Best yogurt I had ever. Miss them as their products disappeared in supermarkets. Hope they can come back sometime.

OK, so I didn't go to the Ferry Building to get this, I saw it at Whole Foods and it was the little potted jar which attracted me to it. I bought one ceramic pot of meyer lemon yogurt and OMFG, this is some of the BEST yogurt I've ever had. The yogurt was so tasty with little bits of meyer lemon zest in it. I guess if it hadn't been this good I would've totally freaked because at around $2.50 a pot, it's not cheap, but, if it tastes good, I'm all for it!! OKAY people, I'm seriously HOOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This review is for their milk. We have always consumed the milk from their creamery and have been addicted to it. Being from Jersey cows, the milk is delicious and more importantly organic. Earlier today, I went to the store to grab the milk and found that the milk is now sold in a different bottle size. In addition, they changed the bottle from glass to plastic. While I do not mind the change, what I dislike is that they kept the same price while decreasing the quantity of milk. The 32 oz milk in plastic bottle now costs $4.66 and the milk in 33.8 oz glass bottle costed $4.77. Really? You folks went to the cheaper plastic bottles and decided to take the savings from there, while making us pay for the milk only because it sells? I am going to have to reconsider purchasing the milk from Alexandre Family Farms; they also offer half gallon bottles which saves me from buying two- 32 oz bottles. Folks, you have got to work on your business strategy. Your tactics are only going to shoo the loyal customers away. PHOTO---On the left is the glass bottle which is 33.8 oz. I normally puchase Straus Creamery non-fat yogurt on a weekly basis, which I eat for breakfast every morning. I really enjoy the yogurt, however the stack of plastic containers that has been building up at our place was starting to bother me. So when I first learned about St. Benoit yogurt products, I was well prepared to love it, the whole concept - family owned, terroir, sustainable, reusable containers, french cultures, jersey cows, etc, etc ,etc. I excitedly bought my first quart glass jar of plain yogurt from the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market this morning. When I got home, I cut up some Lucero Farm strawberries to mix in, took my first bite, and said wow... Unfortunately, the wow was not in a positive sense...My main issue is with the texture and consistency, it is grainy, clumpy, clotted and slightly slimy. I mean the flavor is good, but I hate to say that the texture was kinda repugnant. It was quite a letdown. Rationally, I know that this is what real natural yogurt is supposed to taste like. The smooth and creamy consistency of the yogurt products I grew up with is probably a fallacy, the yogurt I'm used to is manipulated to be this way through processing and the addition of alternate ingredients. With that being said, I'm going to force myself to keep eating the quart that I bought to see if I can eventually get used to it. Sigh... read more

I don't like writing reviews, I don't really complain about anything I think this website should be for women, but I see a lot of guys acting like women on here. Anyways... The quality of the milk and the yogurt are extravagant and superb. I recently noticed the milk bottles changed to plastic bottles. This is very disappointing to me, because of the contamination that can occur with plastic and the taste factor of the milk. Do your research on plastic bottles it's pretty sad we still use plastic bottles. This causes concern to me on how legit this farm is, and how they treat their animals. I don't care about the price if the product is good I will pay, but safety comes first and is the most important to me. I'm sad to say I will not be buying this product because of the credibility of the company. read more

Let me start with saying that Saint Benoit yogurt is amazing, there is nothing like it! Creamy thick wonderful! I am speaking only for Plain variety, I love it. Used to, anyway. Until they quietly reduced the size of their jars - but kept the high price. I don't mind paying that price for what I'm used to - I feel like it's a fair exchange - my hardworking dollars for this creamy heaven. But, their beloved (recyclable!) ceramic jars, $2.25 or so, first shrinked from 8 oz to 7 oz (196 g), and then more recently were reduced to barely there 4.75 oz (135 g) - all at the same high price! From 28c per ounce they jumped to 47c per ounce! And the large sized glass jars that I loved and which provided the best value, $5.99 - $6.99 for the jar, depending on the store that sold them, went down in size from 32 oz (18c - 22c per ounce) to 23 oz (26c - 30c per ounce). That's 28% increase! This is where I draw a line. If their production costs increased, they should have simply increased the price, I'm sure their loyal customers would understand that. But playing these all-American marketing games on French-style yogurt (quietly reducing the size while keeping the price intact) just threw me off completely, no matter how loyal I wanted to stay. read more

I wish I had something witty to say about this. It's just really fucking good. Perfectly sweetened. I haven't tried the meyer lemon, but the plum is amazing. I do, however, always pronounce it with the T and the end just to annoy them. It's irresistible. Ps. I forgot to mention how much I enjoy the plain flavor. So, I have a problem with my stomach and acids, which is further irritated by the fact that I drink my coffee black and eat really spicy food. My doctor recommended a probiotic diet, such as eating yogurt every day to help with digestion. I took this to mean: eat lots of yogurt, drink all the coffee I want and eat as spicy as I would like. The first time I tried this yogurt, I really liked it. My French aunt made yogurt similar to this. Yes, I was blessed with a French aunt; her name is Françoise. She made delectable batches of yogurt, brioche, jam, and lots of delicious foods. Although, I have a hard time shelling out the money for the little ceramic jars. But then I read a little more into the company. Jersey cows, pastured, environmentally friendly--these are all things I support, and what better way to support this than by adhering to these principles and shelling out the money to purchase the yogurt? For me, it's like killing three birds with one stone: sustainable and environmentally friendly products that are local, health reasons, and plain old nostalgia. I buy the large jars that I divide up into little jars at home, with Marshall's honey or my own homemade compote. The quart size jars are really a bargain, and somehow, now that I've made more of an effort to buy local and sustainable goods, I'm spending less money than I did before. The best yogurt ever!!! Hands down. I don't care how much, I love it. Plum is my favorite, second to that is lemon then strawberry. Not too crazy about the plain. The only problem is that the price only allows my husband and I to share one per day (which we did for a couple of months. I can't believe we spent so much money on yogurt.) But seriously, if you like yogurt you got to try it. Even if you think it's just too expensive. Just try one. Try the plum. You won't regret it. I remember the first time I bought one. I was at Whole Foods making some last minute purchases for a camping trip and I got on Plum and one Strawberry. The camping trip hadn't started off on a good foot (we got lost, had to set up tent in the dark on what seemed like a camp site, and I remember how eerie it is to sleep in the woods.) The next morning we realized that we had camped on a site but hadn't park in the correct spot. Everything seemed to be going wrong until I said let's sit down, have some breakfast and relax for a bit. I took out the yogurt and handed it to my husband. He took one bite and his eyes lite up. That was the best yogurt he'd ever had. It reminded him of the yogurt from his grandmother's farm. Our trip turned a corner at that point and it turned out to be the best camping trip ever. read more

The Saint Benoit yogurt stand at the Ferry Building Farmers Market used to get me all excited... Until I started buying ceramic jars from Rainbow Grocery... The consistency is not... Consistent. Sometimes I'll get a watery, clotted batch & sometimes it's thick & rich & firm like I remember it to be... (Maybe this is an issue for Rainbow Grocery...) I love that buttery cream topping & the flavors are really refreshing (faves are Meyer lemon & honey), but I like consistency, especially when you're paying upwards of $3-$4 for one little jar of yogurt. read more

You can get this at the Berkeley bowl Market on Shattuck, Berkeley!! It's super creamy and smooth. Might not be used to it the first bite, but then it becomes addicting and you will seek more when your spoon hits bottom :D Personally I like their honey and plum flavors best. read more

I'm tasting the plain yogurt here. Tastes chalky and not very smooth, even after I've stirred in the congealed mass (fat) from the top. Despite the proclaimed lack of evil thickeners (the most common, by the way, is simply dry milk powder...yeah, *shiver in horror*), it tastes thickened with something that gives it a rough, chalky mouth-feel. I like the tart taste, but I could see some yogurt fans finding it too tart. Though it's tart, it lacks the acidity that sometimes gives yogurt that extra tang. Because I've made yogurt before, I can surmise that St. Benoit's yogurt isn't left to age long enough, perhaps to keep it sweeter and more mild, or perhaps pushing it out to the stores too soon. There seems to be an imbalance between the starter culture flavor/characteristics and the ripening process. Maybe if they tweaked it a little bit more, it would be an exceptional product. Beyond the actual yogurt: you don't get much for your $2 after your container deposit refund (total $3.25). You do get a spiffy container with some pretentious sounding words on it, though. I first tried this yogurt last weekend at the Berkeley Farmers' Market. I liked what was on the tasting spoon but thought that the asking price for a little pot of it was on the steep side. I hurried away from the market in the hopes that the St. Benoit experience would fade from my mind, but instead it gnawed at me all week. Finally I broke down and bought what looks to be a quart of the Meyer Lemon at the Berkeley Bowl for $7.49. (Some of this will come back as a deposit refund when I return the glass jar.) This yogurt could not be marketed as "light and lively." It's anything but. I'd term it dense, fatty and delicious. The makers did a great job of infusing their product with meyer lemon-ness. This won't be to everyone's liking, but it's definitely worth checking out. Come down to the farmers' market -- it's easy enough to snag a taste. read more

I love going to Farmer's Markets and I normally eat Activia in the morning, but after reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" a few months ago, it completely changed the way I view food and made me realize I haven't been eating enough of it -- REAL food, that is. You can just tastes how legit Saint Benoit's yogurt is. They use Organic Jersey Cow's milk with no additives like gelatin, milk powder, or extra sugar. My favorite part is the fruit or zest at the bottom of the reusable jars. I always buy the quart size. It's a bit on the pricier side but once take your first bite, you'll understand why it's worth it. read more

Wow! I eat yogurt every day with fruit and sometimes, if I'm feeling especially saucy, granola or cereal in it. I buy large containers of non-fat plain and I never buy whole milk yogurt. St. Benoit was a SERIOUS treat for me! It is clearly made with love. I tried Boysenberry because, really, how often do I come across things containing boysenberries? This is absolutely, hands down the best yogurt I have ever had! Just so we are clear, the reason that the consistancy may seem different to some people who aren't used to high quality, artisanal yogurt is that Benoit uses 100% jersey cow milk which is richer than the normal blends that most comanies use so it has a little bit different of a mouth feel. Anyway, all of the ingrediants are fresh and local and he is the nicest and most ethical guy ever. I used to work with him at the market so I know. And after getting the refund back for the container it really isn't that much more expensive than other 100% natural, local, sustainable, delicious yogurts out there. Wait, there aren't any. That is why you pay a little more, because that is what it costs to make a product like that at a small local facility with local cows, not at some mass producing facility. It is worth it. Benoit, keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep eating! And whichever yelper said that he hadn't tried the meyer lemon yet, try it! it is sooo good! read more

Do not buy this yogurt. St. Benoit used to be the best yogurt on the market. It was a true traditional European yorgurt, made from non-homogenized milk. It had a layer of cream on top and the yogurt was thick, creamy and solid. I held its shape in the glass over many days. The whey used to accumulated in the dips and could be reintegrated or poured off and what remained - in either case was wonderful, thick and lucious. Recently, the company 'updated' their packaging and changed the beloved consistency of the yogurt. Now, the yogurt is watery and has the weirdest, gross, gel-like consistency. It no longer has a layer of cream on top, which makes me think they no longer use non-homogenized milk. The packaging does not say it contains non-homogenized milk. It now looks, feels and tastes like watery milk was treated with gelatin. The packaging says it contains only milk, but it sure doesnt taste that way anymore. I contacted them, asking them why they changed a product beloved by many, but never heard back. They went from having the top-of-the-market traditional creamy, dense yogurt to a watery, gelatinous, blobby former shadow of itself. Someone told me the company had been sold - which would explain so much - but I have not been able to verify this. The website still carries pictures of their old label still, which is no longer what is sold in stores today and talks about when the company was founded but not who currently owns it. My advice is stay as far away from this as you can. read more

I love this yogurt and really appreciate buying it in glass jars. I am eliminating plastic containers for health reasons. But I was so disappointed to see the reduction in size from 32 oz to 23 oz for the same price. And I am disappointed that the jars are no longer recyclable back to the company. The new jars have a plastic label and enough adhesive on it so that it is impossible to remove without using toxic chemicals. Sorry but you no longer have a customer, unless things change. read more

St. Benoit yogurt is pretty good. My mom makes her own yogurt -- everyone does in my family -- soooo for the price, I'm not really going to give it 5 stars. If you can afford it, and you don't have a momma who makes you yogurt, this is pretty good (though Pavel's is better). I'm mainly writing this to address a couple things that other reviewers wrote: 1. You can also get it at Andronico's 2. Commercial yogurts have PLENTY of other thickeners besides powdered milk, gelatin to name one. Just read the label. All great yogurt should have in it is milk and bacterial cultures. read more

Yummy yogurt. The only reason I'm giving three stars is for the poor service I received at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. No one else was at their stand, so there was no line. The owner didn't see us, BUT the woman behind the counter completely ignored us. She was just sitting there carrying on a conversation with the owner, blankly staring at us and still talking (RUDE!). The owner eventually turned around after putting his trays away and gladly helped us. Never paid attention to St. Benoit yogurt. Bought it today in NYC Whole Foods, tasted it and had that rare moment of a throwback to taste memory of top French yogurt. The true dairy taste transferred the aromas of the fields in which the cows roam and the grass they eat. The Meyer lemon yogurt is fantastic and not poisoned by sugar, a rarity in the USA. The quality and taste are on par with the best In France and this is not less than a miracle. read more

Very disappointed by their recent move to environmentally unfriendly packaging: they don't reuse glass anymore, making them worse than competitors that use plastic packaging (more efficient to recycle and easier to transport since lighter and more durable). So almost everybody I know including my family moved to buying Strauss, which is also cheaper. read more

Simply the best yogurt that I have had in the US hands down!!!!!! And low pasteurized too, which is healthier in my opinion.

I normally hate pre-sweetened yogurt, but Saint Benoit is an exception to the rule. The meyer lemon yogurt is simply to die for, despite the high price tag. The sugar doesn't overpower the flavor like it does in most yogurts, but rather simply balances out the tartness of the lemon and yogurt cultures. Plus, it always seems to taste better out of the cool ceramic containers - maybe that's just me. Delicious! read more

Amazing yogurt. My sisters and I had this for lunch while we were visiting CA. I had the Meyer Lemon and my sisters had honey and plum yogurts, we bought some fruit and had a tasty little meal right there. That the guys selling it are polite and really handsome ain't hurtin' nothin' either. We kept the ceramic mugs as souvenirs from our trip. Definitely a highlight. read more
