On my first visit I had the Smoked & Savory sandwich on an everything bagel (I was really in the mood for whitefish). The sandwich is unlike any I've ever had. They put mustard, pickled peppers and pickled cucumbers. I'm really curious as to why the mustard is added. The mustard is very good but it overpowered the whitefish (maybe the employee making my sandwich put too much on?). The bagel and mustard together felt like I was eating a pretzel with mustard. The whitefish was good but again lost amongst all the other ingredients. The packaging they use is different. The sandwich was wrapped and placed standing up on a box. It wasn't so easy to wrap and put back in what I didn't finish. I also had to try the pastries. I had a muffin and shashoka bureka. The muffin was really good but didn't need the cheese filling. Recently discovered Safta's and honestly kind of obsessed. First of all, everyone who works there is as nice as can be....whether it's the guys on the AM shift or the gals on the PM shift. (And I've only been there three or four times now, so pls forgive me if I'm leaving anyone out!) Secondly, this unassuming - from the outside - cafe sets the gold standard when it comes to both cleanliness and tidiness. I mean, the environment is impeccably clean! (And I say this as someone who used to work in food retail: Wow, that's a tough standard to meet, namely when things get hectic. Well, post the pandemic, I'm allll about a clean eatery, so bring it.) Also, I love that it's so welcoming and spacious. One could easily grab a book or their laptop and stay there for a few hours - just hanging and studying or working. Thirdly, their matcha lattes are fabulous! : ) So far, I've only purchased cookies and matcha lattes from them, LOL, but everything was superb. Also, I've ordered their matcha lattes with both dairy milk and pistachio milk -- both options were terrific. So grateful for this soft spot in which to land, especially before or after work. Saftas's is an absolutely great addition to the Upper West Side. Doesn't matter if you are kosher or not. The food is delicious and the customer service is great. I had an engagement party and they did a great job catering it. read more

I stop at Safta, today, for a piece of chocolate bobka. I asked the man at the counter for one piece to be cut in half so I could share it with my wife. He then charged me $14.00. I did not realize that until I got home. When I checked the online menu bobka was listed at $6.00 per piece. Thus I was charged double. read more

Just had the pistachio halva, better than what I have been getting in Israel, highly recommended, looking forward to trying the halva ice cream. We wanted a light lunch and had the pre packaged tuna salad, it was very fresh, the mayonnaise was separate so I could choose how much to mix, I am always annoyed by tuna with too much mayonnaise, especially when trying to keep a diet. read more

I need to stay away from Safta's! Even though it's right there on the southwest corner of 86th and Broadway, I had never heard of it until I met some friends there on a Sunday morning. It was very busy, with the sweet-natured staff scrambling a bit, and there's good reason for that! The whole wheat bagel is the best I have had in a very long time. It was tender, not heavy, and had just the right amount of cream cheese. I couldn't resist taking home the chocolate chip brownie, and it was incredibly fudgy, just as it should be! I am afraid that I will go back for more, and will try the incredible-looking baklava, and the terrific-sounding ice cream and sorbet pops near the front door. Fortunately they are closed on Friday night and all day Saturday (fully kosher), so that will somewhat limit my opportunities to stuff myself! If you have to wait a minute or two for your order, rest assured it will be well worth it! read more
