Birthday Girl treat
Hadia G.

We came here to celebrate a friends birthday, the menu is limited but everything we ordered was decent.. my friend who got the steak loved it, the pizza was more a flat bread but it was good. Service was fantastic and they made a lovely decorative dish for the birthday girl and kept it on the house! We got mocktails they were good and luckily we were there on a Wednesday when they have live music !

We had brunch here two days in a row during our stay in Ottawa. We liked what we had so much the first day that we wanted to come back and try more of the menu. The home fried potatoes and hollandaise sauce were excellent! I had the Clarendon bowl with chicken one day and the beef hash the next. Both were so tasty. The ambiance is cozy and clean and the service was wonderful. It was the perfect brunch spot!

Mezze platter

Elegant and cozy ambience perfect for a casual dinner or a more formal night out! The menu has a great selection with prices on par with the rest of the market scene. I came for happy hour with some colleagues and enjoyed the cauliflower and the mezze platter- both were very tasty and a great deal as part of happy hour special.

Cute Place, it is summer so we ate in the courtyard area, it was very nice and "European". The food was not amazing but it was good. The price was good, not to expensive, worth the price. The vibes were amazing; the courtyard the music the people, the vibes were immaculate. The stone hadn't been re done recently so the table and chairs were quite shaky. If you are in the byword market I would definitely recommend!

Hash skillet

The Clarendon Tavern has a great vibe and feel to it. I stopped by for Sunday brunch a couple weeks ago on a whim! I was pleasantly surprised. My usual go to brunch is either eggs benny or eggs and skillet dish. Their hash skillet sounded delicious - Jalapeño cheddar smokies, caramelized onions, red pepper relish, poached egg and hollandaise sauce! It did not disappoint! For the price I wish the portion size was bigger but it was so tasty nonetheless. The brunch menu is small but yet so much to choose from. Would I visit again?! Definitely.

Brass Monkey Cocktail - Also very good

A nice place for a drink on the bar side. Atmosphere is decent on the dinner side but for the price the food misses the mark. Pros: - great gin based cocktails - bar side atmosphere Cons: - food quality does not match price tag - service can be spotty

Hawaiaan breeze

Loved the food, drinks and the atmosphere! Flatbread will be enough for 2! Dont miss the happy hour :)

the service was well done. we went during the afternoon, so there was a discounted lunch menu. This was a really small portion, didn't expect to eat an appetizer sized item. Nice place to hangout

I've been to their sister restaurant Town prior to the pandemic and loved their menu so I was super excited to try this place! I love their menu - they change from time to time and it's always refreshing to see new dishes to try I loved the meatball dish when I dined at Town prior to the pandemic so I was so glad to that they kept that on their menu at Citizen! Featuring: - Quebec pork country pâté - smooth and delicious, the condiments/sides adds depth and complexity to the dish - Burrata and Peperonata - cheese was super fresh and that pepeonata - I don't like olives normally but Loved it on this! - Humboldt squid calamari - amazing squid - lightly battered and the cucumber salad underneath adds a refreshing tone - town meatballs - just as good as I remembered it the first time, swipe to see how large that meatball is My server also recommend one of the best raspberry beers I've ever had. Every single dish was excecuted to perfection and the flavours are complexed yet balanced, and presentation was impressive. If you're ever in ottawa, def check them out! They also have an online shop in their Town location for pantry items as well as beer, ciders and wine!

The Long Version: I was at Play Food and Wine Bar for a professional event that was sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. We were a group of about 30-40 people and had a section of the restaurant to ourselves. We had a set menu with a choice of mains (beef or vegetarian). We started off with a few hors d'oeuvres served on spoons. Servers were going around with them and I got to try two different types. One was a shrimp on a dollop of wasabi cream and the other was a gnocchi. Both were tasty and prepared us for the delicious meal to come. We all had the mixed salad, which was a spring mix with grapes, candied pecans, and whipped goat cheese, in a cucumber and mint vinaigrette. I loved the different textures and even though the salad came pre-dressed (I always prefer dressing on the side), the dressing wasn't heavy, so I didn't find it too overdressed for my tastes. For my main, I chose the beef cheek (the vegetarian option was gnocchi). The beef cheek was so tender and literally fall-apart. I didn't even need a knife. It was so flavourful too. It came with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. There was an olive and sun-dried tomato sauce on the beef that I found a too potent and overwhelming in flavour, but overall I still enjoyed the main. For dessert we had the chocolate tart. It had salted caramel on it and under the layer of chocolate was a layer of white chocolate fudge. It was very rich and decadent...overly so. I finished it nonetheless, lol. Service was excellent. We had several servers assigned to our group and they were attentive. They kept our water glasses and wine glasses full. Although I enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, I was driving, so had to limit myself to a glass and a half. Play Food and Wine Bar is owned by Stephen Beckta, who is a bit of a local celebrity, lol. His first restaurant is Beckta, which I have been to and while it's more upscale than Play, I actually enjoyed the food at Play more. His other restaurant is Gezellig, which is in my neighborhood (Westboro) and I've been to it a couple of times, and I definitely like Play better. I'm glad I was introduced to Play. The room we were in was lovely. It was long and narrow and had a bar. As with all restaurants in the Byward Market, parking is paid parkade parking or paid street parking only. Review #139 (2025)

The scallop crudo being on best app IMO. The tuna was OK and so was the welk which surprised me as being a menu item. I guess itsya popular time to eat! 3 weeks was worth the wait, as the anticipation of what we were about to enjoy grew stronger. Bread to start, with whipped butter. Hot from the oven. Soft, pillows of carb goodness, with a touch of salt. We started with the TOMATOES WITH FIOR DI LATTE AND RICOTTA STUFFED ZUCCHINI BLOSSOMS which was devine. My main was the ROASTED RAINBOW TROUT WITH BOILED POTATOES, PASTIS HOLLANDAISE AND SEA ASPARAGUS and hers was SWEET CORN AGNOLOTTI WITH BUTTER, PECORINO AND JALAPEÑO. Both dishes were faultless. We finished with Eton Mess with meringue, whipped cream and stewed rhubarb for dessert. It looks like a LOT, but the meringue is mostly air, so we tackled it with ease. And, it wasn't as sweet as expected. Americano to cleanse the palate. Fortunately, we found a parking spot right around the corner, so our full bellies didn't have to go too far.

Smash Daddy's - Restaurant Review Note for Americans: Bring…read morecash - no U.S. credit cards accepted! (Not sure if it's the same for international cards.) Walked here from my hotel. At first glance, the place is a bit cramped and chaotic, with minimal counter service and not much signage to help you out. But once you get the flow, it's straightforward. The menu is tight: Burgers, Fries, and Shrimp. That's it! There was a line out the door, which usually means good things. The small Asian lady working the grill was super nice and honestly seemed like the only one who had a handle on things. The burger joint itself is a haze of burger grease and onions--smells great while you're there, but be warned: you'll carry it with you the rest of the day. Food-wise, it's solid. The smash burger had a great crisp with a chipotle mayo or ranch-style sauce. Fries were better than average. I didn't try the shrimp, but people around me seemed happy with it. Now, the not-so-great part: they couldn't process any of my U.S. credit cards. That was awkward. My total was $23 CAD, so I just handed over $30 USD and told them to keep the change. Could've avoided the mess by ordering through Uber Eats (assuming you want to use a card). Bottom line: The food is worth it, but the payment situation and setup could be smoother. Slightly pricey for what it is, but your mileage may vary. Give it a shot if you're nearby--and bring cash just in case.

The Long Version: I've been meaning to try Smash Daddy since they started their food truck on Preston St, but never got around to it. Then on a Sunday in February we were walking around downtown and checking out Winterlude and came across this Smash Daddy location. It's an actual restaurant (not a food truck), but is mostly takeout. They have 7 stools along a counter if you want to eat-in, but it's a bit snug. My husband and I got the original Smash Daddy ($13) to-go to share. It's 2 smashed beef patties, 2 slices of cheese, pickles, onions and Smash Daddy sauce in a buttered brioche bun. It was delicious. My first time having smashed burgers. I like my burgers well done, so this style is to my liking. I liked the crispy edges. I found the price a bit high for just a burger, but those are the prices everywhere these days :( Service was pleasant. There's really no decor to speak of. You go there for the food, not the ambiance, haha. Happy to see this business expanding. They have 3 locations now. I think 2 food trucks and this restaurant. Street parking only. Review #60 (2025)
