They have a Brew Bar. Funny story, my brother loves A&W and used to work near this location before it opened up. He lamented how he wished there was an A&W near his work so he could go there for lunch. Shortly after he stopped working there, they opened up this A&W, haha. It's a relatively new location. I think it opened in 2021 or 2022. I've been to this location a few times. It's around the corner from a Winners (my favourite place to shop) and my husband has been known to go in and grab a Buddy Burger or two while he's waiting for me to finish shopping, lol. Their food is consistent, the space is clean, and staff are friendly. They recently launched their Brew Bar at this location, so now they also sell Root Beer slushies, fruit smoothies, creamy shakes, frozen lemonade, cold brews and lattes. We were there during this launch. They had a DJ playing tunes, the place was decorated with balloons and they had a spin the wheel game set up out front to win A&W merchandise. I won a bottle opener and my husband won a frisbee. We also got coupons to try a free small drink from the Brew Bar. I got the Strawberry Smoothie and my husband got the Acai Mixed Berries Smoothie. The regular price is $3.99 each. The smoothies are made by this automated machine. It's fun to watch. The smoothies were good, but a bit too sweet for my liking. They are made with real fruit puree, but I'm certain there's added sugar. The Mixed Berries one had a bit of an artificial aftertaste, which the Strawberry one didn't have. I feel that this location is more for people who live or work nearby or tourists or if you're already in the area doing something else. There's no parking. Street parking is hard to come by and not all that close. It is right by Parliament Station though, so easily accessible by public transit. This location is open 24/7.

Mr Fez - Inside the cheesy chicken pita

It comes with a chicken pita, a beef pita, and a cheesy chicken pita, as well as a side (garlic potatoes, fries or a salad) and a drink. I got garlic potatoes as our side and a bottle of water as our drink. The beef was really rare, I think it's because it was earlier in the day. I imagine that as the day went on it would get cooked more on the spit (?) Anyway, my husband ate most of it because I like my beef cooked more. It had pickles, tomatoes and garlic sauce in it. The flavour was good. Their spices are different than the usual shawarma joints here in Ottawa. The chicken pita and cheesy chicken pitas tasted similar with the regular chicken one having pickles in it and the cheesy one having cheese in it. Again the spices were different than at other places. I really enjoyed the different spices. It makes Mr. Fez unique. The pitas were a good size and I like how the put it on the grill to crisp it up. I would have liked some lettuce in the pitas. I'll ask next time. The garlic potatoes were good. The cubes were small, which I prefer, I don't like big pieces. They weren't mealy or starchy. They had good garlic flavour and I enjoyed the spicy garlic sauce. They also put this brown glaze sauce on the potatoes. Not sure what it was, but it tasted good. I like how staff wear fezzes. It's their thing which is kind of cool. Service was friendly and efficient. I like that they wear nitrile gloves when preparing food. There are some seats to eat in, but we got takeout and ate in the car (call me weird, but I've been eating in my car for decades and I love it. For fast food I prefer to eat in my car than at the restaurant, lol). On a subsequent visit we got the mixed shawarma sandwich (was $7.99 BOGO on UberEats) and it was fantastic! Same delicious unique spices. Thankfully, the beef was less rare this time. I love how they really grill the sandwich. I also asked for lettuce instead of onions and they accommodated :) After this second visit, I can safely say Mr. Fez is my favourite place to get shawarma in Ottawa! Street parking only.

I was immediately impressed by the fact I received friendly greetings from both individuals behind the counter. I ordered a generous portioned salad with lightly roasted chicken followed by a warm apple pie desert. When I indicated that I found that the coffee to be too strong (as if it had been on the burner too long), the person at the counter replaced it with my second choice, a cup of tea. I like the fact that this place is spacious. I like that the menu is varied and that prices are reasonable. Most of all, I like the fact that this Harvey's feels like one of those old fashioned family run businesses where new patrons are welcomed warmly and regulars are greeted by name. As I ate and then worked away, I could hear the sound of laughter from behind the counter. Clearly, employees here are part of a tight knit team who enjoy their work.

The Long Version: Freshslice Pizza is a Canadian chain founded in British Columbia in 1999. It only recently expanded to Ottawa last year (2024). I find it similar to Pizza Pizza in quality. Their classic slices are $3.25 and premium slices are $3.75. I got a Hawaiian slice, which is considered a classic slice. It was on the small side and served in a paper bag with the crust side facing out. I feel they should have put it in the other way around so I could eat the slice while keeping it in the bag and not get my hands all greasy and dirty, but that might just be a personal quirk. I'm sure most people have no issues taking the pizza slice out of the bag entirely and holding it with their bare hands and eating it on the street like that, lol. The amount of toppings was ok, not generous but not stingy. The taste was very unmemorable though. I didn't find it anything special. But I guess for the price it's acceptable. I mean even bad pizza is still pizza, right? Haha. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #186 (2025)

I was interested to check it out...since it's pizza, let's be honest. The first time I came by, I. thought my friend was going to meet me here but he ended up at a different pizza spot so I had to delay it. When I was there, I thought some of the slices looked like they had nice colouring on them and would be back. A few days later we dropped by and saw they had a really nice unlimited toppings pizza special. We decided on the medium with unlimited toppings which was only $12. After 15 minutes or so, I was out the door with a new pizza. I got home, popped it open and it was still holding hot and fresh. No weird side effects from the walk. Toppings looked solid and so did the bake. I pulled a slice and had a bite. I have to say, not a fan but also not terrible. The bake looks good but it doesn't taste like the bake indicates. I'm unsure if they add malt or something to do the dough for the colouring cause it's not as crispy as the colour indicates. I'm not a fan of the pizza crust. As for the toppings, they're decent. Even though this pizza wasn't for me, you may really enjoy this type of crust! Give it a shot and report back

Smoke n' Steam - Reuben mac and cheese

    Smoke n' Steam

Being the glutton that I am, one of the that things I love about Ottawa is all the food festivals…read more I'm only there once a month, but I've already been to a few in the past year.  When a friend was in town visiting my wife, we were looking for some food while doing a mix of tourist-y stuff and less interesting errands that I was running while in possession of a car. Always on the look out for trying new food trucks as I am, I gave the Street Food App a look, and saw that a couple were located in front of city hall. Knowing that this is where a lot of events occur, I delved a little further and found out that there was a mac and cheese food fest going on. This was going to happen. The mac and cheese fest wasn't to the scale of poutine fest(s) or others that have been held in the same space. Maybe it was because it was just the mid-afternoon, but there was just a handful of slingers of cheese-y decadence, a couple dessert ones, and a lone leomade vendor to sate your thirst. The beergarden was empty, save one couple whose motto was likely "it's five o'clock somewhere" and the band soldiering on despite sound issues and the lack of an audience.  However, when you're there for a simple meal and not to engage in a full out day of pasta gorging, you don't need that much selection. I picked out Smoke n' Steam, a rustic-looking hut on top of a trailer, as they had several types of mac and cheese to choose from, and at a more respectable price point than some of their competitors. Among their options there was chunky bacon, shrimp, hotdog (for the young and young at heart), and what I ended up going with, the Reuben. There wasn't much of a line up, so we quickly had our orders in and then in hand, taking seat in the nearby colourful Muskoka chairs.  The container was generously filled with big hunks of smoked meat, sauerkraut, and pasta in a white cheese sauce that was presumably Swiss, in true Reuben fashion. It was the type of mac and cheese that called out to be mixed altogether, mostly since I'm not enough of a sauerkraut fan to want mouthfuls of just that. Everything came together quite nicely, as the sauerkraut cut through the richness of the cheese and smokey, tender meat, but wasn't too funky. The pasta itself was a tight spiral similar to gemelli, and was a nice al dente, which was pleasant to find, since pasta served at big events like this can often be over cooked from sitting in a heating tray. I got an order of their smoked meat mac and cheese to take home to my studious wife, and look forward to trying Smoke n' Steam's regular menu of smoked meat goodness in the future.
