We got a bottle of wine and our service was kind enough to have a selection for us to choose from and helped us pair it well with our meal. It was tasty but overall too salty and a little tough. Waited 20 min for more wine. wine by the glass is annoying when the waiters are too busy bussing tables to take your order. We stopped in spur of the moment on a weekend night, no reservations but were able to sit out on the lovely heated patio. Phenomenal beer list, with a great deal of care taken to offer unusual and exquisite beers. We got some small plates to share, starting with a delicious charcuterie board of house made pork pastrami and a few cheeses. The accompaniments were as tasty and well-matched as could be. Then we had a foie gras tart. I thought this would be a savory tart, but to my surprise it was like a dessert. With foie gras! The flavors were delicately sweet, balanced, and amazing. The foie gras was subtle without any of the mineral finish that it has sometimes. Seved with dulce de leche and sorrel, this was mind blowing. We then had a pasta dish with wild boar confit, smoked feta, and pickled kohlrabi. Another fantastic dish. Lastly, we ended with steamed apple cake, caramel, and green apple sorbet. Wow! A great bar on Wellington street with excellent service! I tried making a reservation online (which I highly recommend because they can get very busy and only have outdoor patio dining), and was the first on the wait list. Tried our luck and they were still packed with no room. However, the staff was incredibly nice and accommodating and created a makeshift table with a heat lamp for us on the side! I had a delicious aperol spritz, and we tried some appetizers. Highly recommend the crispy nori and the charred octopus. The caramel corn was just okay. read more

Great beer selection and late night bites! The staff is all friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do. My group wasn't sure what to order, but our waiter was able to provide excellent recommendations based on our drink preferences and even put together a delicious charcuterie board for us. We couldn't have been happier with the recommendations! Everything was spot-on. I'd definitely recommend making a reservation for a weekend night - this place gets packed. I came here with some friends really late at night around 1230 am on a Saturday. The bar was still busy (good sign) even though the stretch of Hintonburg was rather quiet on a very cold night. They have an amazing selection of beers on tap and on bottle. My friend who knows his way around the beer and wine world ordered a bottle of the Cantillon, a beer based out of Brussels. I must say it was probably one of the top 10 beers I have tried and is one of the most hard to get and rare beers in the world. This bottle was 1 of around 60 available in North America so it was a great treat for us. The bar was also doing late night eats, which was Khao Soi noodles by chef Mike Frank. It was egg noodles in red curry broth with braised beef and mustard greens. I've never had Khao Soi before so it was definitely a new experience for me. Highly recommend this place for its service and selection of alcohol. It can get a little pricey because the quality of their food and drink are on the higher end. read more

One of my favourite places in the city for drinks. I especially love their cocktails but they have an incredible selection of beers and wines as well. My favourite drink is the the Bucky Mulloy cocktail pictured below with delicious rhubarb bitters. Their menu is always changing but my favourite item is the lamb galette (also pictured) and they always have delicious local cheese options on their charcuterie boards to choose from! Three stars for the fabulous beverages - in particular, I recommend the "delivery boy". But really, all of the drink choices are just incredible - the cherry stout is *amazing*. This place is a solid win if you're just out for drinks! However, guys, ya gotta pull up your socks with the food situation. Flavours: excellent. BUT. Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not bring me my teensy, tiny, overhyped "meal" just lukewarm. I like my food hot, especially if there is so very little of it. Also: there's this thing called bread that is a really nice starter to have kicking around, especially when the main food is so fancified as to leave you hungry. Look, nobody wants to see me drunk on ten too many delicious cocktails and not enough food. Just fix that one major detail, and we're headed for a full house of stars! read more

I loved the menu, food, atmosphere, and service here! I have no complaints. The food is worth the price you pay and is so elegantly presented. Everything tasted wonderful. We went out for dinner with a group of 8 this summer. They had their window wall opened so it was almost like a patio setting. They were able to accommodate our larger group but a reservation is definitely required. They are quite the busy place and not as big overall. They offer all different types of craft beers for those beer lovers out there! They have a pretty good drink menu too. I will definitely come back to try out other things on their menu. read more

Note that I don't post five star reviews often! I've been seeing pictures of drinks and food from this place a ton on Instagram so I had to come and try it out for myself! I had such a great time that I already want to come back! I came on weekday evening after work, and it became packed pretty quickly; I would suggest making a reservation. I got a spot at the bar, but on the side where they assemble the dishes, so it was really entertaining to watch them work. Firstly, the beers...this is the only place I've found in Ottawa so far that allows you to get sample sizes of a beer that they have on tap! They had about 20 on tap, and I tried about half. Instead of having to be stuck with a beer you don't like, just get a few on tap! My favourite was #5 on tap, which tasted surprisingly like a deep fortified red wine. I also tried a bottled beer; many I am told are seasonal or difficult to find. The servers really know their stuff, and you can tell they are truly passionate about beer when you speak with them. I had the pleasure of talking with Steve, Matt, and Andy. I have not had such friendly and knowledgeable service for a long time, and was thoroughly impressed. Now, not only are the beers amazingly unique, the food is also presented beautifully and tastes delicious! I tried: - the lamb carpaccio: My favourite was definitely the carpaccio due to the variety of flavors and the freshness of the meat! The slices of fig were a great compliment, and the wasabi brought freshness. - farfelle pasta with pigs blood: I chose this as the server said it was the richest tasting pasta and he wasn't wrong! Every bite was richly flavorful and I wanted more when I was done. - the brussel sprouts: beautifully presented, they were cooked well and slightly charred. I only wish there were more slices of prosciutto on top to add a meaty smokiness to the vegetable! The atmosphere is super cozy and dim, and it's loud enough so others don't hear your conversation. It's super fun to watch the servers make beer samples and assemble the food, so make sure to sit at the bar! I'll definitely be back to try more beer samples and more of their food menu. We turned up here specifically for their late night menu (Holly's Hot Chicken). We've been driving by since they opened and wondering what the place was about. First off, all of the staff were great - friendly and attentive. Décor was enjoyable and almost cozy with a dimmer feel to the place. Definitely a comfortable space to sit in and have a conversation - as many people were doing. The volume in the room is on the louder size due to all of the conversations going on. The beer menu is extensive and wonderful. Hint - take the time to reed the etched glass windows as you enter, which explains the name, and the beer menu. Well, I visited this place twice and have two different viewpoints its a solid 4. 1) I went here for drinks with my wife, we set on the bar had a wonderful conversation with the barman. GREAT selection of draft beers (a bit expensive for a pint) and had a wonderful experience. 2) We came again (because of last time) this time for the food, The place was noisier than I remembered, the food was really good BUT we asked them for the vegan versions (since they do offer a vegan option for a couple of the options) what they did is not replace ingredients like I expect at a chef-style restaurant but reduce ingredients so one plate was very dry because they removed the non-vegan sauce but didnt replace it with something else that will maintain the spirit of the plate. Very disappointing (and charged us the same). I WILL NOT come again for the restaurant, I WILL come again for the bar. read more

Unreal. Extensive selection of delicious craft beer and superb wine. I had the sour cherry ale - it was sour but not overbearing with just the right amount of hint of cherry. For appetizers, we had the salmon Rilletes - didn't have any expectation going into this but my God, delicious. We also had the tartare - by far the real winner here. Citrusy, rich, bursting with flavour. For the main, I had the monk fish. Again, never tried but that's the beauty of it all. New experiences, new flavours! Flaky, buttery, fresh - finished with tomato and what seemed to have been a braised meat. Ottawa is becoming a foodies heaven. I finally made it to Bar Lupulus for brunch today after having been for dinner a couple of times. I made a reservation for 11 am and the place filled up quickly after that. I had the Purgatory (a tomato based dish with rabbit sausage, eggs and cheese), my husband had the eggs benny with duck prosciutto and a friend had the French Toast--all of which we can give a thumbs up. I loved my meal--the tomato sauce was rich and the rabbit sausage super flavourful, with just the right amount of spice. Admittedly I was skeptical when the plates arrived as the portions looked small, but my husband and I were full by the end. My friend with the French Toast was still a bit hungry. I would definitely return for brunch! read more

Really unhappy with this experience. The atmosphere is amazing, the staff are amazing, the drinks are amazing (great beer selection), however the food (a most critical part) was sub par. The Carbon Capelini (Clams/Chili Brined Roe/Pickled Cauliflower/Arugula/Charred Egplant Puree $18) came with 4-5 tiny almost invisible clams and cold. The PESCE (Arctic Char/ Cedar Veloute/ Peas/ Turnip/ Oysters Leaf/ Cultured Cream/ Trout Roe $26) came cold. The flavors were interesting (not blow your socks off), the quantities were skimpy, both dishes came cold, not acceptable at that price point. Would not recommend this place for food based on that experience. Perhaps to enjoy some really good beer. read more

Wow - amazing food and great service! We came here with friends, and simply let the server decide what we ate. Everything that was brought out was fantastic. Particular highlights included the veal carpaccio, the beef tartare, and (of course) the warm brussels sprout salad. For dessert, I loved the brownie, while the others loved the apple pie. All of our dishes came with a detailed explanation for the very pleasant and knowledgeable server. Top that off with an outstanding beer menu! We will most certainly be back soon! read more

I tried several things over two evenings and everything was delicious. If you must chose one, I highly recommend the Wheatgrass Pappardelle. It's fine. Bar Lupulus strives to be a very play-it-safe, hipster-tastic restaurant that you would normally find in Toronto. The decor is nice and the beer selection is quite plentiful, but beyond that it doesn't quite seem to want to take any big risks. As for food, we had the beef tartare and the salmon rillettes (with salad). These dishes aren't big, however these two dishes alone put us in the $30+ range. I would have been more annoyed had the salmon rillettes not been as good as it was. The beef isn't bad, if not on the salty side. Overall, Bar Lupulus is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, if not a bit un-creative. I'll probably go back for drinks but for food I would maybe consider other options in the neighbourhood, especially since Absinthe, Foolish Chicken, Allium and Soca are literally two minutes away. read more

The food here has been a bit hit and miss over time, but the menu seems to have been overhauled more recently with a new chef and is much better. The portion sizes are a bit small, however. Went for the opening and had a great time! - The bar itself is gorgeous. Clean, comfortable, and well designed. - Staff is friendly and attentive, and they have a lot of people working to handle the demand. - The beer list is INSANELY good, but don't be afraid if you're not a beer drinker - they also have an impressive wine and cocktail list. I noticed a few favourites on the wine list including a Jura wine, and two Occhipinti offerings, the SP68 bianco and frappato. - No flights, but all tap beer is available in 4 oz pours so you can make your own, which is what I did during the Nickelbrook tap takeover. - Food is great. Small portions, and delicious. They're still working out a few kinks and making a few mistakes, but nothing that can't be corrected, and overall it's pretty smooth. Absolutely fantastic restaurant experience. Really enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The beer menu is extensive and well curated. I tried 5 beers and liked them all and I love that they have different sizes so you can sample a bunch. The food menu is fun and interesting and changes with what's seasonally available. I had the charcuterie, the agnolotti and the brownie with gelato. I wish the chartcuterie came with larger portions of meat, but it was otherwise delicious and the selection was varied and fun and came with lots of great accompaniments and the other two dishes were unique and very tasty. The staff was sooooo friendly. They were incredibly attentive to the point that one of them ran after us after we left because I accidentally left my broach and really made the experience great. And the manager was so nice! Both in helping me sort something out an just generally walking around the restaurant and helping out wherever he could. I would seriously recommend this restaurant to any foodie and anyone who enjoys craft beers. read more

Been becoming a regular over the past two months. With good reason. This is a top-notch spot for someone like me who loves flavourful things like sour ales and terroir foods. When Lupulus opened (built over the ruins of the thankfully-closed "Flying Banzini"), was unable to imbibe myself (was going through three months of a self-imposed alcohol-free cleanse). Did hear stories of that opening since then (with low-cost 4oz. pours from high quality bottles, including some excellent Belgian beers). Got serious FoMO out of that. But it's never too late to enjoy a really good thing. This place is quite likely to be much more than a short-lived story. My typical session, there, consists of sampling a few choice sour ales, of which there are typically at least four or five (much more than the typical beerpub's average of 0.2 sour beer per month). Became particularly fond of those well-crafted products from Small Pony Barrel Works, but many of the other taps are well worth the trip, including some creative cider from Revel and, more frequently these days, some reliable Québécois offerings. Though my very first impression was that the beer was too cold (a hunch echoed tonight by two other beer geeks from Montreal and Sherbrooke; maybe it's a Quebec thing?), it's quite obvious that people at Lupulus pay close attention to those beers and want to serve all of them in as close to ideal conditions as possible. They happen to have separate cooling systems to cover different beer styles, quite rare a feature for the region's beer scene. Did occasionally have some food over there, which was quite enjoyable and paired well with beverages. In my experience, it also feels like servers are becoming more comfortable and eventually offer me with the kind of personable service which makes such outings so much more pleasurable. Part of my reason for writing a review, tonight, is because this session really "changed the game", for me. There were actually fewer sour ales than usual and some nitpicky details could have been annoying. But it was a lovely time, partly because of the food and service. For the latter, it's really in minute details that good rapport makes a difference. From the knowing way someone responds to a request to the professional attitude demonstrated when something unexpected happens. As for the food, though, it was a tastebud-opening experience. Something as "simple" as a charcuterie platter can evoke some strong feelings. In this case, the Zacharie Cloutier cheese from Racine, Qc was just the right thing at just the right time. Brought vivid feelings from different times in my life, including some fond memories of Switzerland. And the pickled goodies to accompany the cheese and cured meats reminded me of those artisanal products favoured by those picky food lovers who go much beyond the "foodie" label. All this to say... A dining experience is a combination of many factors, including the diner's history and background. Tonight's time spent at Bar Lupulus was the ideal formula. read more
