If you're planning to visit Dandelion Chocolate, my biggest piece of advice is to double-check which location you're heading to. We originally went to the location near Union Square, thinking we'd be able to grab pastries and hot chocolate, only to realize it's primarily a retail shop with chocolate bars and merchandise. We ended up making our way to the Valencia Street location, and I'm so glad we did. We learned that it used to be the original factory before they outgrew the space. Production has since moved a few blocks away, and now this location offers classes, a café, and plenty of chocolate treats. While we were there, a chocolate-making class was in session, and it was fun to watch part of it. The instructor even came over to chat with us and answer a few questions, which was such a nice personal touch. We ordered the brownie bite flight along with a hot chocolate, and both were fantastic. The brownie flight was rich, flavorful, and a fun way to sample different chocolates. The hot chocolate came with a tiny cookie that was absolutely delicious. At first, we were a little disappointed because we thought our hot chocolate was supposed to come with a marshmallow and didn't see one. When we mentioned it, the instructor smiled and showed us a toppings station we had completely missed. There were homemade marshmallows, flavored sugar cubes, and other little extras you could add yourself. He even encouraged us to take a few extra marshmallows, and they were some of the best I've ever had. One thing to know before you go is that Dandelion Chocolate focuses on high-quality chocolate that isn't overly sweet. If you're expecting the sugary milk chocolate flavor of a candy bar, this is a different experience. The chocolate has a richer, more complex flavor, and we really enjoyed trying something different. My wife and I stopped by Dandelion Chocolate to pick up an afternoon treat and we shared a chocolate chip cookie and a chocolate flavored canelé. The treats were tasty, but on the pricier side. I believe the pricing reflects the quality of the chocolate used in the products, so to me, the pricing is justified. The outer shell of the canelé had a nice crunch, but the inside actually reminded me of a chocolate brownie, and was less custardy than your typical canelé. Despite not being super traditional, I still really enjoyed the treat. With the chocolate chip cookie, I loved the giant chunks of semi-sweet dark chocolate embedded within it. I appreciate that the cookie itself wasn't overly sweet. With most cookies, I usually can only tolerate having a few bites, or need to have a coffee in hand to enjoy it, but I didn't feel like that was the case here: both treats were delicious. While I appreciate fine chocolate, I'm no connoisseur when it comes to top-tier craft chocolate. I just know Dandelion by their lofty reputation and that it rests on their approach, a pure mix of cocoa beans and sugar without the need of extra cocoa butter. Last year I saw how insanely popular their Tokyo store was, so I finally tried this cafe for the first time because it was unusually empty as I was passing by. I had no idea what to order because the menu wasn't conspicuous to virginal visitors. Only later did I notice the drink menu on the left wall. The openly exposed desserts are what really caught my eye first. I decided to order the $6.75 Frozen Hot Chocolate because it frankly reminded me of the decadent monstrosities at the legendary Serendipity 3 in Manhattan's Midtown East (Photo 8). It was similar but not nearly as huge of pricy. I liked it a lot though with a generous dollop of whipped cream, it was more a mid-afternoon dessert. That should've been enough, but the confections on display were too inviting. Filled with 70% Takyikrom and Ghana chocolate ganache, the $8 Apple Donut was freckled with candied apple bits and tossed in spiced sugar (Photo 9). Delightfully decadent. Who doesn't like chocolate? Okay, I haven't eaten a lot of high end chocolates until now! Dandelion Chocolates is a specialty chocolatier. They work with cocoa farmers and produce small batches of chocolates in their factory. They highlight the different chocolate bean's unique flavors. Their flavors include classic fudge to tangy fruit. I was gifted a box single origin truffles. The truffles were a box of 15 chocolates. The flavors were dulce leche almond, chocolate ganache with blueberry jam, and fresh strawberry honey cheesecake. You can tell just from the combination of flavors that someone spent a lot of time and effort to develop an exciting combination of flavors for someone with an experienced tasting palate. The only thing I would mention is that these fine chocolates expiration date is only a couple weeks. So, you will need to finish your box of chocolates sooner, rather than later. Oh, no! I will have to eat my chocolates sooner rather than later, because they don't have all of the stabilizers and emulsifiers to make it last longer. I went on a factory tour for my birthday and had the best time! We walked through the entire bean to bar process and tried many different chocolates that dandelion makes along the way. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and patient with our groups questions, and we even got to try some truffles/confections. I first visited Dandelion Chocolate for a team event and loved the experience so much that I brought my family back the same weekend. The house hot chocolate was delicious -- rich, smooth, and not overly sweet. The Baked Ghana ice cream was amazing; we have never had chocolate ice cream like that before. The interior of the store is gorgeous - it's a beautiful cafe with plenty to look at. Props to whoever curated the fire music selection. I remember telling my friend that Dandelion's music was better than what I've heard at a lot of clubs. A whole section of the store is dedicated to chocolate bars and boxes they sell. It was impressive to see the variety of special flavors and spices in each chocolate selection. It felt like a lot of thought was put into each product. The drink and pastry selection is vast and really adds to the luxurious feel of the store. There seems to be a major emphasis on the different chocolate flavors, highlighted throughout their menu. I was intrigued by the brownie bite flight. Every brownie had a different flavor note. I tried the mission hot chocolate, which was so rich and spicy. I've never tasted a hot chocolate like this before, and I was obsessed. There are fluffy marshmallows on the side that you can place in your drink. The drink also comes with a small biscuit that tastes wonderful dipped in the hot chocolate. It's definitely a pretty penny for a small cup, but the unique flavor made it completely worth it. I enjoyed this place so much that I visited several times over the course of one weekend. It was extremely busy at all hours, so be prepared to wait awhile for your order. Let's start off by saying... it's Dandelion Chocolate. There is much to like. I love going to their Ferry Building location and taking whatever free samples I can get. It's so fun tasting the different flavors between their seemingly similar chocolate bars and occasionally trying fancier concoctions like their truffles or bonbons. I really like the Mission location for the food and drink, of course, but also the seating space and ambiance! It's a very aesthetic place to get work done or catch up with a friend. This time, I swung by to get some work done, and I ordered the Babka French Toast ($12) and some tea. Everything was lovely! I will say, I was expecting more of a breadlike crumb from the french toast, but it was much more like a lightly toasted pound cake. I will say it was on the drier side, but the absolutely luscious chocolate sauce helped a lot! The granola was very good as well, buttery and crispy. I happen to be in San Francisco today and was craving Dandelion Chocolate's Frozen Hot Chocolate and as always it did not disappoint! We also discovered a Chocolate Cream Tart with whipped cream on the side and "WOW", it literally knocked my socks off with its creamy texture and not overly sweet deliciousness! My husband was saying it reminded him of the textures of a Flan, light and just right! This is the OG (original) Dandelion's on Valencia that is tried and true and they always seem to have everything in stock from their food and drink offerings to their beautifully wrapped gift ideas. Service and people here are top notch! A fair amount of seating to just chill and enjoy your drinks and dessert. The Cashier was so sweet and gave us two caramel filled truffles on the house.
