They renovated since I came here last. Large spacious bar area, and less crowded vibe. Real wood tables give it a really nice touch as well. Dimmer lit so perfect for a night out or a date. ZABU has been doing Korean fried chicken since before Korean fried chicken popped off, and it's my number one go to spot. The wings are incredibly flavoured. I always get the half half wings because I don't like drumsticks and only want the flatties, so this is perfect for me. The hot wings are actually hot but have a LOT of flavour, super umami and addictive! And the original soy wings again, superior flavour to any other KFC place I've tried! I have to go back and forth between them so I don't get too spiced out. Best part for me is they are crispy but not greasy. They get the perfect balance. I do come here often and this place usually straddles a 3-4 star rating for me. The last few haven't been the best so I'm doing a 3. This place gets pretty busy on weekends and wait times for food aren't very consistent in my opinion. Sometimes we luck out and get food in less than 15 minutes, other times, it takes 30+ plus for anything. This latest round, we had the 18 piece Soy Wings, Fries, LA Galbi, Corn Cheese and Tteok-bokki. Soy Wings- the wings this time around weren't as crispy as I would have liked and lacked the garlic taste. Overall, the Fried Chicken & the drums and wings combo are probably my prefe orrred choice. The wings alone disappeared so fast with a group of over 3 people. Fries - nothing special. They are super thin. Leaves a lot to be desired considering the price point. Corn Cheese - the cheese definitely needed to be more melted as when it came out, it was clumped together and barely stringy/ pull apart. Tteok-bokki - Rice cakes were a nice firm /barely tender but picked up the sauce quite nicely. I would classify the spice to be more of a sweet profile than a spicy side. LA Galbi was delicious but price wise, rarely feels justified. Great cuts of meat, well sauced without being overly sweet. At times I feel this place needs more staff to service the customers. Perhaps it's all the take out delivery orders they face that deters from the service. Don't hate this place but don't love it either. Decided to check out this korean fried chicken place over the long weekend downtown since my siblings and i were strolling along robson. The menu had a pretty good selection, prices seemed pretty standard. First time having chicken wings at korean fried chicken joint and it wasn't too bad. The flavour was a heavy punch. Flavours are limited in terms of options though. But i think i prefer boneless or like bigger pieces. The corn cheese was semi disappointing because it wasn't like melted and baked on it. The cheese came off in a whole layer when you would grab some corn .. i prefer it to be blended in as that's what im used to everywhere else. Corn was pretty fresh tasting though. The kalbi grilled beef short ribs was tasty, pretty standard but a bit pricy to my liking. Fries weren't anything wowing but definitely something to snack on if you were to drink alcohol. The rabbokki was probably my favorite thing i ate there. Didn't get asked the spice level though ... but even if you go to Korea they don't ask you. So it's perfect if you want to train to build your spice tolerance for travelling haha. This place is goood to go socialize with a group of friends and if you want some drinks and to watch kpop music videos. Personally i think i've been to some better places so wasn't like a wow factor. WARNING: Think twice before visiting. It's no longer what it used to be! We used to come to this restaurant once or twice a week. Really enjoyed their Fried Chicken and the price was reasonable as well. Today we went back cause we missed their Sweet & Sour sauce Fried Chicken. We went from excitement to disappointment very quickly as we walked in to the restaurant. They replaced many tables and booths in favour of a huge Bar table(even though they already have a bar near the cashier area), which leads to not enough sitting, we were asked to sit outside or wait 10min for a table, while the bar table was empty. They also changed their menu significantly, removed 20% of the menu for chicken, increases the price of their dish. For example, a soy whole chicken that used to cost $19 in 7 years ago, now it prices at $40 (60% more than the inflation adjusted price). They also decreased the portion of their complementary condiments to only 25% (see photo attached) I heard recently the restaurant changed the management/owner. Very disappointing, probably will never will visit again. Music is less K-pop, more Americanized, just the entire restaurant vibes feel wrong. I think they want to change their restaurant from the once well known Korean Fried Chicken to a luxurious night bar. Terrible choice. If that's the case, they need a huge Renovation and get rid of the old designs. Staff services are not the problem, only problem with Management. I heard they have new owners and it's not as good as before but, I decided to get some chicken to go at 11:30 and called in on way there at 11:50pm from the hotel in Steveston. Zabu is a great spot with night time drinking vibes for friendly catch ups and hang outs. I came with 4 other friends and we immediately sat down and ordered. Service was prompt and all the waiters were very kind. The food is overall good but it didn't blow my mind either, especially since there's so much yummy Korean food in Vancouver. The fried chicken is flavourful and juicy - we actually ordered both regular and spicy and the spicy had quite a kick! I enjoyed the tofu soup the most as it wasn't overly salty and had lots of tofu and seafood inside. My favourite thing of all is definitely the pickled radish which ties the meal together and I love that Zabu gave us generous portions of that. For 5 people, it was around $25 per person incl. a bottle of Soju which was pretty standard. Overall, I recommend Zabu if you're in the area and are looking for a good chicken and beer spot! Heard great things about this place and came here to eat. We ordered half soy wings and drumsticks and a tofu soup on the side. Apples that were provided were marinated cucumbers, cabbage salad, pickled radish, bean thing and kimchi. Soy wings and drumsticks These were soo yummy. They were saucy yet still crunchy and it was delicious!! I did prefer the wings over the drumsticks as I found it to be more flavorful so maybe just wings next time Tofu soup, yummy! A go-to place when you're craving Korean style deep-fried chicken! Their chicken is great paired with drinks (you can go for the "chi-maek", which refers to pairing beer with chicken and is very popular in Korea). Chicken is definitely the highlight of the food here but there is a selection of other Korean dishes. My friend and I tried this place a few days ago as we're looking to expand our Korean fried chicken repertoire in the city. There's nothing quite like a nice plate of fried chicken on a hot summer day! The service here was friendly, albeit a little rushed, but that's to be expected at such a popular place. We ordered a 6pc soy original wings, their yangnyeom chicken, an order of tteokbokki, and a green salad to share. The chicken: The soy chicken was our favourite. Crispy, hot, flavourful - the soy marinade flavour soaks all the way to the bone. Very tasty - we wished we had gotten a full order of this instead of the yangnyeom. The yangnyeom was also very good - their cinnamon blend makes it pretty unique. I wasn't sure if I was a fan at first, but the more we ate, the more it grew on us. It IS a bit heavier, as expected of yangnyeom chicken, so we did wish that it came with an option to get a half order or wings rather than the whole chicken. The tteokbokki: As a lover of spicy food, I enjoyed the kick this had (my friend thought it was a bit too spicy). I do wish the soup was less salty/sweet as it does make the appetizer kind of heavy. Yummy and comforting, nonetheless! The green salad: Tbh, we could've done without ordering this one. Just a standard salad, nothing really special for the price. I did like the chopped apples in it. This is the best fried chicken I've had in ages. I Uber this place and it was still crispy when it arrived. Flavorful. I didn't feel gross afterwards. The soy and hot versions, can't go wrong. I ate in the restaurant once and hated the experience. I felt like the wait staff didn't care. But Uber allowed me to have the great food without the shitty attitude from the servers. The chicken is alright, but don't expect anything amazing. It's more "night out food" than something I'd actively try to go and eat. There are much better Korean chicken places in the city yet Zabu is priced in-line with them (if not more expensive) because of their location. Drinks are a kind of pricey for what you get (especially talking about the flavored sojus), but I mean it's in DT. It is a decent environment but feels more like a backup plan since it is usually not too difficult to get a seat. If you're willing to wait for really, really good KFC (Korean Fried Chicken), then this is the place for you! The wait can be upwards of an hour+, but those wings are so worth it! We ordered the zabu soy wings, the zabu hot wings, and also a whole chicken. But really just order the wings, it may be more expensive, but I think they do the wings much better than the whole chicken. The wings are crispy, sweet, salty, savory, and just too tempting to pass up. If you think I'm wrong, then you are not human. So what do they do to their wings? I will paraphrase their website: the chicken is fried 3 times, and hand-brushed with their special sauce made with soy, garlic and "sun kissed red chili pepper". Now doesn't that sound mouth-watering?! And don't forget to pair your wings with sochu, sake or beer! Besides fried chicken, they've got other Korean dishes on the menu as well. I had the spicy tofu soup which was good. You'll get three Korean side dishes with your meal, kimchi and whatever the selection is for the day. Pickled radish typically accompanies the chicken, this may or may not tickle your fancy, but don't be a snob, eat it. Be warned that the place is loud, and vibrant. My friends and I were craving some Korean Fried Chicken during our trip to Vancouver (from St. Louis), and looking through Yelp, it was pretty hard to find restaurants that were mainly serving Korean Fried Chicken. Zabu looked like the best option out of the bunch, but we were hesitant since it had some negative reviews about the service. We ate at Zabu on a Monday night around 8pm and found the whole place packed. We had to wait a bit before sitting down. The menu at Zabu is pretty basic, there's different types of wings, other Korean food, and beer. We opted for a pitcher of Sapporo and two different types of wings: the soy ones and the hot ones. Our Sapporo arrived first with some radish appetizer and plates, but the chicken took a bit of time to come out. However, when it did, it did not disappoint. The chicken was hot, with great texture (a bit of a crunch), spices, and tenderness. The only disappointing part was not having enough chicken. The Sapporo beer was perfect to cool our mouths down for the "hot" chicken wings, which were pretty spicy in my opinion but so delicious. We ended up ordering another order of those "hot" wings. Soo goood. It ended up being a little pricey, maybe $20 USD per person, but I have no regrets and I crave it still again. Zabu makes me remember how good Korean Fried Chicken is. Would recommend and go again. We didn't have bad service, nor did we get added tip (but our party was only 3 people). It came with a side of coleslaw, and some cold pickled turnip. The chicken was a bit dry, but the tradeoff was that it wasn't covered in grease. The salad was a bit too gooey thanks to this extra mayo they dumped on top. The turnip was different in that it was served in a puddle of vinegar, but the pieces were crisp. The place was quite empty, and unfortunately there's a reason. Yes the food was decent, but the dish of chicken wasn't $20 good. I could've gone to some wings place and gotten 3 times the amount of food at a similar quality for that price. Ok their chicken is good! but we did our "as usual" order we make at every Korean restaurant we go to our staples. Seafood tofu hot pot, short ribs and japchae. I enjoyed all the chicken flavoured we ordered. We went with the soy and the original. It is a very busy place and super cold inside where your almost uncomfortable but bring a sweater or unless your drinking soju then no need. The ambiance feels more of a spot you would come for late night drinks and it's loud as hell in there with the k pop bumping. It isn't that expensive nor is it Bang for your buck. Perhaps it's due to the location. Came here with a friend recently and I was pretty excited because I had heard some pretty good things about the place. I've walked past Zabu for several years thinking it was one of the best places for Korean fried chicken. However, this was not the case. The place is quite dark and cramped, pretty typical for any kind of late night pub kind of place. Menu seemed kind of limited but they still offer a decent variety of chicken that could satisfy any palate that was open to trying new things. I think we ordered the original and the sang nyum chicken as a combo plus a strawberry soju cocktail to share. We also got a few side dishes as well. Original chicken was just okay in my opinion. I don't generally eat a lot of deep fried foods so I ended up eating the sang nyum one a bit more since it was a saucy one. I almost would have preferred having a whole place of that sang nyum since the taste was better. But overall it was just meh. I don't think i would necessarily recommend this place if someone asked for some good fried chicken. Strawberry Soju Cocktail was really tasty. It practically tasted like juice. But at the price of $16.99 was a bit ridiculous as it was the size of a regular soju bottle which sell for about $8 at a liquor store. While I don't know exactly what is inside the soju cocktail, I really couldn't justify the price as I could easily drink one by myself without a problem. Service was pretty minimal here. I also feel like the tables are a bit to big for the space which makes it awkward to walk past other tables without accidentally bumping into someone. The chicken is crispy on the outside (I believe they fry it twice) and soft and delicate on the inside. * Good Korean Fried Chicken * I've been eyeing this new restaurant pretty regularly and waiting until I happened to find it open. They seem to have rather sporadic hours. But I passed by yesterday and the open sign was lit - so in I went. This is a typical Korean fried chicken joint. Basically the menu consists of various preparations of chicken, a few random other dishes, and beer choices. I ordered the yangnyeom dak, but somehow there was a mixup in the kitchen and instead I received the soy sauce chicken. They were not particularly busy, but I didn't want to cause a hassle and said it would be fine. They announce on their menu that they use fresh, never frozen, chicken and that they prepare your serving after you order it. I have to say it was actually worth the wait. The light crispy rice flour based batter encased the juicy well marinated tender chicken. There was a nice garlic flavour to the marinade which really rounded out the flavours as it was combined with a slight saltiness from the soy and a hint of sweetness (I'm guessing honey?). Randomly after stuffing ourselves with some ramen comfort food, we hopped across the street for some Korean style fried chicken wings at Zabu. I enjoyed our chicken feast. We ordered two types of super friend Korean style chicken: the regular soy and hot and spicy. The soy was mighty crispy and dripping in deep-fried goodness. It made for a very appealing snack. I really dug the spiciness and flavour of the hot wings. It had a nice glazed flavour to it as well. I washed down my fried wings with some Sapporo. The chicken was pretty delicious, all in all. And FYI, Zabu's open late until 2am every night if you're ever hankering for some fried goodness late at night. read more

So I'm not a big hot wings kind of person but I have to admit even though the wings were on fire, it was so good. Also the soy garlic is BOMB. Original was decent but I think too bready and you definitely need to add the salt mixture to give it flavour. The yogurt soju was amazing. I've never had that before and it was like drinking juice. That can get dangerous if you know what I mean. Unfortunately it costs like $16 for one bottle. And it's not much. You'll probably get 7 shots out of it. Wonder why soju is so expensive.... Either way grab a beer and eat the wings. They're too good to pass up. A bit pricey here but if they knock it out of the ball park with the flavours.. I'd come back in a second. They've got patio tables so you can enjoy the fresh air while eating... Well only when there isn't any smog. read more

Kfc. Nope not Kentucky fried chicken. I'm talking bout Korean friend chicken. Salty and a hint of sweet is probably the best way to describe their soy garlic frozen chicken. Crunchy and light on the outside yet steaming hot and tender in the inside. Tried the cinnamon flavour as well but their original is where it's at. Their Dolsot bibimbap (we have tried the seafood one as well as the original one) has good flavours. Pretty good quality. Service is fast. No complaints there. It's always busy here especially on weekends, so be prepared for a bit of a wait! Definitely one of Vancouver's top places for kfc! read more
