Cocktails and beer menu

We were excited to try the Albion Rooms after reading some really great reviews on Yelp. We made a reservation through Open Table and opted to sit on the patio on a warm, early September evening. We started off with some cocktails which we were told were invented by the very talented bartender. We decided on the Disco from Jalisco and El Barrio Nights. OMG, I'm not exaggerating when I say the El Barrio Nights was the best cocktail I've ever had. I'm hoping I'll be able to replicate it at home. The ingredients are white vermouth, bitter apperitivo, salt and orange, garnished with a green olive. I don't know exactly what I'm going to use to replicate it but I have to try. It was bitter, sweet, salty and oh so delicious!!! My husband also loved his Disco from Jalisco which had tequila, Mezcal, lime, jalapeno, kaffir lime and Chartreuse. For dinner we started with the scotch egg which was amazing. The outside was so crisp and the egg yolk was lovely and runny. We then shared the charcuterie board, which was so yummy. For me, the stand out was the foie gras with fleur de sel on top. There were 2 kinds of salami (one was just a little too chewy), a lovely, creamy brie, pickled green beans, pickled golden beets, capers, dried apricots and some grainy mustard. Everything was delicious and we'd most definitely return to the Albion Rooms.

My husband and I came here to reclaim the nostalgia after going out to our very first live contemporary dance performance at Arts Court last week after two long years. I had a Scotch egg and a seasonal cocktail (I can't remember the name of it!) and he had a cheeseburger. We sat by the "fire" and it was cozy. There weren't very many patrons, either. The Scotch egg was delicious - crisp on the outside and ooey gooey eggy goodness on the inside. The cocktail was just my speed with a little bit of cranberry and citrus. I love the Albion Rooms and look forward to many more post-dance and theatre performance chats there!

You must order the scotch egg here. Very delicious with the crispy shell, savoury outer layer, gooey yolk, sweet purée... yummm. I would come back just for that. Also ordered the elk burger and while it was a good burger, it wasn't a standout item on the menu. The ranch sauce was what made it good. I have to give it to them though, it's not that gamey for elk. The wedges were just ok. It came with ketchup and mayo but they should do a ranch mayo instead. That would have been delicious! I also loved the ambiance there. Great for groups with the lounge area, comfortable chairs, dim and gorgeous lighting. Loved the decor!

I came here with friends to share dishes, as I was curious how the food had changed since the last time I was here. We started with a charcuterie board with 2 meats and 1 cheese. The duck breast was AMAZING. I would get a board with JUST that; it was salty, smoky, and hearty. The rilette was tasty, but was more like an average paté. As for the cheese, they give a good portion, so that went well with the rest of the board, which had a lot of pickled vegetables. It would be a good balance to have more sweet items (dried fruits, compote/sauces), as I found the board leaning too much on the sour end. Value-wise, I was impressed! We also shared: - 72 hour short rib: the best dish of the night; everyone loved how fall-off-the-fork tender this was, and the meat went well with the sauce and vegetables. The kale was my favourite vegetable with the meat, but the carrots were still a bit hard. It was a large portion, and surprised us all! - Tourtière with 4 kinds of meat: I was expecting this to taste interesting due to the 4 meats it had, but it was just better than average. The meat was tender, and slightly gamey (I like it really gamey), and not overly oily! The buttery, flaky crust may have been the best part. We also got a drink each; the cocktails definitely stand out as being unique; some are stronger than the others! Service was attentive. Next time I'll sit at the bar to chat with the servers!

For the service, food, and the ultimate price, The Albion Rooms deserves the 5/5. Nothing here blew my mind to the point where I was crying tears of joy, but that's not the point. The point here is that this is a VERY capable gastropub that looks great, has nice staff, and produces food to a high standard. Ultimately, for a loaded charcuterie board 4 drinks, and a 2 mains, being out around $120 (before tax) is absolutely reasonable and does this class of food and pub extreme justice. I will be returning.

Friendly bartender, great service, outstanding food, interesting decor, Ontario craft beer on tap--what more can you ask for? Short ribs with Yorkshire Pudding was melt in your mouth delicious. I had risotto with peas, white wine and goat cheese which was like upscale comfort food. Would definitely make this a regular stop if we lived in Ottawa.

When you've had a week from hell, the last thing you want to do is worry about cooking and meals. My wife and I as of lately haven't had the opportunity to go on a date. We have a 3yr old son and well...you get the picture. My mother in law offered to watch him this weekend and it was welcomed with smiles :) We've heard about the Albion Rooms and we've both heard nothing but great things. The cocktails are superb - fresh, innovative and delicious! To start, we had the scotch egg and gnocchi. The scotch egg was a real home run while I thought the gnocchi was a touch under seasoned, however, the cheese in the dish made up for that. We Both got the 72 hour short rib. Wow is all I can say. Tender, fall of the bone, juicy and flavourful. The Yorkshire pudding was soft yet firm and the roasted veggies were buttery and excellent. The service was attentive but also gave us space. The atmosphere was both intimate, modern with a touch of 1920's thrown into it (it'll make sense when you go here) All in all, I can't wait to come back here.

Perfect restaurant. Unassuming but delicious...lovely decor and beautiful presentation. Ordered the charcuterie plate with 3 meats and 2 cheeses. Duck was insanely good. Pork cheek for my main was superb. Great mix of flavours. My guests from Japan had the hangar steak and on their first bite they both exhaled and groaned. You know that sound. They were in heaven. Brussels sprouts are excellent. Drinks could be a bit stiffer considering the price. Big fan of Albion Rooms. It's one of those special Ottawa restaurants that most will dismiss because it's in a Hotel (Ottawa's first and oldest hotel, mind you...) I always bring people from out of town there because it's a real slice of Canadiana with some history plus plus plus. Return? No doubt.

Board of three charcuterie board - terrine, Avonlea cheddar, and foie gras with crostini

Nestled in the Novotel Ottawa Hotel, this resto bar may be a little difficult to find at first. There are multiple rooms (of course), and far more space and seating than meets the eye. It's not a party bar - trendy but somehow still homey and not pretentious, and the couch seating even includes pillows. I've been wanting to give this place a try after hearing they had some really great cocktails. I went with some friends for dinner and drinks to celebrate my birthday and thought I would indulge and splurge a little. I got the Shrabanero (habanero-infused gin and ginger beer based) and the Fashionable Tom (bourbon and orange based). Both were absolutely delicious, strong and flavourful but not too sweet, and met my expectations, though they were a good $14 and $16, respectively. The cocktails were definitely the star of the show here. I also split the charcuterie board of three with a friend. We chose the foie gras with honey, the wild boar rillette, and the 14-month aged cheddar. All were great, particularly the foie, but in my opinion, it was the only one worth the $10, had we paid for it individually. At the $27 price point, the portions seemed smaller than average. The brown paper bag used to serve the crostini, however, had quite a bit in it and we munched on a few by themselves to satisfy that salt craving. The short rib was cooked perfectly, but was incredibly fatty and started pooling oil/grease at the bottom of my bowl, so, unfortunately, I had to stop eating and couldn't finish it. I did have an upset stomach afterward, along with my friend who ordered the same dish, so I'm not quite sure what happened there. Total cost was about $100 with tax before tip for three oysters, half of the three-item charcuterie, the short rib main, and two alcoholic cocktails. Nice for a special occasion night eating rich foods, so stick to bar snacks and a cocktail or two to keep it more pocket- and tummy-friendly. If I could give 3.5 stars, I would!

Delicious and fresh charcuterie platter. Seen here: chorizo, salmon, foie and sauvagine cheese.

I've been here twice. Once for before dinner drinks - good selection, great service. I just sat at the bar area and the bartenders are the waiters, no complaints at all. I knew I had to come back. Second time, came for after work drinks and a light dinner. Ended up ordering a charcuterie platter, scotch egg, Parmesan fries and a salad to share. Charcuterie was the best, the foie and salmon prepared in house and it was delicious. Chorizo is local and I normally don't like chorizo but it's good - not too spicy. Well presented board with accompaniments and sufficient crostini (I hate asking for more) I think it's reasonably priced for what you get and the service has been great both times. (Always bar area) Can't wait to go back.

Scotch egg! Cooked to perfection

Came here for a food outing, and enjoyed a smorgasbord of tasty morsels. The location is right in the heart of downtown in the Novotel. Not far from the Rideau Centre, which we chose for underground parking as it is essentially across the street! Not being from Ottawa we had heard a few good things about this place and my guy was eager to check it out. A decent wine list with many local Ontario selections. We ordered a charcuterie board which was heavenly, so many bites to pick from and we were able to have a nice convo while enjoying. Next - was the scotch egg. Which was tasty, well seasoned and cooked perfectly. We didn't stay for mains this time but we will definitely be back.

We had reservations here last week, for our 6th anniversary. We were looking for something interesting but not overly fancy. The Albion did not disappoint. We arrived in good time for our 8pm reservation and were seated at the best table in the house. The waitress informed us that the "vultures had been circling" our table which gave us quite a giggle. Overall, I have mixed feelings about the entire Albion Room experience. The service was reasonably friendly but to-the-point, which I prefer above all other styles. However, the time between our appetizer and mains was a little prolonged. It didn't matter too much though because we were enjoying our conversation and drinks. I ordered the salad which was excellent in flavour and complexity but hilariously plated. It was a ginormous salad and it showed up on one of those classic, small, clear plates with the intricate raised designs on the underside. You know, the ones that all of our moms used to have to serve cheese and crackers on. Anyhow, what ensued as a result was me gingerly poking at this stack of greens on a very tiny plate while laughing and hoping the entire pile didn't fall on me! The salad was very tasty. It had all of the standard greens, dandelion greens, an immensely tasty green I didn't recognize, mint leaves, sweet-pickled cranberries, goat feta, sunflower seeds, and supremed orange segments. We ordered a scotch egg and the cauliflower plate to share. The scotch egg was very complex and moist. It contained duck, pork, deer, and wild boar. My only complaint was that it was a little overly fried/too crunchy. But c'mon! The cauliflower plate was a delight. Seared cauliflower, saffron mayo, raisins, croutons, pine nuts. These are flavours that have long been married but the balance on the plate was impressive! Saffron is not usually a favourite flavour of mine but they made it work. Lastly, my partner in dining had the elk burger. I was fortunate to taste a bit of it. I wasn't sure if I would like it because sometimes game can taste like beef, which I don't much care for. The elk had an excellent flavor which I might liken to a mix of pork and lamb with a hint of beef (for those who have never tasted elk either!). The burger also had bacon, cheddar, roasted shallot aioli - lots of good stuff. On the plate, was also discovered a curious pile of pickled onions. I tasted them and discovered they also had a small amount blue cheese added to them. This was an amazing combination. I tried it with the cauliflower. I tried it with the burger. All great! I'd head back in a heartbeat. One further note: I respect that the kitchen has included the names of their back-of-house staff on the menu. That gives me confidence.

I was SO stoked to finally visit the Moonroom after seven or so years of wanting to go!…read more After a Saturday night at Bluesfest, we waited somewhere else for about half an hour before they told us the kitchen was backed up, so we walked down Preston and I was so glad the Moonroom was still open. We didn't get there until about 12:30am and it was pretty full. We didn't leave until maybe 2:30am and it was still pretty full considering the time. They're not normally open this late, but it seems like a lot of the businesses on Preston decided to stay open later to catch the post-Bluesfest crowd. Good call! We decided to sit inside since there was an empty table, otherwise I would've liked to sit out on their back patio, which looked really pretty with the lights. Inside was a nice vibe though, too. It's small/narrow, dimly lit, with sheets covering the different coloured ceiling lights, and candles on the table. It's very intimate and pretty romantic. We sat close to the bar and there was another party of two beside us. The music was a bit louder so we couldn't really hear the other table's conversations, but not so loud that we couldn't hear each other. They were playing the Bee Gees when we walked (danced) in, so we were really about the jams. My husband got a rotating draught IPA by Daft Brewing, can't remember which one it was. I got the Jill Collins, which had Tanqueray Gin, Affino Limone, fresh lemon and mint, cane syrup, and a Moon soda top. It was super refreshing, bright, and not too sweet, which is exactly what I wanted. We shared/I mostly ate the "OG Grilled Cheese" and "Panzanella-esque Salad". The grilled cheese had aged Balderson and cream cheeses in a crunchy baguette smothered in toasted garlic butter, served with Moon ketchup. It was exactly as described, with very crunchy, buttery garlic bread and creamy cheese. The Moon ketchup is made in-house, thinner and chunkier than processed, store-bought ketchup, with stronger flavours. It was okay, but I didn't need to dip much in the ketchup because I really enjoyed the sandwich and it was on the saltier side itself. Because it was a lot creamier than gooey, I'd say it was more of a sandwich than a grilled cheese, but still very tasty. I really am not a huge fan of salad in general, but I can't complain when it was burrata on top. It also had salty bread, arugula, roasted tomatoes, fresh peaches, herbs, and honey. The peaches were more firm than ripe and juicy, which was good for a salad, though I wish they were a bit sweeter. The burrata wasn't creamy inside like I expected, but I love cheese in any form. I really don't know what possessed me to get salad, especially after a bunch of drinks in the wee hours of the night, but my body thanked me later. Salty, bitter, a little sweet, fresh, and not heavy, even with (more) bread and cheese. It was great. They unfortunately ran out of the affogato, which probably would've convinced my husband to stay longer. Too bad. The vegan dark chocolate gelato from Farinella that they put in it sounded amazing. The beer was $10.50, my cocktail was $19, grilled cheese $16, and salad $17, which was pricey. BUT, the fresh herbs are from their garden on the back patio, they make their own soda and ketchup (among other things), everything was delicious, and even late at night the cocktails and dishes were still well put together and tasted great, plus I finally came here after so long. No regrets! Our server was super nice, same with owner and one of the bartenders, who even popped over and sat with us for a bit to chat. And not in a weird/creepy/in-your-face way lol she was cool. She was the one who greeted us when we came in and said bye to us on our way out. There's no flash photography (I forgot to turn my auto flash off for my salad, sorry!). They're open all week from 5pm to 2am, no reservations, no large groups, and no phone (just stop by). I wasn't sure if it would meet the high expectations and hype I had built up in my head after waiting so long to visit, but it totally did. It's such a nice spot, we had an amazing time, and we will definitely be back!

Met some local friends at Stolen Goods and wow!…read more I loved every bit of this experience from the super creative drinks to the super cute raccoon theme found throughout! We sat up on the bar so we got a front row seat to all the magic. I was super impressed when the bartenders told us they kind of shoot from the hip for all their drinks in that they don't test it prior! They'll make small adjustments usually for acidity or sweetness but otherwise, you're basically experimenting alongside with them if it's on a recent menu change! My favorite drink of the night was the drink inspired by green curry. First and foremost, I was so confused when it came out clear! But when you took a sniff, you get the fresh scent of basil with some kaffir lime. On first taste, you also pick up some creaminess with the herbaceous notes which really makes it reminiscent of green curry - but it wasn't?! It was confusing, in a good way. My second favorite (of three) was the fruit loops infused drink. It paid homage to childhood Saturday mornings perfectly with the fruit loops whipped topping and the fruity cocktail underneath. It was a fun and lighthearted drink! My third was a drink featuring honeydew. It's such an underrated flavor because it's so hard to find a GOOD honeydew. In similar fashion, this drink also fell a bit short in the floral, sweet honeydew flavor and the cucumber flavor overpowered the drink. Having said that, the cucumber was really refreshing on such a humid day! All in all, loved the concept, loved the experimenting, and really enjoyed the vibes!

We got the King's ransom, Them's the breaks and Petty Theft. King's ransom came in an adorable pig shaped glass and had a fruity yet very smokey flavour. Them's the breaks was also lovely with some familiar fruity strawberry sweetness and a very interesting Merlot pink salt. Last but not least, Petty Theft was our favourite of the night with familiar SE Asian flavours and the nitrogen meringue experience which you pop in your mouth before sipping the drink. This one was $24 since it's a cocktail with a 72 hour process. This is a great spot if you love trying new drinks. The service is friendly, the music is on point and the overall ambience is perfect for a night out. They also take reservations - I recommend the bar seat.
