Compared with every bialy I've had since, the old cliché holds: there really must be something in the New York City water. Bagels are not even in the conversation. What I love and remember about a bialy is the texture -- chewy, not doughy. Barney Greengrass's onion bialys have real heft, more than the ones I used to pick up in the wee hours on the Lower East Side off Delancey street. I finally pulled the trigger and ordered three dozen. They overnighted them via FedEx. At $2 each the bialys themselves were a bargain: $72. The shipping is what stings -- $109.01. Total: $181.01. Expensive? Yes. Worth every penny? Also yes. Three dozen is a lot, but sharing them with family and friends who have never had a real one more than justifies it. Compare that to breakfast out -- McDonald's, a diner, a pub, your favorite steak house -- and this is still a bargain. Anthony Bourdain called this place the best breakfast in the universe, and he was a regular. After he died, they set his usual order at an empty table. That tracks. This is only done correctly in New York City. Take a serious look at the "Sturgeon King: Barney Greengrass". Final note: Set Toaster To Crunchy - Apply Heavy Amounts Of Irish Butter!

So when I waltzed in to this famous deli, I almost refused the menu. I already knew what I wanted! At the last minute I decided to dial back my confidence and it was lucky I did. Because that's when I saw that the sturgeon platter cost $51! Clearly this was meant for sharing, not for a lone diner like myself. A more reasonable order for singletons is the sturgeon appetizer, which is basically a platter for one. The cost: $27. Included is thick slices of sturgeon (as I first timer I poked at it to make sure it was not turkey), cream cheese, olives, capers, lettuce, onion and tomato, as well as one bagel. Really there is enough on the platter for two bagels, but an extra one will cost ya...$5 extra. And if you want a flavored cream cheese instead of plain, that will be $5 extra too. I blame Bourdain for these inflated prices, but also I don't: I have gained so much from his insightful writing and reporting that it is hard to complain. About the restaurant: its classic deli feel has been preserved, but it also feels a bit dingy. That was ok for me, but some may prefer to order from the deli counter - which has a prodigious menu of smoked fish - and create their own spread at home. That way you can find more reasonably priced but just as good if not better bagels from elsewhere in the vast bagel offerings of New York City. In general, focus on what Barney Greengrass does best, which is smoked fish.

I'm so glad Broad Nosh Bagels & Deli popped up in my search, as it was exactly what I was looking to enjoy. A couple of us trekked the few blocks to find the storefront. Inside it was PACKED, and several groups and lines snaked around the dividers. But the line moved quickly between customers picking up to-go meals and placing orders at the counters. The display cases are beautiful and feature so many different kinds of cream cheese. (Who knew you could make a whole vat of Biscoff?) They also had many types of smoked fish and toppings for customers filing through. Once you order food, you take your ticket to the register where you can add any drinks. This also went fairly quickly. Food and drink order numbers were called out and checked with the receipts, although they called out a set of orders for several minutes and no one came to pick them up. There are a few tables there, but since customers wait to grab drinks and food near the front, the couple tables at the front were basically for crowd control. I definitely wouldn't try to eat there unless I happened to be going at a quieter time. I got the bagel with smoked salmon, and it was exactly what I had been craving. Their bagels are a quarter pound each, so you might even get two meals out of it if you have a fridge for storage. But even as good as the bagel was, the hot chai latte with oat milk was the star for me. It was so incredibly layered for flavor and fragrant, just lightly sweet. It did break apart and dropped onto my plate upon the third bite. It is amazing! I suggest warm-up the cookie in the microwave for approximately 1 minute. I purchased two (2) quantity of these delightful chocolate chip cookies. Delicious. I enjoyed mine with one glass of red wine which I did achieved equanimity state of mind. I was back at this restaurant a while ago, having previously eaten at their own location, which was…read moreloud and a bit too dark, almost feeling more like a gastropub than a Southern spot. By comparison, the new one is much better and much more fitting, while still being moderately loud but not earsplitting, presumably due to both the ceilings being a lot higher and the tables being more spaced apart. It's also a lot brighter, with plenty of mirrors on the wall and larger tables. As mentioned by most others, the portions here are rather massive for NYC, even in comparison to some diners and delicatessens, which makes the prices pretty reasonable. Our large group went here for something I rarely do: brunch. The servers were reasonably overwhelmed, but still friendly. Knowing how big the portions are, I only ordered the $22 Spicy Chicken Sandwich, which is typically served with pepper jack cheese, crispy onions, and hot sour pickles on a home-baked brioche bun. I did something I rarely do, which was ask for a substitution. In this case, it was cheddar instead of pepper jack, and it was obliged. The sandwich was quite large and a bit difficult to pick up, as it was pretty messy, but the flavor was nice. The chicken was juicy, the batter was pretty light, and there was a load of crispy onions. The pickles added a bit of sour crunch and a bit of heat, and the bun did just well enough to keep it all together. Overall, it was tasty. In terms of other dishes, there were a ton. I had one of the many tasty Deviled Eggs for $15, served with pickled mustard seed, smoked paprika, and pickle chips. From the same appetizer section, I particularly enjoyed the $13 Okra & Chilies, made from smoked & pickled okra, red pepper flakes, and scallion. I liked the smokiness, and the okra had some good grill marks, with this being the lightest dish on the table, outside of the Pickle Sampler someone else got. If you're looking to have a heart attack, I would order the decent $19 Poutine. Featuring fries smothered in brown gravy, cheese, and a hollandaise drizzle, I would compare it more to disco fries or other forms of loaded fries. This was due to the lack of cheese curds and the style of gravy. Outside of the comically massive portion, it's fine. In terms of other mains, a few had the two types of Smothered Chicken, either with sausage or mushrooms, for $24. Someone else ordered the non-spicy version of the same sandwich I got. Finally, another got the gigantic $24 Chicken & Waffles, consisting of buttermilk fried chicken, a golden waffle, house maple butter, and powdered sugar. There was also another entree, but I don't remember the details. I preferred this experience a lot more than the previous time and would recommend them for brunch, at least. Just come very hungry.
