A group of my friends (all in our bubble) went to heart and crown to celebrate the start of the school year and all of us reuniting once again ! It was super fun and the prices weren't ridiculous for students either. The staff were friendly although we could tell that our waitress was getting more and more flustered as the night went on (it must've been a chaotic night!). They had a live musician playing a set which was cool as well, we didn't hear him from outside but we could see him playing through the window. The staff also supported local, I asked to order a cider and the staff put me onto a local cider rather than a big brand which I appreciate a lot ! Needless to say it was a really great night at a patio!

I've been to the Heart & Crown many times, and while it has never wow-ed me, it hasn't really disappointed me either. If you make it out for Appy Hour, that's the best. They have half-priced appetizers, which is great since their apps are usually around $15 each (shareable though). My friend and I came for dinner the other day on a whim, and opted to sit on the patio. I will give them that credit- they have a decently sized patio right on Preston street, so it's great for people watching! We got a bit chilly though and they were more than accommodating in moving us indoors. Our server recommended the smoked beef shortribs as an app, and they were okay. I didn't love them and might not get them again, but I ate them anyways and the flavour was pretty good. For dinner, my friend had the afterschool special (grilled cheese and soup) and I had the steak sandwich. The meat was well cooked, and it was well seasoned. The fries were pretty tasty, too. I love coming here for a night out, it's a really cool vibe compared to a club or something like that, and the music and crowd are usually pretty good. I'll certainly be back as it is a reliable go-to spot, especially with the nicer weather coming.

H&C deluxe burger with bacon, onion ring and chipotle mayo

When it's my first night back in Ottawa and the sun is out after days of grey skies and rain, that means one thing: patio! Our apartment is equidistant between Little Italy and the Bank St heart of the Glebe, but Little Italy's larger amount of restaurants and bars with al fresco options made it our target. I wasn't feeling like anything Italian, and Heart and Crown has a large patio that wraps around both sides of their building, so we pulled the trigger. It was just a Wednesday evening, so while there was a decent crowd outside, there was still plenty of seats available. While the views aren't spectacular on this section of Preston (or a lot of Preston), there's a lot of planters and hanging plants that give the space a nice feel, and also brought some shade from the late evening sun. We took a look at their drink list/booklet, and were impressed with their selection, with tons of beer on tap (macro and craft), several ciders, and plenty of whisk(e)ys, naturally. Encouraged by the drink selection, we mused that this could be a great spot to come, as long as the food is good. Spoiler alert, we jinxed ourselves. Taking a gander at the food menu, it is almost entirely what you would expect to be on a standard Irish pub's menu - the usual pub appetizers, sandwiches, and a handful of ostensibly Irish items like shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, and a stew. I wasn't particularly drawn in by anything, so just went with their H&C Deluxe burger, which comes with spicy caramelized onions, bacon, cheese, an onion ring, chipotle mayo and the usual burger fixins. My wife is a big shepherd's pie fan, so chose old faithful.  It wasn't too long before our food arrived, long enough to chat a bit and enjoy our drinks in the sun. Now normally one notices their own plate of food, but I took in my wife's. Why you might ask, for such a dish as plain as shepherd's pie? Well, the gravy on it. Not a traditional topping, and definitely not so much that it was pooling in the edges of the ramekin. I dipped my fries in it to help my wife out; the gravy just tasted like a gravy kit loaded with salt, so it certainly wasn't for my own sake. Even with my aid, the shepherd's pie was more of a soup. You're not helping the dish or your food costs with this, so if you have to have gravy, a little cup on the side would do.  My gravy-abating fries were nice and crisp, a bit on the thicker side, and served in a de rigeur, but still nice, metal cup. The burger looked nice, with a pickle spear pinned to the top of the supple brioche bun, and the cheddar and bacon peeking out with a tease of the salty goodness inside. I have to say that all the topping worked really well, with a good balance of flavours, and a slight kick from the spicy onions. The bun held up well, and there was a solid meat-to-bun ratio, so that there wasn't a bunch of meat without bun, nor mouthfuls of just bread. On the downside, the patty was either overcooked or from frozen, and straight up not good. Tough, and with a texture that hinted at being processed/old/salted during its making, it brought the burger as a whole down. Now, it wasn't shepherd's pie soup bad, but it was not something I would get again.  Service was attentive, checking in as necessary, if a bit cold and indifferent, which I'll attribute to a bad day and/or a likely busy dinner rush.  Alas, we shot ourselves in the feet with regards to the food jinx. They get to the three star level only because of their drink selection, and I'd still come back for the drinks and nice patio area, but would probably stay within the safety net of deep fried apps if I was hungry. If you like terrifying amounts of bad gravy though, fill your boots!

4 stars out of 5 - place for big groups - place for an afterwork drinks - they have a small beer bible - pub food ok (I had the club sandwich on rye bread with fries; yes, mayo goes with fries.) - our server was effective at making sure we got our orders right and receipts even when we kept shifting seats

This place is gorgeous. They've got a beautiful bar - old style with rich dark wood and copper, and they've been rather successful at looking like a typical Irish pub. I liked the menu. Great variety. Lots of traditional pub fare, six different burgers, and some fun Irish standards to name but a few of their offerings. My table ordered the Shepard's pie which was delicious. What a great idea to top the potatoes with some curry sauce. Nice little twist. We also had the seafood chowder (a meal in itself) and also very good. I had the tomato soup and grilled cheese that comes on potato bread with a thick slice of ham on it. My only complaint was that the food took quite some time to come out of the kitchen. Overall, a great place for a beer or a meal or both!

This Heart and Crown has a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff. I enjoyed a pint of Keith's Red with my spouse as we waited to to go a Yelp event =) Food wise, their bar appetizers are (high calorie) but tasty, such as their deep fried pickles or fried onion rings. I have had their burgers in the past, which were also a good counter to the alcohol. All in all, a decent place to bring your friends for a night out!

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the Heart and Crown in Ottawa. But nothing really stands out, either. It's a nice bar with friendly servers, a good run of taps, and from what I've had there, a decent enough menu. It's typically packed during the week, crazy on the weekends, and boasts one of the larger patios on Preston Street. I think that's what gets me on this. It's "nice". There's plenty of other places on Preston Street that are daring, high-falootin', challenging, grungy. This place is...nice. Like "Starbucks" nice. That said, it's got one of the better plates of nachos that I've had at a bar. Give those a try. They're better than nice.

My father-in-law read about this pub online and wanted to check it out, so he, my husband and I…read morewent for dinner on a Sunday evening. It's a cute little Irish Pub. I had never been to Carleton Place before, and don't know the town at all, but the street it's on looks like the "main street" of small towns. There's no attached parking lot, but there's street parking and a public parking lot across the street (don't know if you have to pay for the lot, but street parking was free). We shared the bruschetta to start ($11). It was 6 pieces with a garnish of mixed greens in the middle (like a tiny salad). The bruschetta was good. It was nicely broiled and had cheese and garlic along with the diced tomatoes. I had the Coconut Crusted Haddock ($22). It came with 2 huge pieces of haddock. (You also have the option of 1 piece for $18). It usually comes with rice and steamed vegetables, but I was told I could substitute the rice for fries or mashed potatoes. I went with fries. The fries were regular cut and were ok. The steamed vegetables were mostly cauliflower and carrots, but I also had a few pieces of green peppers. They were ok, and made me feel good about myself that I had vegetables with my meal. The fish was excellent. Really flakey and delicious. It came with a creamy sauce and I'm so happy it came on the side and not poured over the fish. So the fish stayed crispy and I could control the amount of sauce. My husband had the Village Meat Pie ($18). He also got fries and steamed vegetables. The meat pie was a slice of a larger pie and not a small individual pie. It looked really meaty, but also had some vegetables in it. He enjoyed his meal. My father-in-law had the No Blarney Burger with fries ($17). It was a burger with bacon and cheese. He enjoyed it. Service was friendly. Decor is typical Irish pub. I enjoyed my meal and I think it's a cool pub. I definitely recommend it for people who live in Carleton Place or are passing through Carleton Place. However, I personally would not make the drive from Ottawa just to eat there again, as I feel there are comparable places closer to Ottawa, but if I was already in Carleton Place for some other reason, I would be open to returning to St James Gate.

Food was delicious and plentiful, service was great! It's a cosy, smaller room, but lovely!read more
