Ordered the Chicken Pot Pie (crust was very nice) and the Pot Roast (meat was tender and the flavors well complemented by the carrots and potatoes). I had to stop here for lunch since my name is John and I'm old. 61, so not that old, but old enough. The place was very busy on Friday around 12:15 PM. I waited about 15 minutes for a table and was then seated near the door to the bathrooms (and kitchen, I presume). The food and service were great. My only bit of constructive criticism would be for the servers to try to be a little quieter when bussing tables. The spot where they dumped all of the dirty dishes after clearing a table was only a few feet from where I was sitting, and it was terribly loud and distracting. I ate so fast that my server even commented on how quickly I finished. I just wanted to get out of there because the crashing of plates and silverware was really getting to me. The place was packed, the hostess said it will be about 45 minute wait since we didn't have reservations. There is no place to wait inside and it was raining outside. This is a review for breakfast experience on a weekday morning recently. On the positive side, I love an old-school diner place like this. The ambience is great. It's cute, clean and fun. There was fun music playing while I was there, but not too loud (thank you!). The server was friendly and on it. All of that was much appreciated. I ordered the basic buttermilk pancakes -- the most basic thing a diner can serve for breakfast. And I'm not super picky. But these pancakes were very dry and had no taste. Just so dry and bland. It was like eating a crumbly dry muffin with no flavor. I had butter and syrup, and the butter had no flavor either. I even tasted it separately just to make sure I wasn't crazy, because butter usually improves everything. But the butter I was given was some sort of fake vegetable oil-based "butter" product that had no flavor. These pancakes were very disappointing. The one thing a diner needs to make well is pancakes. My suggestion is to get a better more tasty and moist recipe and use real butter. I was happy that they served legit fresh squeezed orange juice, though. But the pancakes were enough to keep me away. I really enjoyed Old John's Diner. It was recommended by an acquaintance of mine who raved about it. We walked in early on a Saturday morning and had no issues getting seated, but I have walked by this place before and seen a long line. It's one of the few places I've visited in NYC that truly reproduces old school diner vibes. The seats are a little cramped, but this does add to the aesthetic. The food was delicious - we tried the bagel + gravlax, corned beef hash, and stuffed french toast. The corned beef hash was my favorite, but the french toast was also excellent and was not-too-sweet. I felt like the prices were a little steep for the amount of food we got (which is usually not the case with these types of diners), but that didn't come as a huge surprise given the area we're in. The Mozzarella were a bit bland and only came four to an order which seems smaller than most places. The burger was pretty good - a but undercooked but I ate it fine enough. OMG the food here is great. I ordered the roast chicken. It was perfection. Crispy skin, great seasoning, obviously cooked "under a brick" and the sauce was absolutely delicious, singing with vegetables. My son got the salmon and said it was fabulous with a wonderful sauce. What other diner takes this kind of care with their sauces? Writing home about this one (wait I am home!). I have only lived in NY several weeks and this is the fourth diner I've been to. I was seeing a show with a friend at Lincoln Center, so we needed a spot for an early dinner. I made a reservation for 5:45pm and we were seated upon arrival. We ordered lemonades and sandwiches, but they both took forever to arrive at the table. The sandwiches came, and then the lemonades still never came. They eventually did take off one of them from our bill, but I have no idea why all of this took so long. I had the Turkey Club and it was so salty. Lemonade was good though. One of the NYFF staffers reminded me about OJD, which I've been meaning to check out. The place was quite busy at dinner time. People even had reservations, which I wasn't expecting at a diner. I was able to get a seat at the bar and then move to a small, more comfortable table when that opened up. The staff was very friendly and that's the one thing I can praise from my experience. I waited at least 15 minutes for a tuna melt, with people who sat down at the bar after I'd ordered, getting their food before me. This was a really small sandwich for $15, with not even two pickle slices. The diner on 70th Street makes a much more substantial tuna melt. It took me all of about five minutes to eat it, which makes the wait even more annoying. Not serving it with fries also struck me as obnoxious. The sandwich really had no flavour at all. I came here for a late breakfast/early brunch based on the diner's stellar reviews online. Unfortunately, the service was AWFUL. 1) My server and her assistants kept rushing me to finish my meal. A) The busboys kept coming to my table asking to clear my plates of food, though I kept telling them I was not finished and still working on them. B) Then the server herself p/a kept coming by for bill payment, yet insisting "take your time." She then clears my napkin from the table WHILE I CONTINUE TO EAT MY FOOD. Moments before this, she mentioned that she "need/ to prepare for lunch rush"--tho there are empty tables throughout the diner (see pic). She never offered to refill my coffee, yet she maintained such attentiveness to the (white) patrons to my left whose bill she took care of only after they signaled their readiness to pay it. After I paid my bill, there suddenly was no rush to clear my empty plates from the table. This server also proceeded to spend an additional five minutes chatting up the patrons to my left as they settled their tab. When they left, and I was the sole patron on my wing of the diner, the server turns to her busboy and says to him in Spanish: "{Dear god, why wont this man leave already?"} She was wrong to presume I didn't speak the language, and even more rude to speak about a customer in such a manner. BOTTOMLINE: FIND ANOTHER DINER IN THE NABE TO PATRONIZE. Rest assured, there are plenty others in the vicinity that will treat its customers more equitably. read more

Friendly waitstaff... that disappeared (getting that third cup of coffee was nearly impossible... and don't even start with me about my caffeine intake). Food could have been good, but my omelet was cold (and poorly prepared at that -- asparagus goat cheese omelette and the thick asparagus was basically cut in half with the logs laid in the cheese), home-fries were cold.. and did I mention I couldn't find a waiter to get a refill on my coffee? Stopped in late afternoon because we had a dinner reservation nearby and needed to wait about 40 minutes. What's nice surprise! Very 1960-ish inside and unassuming from the outside. Bar was available with seats to dine if you wish ( also dining outside was available ). We sat at the bar and was waited on promptly- I had a homemade mint lemonade ( made on the spot with fresh mint and to my specified level of sweetness) & husband had black/white milkshake. A perfect 3.5, I was excited to visit this restaurant after seeing a video of it on YouTube and seeing all the amazing food this restaurant has to offer. The portions are decent for a diner, but are pretty pricey. The fish and chips are tasty and it comes with more than enough "chips", but I would like them to come with a bit more than just vinegar and tartar sauce. Ketchup does not work on me. The chocolate shake is an $8 ripoff. Hand spun and fresh, it is super small. Four sips in and I was finished. I feel cheated that I ordered this. One thing I heard is how amazing the pancakes are here, as they make a recipe for them distinctive to this restaurant. I almost ordered these as a second option, but figured to let it go and wait to have them for another visit.
