decent. Just beware if you get the steak its a smaller portion around 6oz. This restaurant is located in the chic downtown area near the U S Embassy. This area has several bars, restaurants and boutiques. We were seated and greeted immediately by our server Dan. He made our evening dinner a memorably pleasant one. Our table ordered Fish & Chips, Chicken and French Dip. All were extremely tasty and definitely not bar food. I was really surprised by this place. We stopped in on a Friday night looking for a later dinner. My partner had brought me here to try their Coq au vin. First, this is a pub - so food here I would expect it to be more like pub food. Second, it's near Byward market so I'm just expecting overpriced food. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find my pre-conceptions of this place were wrong. We had a baby tag along and they were very accommodating of the little one when I requested some banquette seating for more space and to lay baby down. The atmosphere was lively with a lot of people out for Friday night and the music was an awesome collection of chill EDM. Food/drinks were reasonably priced too. The Coq au vin? I really liked it - good balance of sauce on the chicken and nicely presented with some asparagus. I was unimpressed at the fact that i've now experienced the Brig Pub being closed before 2am on two separate occasions these past few weeks.... For a place that prides itself on being open till 2am every night of the week to serve the late night crowd, this clearly doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I tried going for some late night drinks around 1:30am this Wednesday and the doors were closed and no staff were to be found. A surprising lunch in the Byward Market area of Ottawa since we assumed we were going into an average everyday pub for run of the mill pub food. NOPE. We shared an appetizer of their nachos (again expecting single layer dry pub-chos) what arrived was anything pub, individually fried wonton chips with perfect layers of fresh toppings. I went to the Brig Pub yesterday for a Yelp Event (Meet and Greet with Holly O., our new Community Ambassador). Overall, I thought it was good. Holly got us some appetizers to share: the nachos and a pizza. And then I bought myself the Simple Salad ($9) and added on a piece of salmon (an extra $7). The nachos were cool and different in that instead of regular tortilla chips they used deep fried wonton wrappers. They were really crispy. They had fresh jalapeño peppers in them which gave them a spicy kick. The pizza was super greasy and you could see a layer of oil on top of it. I was not a fan. My salad was good. It was a mixed greens salad with cucumbers, grape tomatoes, pickled onions and puffed rice. Ingredients were fresh and I liked how the puffed rice added texture and crunch to the salad. The salmon add-on I got was delicious. It was lightly dusted with I think cornmeal and spices. It was cooked perfectly. Slightly crispy on the outside and tender flaky on the inside. I felt that it was a bit on the small side for $7 extra though. I'm glad I asked for the dressing on the side because it was too oily for my tastes. Too much oil, not enough other stuff, in my opinion. Andrea B. gave me some of her fries (thanks girl, xoxo) and they were awesome. Shoestring fries with the skins on are my absolute favourite and that's what they were here. They were crispy on the outside with a bit of chew on the inside and not starchy at all. Loved the fries!! I also got a Pineapple Mojito ($9). It was pretty good. Not too sweet. It's full of broken up mint leaves, so check your teeth after drinking it, especially if you're going to be photographed, haha. Our server was great. She was friendly, nice and attentive. I had a lot of questions about the menu due to allergies and intolerances and she was knowledgeable and double-checked with the kitchen. I like how they leave bottles of water at the table for you to refill your own water. When the bottles were empty, our server got us new bottles. According to my receipt, our server's name was Jen. Decor is typical pub decor. Although I heard that they will be renovating. Washrooms are downstairs and we're clean. I would go back to try other items on their menu. read more

I was impressed with this visit; I was not convinced that I wanted to be - based on an old impression of The Brig when they were in Kanata, a long time ago. This visit proved that my old opinion of the old location needed to be left in the past. Our event went from 5:00pm to about 9:00pm, and as Andrea and Spike mentioned - although there were a steady stream of customers while we were there, this pub was never so hopping-busy as to be uncomfortably crowded. That was amazing for a Market pub! One of the nice things about this visit were that we had an area all to ourselves for this event of about a dozen people in a side section of the pub, sort of almost private. We had a window, which was nice. The waitress was very attentive. I had a tasty glass of red wine with my meal. It was French, but I can't remember the name of it!! Nice and smooth, not too bold.But what specifically impressed me was the food! I have this "thing" for fish tacos - ever since my sister introduced me to "Tacofino" in Vancouver (which I highly recommend!) Now whenever I see this on the menu, I have to try it to compare to that. These fish tacos are served with a hot sauce on the side (which I avoided) - and they were pretty darned good! My former professor and I were walking around ByWard Market the day before I left Ottawa. He noticed the Brig and we talked about how intriguing the name was to him. It was nice seeing him again after four years. We parted ways a couple of hours later. I shopped around some more. I worked up an appetite and decided to visit the Brig for a late lunch on a rainy Friday afternoon. I sat down and looked at the menu. It is a British pub with a twist. One of the specials that day was a scotch egg with spätzle mac and cheese. It was all served in a cute black skillet. The meal was off-the-chain delicious! I thought that I had died and gone to food heaven! Who knew that spätzle would work so well as mac and cheese?! I wish that I had room in my stomach for the bread pudding. I didn't and absolutely love that dessert. Next time when I'm back in the city, I will have some. I loved the pub atmosphere in there. It's not all bad when you get to hear decent 80's music there, including Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence." I was definitely enjoying my meal and experience that day. We had two good experiences here over the last 2 days. Lunch on day one was excellent; my wife had a burger and I had the chicken and avocado sandwich with salad. Both the presentation and the quality of the food are above par for a pub, and while they don't claim to be a 'gastro-pub', they could. Service was friendly and casual at lunch but a bit aggressive at dinner. At dinner the waiters were fine but a hostess or possibly manager kept pushing everything along, to the point of grabbing glasses if she thought it was empty and we weren't going to order anything else. The place was busy but there were plenty of empty tables and nobody waiting at the door, so we couldn't see the reason for the rush and I actually chose to leave rather than order another drink because of the hovering presence that made us a little uncomfortable - we had drinks at our hotel instead.
