Between jiving to House classics and having the munchies, Dive was what we needed after a Circle Line House Party docking close to midnight that Sunday before Labor Day. Since many of my 'Late Night Food' Yelp searches turned out to be blanks, Dive's 4am hours sounded really nice. Turns out, hours weren't updated and they close at 2am instead. Still, the 2am closing worked for us perfectly because the West Side Hwy was smooth sailing at midnight and we got here in no time. I can definitely see 106 as having a 'woo-hoo' crowd and one I would avoid. But in our case and the time we came in, it was fine. Forget about what you know about a 'dive bar': bad service and equally bad food. Not here. Our late night- or rather wee-in-the-morning meal was affordable at this UWS watering hole with unpretentious service from Wally at the bar in a funky lived-in feel playing Bohemian-Funk music mixed with 80s British Pop. Not that I'm allergic to mayo- but I ONLY eat mayo with Dominican potato salad because it only calls for a small amounts. So when I told Wally to leave out the Wasabi aioli in my ahi Tuna Sandwich, his lightbulb went off and came over to tell me that there's also mayo in the coleslaw. Thank you for looking out, dude. Live jazz outside on Sunday afternoons (3-6pm)! I know Dive 75, but didn't know there were others in this local chain until I walked by - glad to have one in Harlem. The fried pickles were great! The frozen margarita was okay, nothing special. There a few different ciders on tap but none are particularly dry. Plenty of craft beers on tap, most $8 or $9 per pint. I'm a regular, as in my party (of usually 6) goes to trivia every single week. Usually it's a good and undramatic time, but today I had an experience that left a really sour taste in my mouth. We came to join our party and wanted to grab a chair. In the past, staff has been really annoyed when we've asked for chairs so we grabbed one ourselves from the bar. At this point the bartender, Will S., comes out from behind the bar, literally yanks the chair from my partner's hands as if he is a toddler and is screaming "No no no!" Granted there is no sign anywhere that we can't move chairs, it's been done tons of times in the past, and we would have very happily cooperated even if he told us bluntly. But this was another level, Will freaked out as if we'd tried to kidnap his child. Then he saw that there was two bites of pizza left on our table and said you need to get out NOW cause that's outside food (my partner was finishing up the last bites of pizza). And stood there until we left. Again, it was literally two bites and we would have been super cooperative, but he didn't even give us a chance to respond. I understand that eating establishments have rules but I've never had anyone, let alone at a dive bar, be as rude as Will about communicating them. It's not like we were moving all of the bar chairs to our table or bringing tons of outside food to the bar (and also, I see other people bringing little things here and there all the time ) our party that we were joining had already ordered ample amount of food and drink, and we actually were about to order more from them when we were kicked out. Anyway I'm leaving one more star because there are other employees who are really nice (like Lincoln) but if your bartender (and may I remind, bartending is a client-facing HOSPITALITY role) is going to be a complete asshole to a customer who makes an honest mistake, you have a long term liability. read more

While I'm more of a fan of Dive on 96th street, 106 has been more my speed lately. Inadvertently, all roads lead to the same place as both bars have the same owner. On our last visit here, Leo was the lucky guy chosen to be our server extraordinaire. Leo was friendly, funny and most importantly efficiently fast at getting our drinks and food out in record time. It's no secret that I like a good dive bar and Dive 106 falls in that category. Come alone or with a few friends and have just the type of experience that you want. No one bothers you here and the food is your standard bar fare. The prices are reasonable, if memory serves me correctly. People are friendly-- at least when sitting at the bar was still a thing. They earned an extra star from me for offering mezcal, a variety of tequila options, lots of beers and a specialty cocktail called "WAP" (featuring mezcal!). No jukebox, but a good mix of music. Bathrooms are small but it's standard for a dive bar in and out. Nice, casual spot for this area of the neighborhood. read more

This place saved the day after our unpleasant experience literally across the street, and on my birthday celebration with friends. I normally would have looked up reviews of a place first before deciding but we really needed to just go somewhere else. Imagine our surprise when we were welcomed right away and attended to immediately, despite the place being busy. Thank you, Max! :) Upon settling in, we all agreed that we like the place, so out of curiosity, I looked up their reviews, and wow, 5-stars all the way! Living up to people's reviews it seems! Overall, we really loved the vibe of the place and the staff, it just makes you want to stay and enjoy the rest of the night. Fast forward to almost 4 hours later, you can imagine how many more round of drinks we've had, plus we enjoyed their nachos with grilled chicken and yummy fries! The music was great and as the rest of the evening went on, the place became even more packed! Service and staff didn't slow down and we were attended to from start to finish. I've been here twice- once to check out the place and then a second time for a beer club meetup-- and both times were great. French fries are really good! The most recent time I had a patty melt which was amazing (and filling) and it was much better than the brisket sliders I had on the previous visit. Beers are always great. Just about any style you want, you can find. Many from local brewers. The staff is great also. Both times I've had great service and it was because they were so nice that we arranged the meetup there. At the meetup, Howie was definitely the man. This location is less cramped than the others with a bit less cool shit, however there's still a fish tank and they have a bit of outdoor seating. Service is also quirky and wonderful as usual. Tap list is almost as stellar as the other places, with Hill Farmstead, Hudson Valley and other beer geek breweries regularly represented. Beer bottles are weak in comparison to their other places, but hopefully this will change over time. Huge fan. Have visited a good few times to drink, as one does in a dive. THEN, I went in Sunday around 3 pm (nursing a gnarly hangover) and FELL IN LOVE with their fries. Like we're getting married. Thin, plenty of salt and pepper, crispy, just greasy enough. I didn't even want ketchup or mayo!? Only one very kind but clearly frazzled employee was staffing the place when I came in (to nurse my gnarly hangover). I sat outside and was told he'd come out to serve me, but I ended up going in to ask for anything I needed. Told him about my (gnarrrrly) hangover and he suggested The Patty Melt. I'd give this 3 stars. The sliced bread was very thick and buttered, but toasted too hard so it was a lot on the teeth and super dense. Sauce on both sides made the sando easy to break in half and plenty moist. The patty was VERY juicy - cooked med-rare by default, which I always want. But the flavors were heavvyyyy and the patty was a little dark (flavor-wise). Surprised to say I'd have liked some lettuce and tomato to cut the richness. It was too much, but certainly satisfying. I won't stop going any time soon. Food, drink, FRENCH FRIES, vibe, and location are what I need. Hangover or not. Absolutely my new normal. read more

This is a usual spot for me. I went to trivia tonight and was barely served for the three hours I was here. When we asked for the check -- knowing it would be split among 5 people -- I received unnecessary attitude from the guy bringing the check. There was another server, a female, hustling the entire time covering inside and outside. Unfortunately she was not responsible for our table. I've been here so many times with more than 4 people, but today, it's a policy for this establishment to not split the check up for 5 people who couldn't even order as many items as they wanted to. Are you kidding? "Well, that's what most restaurants do, if it's more than 4 people," with an attitude, walking away. Why would you risk losing regular customers? Finally, the veggie fake chicken sandwich, our go-to, was unexpectedly lackluster. The sandwich wasn't hot enough to even melt the cheese on the sandwich. Don't expect great service, good service, or service in general when there are only two servers for the entire place. Dive 106 has a great beer list, a crap ton of TVs that somehow had interesting things on at 3:30 AM, a great jukebox situation that we probably overused, and super friendly staff. Also, you know, the whole graveyard shift thing on a Saturday night. Considering how smashed and loud my group was, I'm grateful these guys put up with us, providing much needed alcoholic coffee drinks (gotta be sharp at 4AM), and additional beers to take the edge off of said coffee drinks. A classic dive bar - the neighborhood watering hole where everybody goes at the end of the day. It's Cheers, It's the Regal Beagle, it's Moe's Tavern; It's not stuffy or hipster - it's familiar and comfortable and it's the place you want for an excellent beer selection, really good bar food and a great time. That is what Dive 106 is all about. To start, the beer selection here is amazing. They have over twenty-five beers on tap, everything from Stella, and Guiness, to Zero Gravity Green State Lager and Pipeworks Glaucus Belgium IPA. In addition, they have good canned options, like Shiner Bock. Wine and cocktails are also available, and the food menu is pretty extensive, with lot's of interesting offerings: Kimchi Turkey Sliders, Sea Scallop Sliders, Giant Pretzel Muffaletta and a Pate & Cornichon Sandwich, to name a few. Of course you can also get the 'standards', like Buffalo Wings, Charcuterie Platters, Swordfish Tacos and a variety of burgers. I personally recommend Billy D's famous bacon onion dip, as well their, Greatest Patty Melt Ever sandwich. Both are amazing and really hit the spot. This location has been a bar since the early 1900's, but the newly designed Dive 106 combines the best of the old-school charm with a modern neighborhood vibe. I love the classic red nickel ceiling tile and 'antique' chandeliers. Combined with the tv monitors, large fish tank and diver decor, Dive 106 offers an air of coziness and intimacy which makes one want to stay awhile. The service here is very friendly, and Howie makes everyone feel welcome and appreciated. It's clear that the owners and staff understand - 'It's all for sh*t if the service sucks'. What an excellent service - and food has never been better! Been coming here for few years on and off and honestly every single item on the menu blew my mind! Student, professor or not, if you live anywhere near Columbia University, you really need to head to Dive 106 (located on Amsterdam Ave. at 106th St.) for a great selection of beers on tap, cocktails, and wholesome and fresh pub food. They also have a very nice Happy Hour and the bartenders are welcoming and cordial!! This is Not your typical dive bar, though. It is actually a vebeautiful space. The beautiful and decorative tin ceiling is the original ceiling from many many years ago. Rumor has it, the place has been a bar since 1949. The owners of the bar today, restored the ceiling back to its original splendor. And it really makes an impression!
