Fantastic food as you can see the presentation. The decor was spectacular and the swift service.

A very Irish pub in a busy part of Ottawa! This is a great hangout spot and has tons of indoor and outdoor seating options! I noticed that most of the Irish pubs here have the same menu, so you can't go wrong with any of them. I like to stick to the Irish stews and burger ;)

For beer lovers, the Byward market area is "heaven". Every corner we turned, there were nice looking pubs! In warm months, you can see many outdoor patios filled up with relaxed, happy people sipping BEER! We chose Heart & Crown among others as our first-night-in-Ottawa dining place. We made sure that this place has a list of craft beer on tap, and those craft beer options should include items that we have never tried before! The beer we had: - Phillips Electric Unicorn IPA: Refreshing white IPA with good citrus punch - Loved it! - Perth Honey Lager: blessed to try this lovely local beer! - Dominion City Sunsplit IPA: Hoppy and malty - well balanced :) For the food we had: - Antipasto $21 - Jameson burger $21 - Fish and Chips $21 Antipasto had a generous amount of bocconcini, and I was pleasantly surprised by the crisp-golden chickpeas (still slightly warm:) well matched with other ingredients (diced genoa salami, heirloom cherry tomatoes, kale & romaine hearts). I enjoyed the texture of each ingredient. Personally, I thought prosciutto would be better suited than the diced salami. But the ingredients and the herb dressing came together very nicely. Enjoyable. Jameson burger's meat patty was impressively thick, full of meaty flavor, and it was coated with the right amount of B.B.Q. sauce. They used fluffy brioche-type buns that had a very rich flavor. Fish had a very light coating, which does not ruin the goodness of the thick, large, and juicy Haddock. Tartar sauce and slaw that came with Fish & Chips were also great. This time, the weather got a bit colder side as the sun set in, so we stayed inside. But I will enjoy their lovely patio area next time for sure!

    Chowder

I think this is a great neighbourhood pub with a good alcohol selection, live music every day, and really tasty comfort pub food. The chowder (Nova Scotia Haddock, salmon, shrimp, scallop, bacon, potatoes, celery, onion, dill cream broth w/ rosemary garlic toast) is incredibly hearty and thiccc with three Cs. This is the kind of soup you drink to stay full for the rest of the day. The fish & chips had a perfectly battered piece of fish and nice thick fries. While Chez Lucien down the street has a much bigger burger, the Jameson Burger here hits all the right notes with a juicy patty and a delicious bbq sauce. The nachos have this delicious seasoning and a really good jalapeno queso cheese. I recommend getting it with the brisket!

The facade of the building doesn't do the inside justice!

Comfort food and amazing Irish atmosphere. Love the courtyard patio for drinks, snacks or a meal. Lots to choose from! And look at their vegan menu by clicking on the QR code - lots of food and drink options

I really enjoyed this spot. My brother and I went here for dinner on a Saturday at around 5:00pm. It wasn't packed, but busy. Lots of people out in the beer garden and inside eating. Great spot to watch soccer. We had apps and entrees and we loved everything we ate. We also tried their beers and they were good too. Our service was quick and food was too. I would recommend my friends check this place out!

    Guiness!

I'm still key leery of indoor dining, so a stop on a patio with a friend for a pint or few of Guiness, plus wings and nachos was a perfect way to meet up again. Nachos were loaded with cheese and jerk chicken; wings, also jerk, were well cooked and meaty, but were a bit light on spice (but it like great, so most people probably would find them fine). Service was friendly, tables were well spaced. The current layout of the Market, with the focus on people and dining, is great; here's hoping that Ottawa is smart enough to keep that focus going forward.

    Shrimp Salad $17.

The Heart and Crown is an Irish Pub chain. My husband and I used to come to this location a lot when he was my boyfriend and he lived downtown. Then we moved away from the downtown core, and lots of new and more exotic places opened up in the Byward Market. So prior to my most recent visit, I'd say my last time at this Heart and Crown was over 5 years ago. Anyway, we were getting together with some friends and one of them suggested the Heart and Crown. It's just like I remember it. Standard pub fare that's good, with prices that are not cheap, but not outrageous. I was working late that night, so I joined the group just as everyone was finishing their dinners. It didn't take the server too long to come over and ask me if I wanted a drink. I was driving, so I just got a half soda half orange juice and asked for the food menu. My drink and menu came pretty quick. I got the Shrimp Salad ($17). The menu said it was romaine and spinach, but they snuck some iceberg in there. Boo! However, the salad had a good amount of plump shrimp. Yay! It also had bacon, pickled onions, tomatoes, a boiled egg, and parmesan cheese pieces. It usually comes with a honey herb and Dijon dressing, but that dressing apparently has seeds in it, so I opted for the Balsamic dressing. Overall, I enjoyed the salad (would have enjoyed it more without the iceberg lettuce though). The flavours mixed together well, and although the salad lacked a crunchy element, it had different textures so it wasn't one dimensional. Service was competent. Decor is typical Irish Pub. Tables are close together and it's loud in there. For a chain pub it's one of the better ones in the Byward Market.

    lamb shank

This spot is just humongous and what seems like a few pubs side by side is one giant operation. They have plenty of seating and an OK beer selection. I tried the lamb shank and friends ordered a chicken curry dish. The lamb shank was OK not great (I was expecting it to be completely fall of the bone this needed a tad more cooking time). I think one comes here for the ambiance and chat so food being acceptable is just fine. Give this spot a try if you are out of options.

Having a cold one in a beautiful courtyard patio

This is a classic Irish pub...good selection of beer, character style building, perhaps has seen better days...beautiful outdoor patio. What is missing is the food. It was in general okay, but a few tweaks it could have been good. Our family was seated outside, and it was lovely. A hot Ottawa day where having a cold beer amongst the cobblestones and flowers is a perfect pairing. Our server was friendly and helpful and extremely busy on this summer night. I had the Ahi tuna & Avocado Ocean Wise Seared Ahi Tuna, Avocado, Charred Corn, Hearts Of Palm, Heritage Greens, Red Onions, Cilantro Lime Dressing . It was okay, but for the amount I paid, I expected more...I didn't see hand hearts of palm, and the 5 pieces of tuna were fine but how expensive is it to add more veggies. Definitely not worth the money, and not enough for a hungry girl that has walked through Ottawa all day. My husband got the Buffalo Chicken Wrap Frank's Buffalo Red Hot Breaded Chicken, Shredded Lettuce, Tomatoes, Bermuda Onions, Canadian Cheddar Cheese, Ranch Dressing, Flour Tortilla served with fries. At least his portion was filling...but average...nothing different than what you can find in a chain restaurant. My daughter chose the turkey clubhouse with soup. This one was the real winner. Tasty, filling, and well executed. My youngest had the waffle fries with the curry sauce. Actually the curry sauce was the best thing about this restaurant. Come here for the atmosphere, the beautiful patio, the friendly servers ...but not for the food.

Irish pub? Not really, music is contemporary top 100 pop. Decor leaves something to be desired. No scotch eggs, closest is fish n chips. The rest of the menu seems uninpired. Good beer selection, but not something that screams "this is the place for British beers". Will go elsewhere next time.

Sorry but the place is looking a little rundown and tired. Been to the one on Preston street and found the ambiance so much nicer. Food was good but not outstanding. Fries arrived so cold, we sent them back. We were lucky because we had a great waitress and service was good but the poor woman was running in and out of the restaurant to serve the patio as well as inside and she was clearly overtaxed. Understaffing problem?

My father-in-law read about this pub online and wanted to check it out, so he, my husband and I…read morewent for dinner on a Sunday evening. It's a cute little Irish Pub. I had never been to Carleton Place before, and don't know the town at all, but the street it's on looks like the "main street" of small towns. There's no attached parking lot, but there's street parking and a public parking lot across the street (don't know if you have to pay for the lot, but street parking was free). We shared the bruschetta to start ($11). It was 6 pieces with a garnish of mixed greens in the middle (like a tiny salad). The bruschetta was good. It was nicely broiled and had cheese and garlic along with the diced tomatoes. I had the Coconut Crusted Haddock ($22). It came with 2 huge pieces of haddock. (You also have the option of 1 piece for $18). It usually comes with rice and steamed vegetables, but I was told I could substitute the rice for fries or mashed potatoes. I went with fries. The fries were regular cut and were ok. The steamed vegetables were mostly cauliflower and carrots, but I also had a few pieces of green peppers. They were ok, and made me feel good about myself that I had vegetables with my meal. The fish was excellent. Really flakey and delicious. It came with a creamy sauce and I'm so happy it came on the side and not poured over the fish. So the fish stayed crispy and I could control the amount of sauce. My husband had the Village Meat Pie ($18). He also got fries and steamed vegetables. The meat pie was a slice of a larger pie and not a small individual pie. It looked really meaty, but also had some vegetables in it. He enjoyed his meal. My father-in-law had the No Blarney Burger with fries ($17). It was a burger with bacon and cheese. He enjoyed it. Service was friendly. Decor is typical Irish pub. I enjoyed my meal and I think it's a cool pub. I definitely recommend it for people who live in Carleton Place or are passing through Carleton Place. However, I personally would not make the drive from Ottawa just to eat there again, as I feel there are comparable places closer to Ottawa, but if I was already in Carleton Place for some other reason, I would be open to returning to St James Gate.

Food was delicious and plentiful, service was great! It's a cosy, smaller room, but lovely!read more
