While I've heard so many positive reviews about Jacob's Pickles, I was left a little disappointed. I ordered off their seasonal menu and got the blueberry and lemon pancakes. We all agreed that K "won" since everyone else's meal was subpar. The biscuits and gravy were soggy and cold. The other meal had tough chicken and undercooked potatoes. Our server was so sweet but didn't check on us often despite the restaraunt being fairly empty. What's left to say about Jacob's Pickles that hasn't already been said? We've been eating here since the beginning, but this was our first time at its new, expansive location on Columbus. The space was previously home to Gabriella's, a good tequila bar + fair Tex-Mex restaurant, and has been renovated with elegant, clean lines and mirrors that bring outside light deep into the restaurant. The time seems appropriate for a re-review. By way of background, I was born and raised in the south. Biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, chicken and waffles, cornbread, grits, banana pudding and/or Jello "salads" made their appearance at just about every get together. It's a cuisine I know and love. Jacob's Pickle serves good to decent versions of these southern standards. The fried chicken, which seems to make a showing in half the dishes on the menu, is thickly breaded, well brined, and tender. It's not far short of what one would find at Charles Pan Fried Chicken, a place I find standard-setting for fried chicken in NYC. Too often, though, the chicken isn't really allowed to take center stage, but is drowned in hot honey butter or gravy. Don't get me wrong: chicken with gravy is a wondrous thing. But if you're going to go to the trouble of frying that thickly breaded chicken fresh, do it the justice of leaving it crisp. In my world, chicken with gravy is for church picnics, large format brunches, and other get togethers where the chicken has to be pre-fried and left to sit for a l'il while. Everything is more oily than it has to be, which believe it or not is not always a hallmark of southern cooking. Case in point: grits. I swoon over grits when they're made well. JP's are very smooth (not stone ground, which I admit is my preference), made with a lot of butter and possibly another fat that isn't butter, as well. There's a touch of cheese. But oily as it is, there's something flat, something lacking in umami, about the preparation that I can't quite put a finger on. Favorite versions from home include heavy cream, sometimes black pepper, and sometimes broth. The mouthfeel of JP's grits is somehow more oily, but less rich, than those. While baja salmon, a new-to-me menu item, was well seasoned, moist, and fresh, it was also excessively oleaginous. The dish almost seemed to have been finished with butter and oil just as some Indian dishes are finished with a tadka or some Sichuan dishes with chili oil, which... didn't really work, here. The spinach underneath the salmon was unpleasantly hypersaturated with oil. Quick rundown of some other menu items: - The turkey leg is fall-off-the-bone tender, served with consistently undersalted mashed potatoes, stuffing, and a wee bit of cranberry sauce. I don't think it's a menu strength, but my convives sometimes order it as a slightly healthier option. - Biscuits are good enough that I wouldn't feel embarrassed about feeding these to a southerner. - Salads are large and well composed. - Cocktails, including the Bloody BLT at our most recent meal, are well made and by NYC's ridiculous standards, well priced. The beer list is both well curated are well priced. - Pickles are legitimately great. They're fun to eat and I think made in house, perfectly acidic, briny and in some cases spicy. I recently brought a selection of these for a pickle-loving buddy in Maine. Portion sizes are, as others have noted, large by NYC standards, but fairly normal by southern standards. If it's too much food, just bring a box or ask for one for leftovers. We didn't love some of the wait staff we encountered at our most recent meal. (Some seemed unfriendly and exasperated at a baseline level.) But the staffing pool is enormous and we've had lovely hostesses and servers in the past, so perhaps we just drew a short straw this time. It's a wonderful space. There are enough good things going for Jacob's Pickles -- not least its proximity to home -- that I'm sure we'll be back. read more

Met some ladies here for a late lunch on a Friday. Our server was super cute and informative. I ordered the BBQ Smothered Pepper Jack Chicken. The chicken was crisp and good. I didn't care for the biscuit on the plate (it was dry) or the cheese grits (they were cold). We had a dessert that was very large but not so great. You know I usually love my dessert. (How did I not see they had lemon roast chicken?!) B ordered mac & cheese. The top was nice and crisp but the overload of cheese was too much. My daughter went with a hot chicken biscuit, which I'd designate 3.75 stars. (S thought I was overly critical.) I had a sloppy burger called Duke Double Smash. I liked the sauteed mushrooms and onions, but frankly I would've been happier with a Burger King Whopper. My friend ordered four pickled vegetables for the table. Hardly any were eaten, though they weren't bad. And then .... the three of us shared bread pudding. I love a good bread pudding. This was mushy, made better with ice cream. So there you have it. If you like this kind of food, you'll love Jacob's Pickles. The restaurant can accommodate a lot of people. When we were there, it was packed. Really noisy, too. I come back to Jacob's Pickles again an again and there are many reasons why. The first: the staff has been incredible every time: so kind, attentive, and welcoming, despite the fact that it's a pretty big restaurant and has been decently busy every time I'm there. Secondly, it's beautiful. I love the classy, modern, warm aesthetic of both the inside and outside dining spaces. Third, the FOOD (duh). The portions here are huge so you're almost always getting two meals in one. This time, we ordered some fried pickles (a classic-$15) with some sriracha mayo (yumm). Wow this place was delicious. I had been meaning to try this place for a while and I can see why it is so popular. Firstly, our server started off by letting us know that the portions were big but the were so much bigger than I imagined (definitely not a complaint!) All the food was great! The deviled eggs were delicious, I enjoyed all of the different types of pickles which all had different flavors and were nice and crunchy. The Special Biscuit French Toast was Oreo and very light and not too sweet so the maple syrup was able to take it to another level. The Hot Honey Chicken & Toast had a nice light spice to it so it was very easy to eat. It also went great with the pickle sampler that we started off with. Jacob pickles kles has always been a great place in the UWS, vibes and music was always on point. Love the fried chicken and biscuits from here. Their fried pickles were delicious. The spinach and artichoke dip was not up to par this time I went, the spinach tasted a bit old and can definitely tell it was frozen or left in the fridge too long. Unfortunately, this time zi did get food poisoning, I do not think it was from the dip but maybe from unclean glassware as there was a funky taste to my cup and water. Was spending a day with my two girlfriends, when they decided on eating at Jacob's Pickles. They ate there already, and I am surprised I never have since my dad lives only three blocks away from it. I suggested making a reservation, and good thing we did. The place was crowded for a 3pm on a Saturday. We were sat at a table near the windows on the little extension part of the restaurant. I liked that the tables were spaced out, not on top of one another like in other places. The space was really elegantly decorated. We ordered the Fried Pickles ($15) for the table. I ordered a Jam Jar Cocktail ($15) and the Duke Burger ($26). My friends ordered the Original Chicken Sandwich ($22), and Buffalo Mac&Cheese ($23). The food was amazing... like really really amazing. The new location is so spacious and the food came out lightning FAST! Seriously within -0 minutes of ordering and it was a little busy on a Sunday. I came here for a weekday lunch moment and it was my first time at the new location. I loved the vibes and how big it is! The seating setup is a huge step-up from the previous location. I think it will be much easier to get reservations and the tables aren't as close together. The service was super fast and efficient! They don't have espresso based drinks which is a little strange, but I enjoyed the iced coffee. We shared the fried pickles, which were incredible! I loved the spicy mayo and the coating on the pickles was amazing. For my meal, I went with one of my favs- the honey chicken and pickles biscuit. I unfortunately was underwhelmed. I truly have never had a bad meal here. My friend is in town from LA and this was where he wanted to go. He is pescatarian so while the options for him are not endless he was able to eat the endive nachos which I recommended to him after having them on my last visit. Our server was a ball of energy but not overly hyper. Perfect balance of excited and helpful. My other friend and I split the turkey leg, spinach artichoke dip, and asparagus. We are long-time Jacob's Pickles customers but I'm finally getting around to their review. JP is extremely consistent quality, large portions, good service, and good flavors. Their new location is gigantic and not as homey as their last spot, but it's starting to grow on me. I think I've had virtually everything on their menu at this point and there has been nothing that was a full swing and a miss, although some things (Buffalo Mac, the burger, smothered chicken) just hit better than others. My one complaint about the new location is that they no longer seem to serve their pickles in the jars?! The portion sizes on the pickles also seems a bit smaller. Have you been to their new location on 93rd and Columbus Avenue? Its fancy! Bringing a very different vibe. My first thought when I arrived in this new space was I would hold a wedding here -- like an important 100k wedding here complete with Vera Wang gown. The new space is like 5 time the size of the old spot, which held a very communal vibe with the imagined Southern Charm and the too close for comfort seating. This is not that. Congratulations on the come up! I can see a lot of neighborhood folks liking this new vibe. I looked around and saw big heaping plates of food on everyone's table. And I became confused as to why one man had three pieces of French toast in front of him, one slice on each plate. Well my curiosity was peaked when I ordered the Honey Maple Chicken and Toast with the maple syrup on the side. *See Pic* My plate came with less chicken than I would get at the old location, but three huge Challah slices of French Toast. My mountain fell apart shortly after snapping the pic, falling like someone yelled "Timber!!". My friend ordered the Hot Chicken with Pickles. Well, here what was surprising. I don't think we waited two minutes for our food before the server showed up with our plates. Shocking! Despite this beautiful presentation, both of our dishes arrived room temperature and the chicken was heavily battered. I was surprised to realized the inside of my toast was soggy while the outside was crisp. I ate half the chicken before giving up and half a French Toast before packing it to go. It now lives in my fridge, where I hope my much younger son will eat it and enjoy. I was sad for this experience because I have a five star review for their old location but this was a huge departure from our old experience there. Tried their new location and did a daring walk-in on a Saturday for brunch. After waiting for 20 minutes, we got seated on one of their high tables which were comfortable for our little one too. James was our server, very attentive and friendly and was quick to take our order of Matzo Ball Soup, Hot Chicken Biscuit, and Deviled Eggs. Rating the new location and updated menu. The space feels like a huge upgrade from the previous space. Not sure if the space is actually bigger than the previous one but it seems like it, and all of the mirrors on the inside definitely makes it feel larger. The menu has some new additions that I don't remember from my previous visits. We really enjoyed the Spinach Artichoke dip appetizer as a group and it was a generous servings, although that is to be expected at Jacob's Pickles. I tried the burger and while the taste was enjoyable the eating process was not. The brioche bun was not up to the task of containing the burger and toppings so it ended up being a fork and knife affair. Our waiter was lovely but did disappear for a large part of our meal, when we were trying to get a second round of drinks. Big bustling restaurant on the Upper west side with a huge menu of southern food and drinks. It took us so long to decide our poor waitress had to come back 3 times to take our order. Overall we all really enjoyed the spicy savory crunchy food we got. Some things were a miss though. Jalapeño poppers were great. We're so used to frozen, refried ones at other places, this was a good departure. They were more roasted with spicy melty cheese on top and not spicy. Fried pickles were spears, battered and fried. Great crunch but tasted more batter than the tang of the pickle. Hot Chicken n biscuits was the best item. Served with creamy grits and a huge biscuit. Just get it but it is spicy. Buffalo Mac n cheese was good even though penne shaped pasta didn't feel very southern. Plus needed more flavor with buffalo sauce. Chicken Caesar wrap was disappointing even though it's a generous size. It seemed like they took crispy scraps of chicken from other things for the wrap. I would've liked to see bigger pieces of the chicken. The crisp lettuce and sauce were good tho. There was an unspoken peer pressure when we saw pink cocktails with fresh strawberries on so many tables. So happy we gave in to get the refreshing jam jar cocktail. Great food and great service! At first we were nervous our reservation didn't go through because historically they didn't take reservations for two, but there were no issues at all and we were seated right away. Everything we ordered was delicious, and the staff made the whole experience even better. We got the fried green tomatoes to start and the honey chicken and pickles and classic mac and cheese to share. The portion sizes were huge and our only regret was not pacing ourselves to save room for dessert - a seasonal pumpkin biscuit bread pudding. I guess we'll have to come back! Jacob's Pickles has been a favorite spot of mine for over a decade. On my most recent visit here, I was happy to find the place packed as ever, but even happier to find that they had a table available right away despite most of them being taken. It's a casual spot with a large bar inside, plenty of outdoor tables and a fairly large indoor dining room as well. It's slightly elevated southern comfort food served in enormous portions. I was here for one thing and one thing only during my last visit -- the mac and cheese. I've had most things on this menu and love the fried pickles, deviled eggs and chicken and waffles -- but the mac and cheese here just does something for me. Served in a cast iron skillet, made with penne pasta and so many different types of cheese. Gooey on the inside, topped off with a hefty layer of cheese on top. Everything a mac and cheese should be and nothing that it shouldn't. If you're visiting, don't leave New York without eating here. read more

Should have done this ages ago. Jacob's is a great atmosphere, casual and foodie all the way. The staff is also always friendly and knowledgeable. Just going to write about tonight...had Spicy Brine Margarita...it is amazing and must be tried. Like its pickle shot infused.... Deviled Eggs- thinks its paprika in the mix that give it flavor but the pickle makes it perfect., highly recommend. Okra - vinegary, smoky...cast iron burnt...not slimey, but also not crispy...highly recommend. Salmon Burger (a special for the summer) - excellent, light for this place...highly recommend Hot Chicken Biscuit - pretty good not in love with their hot sauce, and I might've thrown some lettuce, tomato and onion on that suck Maple Chicken and Challah French Toast - just what you expect... sweet. Jacob's Pickles was a spot recommended by one of my boyfriend's friends who lives in New York. If you are in search of southern comfort food classics, this is a must stop while you are in the Upper West Side. The portions are HUGE here. I honestly don't remember what we ordered, but we did take the suggestions our waitress gave us! My boyfriend ordered something savory, while I got something sweet. The best of both worlds for us. The restaurant is bigger than it appears when you first enter. It's a rustic, homey decor and lighting. Out of nowhere while we were dining, the lights actually went out.
