Stracciatella, Coffee Gelato
Eileen T.

Solid spot for gelato! After an arduous hilly hiking session on a sunny SF day, we were craving a cold treat to energize us. There was a short line, and each person was allotted 2 samples. I ended up ordering the stracciatella and the coffee cardamom gelato flavors, which were pretty good. They weren't too sweet, though I did wish the cardamom in the coffee gelato was a bit stronger. But overall, they had a good flavor selection and I'd stop by again!

Delicious ice cream! I've had better (ones that were more pistachio forward) which is why I rated it a 4, but still very good. There were a few seats inside so you can enjoy it there.

Philmore Creamery is known for their small batch gelato made in house. The small batch ensures the freshest gelato is served and you can truly taste the difference. We came in on a Saturday afternoon with no line in sight. They had a few sorbet flavors, one oatmilk based gelato and some classic flavors like pistachio, stracciatella, and chocolate hazelnut. We sampled a few flavors but didn't find any particularly exceptional.. however we could not leave empty handed because my guilty conscience could never. We opted for a single scoop of the pistachio. The single scoop was more than plenty for the both of us to share because they really pack it into the cup. The gelato was really creamy and soft, slightly nutty. However, the flavor was sort of bland and not sweet. Perhaps this is great for people who enjoy things not sweetened or those who are diabetic. But for me personally, I didn't find it particularly up my alley. The waffle cookie was delicious though. The interior is small but theres a few tables inside where you can enjoy your gelato. There is a spot to "park your dog" right outside too. Philmore Creamery is a good spot if you're looking for something different in that the gelato is more creamy and rich rather than sweet.

Checked out Philmore Creamery after a movie night at AMC in Japantown. They were close to closing, but we managed to snag a couple scoops of gelato. Service was quick and friendly, and the staff gave us a great rundown of the flavors -- some are regulars while others rotate daily. - Single Scoop (Stracciatella, Gianduia Crunch / Chocolate Hazelnut) -- the stracciatella was light and creamy with chocolate chips, reminding me of the gelato I had back in Europe; the chocolate hazelnut had that rich Ferrero Rocher flavor -- silky, nutty, and perfectly balanced. Together, an indulgent and smooth combo! Their flavors are unique yet approachable, leaning on creative but familiar pairings. They also offer gelato bars and gelato cakes in the front side display case. The space is cute and cozy, with a few indoor seats and an outdoor standing table. Bonus points for the adorable dog parking sign with leash hooks by the entrance. Can't wait to come back to try more of their gelato flavors!

The gelato here? So good!! We swung by while waiting for our dinner reservations at a nearby restaurant. I'm not a big sweets person, but their unique flavors definitely had me hooked when we walked in. I tried the banana creme brulee and the chocolate hazelnut gelatos. The banana was reminiscent of a banana pudding w/ a creme brulee crust torched on top. The hazelnut gelato was the perfect pair for it! The staff were super friendly. They have a limit of 2 flavor samples per person. There's some seating inside, but the day we visited it was a bit humid so we opted to eat and walk. Super great variety here - they mentioned that they rotate their flavors frequently!

There are very few gelato flavors here. I got the stracciatella flavor in a cone. The cone was really good but the actual gelato was okay. I think it should've been a bit sweeter in general. The chocolate pieces were too bitter and strong for me. I do wish they had more flavor options. The employees are friendly and welcoming and encourage you to sample flavors which was nice.

Gianduia is hazelnut and chocolate.

The ice cream is very chewy: it's high in stabilizer content. 4.3: Gianduia cunch: hazelnut/chocolate with crunchy mix-in. OK, not worth the calories. 3.9: Pistachio: The flavor is very muted; they probably use a low percentage of pistachio paste by volume.

Popped in like 10 minutes before closing to find a line. They let you sample 2. Friendly service. Some limited seating. I got the straciatella and granduia crunch. The straciatella was nice and light and not overly sweet. I LOVED granduia crunch. It's like a chocolate hazelnut flavor and tasted just like Ferraro rocher. The chunks were the perfect amount of crunch

Happened to be in the neighborhood so stopped in for a treat. -Nice variety of tasty gelato and sorbetto -Quick service -Bright clean shop This place checks all the boxes! I had plum and my daughter had chocolate - both really good. Gotta try their frozen popsicles next time.

They nailed the peanut butter jelly flavor, which was balanced really well. The mint chocolate chip was good too but could have used more chocolate. They let you put multiple flavors in even the smallest portion you can order (a small cup), which is nice! A few seats inside and they also offer to-go pints of their ice cream. They also had a few cake options that I haven't tried yet. Great spot!

This place continues to amaze me. I will go out of my way to come here and have dessert. I'm extremely pleased they are continuing to thrive in this location. Go there!!!

One of the best gelatos in town. A good variety of flavors to explore, excellent texture. Staff are super nice and helpful. Nice little place to come back for!

Fresh Organic Strawberry sorbet & Salted Caramel Gelato (Size small $6.50)
Anthony O.

Ran across this place today--reviews seemed pretty high for a gelato spot, so I gave it a try. The consistency was very creamy and didn't melt too quickly, but to be honest, I liked the texture so much I probably just ate my small-size gelato fast. Service was nice. The woman working there made it clear to other customers that they were limited to two samples. I didn't love that policy, if it's someone's first time and they're considering three flavors, it's a bit discouraging to have to take a chance on the third. I tried the strawberry and the peach; I loved the strawberry, it tasted like an actual strawberry and was light, not too sweet or like it had so much artificial flavors, which was great to taste good quality. The peach, on the other hand, was pretty basic and didn't have that rich, peachy flavor I was hoping for. Thankfully, she did let me try a third flavor and I went with the salted caramel per her recommendation, which I appreciated. Honestly, if she hadn't, I probably would've just walked out. I understand the concern about people sampling too much and not buying, but by limiting samples, you could also be turning away potential returning customers, or even missing out on upsells. That's the main reason I docked a star from my rating for customer service and business approach. The flavor combo I chose ended up being really good and creamy. However, when I ordered half-and-half, the portions weren't even. The strawberry made up maybe 35% of the cup, it was mostly on the top half while the salted caramel filled the whole base. That was disappointing since I actually preferred the strawberry. (Also why I rated them 4 out of 5.) The ambiance was very casual and mid--nothing special. Definitely more of a grab-and-go kind of place. Overall, I'd go again. The gelato was actually yummy and creamy (though the apricot lacked flavor, so I didn't get it).

Ask the Community - Philmore Creamery

Hello, When will the Tiramisu crunch flavour be back? We have gone back last two weekends with no luck.

Sorry one more question. We got Gianduia. Is gianduia crunch different?

No problem, love your questions! It’s the same Gianduia ingredients with an added cookie crunch. So there is gluten in the crunch. Hope that helps.

Is your ice cream gluten free?

Hi Milly Most of the flavors are gluten free. We have two flavors (Lemon Cookie and Gianduia Crunch) which contain gluten, otherwise, the rest are gluten free.

Can you list your daily flavors online?

Thank you Jen. We are working on our website to include standard flavors as well as the scoop of the day. We should have it completed soon.

Do you have any vegan options that are not sorbet/sorbetto?

At this time I m not making anything with soy or almond. Only sorbetto with water, fruit and sugar.

Are there any dairy-feee options?

Yes we always have sorbetto, dairy-free, options batched with local seasonal fruit and more.

Without a doubt, we knew we'd be getting an authentic dessert!! Dropped in at 9:30pm on a Friday night, and felt like we stumbled into a magical little corner of Valencia. The gelato here is whipped up in these futuristic spinning machines with bubble lids; they almost look like washing machines. Absolutely whimsical. The flavors are expansive and fresh; the strawberry was excellent, though the Greek yogurt was our surprising favorite. There were so many unique and intriguing flavors (from orange and cinnamon to strawberry balsamic), we'll absolutely have to stop by again. The real charm of this place comes from the story; we read about it while waiting in line and were absolutely captivated by the story of love, community, and heritage that shapes Hila. It's well worth a read, and honestly sold us on the shop (although the gelato definitely still carries its own!). The story of Hila breathing life back into an old parlor is absolutely heartwarming. I wish nothing but much success for the future of Hila.

I was urged to hold my nose and try it by someone I generally trust, because they raved about this place. The biggest offense was the misleading description on the Doordash menu, but Google's info has the same impression as well--that is, it claims to be "topped" with corn flakes. TOPPED!! Not middled, not bottomed, not everywhered. I don't particularly care for bread product in my ice cream or gelato because it just gets mushy..and boy were these corn flakes ever mushy. Its such a gross texture. I was desparate for chocolate hazelnut. Desserts given bready garnishings isn't unususal, Super Duper does it with their shakes. As a topping I figured it would be easy to shovel off...wrong. What I paid $27 for is a gigantic wad of mushy corn flakes with chocolate drizzled through the cracks and I can't for the life of me taste any hazelnut. This was disgusting. I am extremely disappointed. A pint of corn flakes costs what, $0.50? I was ripped off...enjoy the profit margin. I'm no stranger to gelato. I've been to Italy several times and not American tourist areas but hometowns of long-time Italian friends: Poggiardo, Lecce, Castro Marina & Castro Alta, Galatina, Otranto. I've made gelato there myself. I worked in a gelateria that's actually managed to stay alive in the Bay Area for 20 years, Gelateria Naia. WhileI don't go to new places with expectations of what I had somewhere else, I do appreciate a balance of value and quality. I was left feeling so far from either in my first experience with Hila's gelato that it's the first time in probably a couple years that I couldn't stop a bad purchase from ruining my night. It really came down to the price tag for delivery: $27 for a pint! And not a single spoonful worth ingesting. How do I ever give this a try again? I don't see how it's possible. I just wanted something I could eat and then tell my friend (who recommended this place enthusiastically) it was worth the money or not. I couldn't eat this. Every spoonful was a huge glob of mushy cereal.

Located directly at the corner of Union St/Buchanan St in the heart of the Marina, this wildly popular place that is owned and operated by Italians has been in operation dating back to early-2018. The hours of operation here are quite generous as they're open daily from 10:30am-9:30pm with extended hours until 10:30pm on Friday & Saturday. The interior layout is small yet big enough to showcase several items for purchase; whole & ground coffee, jams, spreads, snacks, and even pasta sauces. And if gelato isn't your thing, they also have quite a bit of Italian cookies and desserts for purchase. Finally, if you wish to enjoy your gelato before it melts, they also offer a couple of small tables & chairs inside as well as one public restroom. Now onto the gelato itself! Much of their gelato is dairy-free & vegan plant-based with some of their gelato offering the addition of sugar, water and/or milk. They offer 4 different sizes (kids, small, medium, large) in either a cup or cone. And if you're thinking outside of the box, they also have a nice variety of espresso drinks as well as fresh pastries that are baked daily. Since I wasn't too hungry (after a big dinner), I went with a kids size cone of their "Italian Crema". This was a rich, velvety texture of creamy deliciousness. And since it was considering a 'kids' size, I didn't feel too guilty enjoying this. I will say that the customer service here was top notch as the employees allowed me to sample a few gelatos prior to narrowing down my selection. The prices are also quite reasonable as they are lower than some of the other places in San Francisco as well as gelato spots I've been to in Los Angeles and New York. With a charming interior setup, prime location, and delicious gelatos, I am giving "GIO Gelati" a perfect five-star rating.
