I've been here about a half dozen times at least. I like the indoor and outdoor seating and it has a lively atmosphere which is fun. The food is consistently underwhelming and rarely seasoned. I also think both the food and drinks are overpriced, save for happy hour. I would stop in if you were in the area and wanted a good vibe and strong drinks (pina colada was tasty!). The bartender was attentive. I would not recommend for a meal. read more

I really wanted to love this place. It has a great layout, plenty of TVs, and a nice outdoor seating area. The staff is friendly, but the service is slow. So why only 2 stars? The first time I came here about a year ago, I found a piece of plastic in my food. The server was very apologetic and comped the meal, so I decided to give the restaurant another chance. Fast forward a year, and unfortunately lightning struck twice. I ordered the fish tacos, and while they looked amazing and arrived warm, the fish inside was raw. I let the server know, and once again he apologized and removed the dish from the bill. Two food safety issues in two visits is enough for me. I won't be waiting around for strike three. NYT 2/18/26 blurb re: Cavaleras Social opening UES, Florence Fabricant recommended the enchiladas suizas. I called their UWS Amsterdam location to inquire if their suizes same as UES, answered yes, so up I went. unsmiling waitress behind the bar for some reason had an "attitude", odd because I was the only person in the restaurant. ordered the suizes with chicken, and decided to also order the guacamole & chips, just to compare v. other Mexican places. Well, upon tasting the suizes, a C- at best. the guac also "average", not worth a detour. adding" insult to injury", asked for small container of salsa verde, which she provided. but, as leaving, also asked for small container of salsa roja to which I also like to compare v.other salsas I've had. I was told it would be extra, and that she had thrown in the salsa verde "gratis" - 2oz "gratis" - give me a break??? I have been to many Mexican restaurants, I have NEVER been denied either when ask, always been accommodated - simply good customer relations and KIM: we're talking about 2oz, nothing more. I just don't get it. So, a waitress makes a decision to tell a potential customer, she would not throw in 2oz of salsa Rojas - totally alienating. Obviously will never return - just moronic! I have been here several times for the happy hour specials but had not experienced Taco Tuesday. Wonderful food and service and a great bang for your buck. You can have 3 tacos of your choice and 1 margarita for $20. I went with a coworker and she ordered 3 appetizers which they carefully arranged for her eating enjoyment. I ordered the 3 tacos and margarita and was delighted. They had music in the background that was appropriate for a Mexican restaurant during happy hour and dinner service. Upbeat and not overbearing. Absolutely loved the carnitas, served with yummy pickled onions, beans and rice cooked perfectly. My friend got the steak fajita quesadilla and liked it also. The meat is high quality. Highly recommend coming before 4pm for the lunch special. Drinks 5/5 - we got the hibiscus margarita with jalapeño bitters added, the tamarind margarita (sweet and spicy) both were great. We also got the cucumber habanero margarita and we're not a fan but if you like cucumber it might be for you. To me it tastes like a spa treatment. Dined here on Saturday afternoon and was able to secure outdoor seating. There is an everyday happy hour deal from 12pm-7pm that includes $10 margaritas $5 beers and $10 sangrias with a wide variety of options to choose from! We ordered the hibiscus and cucumber habanero margarita and both were delicious. The cucumber was refreshing which complimented the spiciness from the peppers and the hibiscus was tart and just right. For appetizers we ordered the queso with chorizo. The tortillas were warm and the queso was gooey and filling. For tacos we ordered the fish tacos which were beer battered and super light as well as the steak tacos which were generously filled. Wish the tortillas were doubled up but they were all filled to the brim. Service was also friendly Angel was great and super helpful!. Overall I would definitely stop by to take advantage of the great deals. read more

It's great for watching a sports game (especially soccer), but personally, I think the food is rather mediocre. Bar food, of course, but for what it is, there's about a $2-3 markup on it. Fries took about 10-15 minutes to arrive after ordering on a non-crowded evening, and they weren't very tasty at all. Just FYI, not that I'd go back, but they're connected to another restaurant, so follow Google Maps/Yelp, and you're in the right place, despite the signage. read more

Not sure if it was just a one-time experience but I don't think my friends and I will be giving this place a second chance. It was not very crowded when we sat down but it was loud with some Spanish music or reggaeton type stuff playing on the speakers. We had to flag down a waitress. She was nice, took our orders, and brought us some underwhelming chips to tide us over. I ordered the chicken fajitas which were good but not really anything special. The rice was dry, and the beans did not have the taste I'm used to at a Mexican restaurant like this. Have been to a couple other spots in the area my friends and I agreed that we rate Calaveras pretty low of the list. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it and will be hard pressed to try here again. read more

This place was formally the Ellington, but I'm a fan of what it is today! Drinks - We ordered the creamy mango and cucumber & habanero margaritas and they were tasty and will definitely try the other ones next time Food - Ordered guacamole traditional, al pastor and de pescado tacos and they were amazing! The ceviche mixto was also great and refreshing. Excellent spot! Came here for a late lunch while wandering around the area with my partner. We ordered the three tapa special - spicy Thai wings, chicken quesadilla and the chorizo on naan. All delicious but our favorite was definitely the quesadilla, the chicken was incredibly fresh and good quality. We like the Columbus location so tried this one for pick-up last night. Really tasty tapas with good portions, just a little on the pricey side. I especially loved the Brussels sprouts, but wings and chorizo naan were a big hit. The music isn't too loud and there are TVs for those who like news or sports. Some nights they have karaoke. We asked to have a burrito remade without some menu ingredients and it was no problem. I'm a big fan of Calaveras Corner's lunch special and happy hour prices, though, the skinny margarita could use less much simple syrup. Lunch is perfect (even with the slight price increase). One walks away full but not bloated. The dinner menu is the same as the lunch menu. Dinner is a bit pricey but portions are more than double those of lunch. I don't think the chicken is good enough to pay $27 for a burrito. The service is fine. The lunch atmosphere is excellent. It's quiet but not too quiet. If it's really busy, it's still quiet. The night atmosphere is like a club. I think they even have a silver disco ball and a strobe light. All and all, it's one of my favorite neighborhood lunch spots. And you can't go wrong with the enchiladas suizas. read more

This roasted chicken quesadilla was out of this world. Now when they say quesadilla we ain't talkin yo quiero Taco Bell. We talking legit ass shit. The chicken was like wtf good, then they found some bomb ass mushroom and slammed them in with it, then said let's melt a shit ton of cheese between that. Flavortown done right!!! Now we also had some good happy hours $5/$7 drinks. A year ago I wouldn't had thought I'd say this but I'd happily get corona for that price. Our server, not sure his name but dude was tallish and dope as hell. Great service and only knocking the star off cause I can't do half stars. We order chips and salsa and the order wasn't put in. Calaveras corner was a delightful experience, I came by with my friends and were happy to see the steps they've taken to provide a safe dining experience amidst our pandemic. Staff were friendly , knowledgable and ready with suggestions from the menu. I tried the veggie empanadas (amazing) , the portobello mushrooms (fantastic) and the tiramisu which was a beautiful way to cap the night. New spot on UWS, located where The Ellington used to be. Good setup for both indoor and outdoor distanced dining. They also did a good job of checking everyone's temperatures as they were seated. I can tell they are still working on tightening up their operations, and working on their liquor license (only beer & wine for now). Overall, the service was friendly and the food was tasty. I had the All American Calaveras burger which was a good sized portion and came out quickly. I'll give them a month or so to smooth out their operations before I return. read more

They added a breakfast menu in collaboration with Demitasse Coffee. Breakfast at Calaveras is now open 8 am seven days a week. Columbian coffee is delicious, and they also have a diverse coffee and tea menu (I like London Fog with coconut milk). The Huevos Llaneros breakfast is super healthy, adding a generous does of kale to your eggs. The arepas and yuca are delicious too! read more

I came here a couple of weeks ago right after it opened and I am impressed with what I am seeing! It is so great to have a (much better!) replacement to the former Ellington. The food here is quite good and there is something on the menu for every palate. I had a couple of the tapas (empanadas, tacos) and each was very tasty. This is also a very vegetarian friendly place which I appreciate. At the time of my visit, I did not realize that this restaurant is affiliated with a Mexican restaurant on Columbus off of 106th street which I visited this weekend which is ALSO very good!
