Walking uptown at dinnertime, I offered my husband two options for an al fresco meal. I knew he'd pick Green Kitchen. While my choice would've been the Chinese place across the street, Green Kitchen was a-okay with me. Bottled wine was 50% off, which may (or may not) be standard on Wednesdays. The cab we chose was fine at $30 .... but no way would it warrant a $60 tab. I wanted a gyro sandwich and side salad. Our waitress suggested the platter, which comes to about the same price and includes fries. Perfect! My husband was really happy with his generously-stuffed Reuben. I didn't think the cheese was adequately melted, but he disagreed. We both tacked on a cup of avgolemono. After hot & sour, Greek lemon may be my most favorite soup. Green Kitchen is a NY institution and a reliably good place to get breakfast, lunch or dinner. I like this location better than 75th Street though the menus I believe are identical. Got the short rib eggs benedict which was super super delish. The meat especially was so freaking good and soft. The potatoes were really weird I can't tell if I liked them or not they were like kinda hashbrown but also diced but also just a solid mass idk. Loved the slice of orange though. Also tried their Vanilla Hot Cocoa with Vodka and man was that strong I could barely taste the hot cocoa because I was getting blasted off of half of this drink omg. Had a reservation for this location at 4pm. I arrived at 345pm and used the restroom prior to my bestie arriving. The restroom has 2 stalls that are private which is great since it's a unisex restroom. I sat at my table which was a booth and the waiter asked if i wanted anything to start. I got mozz sticks and a coke. My bestie came and the mozz sticke and coke arrived. We decided to order pasta & the chicken Caesar salad and split it. The waiter brought us extra plates and refilled my soda. Food was very hot and fresh. Waiter was nice and attentive without being overbearing. We packed some food to go and i had a cheesecake for dessert while my bestie had a coffee. Everything came out to $103. All in all worth the price. Food and service was great. The best thing on the table was the bacon. I'm giving it a 1 because the ambience is great and it's a cute diner vibe. Service was fine but I personally don't like when restaurants have rotating servers, it makes the experience impersonal. The house potatoes are not normal breakfast potatoes they are mashed up potatoes with tons of other veggies which was not advertised. My omelette was not salted at all and the mushrooms were not cooked. The rye bread is straight card board tasting. The wheat bread with jam was good probably just because of the jam. The staff was nice enough and the buser was working really hard. For me, it missed the mark on a few fronts. The appetizers were served and we hadn't even received water. We finished the appetizer (very good btw!) and then our cocktails arrived- the order needs some work. Unfortunately, the server spilled a colorful cocktail on my friend's brand new shirt she just purchased that was sitting in a bag next to the table. She was kind to help try to remove with soda water. When my food was served it was congealed like it had been sitting out. A bite into it confirmed it likely was, as it was completely cold. I didn't have the energy to ask for a new dish so we let it be. Hopefully it's a better experience for others. read more

If you cannot make French toast, you are in big trouble! I ordered the French toast with fruit. The menu says it is double dipped. It arrived and tasted like toast! Just plain toast as as though it was put in the toaster ! The fruit was good and fresh. I called them and told them about the French toast and to their credit they sent another order. I returned the first order. The second order was so dipped that the batter leaked all over the bag and everything else in which it was wrapped. It was absolutely inedible! We threw it out!. Both the food quality and the service were pretty disappointing. Came for brunch, our server was rushed and didn't really speak clearly, misheard a few orders and brought the wrong drinks. She was in a bad mood with a number of the tables around us and was not very service oriented. Portions are pretty large but the brunch food itself was rather bland. This place is amazing! The ambiance is great, the food was delicious. My friend got the chicken and waffles and I got the short rib sandwich. Both were DIVINE. The waffle wasn't dry at all, chicken cooked perfectly, and my sandwich was juicy and flavorful. Not to mention the service -- everyone was so kind! Marilu was our server and she went above and beyond! She gave great recommendations for the short rib sandwich and it was delicious. Today's experience is what prompted me to write a review -The staff are disinterested and passive aggressive here. Every time. You are visiting a diner, not a fine dining establishment, but prices are out of whack at Green Kitchen -Fries, toast, and most dishes are always either cold or lukewarm, regardless of how busy they are. I truly don't know how hard it is to mess up a wrap, burger, salad or eggs, but they've figured out how to do it here! -Did your server forget something? Good luck getting it. Are you unhappy with your food? Have fun finding someone to help you -Somehow, Green Kitchen is always packed. I don't get it. Despite a few really bad past experiences, I've been here a few times recently and have been much happier with the service and food. I'm glad some changes have been made, and I truly hope it stays that way! Recently, I got the Eggs in Purgatory on their specials menu and it was quite good - basically an Italian flavored shakshuka. My friend got the Pistachio Ricotta Pancakes and if you're craving something on the sweeter side, I would definitely recommend this. Green Kitchen is a place we rarely visit despite living just a block away. At 10 AM, I decided to have brunch with my son, home from college on his first semester--a moment I hoped would be pleasant and memorable. Unfortunately, the horrible service left us feeling frustrated and unwelcome. The trouble started when the waitress got my son's order wrong. He clearly asked for a grilled chicken sandwich, but she brought him a grilled cheese instead. Mistakes happen, but what shocked me was her response. Instead of apologizing, she dismissively said, "Well, you already took a bite." Her lack of accountability was appalling, and I immediately asked to speak with the manager. Thankfully, Nestor, the manager, handled the situation professionally. He apologized sincerely and promptly fixed the order. I assumed he also addressed the issue with the waitress in the back, because when she returned, she apologized--not to us--but to the table next to us. That table happened to be white, while we are brown and the waitress is brown. My son remarked, "That's the dynamics. It's colonial mentality ," implying racial bias may have played a role. Oy vey. While I tried to dismiss the notion, chalking it up to poor customer service and not racism, the optics were undeniably troubling. To salvage the experience, another waitress stepped in and, along with Nestor, brought kindness and professionalism. Their efforts were appreciated, but the damage was done. When you're paying $30 for coffee and a sandwich, the least you expect is courteous service without questioning the fairness of how you're treated. The staff or maybe just that waitress desperately needs customer service training. The waitress in question not only mishandled the situation but also soured what should have been a simple, pleasant meal with my son. While Nestor and the second waitress tried to save the day, I cannot overlook the initial treatment. Until improvements are made, this is not a place I can recommend. We still had an awesome morning despite the waitress doing her best to ruin it. I just wanted a nice time with my son over a meal. Come on ! Do better ! Note: i'm adding this after leaving the restaurant just now. The manager would not let us pay. And he spoke to us in such a real way that it really made us feel special. He even asked about my son's visit and requested to be kind with the review because it reflects on everyone at the restaurant. Wow. Great job, Nestor! There's always hope in humanity. Never give up. I had an issue with my pancakes where it was some undercooked batter inside, they acted as if they were so bothered by that and I asked them to remake them, it was 2 pancakes on the plate but they only gave me 1. My bacon was so hard and overcooked I crumbled it up while they watched me and would NOT come to our table again! And where to sit: three options, bubble ( enclosed sidewalk), shed ( really Al fresco) and inside. I chose the bubble, perks of arriving before your friend, and was greeted by Olga our server. Rochelle chose the special: Eggs Benedict pastrami, latkes with avocado and salad. I ordered the California omelet with cheddar, avocado and mushrooms with potatoes. As we whined, whined and had an emotional five minute conversation about the loss of our beloved NY owl, Flaco, we really enjoyed every morsel. My omelet was delicious and the home fries were decadent. Rochelle loved the pastrami and latkes combination. Olga, who is a great server, pampered us with coffee and water refills and temperature checks( cold? Window closed from bubble?) We looked around at other diners and? I kid you not our table was harassed by waitstaff to get up 50 mins into our reservation with staff coming up to us 6 times within 10 minutes trying to hustle us out and forcing the check at the hour and 5 minute mark. I could not believe it. For our food to take 45 minutes to come out, you'd think it would at least be cooked properly. It wasn't just undercooked, it was completely raw. My turkey sandwich was also painfully dry and the outside was hot, but the inside was cold- which led me to believe it was sitting under a hot lamp for a while, or maybe had been sitting in the kitchen for a while getting cold before serving it to me. Pretty on the outside with expert flower, arrangements and cute tables, but the food was average at best. We waited a long time to be served with menus and food, often being forced to even find our waiter inside to get his attention. The food was also, at times, bewildering (if I can even use such an adjective). For example, I ordered the Mediterranean salad - served with grilled carrots, broccoli, zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, red peppers, melted fresh Mozzarella, grape leaves with whole wheat pita. The dish was served hot and it felt like a bunch of random vegetables were quickly sautéed and covered in cheese. It was the only time in recent memory when I had to actually send the dish back because I couldn't eat it due to the taste. The other food was OK including the fried eggplant but still not up to par. The good news is that this place is often popular and has a lot of customers in the local neighborhood.
