Every now and then I patronize a business that I think "Gee, I wish we had one of these at home" or "Gee, I wonder what it would be like to franchise a place like this at home". The Works is one of those places. Going here for lunch before heading home from my visit to Ottawa, I was hoping for a decent burger. Instead I got too many choices of what looked like good burgers along with an agonizing choice: fresh cut fries or homemade chips. Argh. I settled on a classic fallback for me, a bleu cheese burger and some homemade chips. Drinks are served in 2 cup measuring cups (weird but oddly cool) which further makes this place unique. The burger was mouth watering and on point. It was cooked a bit closer to Medium Well than Medium, but the flavor was there so it wasn't an issue. Our server was very friendly and we had no issues there. We were there at 11:30 on a Monday and there was a steady flow of take out orders along with a few other tables dining in. The interior looked to be an old wood fired pizza place, but since I'm not a local, I couldn't tell you if I'm right ;) If you can't tell by now, I'm a fan and wish this was closer to home. Everytime I feel like having a burger the works is the first place it comes to mind . I love their huge menu and how many options for the whole family from the meat lovers as well as the vegetarians who enjoy a good veggie/vegan burger. The place has upgrated a lot with the years it used to be very pub style now i could say it can be a bit hipster but we love that !! The pictures were taken for a contest to show landmarks from my city and I still find them very cool !! Finally got a chance to try out this location again, but this time the hubby and I dined in instead of take out. We had just missed the lunch rush at around 1:30 on a Saturday (score), which means we had our pick of where we wanted to sit. This restaurant feels a tad smaller than the other Works around the city, but we found a nice cozy spot in the restaurant to sit at. Service was super attentive and our waiter constantly checked up on us without being aggressive, he was pretty awesome and super friendly. Refills were constantly topped up as well, which was fantastic! We started with the tower o-rings which was sooooooooo freaking good! It came with two dipping sauces, which were chipotle and a tangy dijon sauce, but I believe you can customize your own from the menu. Definitely recommend getting that while you wait for your mains! It was well worth it! For burgers the hubby chose the tragically maple and a side poutine. He said it was amazing! I tried a bite of his poutine and regretted not upgrading my fries to a poutine as well. The gravy was spot on! I ordered the man-o-war and swapped the beef burger for a veggie burger. It came topped with caramelized onions, horseradish, dijon haze and gouda. The horseradish and dijon gave it a nice kick! I'd get that burger again! I remember when The Works first opened in Ottawa. One location. It was an excellent experience. Great flavours, great service, an great pricing on what is considered a gourmet burger. Then, more locations opened, and as expected, the experience changed. What was once a great meal became, er, homogenized. I'm not even sure that's the right word. What I mean to say is that, in the process of opening multiple locations, and keeping the taste the same across all the locations, something was lost. The flavour of the patty became flat. No depth of flavour, no complexity on the palette. The menu was the same, but the execution wasn't. because of that, I stopped going. Fast forward to this past visit, which was planned by my siblings for my Mum's 80th birthday. When they told me it would be at this restaurant, I thought to myself "ugh, there are so many other places that serve a better burger". I was pleasantly surprised to see that the menu wasn't as huge as it was. It's no secret in the food industry that offering fewer items, and doing them perfectly, is better than offering more, and ding them poorly. My burger was tasty, and cooked perfectly. Excellent meat to bun ratio. The best part was the service. Our server admitted to just having started a few weeks ago, an thanked us for making her first big party service so pleasant. Her attitude will make me consider returning to this location, despite it being a 45 minute drive from home, and that there is a Works location in our neighborhood. read more

They can also customize to your taste - which they did wonderfully for my daughter (who wanted lettuce, cucumber, mayo, and FRENCH FRIES in her burger). The family and I went here for my Nephew's birthday as it is his favorite restaurant. The atmosphere was great and the server was courteous, but overall, I was not impressed. The server never checked up on us if we wanted to order another round of drinks. My side order of sweet potato fries were very small in portion compared to some of the fries on the other plates and they were overcooked and tasted burnt so I left them aside. I didn't voice a complaint as I did not want to cause a scene for my nephew's sake. The bill came to over $40 for basically a burger and 2 drink orders. The saving grace was the burger. It was thick, juicy, and delicious, but it was not worth the price. Next time someone suggests The Works, I will give it a pass. read more

I've had great experiences with all locations so far. The service was amazing as always and the decor was just like all the others. This one even had an outdoor patio. The Works in general: The food is always great and I definitely have my favourite toppings being anything with pineapples! I like how the menu now also includes an everything bagel which isn't a bad $0.50 upgrade. The menu is very customizable from the buns (or lack of) and type of protein to the combo of toppings so it should fit most diets. My vegetarian friend actually suggested this particular visit. Their milkshakes...AMAZING. I've been a returning customer for a couple of years now and will continue to be. I also enjoy seeing their seasonal outrageous specials (like peanut butter pieces in a burger) that I have yet to try but it's something that will keep inviting regulars to try something new. read more

I came here during lunch to try out their lunch menu. It's a pretty good deal as you can get a 4oz burger, with fries and a 16oz drink for $10.97! I chose the dead ringer because of the smoked brisket and smokey bbq sauce, and upgraded to onion rings. The burger was satisfying, not too dry, and there was enough sauce and cheese to make it really hearty. I also got a chocolate chip cookie milkshake (I LOVE their milkshakes)! They're always super thick and rich, and not too sweet. The only thing is the wait is usually pretty long to get your food, but it just means the food is being freshly prepared! Service was professional and quick, but could be friendlier. The washrooms here for ladies were quite stinky, which I haven't experienced at other The Works locations. Overall, a good deal, but nothing oustanding. read more

I've been consistently disappointed by The Works every time I've tried them over the last three years. The latest effort was at The Works in Manor Park. The service is ok, the fries and the onion rings are tasty, but the burgers are almost always way overcooked to the point of being so dry there's no juice in the meat at all. When I order what they say is Wagyu-style beef from Alberta, and they're setting a high bar by calling it that, there should be some evidence of fat in the meat, not a patty so over-mixed it has the consistency of canned cat food, and so dry that canned cat food would probably have a more pleasant texture. I understand there may be laws around how ground beef is prepared but there is a difference between cooking ground beef to temperature and cooking the hell out of it, and that difference is roughly 2 minutes. The works has gone out of their way to devise a menu so complicated that in my case every burger I've tried has had something (other than the meat) off in some way. I've found the flavour combinations confusing and difficult to really enjoy. Why doesn't the works cut down their menu to a smaller list of core burgers and then just have people customize them? Then the chain could focus on making those core burgers well and training staff on how to cook them without ruining them. read more

My kids brought me here for a Father's Day dinner. I haven't been to The Works in a long time, and this past Sunday was the first time at this location. We were seated immediately upon arrival. We waited longer than expected for our server to take our drink order, considering it didn't seem to be too busy. However, once we did place our order the service was excellent. I've been here twice this year, and that's saying something since I don't even live in Ottawa. They are planning to expand east, so one can only hope they make it towards Halifax. This is one of their locations in Ottawa, but we've been told by local residents that it's by far the nicest. Tucked away in a little strip mall off of the St. Laurent stretch, this place has some charm with big tables, quirky steampunk-esque wall decorations, and super friendly staff. Your meal comes in a tin bucket, drinks are served in two-cup measuring cups, and your choice of over 16 milk shakes comes thick and creamy in up to four-cup monsters. While most of the measuring cup pop includes free refills, be aware that the root beer and cream soda only come by the bottle, and at $4 per bottle, it's practically liquid gold. Their three-page menu has dozens of burger options, but let's start with the basics: the meat. You can choose from your classic beef, or if you want something slightly healthier you have your poultry choice of chicken or turkey. More of a veggie? They have large Portobello caps for a veg-friendly meaty taste. Looking for something exotic? They can accommodate that too, with their Elk burger. However, as each massive burger is made fresh and cooked slow for a perfectly juicy creation, the wait staff will remind you that it'll take at least 20 minutes for the platter of food to slam onto your table. If you're starved, that's why I highly recommend the Tower-O-Rings as a shareable app. Crispy, thickly battered onion rings are piled high onto a foot tall skewer, and come served with your choice of dipping sauces. Both BBQ sauces and the curry mayo are my recommendations. Now you can choose your topping options; this ain't no plain jane burger joint, (although you can order that if you're not one for flavour accessories). Want some KD? How about cream cheese and horse radish? Or you can try healthy with grilled egg plant, shredded carrots, and avocado. Go crazy with peanut butter and jalapenos! If you live for cheese as much as I do, you've hit the jackpot: brie, jack, gouda, blue, cheddar, goat, havarti, swiss, feta... They must have a cheese monger living in their fridge. Feeling saucy? There's smokey barbecue, curry mayo, hotter than hell, pesto, chipotle, teriyaki... Go ahead and baste your baby with the flavours you want. Basically, this burger joint is ready to satisfy any carnivore's craving, even if you're a pregnant woman wanting pickles and cream cheese on that elk patty. Plus, it's fun to just read the menu to go over the burger names and laugh a little (check out the Don Cherry burger: sour grapes, moldy cheese and a stale bun.). I've had the Roughrider's Comeback and the Smokey Mountain, and both were very good. I'm already hoping to make another Ottawa trip sooner than later for another stop at The Works. DRINKS: We started with waters and a srawberry daiquiri virgin The cocktail was not very sweet even after asking for a reblend with more syrup. Fail. THE THREE BURGERS: The Tony D Luxe- This sandwich was a bit dry. Maybe the meat was overcooked, maybe the bun was stale, we couldn't quite put our finger on it, but... The Sum Yung Guy- with its smoky flavour and similar ingredients (cream cheese instead of brie) is the more accomplished brother of the two. Not yo' burger- This third burger was the best of the three. Buttery avocado and a juicy cheese dip spread offset by crunchy tortilla chip and textured salsa. GOOD STUFF. NB- slightly spicy I RECOMMEND: sweet potato fries over regular ones. White fries were kind of dry EXTRA TIP: Specify your meat if the waitress doesn't ask. Hold the phone, turkey, whole wheat, sweet potato fries... If you're reading this because you are considering trying the Works for the first time please stop reading right now and GO! The Works is nothing less than amazing. The burgers are big, delicious, and topped with anything you can think of. When you order to get to design your burger exactly how you want it. The first line of this review is my personal order, this includes choice of toppings, type of patty, type of bun, and side. Vegetarian? Not a problem, you still have a choice between two different patties! It takes about 20 minutes for the burgers to cook so I appetizers are often taken advantage of by my friends and I. Now I know the tower of rings gets a lot of hype, but here's my advice on that: don't get it. They have a different appetizer called Belgian Frites in which you get sweet potato fries, french fries, and the onion rings you were considering ordering on their own for about the same price (if not slightly less) than the tower. Way better value! On the customer service side of things I am staying extremely positive! I've never had a bad experience. All of the servers are enthusiastic, friendly, and very interactive. Perfect for the type of atmosphere of the restaurant. So if you've never been, first off I told you at the beginning of this to go already! But more importantly once again I'm going to state my profound love for this restaurant! Have fun looking through the menu and try new things! You never know what will taste amazing until you try it. I went into this works location before I had a sports night and was surprised to see it was quite busy. I was seated right away and I knew my friend was going to be late and we were on a time crunch so I told the waitress right away that I would be ordering for my friend and she was very understanding and served me very quickly. I told her my friend was about 15 minutes away when I ordered and she said perfect because the burgers would take about 20 minutes. I had the Sexy Burger (cream cheese, banana peppers, pineapple and sweet&spicy sauce) and it was SO good! I really like their fries also. The food arrived about 5 minutes after my friend did which was perfect and our service was friendly, fast and very accommodating. The restaurant itself seemed small and busy but the service is good so all in all it was a great experience. read more

Is there any more over-reviewed and over-rated restaurant in Ottawa? Okay, not that it's not good, but this place is freakin' mythologized. However, in the spirit of giving credit where due, just wanted to note that I enjoyed a recent visit to the Beechwood/St-Laurent location for lunch. To me, this is by far the most sensibly laid-out and welcoming interior of the three I've visited (St-Laurent plus Richmond and Bank). Served by a quirky young man who, except for the irritating "How are we?" question and the reminder that because our burgers are sooooo exceptional, each order takes 20 minutes, was pretty good and told a few funny stories. Saturday late lunch - not a particularly busy time. I had the spinach salad. It was really good. Enough non-spinach items to be interesting plus a pretty good vinegarette on the side. My friend had the pesto pizzaz burger, with chicken, whole wheat bun and sweet potato fries. Looked so good I regretted the salad. Because I am a curmudgeon, I am going to note that serving the soft drinks in the pyrex measuring cup is getting a little old but otherwise, can't find anything to complain about. read more

Came for my annual poutine fix and the Works seldom disappoints. Spicy Bloody Mary and bucket of fries, loads of curds and of course drowning in gravy. Let me start off by saying that I am not a resident of Ottawa and this was my first time at this restaurant. AWSOME burgers!!! Some of the best I ever had! My wife had a Turkey burger and she can not stop talking about it! I also had the LIPSTICK ON A PIG poutine and it just AMAZING. I did not sit in the restaurant and eat but rather had take out. It was recommended by our friends who we were visiting. As such I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE! I will not give it five stars for two reasons. 1. Way too many options on the menu! I feel as if I am missing something better because there are so many options. 2. We had to go back because we almost go cheated! We had four orders and they only put three in the bag. Their menu is something like 50 different burgers, which is fine I suppose, but they should also just list ingredients and let you build your own burger, which they don't. Further, the burger is just alright, as in I've had much better and can make much better at home for much less, as in I'll never go back. This place is the best! We go with our toddler and the place is very kid friendly but I would also go here with any group of adults. They have some exotic meats (elk) but nothing beats the beef patty. It's freshly ground so they can cook it medium. It will take me a while to eat through the menu but everything has been so good so far. read more
