Absolutely wonderful experience at this place! My wife and I were in the neighborhood for an appointment, and it was lunch time, so we decided to stop in. A glance at the menu drew me to the smoked meat spring roll, but upon hearing the daily special of the salmon wrap and butternut squash soup was what I chose. My wife's fish tacos were equally very very tasty and the salad dressing was possibly the best we've ever had in the 31 years that we've been eating out. My companion ordered the club wrap. It consisted of a pita containing two strips of bacon, two slices of deli chicken, a Romaine leaf, and two thin slices of tomato, with mayo. I ordered the Reuben. It consisted of two slices of light rye, plus three or four slices of smoked meat topped with a melted slice of processed Swiss cheese. I had a domestic draft beer on tap. My friend had water. It is a relaxing spot to grab a bite and a drink. It's slightly above average compared to most Ottawa pubs by being clean, well decorated (Irish Pub style) and with a slightly more thought out menu than most Irish pubs (e.g., Reuben egg rolls, mussels). They also have a small breakfast menu. I would give it a 3.5 if I could too. The beer menu seems to have improved recently with local beers now offered on tap. What a great place to get some drinks with the girls. We even sat at the bar and felt very welcomed and taken care of. The bartender was attentive and made amazing cocktails (the list has many options). We shared the calamari which was cooked perfectly and came with two different sauces to choose from. Of the pubs in Westboro (others are Whispers, Corner Bar and Grill, and Clocktower), Churchill's is my favourite. The food is more expensive than the other pubs, but the quality is so much better. I almost always get the Churchill Burger with half fries and half salad ($15). The bun is nice and dense and doesn't have annoying seeds (sesame, poppy, etc.) on it. The burger is juicy and flavourful. The fries are hand cut, with the skins on, and don't taste like McCain frozen fries. The salad is a spring mix and not just iceberg lettuce (alas, I am one of those kale-loving hippie lettuce snobs, I despise iceberg lettuce and I hate it when my "salad" arrives and it's just iceberg, even if it's adorned with some sorry slivers of carrot, slices of cucumber or tomatoes, but I digress...). The mixed drinks are pretty good too, except for one that I think was called the "dark and stormy" or something like that. I'm glad to see that they removed it from the menu because it was disgusting. The Churchill Iced Tea is good. If you go to the bathroom, watch out that there is a small step up. I fell once and had bruised knees for a week (and no, I hadn't had too much to drink at that point)! Update 2017-07-08: The Corner Bar and Grill mentioned in my review has closed down and the space is still vacant. However, another bar called the Barley Mow has opened up in Westboro. So same number of pub choices, just different ones, lol. Also, they brought brought back the "Dark and Stormy." I was too afraid to try it again, but hopefully they made it better :S read more

In Westboro area we had a great dinner here. We got a table right away luckily and the drinks were on our table within minutes of us getting settled. The drink suggestions by our sever were perfect for everyone and I really enjoyed the local brew. Being the first time at a pub I'm always a little reluctant to order a steak especially for $32 but on our holiday I hadn't been able to get to a steak house and this being our last dinner out before we fly home I just gave it a shot and it was definitely the right choice. Perfectly cooked med/rare tender and the demi glacé was great not to over powering but enhanced the flavour of this beautiful 12 oz cut. Everyone enjoyed their meals as well. We chose to share all 3 deserts they had on the menu that evening and although 2 of the 3 where pretty standard deserts they where prepared really well. Fresh and very flavourful but the deep fried ice cream was excellent. The cheesecake and creme brûlée were surprisingly good as well. A great night as the food here surpassed our expectations especially for a pub. read more

Stopped in Sunday evening for supper. Waited a few moments as the hostess was busy chatting with other staff. It was quiet so I expected a delay. Once seated the server came by to get my drink order, I got a Hendricks martini which was dry and lovely. Gin and st Germain. I ordered the fajita nachos with no pico (I'm not a fan and find it makes the chips soggy). They came out with the sour cream and guacamole on the dish. Initially, I was concerned as I prefer to dip and want to have an even amount of sauce. But they did a great job ensuring each bite was consistent. I finished my meal with the pistachio creme brûlée and a perfect mix of hard candy and soft pudding. It was a bit expensive but considering I had a drink and dessert, I was satisfied with the meal and the cost. Good pub experience read more

I came here a couple of weeks ago and have been dying to come back ever since!! Just got back here today and ordered a Hendricks Gin Martini at a very reasonable price of 7.75 for 2oz - and it was shaken with muddled cucumber and st. Germain. Great! My husband is satisfied with the beer selection, though they're more limited than other places in town. The place is really cozy and has incredibly friendly bar staff -- a major plus if you're looking for a regular place. There are trivial pursuit cards on the bar, and the bartender was playing with us between making drinks. It was very fun. I got an appetizer of dumplings and peach sauce and my husband got a burger. Both tasty! Love the pub decor. It is cozy, has good lighting and is about a million times better than the chain pubs in Ottawa. I hear there's a rooftop patio and I can't wait to come in the summertime. This is definitely a place I can see becoming a regular spot. read more

I found out about this place when Chez Lucien was packed. We headed down to Westboro and were quickly seated when we arrived. The place looks really nice from the inside and our booth could hold 6 people. There's an alright selection of beer and the menu is a decent size for a pub. I ordered the wings, jalapeno poppers and my friends ordered some other items to start. A burger was my main since I wanted one at Chez. The wings were soggy and it wasn't from being sauced. I'd never order these again. The jalapeno poppers weren't bad though. The burger was good. You can't go wrong with O'Brien Farms beef on fresh baked bread. The fries were ok but they were good after asking for the home made hot sauce which had nice flavour but wasn't that hot. They also make a home made buffalo sauce but it was boring. I tried a small piece of my friends fish and chips and neither of us really liked the batter they used. The portion size of the fish was very big. It was a good night at the pub and I liked trying this place. I would say the pub fair is better than most of the "chain" pubs in Ottawa but isn't as good as The Manx or Chez Lucien. read more

Churchills, in reality, is probably more like a 3.5/5, but you can't do that on Yelp and it would be unfair to round down so here's a 4/5 rating! The other night, the two appetizers we ordered were pretty good (cornbread, and fajita nachos) but nothing outstanding. Our mains, the Baked Mac n' Cheese and the Chef's Pasta Creation were very good. I have to say I was very happy with the richness of the cream and flavour in each, and we left very satisfied. Overall, this is a good bar/pub. And I will happily say it's a step above just "going to get some bar food", because I tasted that they do indeed put effort into their dishes and it shows. We went in for beer and applies with a group of friends. Reservations are required if you want to seat a group on a Friday evening as the place was packed. Service from the kitchen was very slow with about an hour elapsed time between the order and the arrival of the food. Fortunately, drinks come quicker. I ordered something I hadn't seen before - Reuben egg rolls. So imagine a Montreal smoked meat and cole slaw stuffed into an egg roll shell and then deep fried and served with a little bowl of a sauce that tasted like Kraft thousand island dressing. I don't know what I was thinking. My wife ordered bruschetta, which consisted of slightly soggy slices of baguette covered with a banal smooth spaghetti sauce. One of our friends had grilled scallops which looked fine but were tiny and not cheap - 4 for $14. Others had burgers and salads which also seemed fine but nothing special. Our server was pleasant and managed to handle the multiple orders and bills efficiently. But I think I'll pass on the food next time. read more

Two things bump this place up from an average three-star pub to a four-star for me: 1) rooftop patio (with a somewhat grueling set of stairs after a few beers, be warned) and 2) the beer list, which offers a few rare choices, including Granville Island IPA one of my favourites. Good service and slightly above-average pub fare rounded this place out (that said, the wings are disappointing. If it's wings you're after, there are a hundred better spots in Ottawa. I'm sure you can even find a list here on Yelp.). If you're in Westboro, definitely go for the beer, patio, and service. But go while it's warm - in the winter, it reverts to a three-star. read more

** 3.5 stars ** I came here on St. Patrick's Day. Yes, I realize I went to an English pub on a day I should've been in an Irish bar, embracing my inner Irishwoman. But the Irish pubs were packed, and I had spent my afternoon freezing my buns off, on the patio of a Scottish pub in the Market (where service was, I daresay, meh). So eating in a place that was a little more sedate was all right with me. The place was a fair size. The decor was sleek - something I'm sure is expected in a Westboro establishment - but I didn't find it cold or unfriendly. Seating was great, and our drinks came promptly. As mentioned earlier, food was above-average pub fare. I tried the Vegetarian Mousaka with greens, which I liked. My friend (and weekend hostess) had the Stuffed Chicken, which I sampled. Pretty good as well. But the dish that took the cake was my friend's co-worker's Double Thick Pork Chop (which we also sampled). It was juicy and savoury. Fantastic. Today my wife and I went to Churchills for a nice patio beer and some lunch. We decided on Churchills because we had been there many times in the past and it was good food and decent service. Today, however, was a totally different experience, it was disappointing, slow, unconcerning for certain customers (basically if you weren't friends with the server) and for this first time ever I left a restaurant beyond angry. While we sat in the 30 degree weather we ordered our drinks and then proceeded to order our few immediately after so we could enjoy both at the same time (relatively). Though that plan did check out, 4 tables, who arrived almost 20 plus minutes after we arrived ended up ordering AND being served AND finishing their meals before we even received our appetizer. 45 minutes after ordering we finally received our jalapeno poppers, in which at the rate you already know that our beers, not even half empty, we're beyond warm. Then while struggling to drink the remainder of our beers and hoping to maybe order another when our meal arrived we realized we had been sitting at the table for an hour and 20 minutes and had still not been given our meals. At this point 6 different tables that arrived after us had been served and finished their meals and we were still waiting on ours. Finally, my wife and I decided that this was ridiculous since we sat and watched our waiter socialize with other tables and bring them more drinks, we decided to ask for our food to go. Once we asked that, our food was brought to us immediately in to go containers... so I think it's safe to assume that the food had been ready for sometime, especially since I open the poutine container and the fries were already soggy and the cheese completely melted... we then took our food home with us only to be able to eat through half of the, now, cold rueben sandwich and cold burgers and completely soggy poutine. I can honestly say, this was the biggest waste of $75.00 that I have ever spent. I have never had such a poor wait time for my food nor such poor wait service. I'm was beyond disappointed with the service and as far as I and my wife are concerned Churchills has lost our business for good and that says a lot since we used to go there quite a lot, and just to make a point I never feel the need to ever write yelp reviews and this was such bad service that I had to say something. Very disappointing Churchills. And I do not expect to ever go back with such a shitty experience lingering. read more

It's a nice pub in the trendy district of Westboro. The rooftop is awesome, but if you don't want to freeze to death, avoid it any other time but summer. Of couse. The main room is nice, big, but a little bit dark, i went for a drink with a friend, so it was the night, i don't know how it is during the day. They propose food, which seemed very good, but i didn't taste it. The drinks are good, but slightly expensive (12$ the cocktails for 2oz, or 8,75$ for 1,5oz).
