Plain Yogurt w/ Lucero Farms Strawberries
Burrito M.

I normally puchase Straus Creamery non-fat yogurt on a weekly basis, which I eat for breakfast every morning. I really enjoy the yogurt, however the stack of plastic containers that has been building up at our place was starting to bother me. So when I first learned about St. Benoit yogurt products, I was well prepared to love it, the whole concept - family owned, terroir, sustainable, reusable containers, french cultures, jersey cows, etc, etc ,etc. I excitedly bought my first quart glass jar of plain yogurt from the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market this morning. When I got home, I cut up some Lucero Farm strawberries to mix in, took my first bite, and said wow... Unfortunately, the wow was not in a positive sense...My main issue is with the texture and consistency, it is grainy, clumpy, clotted and slightly slimy. I mean the flavor is good, but I hate to say that the texture was kinda repugnant. It was quite a letdown. Rationally, I know that this is what real natural yogurt is supposed to taste like. The smooth and creamy consistency of the yogurt products I grew up with is probably a fallacy, the yogurt I'm used to is manipulated to be this way through processing and the addition of alternate ingredients. With that being said, I'm going to force myself to keep eating the quart that I bought to see if I can eventually get used to it. Sigh...

Wow! I eat yogurt every day with fruit and sometimes, if I'm feeling especially saucy, granola or cereal in it. I buy large containers of non-fat plain and I never buy whole milk yogurt. St. Benoit was a SERIOUS treat for me! It is clearly made with love. I tried Boysenberry because, really, how often do I come across things containing boysenberries? Since I don't live in SF, I won't be able to chow on this stuff regularly but I can tell you that every time I'm in the city on a Saturday or a Tuesday, I'll be purchasing a little endearing ceramic container of scrumptious dairy goodness.

Best yogurt I had ever. Miss them as their products disappeared in supermarkets. Hope they can come back sometime.

My favorite flavors are the strawberry and plum. You can also buy them at Whole Foods.

Simply the best yogurt that I have had in the US hands down!!!!!! And low pasteurized too, which is healthier in my opinion.

Ambiance: Matcha Cafe Maiko is one of a few tea shops…read morespecializing in Matcha flavored drinks and desserts in Japantown. There is no seating located in this particular cafe but plenty of outdoor seating directly outside. The general area can be pretty crowded due to the other store fronts within the mall so if you want a more relaxed matcha tea shop to do work or relax it would be better to order and then leave. Service: They have both a kiosk and a barista taking orders. Staff were friendly and working efficiently and quickly to fill the orders as they were being placed. Wait time: Generally depends on when you go since Japantown mall is a heavily toured area by locals and visitors to the Bay Area but I'd say roughly 10-15 minutes max from standing in line to receiving your drink. Food: The matcha ice cream has a deep matcha flavor with a nice concentration of powder which can be tasted in the soft serve. They also top the soft serve with a light dusting of matcha powder to further enhance the flavors. The cone was soft and light with a gentle sweetness that pairs really well against with the earthiness of the matcha.

Everything from Matcha Cafe Maiko is special. Ironically,…read morefor some mysterious reason, I don't actually like matcha, which feels like a personal failing every time I walk in. Luckily, their other tea offerings are just as good, so I never feel left out. The black sesame latte is a longtime favorite, but today I went with the hojicha frappe and it was excellent. It's not as creamy as, say, a Frappuccino, and the ice crystals are a little larger, but honestly that works in its favor because the roasted hojicha flavor comes through so much more clearly. Deep, toasty, and not overly sweet. Their sundaes are also ridiculously fun, loaded with all kinds of bouncy, chewy little goodies that make your dessert an activity rather than just a course.
