Dry, baking soda flavor with no syrup. The chicken was just boneless skinless chicken thighs in a bland batter. It was forgettable. Great pub, will keep going back. Bowman's burger is fantastic, one of the best burgers in the neighbourhood. Menu is a bit pricey, but every pub is these days. I was pleasantly surprised as a "Bar and Grill" is not the typical restaurant that I tend to go for but this place actually is fantastic! I got their Nut Burger with a side mixed of tater tots and salad. The nut burger was delicious and the patty had a very notable texture, glad this vegetarian friendly option exists. We also got the churro with Nutella to share for dessert and it was surprisingly authentic given it's not a Mexican restaurant! Very soft and clearly freshly made. Not overly oily either and the presentation was super pretty. The best part though is our server, he was extremely friendly and pleasant to chat with, def made our experience there! I had a tall task in front of me - choosing a restaurant to satisfy friends who have very different food preferences in an a convenient area of town. Of course, I went searching on Yelp to find such a magical place and, when Bowman's came up as one of the top-rated restaurants in Ottawa, it seemed to check many of the boxes! Located right off the highway and with parking, but not too far from downtown, with menu items like a pork belly sandwich and a large craft beer list. Although I later learned some were hesitant when I sent along the website and suggested dinner here, everyone was raving by the end of the night! The beer list was great - my beer-brewing husband got to try some really nice Ontario beers! We each started with a jalapeno corn bread muffin. There were not cheap but sooooo worth it! Several of us had the Bowman burger, which was a rich, well cooked burger with a sweet savoury bacon jam. I loved the style of fries. My husband enjoyed the Southern fried chicken sandwich, and my friend really liked the fish tacos. We had a great time chatting with the owner, who seems like such a down to earth guy. Way overpriced for Walmart microwaved food. It is the only place for a "pub" atmosphere in that area so the owners think they can charge more. It is definitely not worth the money. Found this via Yelp as we were outside our typical stomping grounds. Chicken and waffles were amazing! Had a taste of Hubby's burger and it was delicious. Very disappointed about this evening's service. Our server was unfriendly and rude. She never smiled, and barely spoke to us. I tipped her 20 % of my bill and she didn't say a word. I tipped to help during this difficult time. She did not offer me a receipt, or thank me, she just took the machine and moved on to my fellow diners. She did thank others at the table and offered receipts. I'm not sure what I did to receive her cold shoulder but I have always had good service from other servers at Bowmans. Burger was extremely tasty and uniquely spiced. Fries, again, were delicious. This time, I had the garlic mayo with the fries... unreal. Tomato soup was excellent. We popped in for a quick lunch. Had been here before and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Wednesday's offer "5$ off any hamburger" and that's just what my dining partner got. I got the Caesar salad with a side of hanger steak and oh my gosh it was delicious. They also make their own Cesar dressing which was extra cheesy and creamy. It was quiet while we were there, we got a seat by the window. Ample free parking, and the service was very swift. I was pretty surprised to see such high ratings for a seemingly standard pub, but this place certainly earns the five stars. From the kind and friendly service from Mike, to the awesome food (churros for the win!), this place was great. Jennifer P and I came for dinner around 6pm on a Wednesday night, and the place was dead, except for a few regulars who sat at the bar to watch the baseball game. They did have a few other guests pop in while we were there, but I'm betting this place is generally pretty quiet on Wednesday nights. Neither of us are beer drinkers, but they do have an awesome selection of local craft beers on tap, so be sure to check those out if you're a beer drinker. We didn't see a cocktail list, but Mike assured us they had plenty of liquors, spirits and the like if we wanted him to mix something for us. They also have a wine list. We opted to stick to water as we didn't want to waste calories on alcohol! We started with the chips and guacamole which was tasty. I don't know if the chips were made in house, but they were warm and crunchy and were perfect with the guac. It was very flavourful, but I almost wished their was a bit more avocado and less onion, but it was still really good. We munched away happily, as our salads arrived. The salad size was perfect, and all the ingredients were fresh and tasty. The big hit here was the dressing - it came on the side and was so good! It was dill (which I love!), and creamy and wonderful, and we actually kept some to dip our fries in as well. One thing I enjoyed here is that you can order two sides (I always have such a hard time choosing!), so while we started with our salad, I was also able to order a tortilla soup with my burger. The food came out super fast (likely due to the fact that they were so quiet), and looked positively awesome. I ordered the Mexican burger (this was my first time ordering a burger in a restaurant!), and it was amazing. The patty was cooked perfectly, and it was topped with more of the yummy guacamole, pico de gallo, yummy jack cheese, chipotle aioli and cabbage. The bun was from Rideau Bakery and was everything a hamburger bun should be - fresh, chewy and delicious. The tortilla soup was good, but not as flavourful as I expected. Maybe a dollop of sour cream would have been good. Either way, I still ate it up. For dessert we split the brownie sundae (a flourless brownie made with nutella!) topped with homemade ice cream (so rich and good!) and the churros. I hadn't ever tried churros before and I totally fell in love. I would come back here just for those! This place was so unexpectedly awesome, I can't wait to come back and try more dishes. They also have an open mic night on Saturdays, and trivia night on Mondays. This is an awesome spot in a community with few great restaurants. In town on business and found Bowman's on Yelp. So glad I did!! Walking in, Peter (the owner) gave me a friendly wave and made me feel welcome from the first moment. Decor was modern (love the lighting) and bench was comfy with a great view of the Jays game. Bathroom was clean. Started by checking out their diverse selection of craft and seasonal beers to suit any taste - ask for a sample if you're next not sure. While the feature sounded amazing (gnocchi with roasted red pepper) I went for the Bowman Burger and wasn't disappointed. The bacon onion jam and aged cheddar make this stand apart from regular pub grub. Perfectly salted fries and attentive service made for a perfect meal. The cappuccino was frothy and delicious too. Stopped by one day with my mom when they first opened and I had the chicken and waffles. The restaurant looks great inside, my dish was well presented and I was excited to dig in. Unfortunately my chicken was a bit under cooked on one side which I didn't eat and I was a bit disappointed. Flash forward to last summer and my boyfriend and I went for lunch with friends. We had the hangar steak and it was delicious! We definitely what to go back for the steak and I would try the chicken and waffles again. Andrea B. and I had dinner recently at Bowman's Bar and Grill. I've been meaning to check this place out for some time now and am really glad that I finally did! We went on a Wednesday evening and the place was pretty empty, which is surprising since the food is very good and there aren't many restaurants on that part of Carling Ave. Anyway, we started off with the Guacamole and Chips ($12). The chips were crispy and freshly fried, no Tostitos here! The guacamole was fresh and had a nice spicy kick to it. It wasn't overly limey or cilantro-y, like I've had at other places. I liked it a lot. I had the Almond Cashew Nutburg ($14) which comes with a side (I chose fries). However, you can also add a second side for another $4, which is exactly what I did (a side salad). Our server was Mike and he was incredibly attentive (without being too intrusive) and friendly. He was very knowledgeable about the restaurant and menu items and anything that he didn't know, he gladly went to the kitchen to ask. He asked if I wanted my side salad as a starter and then my fries with my burger. What a great idea! I took him up on it. The salad was a mixed green salad with grape tomatoes, and pickled red onions. It came with a buttermilk dill ranch dressing. I usually don't like ranch dressing but since I was told it was made in-house and it's their "special dressing" I gave it a try. It was creamy and tangy. It didn't convert me into a "ranch dressing enthusiast" but it was significantly better than most ranch dressings that I've had. Now their burger buns have sesame seeds on them (I'm not talking about a light sprinkling on the top bun, more like the top and bottom pieces are completely covered in sesame seeds!). Great for sesame seed lovers, not great for people like me who can't eat them. Mike recommended that I have my burger on their sandwich bread instead, and I happily accepted. The sandwich bread was thickly sliced, like "Texas Toast" and the nut patty was on the thin side, so I did feel that the bread overpowered the patty. I'm not going to fault them for this though because I was not able to eat the bun that the burger is supposed to come with, and so they just did their best to accommodate me. The patty itself was delicious. It was really nutty, and it held together well. I just wish their had been more of it. Like I said, I felt it was too thin. The grainy Dijon mustard that it came with complimented it well, as did the pickled red onions. The fries were shoestring fries and were super crispy. I loved them! Andrea and I shared desserts. We got the flourless brownie and the churros. The flourless brownie was dense and creamy and full of whole (or maybe halved) hazelnuts. The hazelnuts were softened by the brownie and so I found the texture a bit unusual. It came with ice cream on top which was delicious. Now the churros were the star of the night! The best churros I've had in Ottawa(!) Think crispy honey crueller pieces rolled in sugar and cinnamon. The outside was crispy and the inside had a bit of that choux pastry consistency, so slightly chewy. I am drooling just thinking about it. Now at first I was slightly disappointed that it didn't come with dulce de leche, but my disappointment disappeared when I tried the two dipping sauces that it came with - a sweet non-milky caramel and a rich dark chocolate. If you love churros, you need to try the ones here! The washrooms are clean but a little snug. However, I've been to restaurants with smaller washrooms, so it's not that bad. Bowman's is where The New Dubrovnik used to be. It's right across from the Royal Ottawa Hospital. There's free parking in their private lot at the side of their restaurant. This is the second time I've visited Bowman's. First time was with some friends for a late night snack. Got some desserts to go, and enjoyed them quite a bit. This time I happened to be in the area at lunch time, so I stopped in. I like that the menu is small. It's an indication that the food is made fresh, and that they're aren't trying to offer a little bit of everything. I always like to try something unique that a restaurant offers. After scanning the menu of "the usual" fare, I stumbled upon the Pear Grilled Cheese sandwich with walnuts. The soup of the day was Potato, Leek, and Cheddar. Yup, that sounds like a good combo! Food took more than a few minutes to arrive. Another good sign that it's made fresh. The sandwich was perfectly crispy. The soup was delicious. A little too much black pepper, but otherwise nicely seasoned. I will have to return once again to try other items on the menu, and save room for more dessert. read more

I love EVERYTHING about this place. Honestly, Bowmans does everything so well. Don't let the outside deceive you. I think I found this place on Yelp because it's nearby my home and had good reviews and I was craving a burger. From the exterior, I probably wouldn't be drawn in to Bowmans, but don't let it deceive you. Now, Bowmans burgers are the ONLY burgers I crave. First, the service is unparalelled. Mike, our typical server, is the nicest, most friendly guy. He deserves a raise. He cares about his job and his clients and it really shows. In fact, I suspected he was the owner for a while. The patio in the summer gets loads of sun. Nothing better than sipping an ice cold beer on a sunny day. Great patio. Decor inside is lovely. Exposed brick, a cool chevron pattern of wine above the bar. A great ambience, and a great crowd. It's a mixed group of people but seems to attract those between 30 and 60. Amazing food and beer. Like. The best. ABC brewing company is one of my favourites in Ottawa and a little hard to find, so I was thrilled to find out they serve it here. Funnel cake is delicious. The burger is easily the best I have ever had. It has the most juicy, fresh flavour. Seriously, my favourite spot. I'm a bit of a "foodie" so it seems unlikely my favourite spot would be a pub-type spot, but dammit, they do everything so well. Please visit this place. Tell all your friends. Was looking for a restaurant that was good for kids and happened upon the yelp reviews for Bowman's. Walked in and was a bit concerned as it wasn't very full. This ended up being a totally ridiculous concern. We were a party of 6 with 2 infants, and got greeted very warmly as though you were being introduced to new friends. We had the luck of having the owner serving us. As imposing as his stature was, he was funny, pleasant, and by the end of the evening was even holding our 4 month old daughter for a few laps of the restaurant so my wife could eat her dessert undisturbed. Felt less like a restaurant and more like the embodiment of the Cheers bar from television. So we liked the atmosphere, this much I hope I made very clear, but what about the food? I have memorized our entire table's order, if that says anything. We all started on the veggie nachos. I could tell I would like this place right away solely on this appetizer. I loathe nachos that have a big pile of chips where the top 10 chips have all the toppings, and a center of virgin chips are relegated to a bland and dismal life. This was not the case. The chips were all equally spaced out and dusted with loving heaps of cheese and pico, with a wall of beans cutting across the entire tray as though Trump was attempting to keep blandness out of the dish to make nachos great again (but F Trump, amirite?). Did I seriously write an entire paragraph about the nachos? I guess I did. Have the nachos. We had 6 mains, 3 of their signature burgers, 1 fish taco plate, 1 chicken and waffles, 1 pork belly clubhouse, 2 people had their soup as the side, 1 had fries, and 1 tater tots. Now, although all the dishes were drizzled with praise by the table, I can only speak to what I tried. My wife and I split the chicken and waffles and the burger. The chicken was wonderfully moist and crispy, and because they used thigh meat was rich and delicious. The waffle had a savoury aspect to it that worked great with the chicken and syrup. The burger though. As soon as I had my first bite I realized I had made a great mistake. I should not have split it with my wife. I wanted the whole thing. They must make it on a flat top because the crust on the outside of the patty was fantastic, and the burger remained juicy and flavourful. Their pickle mayo is very pickley, which was a boon to me but a bane to my wife who hates pickles(more pickles for me!), so we had asked for it on the side. This ended up being great as I then had ample pickle mayo to dip my tater tots in. Throughout the entire meal, the owner checked on us to ensure we were enjoying ourselves and the food was okay. It was at the point that dessert arrived that our 4 month old daughter started channeling her Miss Fussy-Pants. I was just asking my wife if she wanted me to walk her around a bit that the owner came by and asked if he could hold her. He had a 3 month old daughter of his own, so knew what he was doing. While my wife finished her blackberry cheesecake (which was great!) he took her for a few laps around the restaurant (change tables are in the men's bathroom btw). I have 1 regret about this restaurant, their terrase looks almost as big as the restaurant itself and I wish I had discovered this place during the summer instead of a nippy, rainy, fall evening. We packed up and headed out as they started setting up the live music, and made haste lest our now slumbering daughter get yanked from the Land of Nod. Our office is close by and our crew was so ecstatic when Bowman's opened up as FINALLY, there was a place that had craft organic beer, delicious food, great atmosphere --and a PATIO (where shoes are optional--private joke between Peter and I, lol). The food is fantastic! The Grilled Cheese with Pear sounds simple but wow, it is our regular go to menu item. I have branched out a few times and always the soup, tacos and burgers are amazing. I just read the review about the nachos and clearly I need to try them on the next visit (I had started to write off Ottawa's and nachos as every place seems to make the chips all soggy on top layer and charge an arm and a leg for guacamole on the side...will let you know about my nacho experience after next visit). We hosted our holiday luncheon there and Peter and crew (have to recognize the cook team even though Peter gets all the face time out front) were just awesome, as per usual. I love how personal he is. Have met his baby and I love that he will sit down and have great chats with us. We will miss our regular visits (only because our office is moving) and will be back for a patio shoe-optional visit in the summer months. :) read more

Had heard good things about Bowman's from some friends, so thought it was worth a try. Dropped in on a Thursday evening as a table of four, arriving somewhat haphazardly as snow and bad drivers had traffic snarled all over the place. It's a cozy little bar -- one big room with seating for about 60. Things weren't terribly busy when we arrived, which might have allowed for the casual and very friendly service from Mike, who showed personality and actually engaged with us as customers rather than simply reciting internal scripts. Nice selection of local beers, which is great to see, and the staff seem to take pride in knowing about them, which is also nice. A full house might have meant less attention. Food was mostly a big hit. Two hamburgers were very well received; the jerk pork medallions on a bed of mushrooms and pasta (which I had) was really nicely done (MAYBE could have been a cooked a fraction less); flavours were strong and balanced, a great dish, although in retrospect the Beau's Gruit beer I had probably wasn't the best match for it (maybe something more hoppy), and the one lukewarm response from our table was for the pickerel. The ice-cream sandwich dessert was amazing -- made-on-site boubon, bacon, and brownsugar ice cream sandwiched between two home-made chocolate chip cookies. At $9, the dessert is on a bit pricey, but you know what -- it's worth it. Overall, a total win for the evening, Will return. read more

I went to Bowman's to attend the first Ottawa Trivia League night. We had made a reservation earlier in the day and when I mentioned this to the server, he did not seem to know that they took reservations or that they should have been holding a table for us. Thankfully, everything worked out and we were able to get a table for 5 (instead of 6), and we weren't too cramped. But I do think that if you're going to take reservations, you need to make sure that when people show up with one, you remember that you took it. We sampled the churros, which were delicious and came with two sauces, caramel (yum) and a thin chocolate sauce. Having never had churros before, I was pretty happy to try something new, and everyone at the table said that they were excellent as well. I've never seen them on the menu anywhere in town, so just for that factor alone, Bowman's is pretty unique. The beer selection is not that large, with only a few local offerings (Beau's, Ashton Brewing Company). It would be great if they added a few more local beers to their list. I didn't eat a meal, but the menu looked pretty appealing, albeit a little pricey (especially for the dinner options). Maybe it's because it's just a stand alone bar/restaurant on Carling, but I thought their prices should be a touch cheaper. But perhaps the food is amazing and it's worth every penny - I might just go back to find out - and have another order of churros. read more

Admittedly, we didn't come in here with any expectations as we had planned on going to La Cabana down the street. However, I'm so glad we stumbled on this place. The decor is quite good- the high ceilings and large windows let lots of light into this little space. Their beer selection is not as large as other places, but their choices ensure that you'll have something interesting to try. I had their seasonal which was a local blueberry wheat IPA from the Ashton Brewing Company. I was pleasantly surprised by the menu offerings, too. The selection is pub fare, but the dishes have clearly been carefully crafted to ensure an original take on old standards. I ordered a crispy pork belly and turkey club while my boyfriend ordered a veggie nut burger. Both meals were nicely flavoured and perfectly presented. If you're in the area, give Bowman's a try. Got this for takeout. BEST mushroom gnocchi almost EVER! Friend had pork belly cheddar grilled cheese sandwich - super yummy. Fries were great. Deep fried dill pickles were also good (dip a little bland) GREAT service - kind and helpful. Thanks very much! read more
