For beer lovers, the Byward market area is "heaven". Every corner we turned, there were nice looking pubs! In warm months, you can see many outdoor patios filled up with relaxed, happy people sipping BEER! We chose Heart & Crown among others as our first-night-in-Ottawa dining place. We made sure that this place has a list of craft beer on tap, and those craft beer options should include items that we have never tried before! The beer we had: - Phillips Electric Unicorn IPA: Refreshing white IPA with good citrus punch - Loved it! - Perth Honey Lager: blessed to try this lovely local beer! - Dominion City Sunsplit IPA: Hoppy and malty - well balanced :) For the food we had: - Antipasto $21 - Jameson burger $21 - Fish and Chips $21 Antipasto had a generous amount of bocconcini, and I was pleasantly surprised by the crisp-golden chickpeas (still slightly warm:) well matched with other ingredients (diced genoa salami, heirloom cherry tomatoes, kale & romaine hearts). I enjoyed the texture of each ingredient. Personally, I thought prosciutto would be better suited than the diced salami. But the ingredients and the herb dressing came together very nicely. Enjoyable. Jameson burger's meat patty was impressively thick, full of meaty flavor, and it was coated with the right amount of B.B.Q. sauce. They used fluffy brioche-type buns that had a very rich flavor. Fish had a very light coating, which does not ruin the goodness of the thick, large, and juicy Haddock. Tartar sauce and slaw that came with Fish & Chips were also great. This time, the weather got a bit colder side as the sun set in, so we stayed inside. I had the Irish whiskey BBQ sauce burger and seafood chowder. The burger and chowder were delicious. There's plenty of seafood in the chowder. The sweetness from the burger striked a perfect balance with the saltiness from the seafood chowder. The service left a bit to be desired. I was seated in front of the door. They had double doors but one of the door was propped open all the time. The cold winter came in every time someone enters or exits. The waitress that seated people couldn't care less if I was ready to order or to get my bill. She didn't even bother letting other waitress (presumably the one responsible for my table) know that I wanted to order or to get my bill. I waited at least 10 mins after speaking to the waitress sitting people before realizing I should have spoken to another. It sucks that their staff don't communicate with each other. read more

I think this is a great neighbourhood pub with a good alcohol selection, live music every day, and really tasty comfort pub food. The chowder (Nova Scotia Haddock, salmon, shrimp, scallop, bacon, potatoes, celery, onion, dill cream broth w/ rosemary garlic toast) is incredibly hearty and thiccc with three Cs. This is the kind of soup you drink to stay full for the rest of the day. The fish & chips had a perfectly battered piece of fish and nice thick fries. While Chez Lucien down the street has a much bigger burger, the Jameson Burger here hits all the right notes with a juicy patty and a delicious bbq sauce. I'm still key leery of indoor dining, so a stop on a patio with a friend for a pint or few of Guiness, plus wings and nachos was a perfect way to meet up again. Nachos were loaded with cheese and jerk chicken; wings, also jerk, were well cooked and meaty, but were a bit light on spice (but it like great, so most people probably would find them fine). Service was friendly, tables were well spaced. The current layout of the Market, with the focus on people and dining, is great; here's hoping that Ottawa is smart enough to keep that focus going forward. read more

The Byward market has many taverns vying for attention, and the Heart & Crown is just another one trying to stand out. We went to visit since it was suggested for some decent drinks. We were seated indoors. The decor is about as much as you'd expect for an Irish Pub, aside from the fact that it was rather dark. A musician was performing there. One of the customers recognized a song he began singing, got up the stage, and sang in tandem. The drink menu is alright. I wasn't able to find anything that stood out to me aside from the Dominion IPA, which I ordered. I didn't try their food menu, unfortunately. The drinks came by quickly with thanks to our server, who accommodated us pretty well. For the drink experience, I thought the Heart & Crown was just alright. The Heart and Crown is an Irish Pub chain. My husband and I used to come to this location a lot when he was my boyfriend and he lived downtown. Then we moved away from the downtown core, and lots of new and more exotic places opened up in the Byward Market. So prior to my most recent visit, I'd say my last time at this Heart and Crown was over 5 years ago. Anyway, we were getting together with some friends and one of them suggested the Heart and Crown. It's just like I remember it. Standard pub fare that's good, with prices that are not cheap, but not outrageous. I was working late that night, so I joined the group just as everyone was finishing their dinners. It didn't take the server too long to come over and ask me if I wanted a drink. I was driving, so I just got a half soda half orange juice and asked for the food menu. My drink and menu came pretty quick. I got the Shrimp Salad ($17). The menu said it was romaine and spinach, but they snuck some iceberg in there. Boo! However, the salad had a good amount of plump shrimp. Yay! It also had bacon, pickled onions, tomatoes, a boiled egg, and parmesan cheese pieces. It usually comes with a honey herb and Dijon dressing, but that dressing apparently has seeds in it, so I opted for the Balsamic dressing. Overall, I enjoyed the salad (would have enjoyed it more without the iceberg lettuce though). The flavours mixed together well, and although the salad lacked a crunchy element, it had different textures so it wasn't one dimensional. Service was competent. Decor is typical Irish Pub. Tables are close together and it's loud in there. For a chain pub it's one of the better ones in the Byward Market. read more

What a great find for me and my wife!! We parked in the garage across the street and were looking at the map in front of the restaurant. One of the wait staff asked where we were thinking of going and then gave us great directions. Based on that, we came back for lunch! The restaurant is gorgeous, definitely the Irish pub feel. We asked to sit outside, but in the shade. We were led to an alley, which made me think "what in the world...." until we hit the end of the alley and got to a courtyard that was almost magical! It was spectacular! The menu is varied and very interesting. We had a hard time deciding on what to order and the waitress was a great help. My wife had the jerk chicken sandwich and I had the Jameson burger. My wife was a little apprehensive about the sandwich as she's not fond of a lot of spice. The food was well presented and tasted even better than it looked! My burger was one of the best burgers I've ever had. Smothered in mushrooms and Jameson BBQ sauce with onions & arugula on a very fresh bun. It was a perfect burger - big, juicy (not greasy!), amazing flavors. My wife loved the jerk chicken sandwich! She said the spicy level was perfect - lots of flavors that worked very well together, definitely something she would order again. And the sides... We didn't want the standard fries and there are some great other sides available. My wife had the roasted vegetables and she said she could have just had those and been very happy with lunch!! I was allowed a small taste and they were really good. I had a side of mashed potatoes (it's an Irish pub!) and they didn't disappoint. They were real potatoes, topped with green onion and just perfect! I wish we had thought to take pictures, but the smells were too much to resist diving right in! This spot is just humongous and what seems like a few pubs side by side is one giant operation. They have plenty of seating and an OK beer selection. I tried the lamb shank and friends ordered a chicken curry dish. The lamb shank was OK not great (I was expecting it to be completely fall of the bone this needed a tad more cooking time). It was okay, but for the amount I paid, I expected more...I didn't see hand hearts of palm, and the 5 pieces of tuna were fine but how expensive is it to add more veggies. Definitely not worth the money, and not enough for a hungry girl that has walked through Ottawa all day. My husband got the Buffalo Chicken Wrap Frank's Buffalo Red Hot Breaded Chicken, Shredded Lettuce, Tomatoes, Bermuda Onions, Canadian Cheddar Cheese, Ranch Dressing, Flour Tortilla served with fries. As someone who has worked in the bar and restaurant industry for 25 years I can say without a doubt that my experience last Friday was one of the worst since I was too young to know any better. I don't live in Ottawa anymore but have fond memories of Heart and Crown from visiting prior to Covid lockdowns. It seems that something must have changed. My friends and I were able to beat the rush after the Bluesfest show (Rage were awesome even with an injured Zack). We didn't have to wait too long in line in order to get a table on the patio. There was a $5 cover charge. I'm not used to paying a fee to sit at a pub but I understand that it's the busy season and there's high demand. We paid the charge and took a table to the right of the patio entrance. We waited for a short time before I asked if there was a server on the way. We were told that there was no table service on the patio. This was around midnight on a Friday after Bluesfest. My friends and I were waiting for the rest of our group to arrive (we were 3 and expected 3 more and had told the "host" to whom we paid our $15 that). So I went to the bar and got us some drinks. As there was still no table service after our first round I went back to the bar to order another round. This time when I came back I was confronted with the situation of two our party (the rest had shown up my now) being asked to pay the cover charge again due to the fact that they wanted to smoke cigarettes and had leave the patio. Let me repeat: two of our party were told (I had to argue HARD to get this overturned) that they had to pay a cover charge again to get back to the table where they had just been sitting. By this point we had finally gotten a server. She did a great job considering the conditions. Our party of 6 had arrived however we had one late guest try to join us later. He was told that he could not, despite the fact that the patio was not full. It was suggested by the host and the security guards that he go around to the other entrance to the bar and pay $20 to get in. JUST TO RECAP: my friends and I paid $5 each to self-serve for an hour. Security or the "Hosts" literally tried to extort us by charging cover twice for having 2 of go for a smoke (directly in front of our table I should add). When we had a late addition to our party they insisted that he pay 4 times the cover despite the fact that there was plenty of room in our section. This is a really really bad look for Ottawa in general let alone the establishment. I'm not expecting to hear back from the owners as I figure that this is the type of business they encourage. The only near-sympathy I received was from our waitress and one of the security guards. I could tell that they felt sorry for our situation but knew that management and ownership would either do nothing or were actively promoting this type of business. Unfortunately my other guests don't have the time to post reviews like this but rest assured that if we could all give negative points we would have. Considering the location and history of this bar I doubt that it will close any time soon, but I will never forget the way that we were treated last Friday. Shameful. Utterly shameful. read more

Heart and Crown has been a great place for the people of Ottawa to come sit down, have a drink, and enjoy classic pub cuisine. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was greeted very kindly by the wait staff, who were very happy to guide me to the table, where my group was sitting at. I had an open mind when I was deciding what to order since there were many Irish selections that I wanted to try for myself. One of the waitresses strongly recommended the Guinness Beef Stew, and that was what I ordered for myself. When the stew arrived at our table, it was freshly prepared as when I took my first bite, it was steaming hot. The stew had a lot of flavour from the amount of Guinness in the stew. There were huge pieces of braised beef, which was nice in terms of the amount of quantity for the price. In terms of the interior design, you can get feel that you are inside a typical pub in Ireland in terms of decor, ambiance, and what the wait staff are wearing for their uniforms. It is an amazing atmosphere to be in, and I certainly believe it will be even livelier, especially during Senators/RedBlacks games. Overall, I had a great meal at this establishment and I certainly will be back for more to try the other Irish pub creations. The question you must ask yourself before going here is this: am I okay with receiving terrible, awful service for only "good" food and drinks? Without a doubt, the worst pub service I've ever received. I'm generally pretty lenient if a place is busy or the kitchen is slow. In this case however, it took a hot second for our group to be seated even though there were at least 5 empty tables inside and several outside. From the slow seating, things only became worse. After being seated, we waited for (honest to god) more than 15 minutes before someone brought us menus. After getting the drink menu, we mentioned we were wanting to order food too--it was about 7PM after all. It took another 15 minutes to get food menus and that only happened because we sent a scouting party to go find a waiter. At this point, we're about 45 minutes post-arrival. We finally give our orders to the waitress. I get having a bad night and I also understand being overwhelmed, but in food service, that's sort of the name of the game, especially in pubs. Don't take it out on the patrons that are going to (theoretically) pay your tips. I mean rolled eyes, audible huffs, refusals to make changes to submitted orders, etc. The waitress was unbelievably rude. Like...call-home-and-confer-with-your-mom-to-gauge-how-truly-audaciously-rude-the-service-is rude. After another 45 minutes stint, we did get food. This place is amazingly large inside! It's like a whole bunch of restaurants and bars have been combined into one. When every other restaurant in ByWard had an hour-long wait for a table, Heart & Crown was able to seat us instantly! (Well, after following the hostess through what seemed like three different buildings). and everything went downhill from there. Our food, though not bad, was nothing special. But it sure took forever to get to us, including one friend who didn't get his meal until after everyone else was finished (we complained so they comp'ed it). Meanwhile, they started removing tables all around us as soon as the customers were finished eating, and a live band started setting up, and the bar scene started to get going. It seemed like a good start for a night of bar-hopping, but we were there for dinner! Service was altogether lacking. In summary, I'd avoid this place for dinner. For drinks, I would go back. My last night in town I took out clients for some food and drink. They recommended this place (or rather, decided this was not as crazy as some of the other places and had lots of beers), so we came in. 'Twas a fun time of food, beer, and music. We transitioned from an outside patio, enjoying the afternoon sun, to inside, noshing on the Canadian version on nachos. It is a pretty large sprawling place. And getting to the restroom that I had to use a few times in order to make room for more... water... was kind of a pain to get to - going down a narrow flight of stairs. That was pretty much my only complaint, the servers and bartenders were attentive and cheerful. There were plenty of people hanging out in all areas, but it definitely got more crowded as the evening wore on. It was a pretty sparse crowd inside because the locals knew to hang out in the atrium where the live music was playing. Band was solid (lots of Eagles), the crowd was dancing it up (they may have started sampling the libations a little early) and all was right with the world. The fish and chips were plentiful and exactly the way you would expect them: greasy, messy and delish. The fish batter was right on. The fries were solid. If they were wrapped in a newspaper, you could close your eyes and imagine you were in the UK. The beer was cold and the server was more than helpful in providing additional pints. A beacon of light in my dark Canada Day weekend. Sunday, July 2nd. Every single place is crowded, and has run out of food. Hordes of people are wandering around aimlessly like zombies, exhausted from having spent the previous day waiting in line. We were looking for a nice pub where we could sit down, enjoy a cold one, and grab a bite. The first place we had tried had run out of half the food items on its menu. At that point, the five of us are feeling down and are about to give up. And then we spot two ladies seated on the terrace, enjoying what looks like the most amazing pitcher of sangria. We've found the pub to save us. There's no waiting line because there's plenty of room. Walking into the Heart&Crown pub is quite an experience. "I feel like I'm in Doctor Strange", "Did we just enter a new dimension?", "This place is bigger than my house." Snippets of our conversation as our hostess guides us to our table in the back patio. We are in awe. We get the pub platter to share and it's great. I get the smoked salmon sandwich and its honestly one of the best pub foods I've ever had. At some point it starts raining, and we begin to dread the walk back to the Airbnb. But at that same time, a band comes out and starts setting up. We stay for a bit, as we wait for the rain to die down. The whole vibe for the night ends up being very... Canadian?? The band plays covers of country songs, people are line dancing, someone shouts "Play a Johnny Cash song!!" and the band takes on the request. I feel like I'm a side character in a fairy tale, and it feels great. A quick glance at the other reviews shows mostly an average sentiment towards the pub. And I totally get that. On any other day, I would've probably been like "eh, this is just a pub that does normal pub things and serves normal pub food". But on that night, the Heart & Crown pub was there for us. We were in town and walking around looking for a pub grub type place. We chose this one in an area where one is spoilt for choice when looking for pubs. I guess it is a chain of sorts in the Ottawa area. The atmosphere is very much like a real pub in Ireland. I got a snakebite which here means something totally different than I am used to (an ale and cider and NOT a stout and cider). The fish and chips were good although we got a kid's meal version ($6) and an adult portion ($15) and it was literally the same amount of food for both which made no sense. The kids plate just had three pieces of fish to the adult's one. The fish was battered well and was not too greasy. My friend got a sandwich called an after school special or something- soooooo good. They had room for a live band which I'm assuming was going to arrive but I left before that even started. Had dinner and a few beers. Everything was great. I'll recommend the buffalo chicken wrap, the Guinness Stew (I think that's what it was called) and the Irish Onion Soup. These were just some of the meals that were ordered with the group I was with. Oh and of course the classic chicken fingers and fries, which you can't really go wrong anywhere.
