The wrappers for Alter Eco's truffles are actually compostable!

There's too much to say about their chocolates but I'll just limit this to the ethical side of the review. OK, I'll say one thing about their chocolates - check out their truffles! Overall, I think that Alter Eco deserves 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Alter Eco has developed compostable wrappers for their truffles! The wrappers are made mostly from eucalyptus and birch. * The box is also FSC-certified and it looks like Alter Eco is very close to its goal of excluding plastic (even shrink-wrap for shipping) and only using packaging that's recyclable or compostable. * Alter Eco covers 100% of its carbon footprint by planting trees and conserving land in the Peruvian Amazon, through the Pur project. * 92.8% of the truffle ingredients are Fair Trade certified - in fact Alter Eco pays 1.3 times the Fair Trade price. * All of the relevant truffle ingredients are certified organic and are sourced from farmer-owned coops * To go beyond organic the Alter Eco Foundation was launched to transition cacao farmers from monoculture to regenerative agroforestry * Alter Eco is a certified B Corporation (with a very good score of 134)

Very interesting chocolate business concept. I saw their booth at the Bastille Day party at Justin Herman park. I was looking for chocolate for a friend recently and that's why I was inclined to check this out. I thought 4 bars for $10 was a great deal. The orange chocolate bar was $1...so that's what I got--5 bars for $11! The chocolate is very unique and tasteful. Started by two Frenchman who are now based in the Bay Area. Reminds me of the chocolate company Tcho, but it's more environmentally conscious. If you see Alter Eco, check them out. The samples were generous and really helped me decide what I wanted.

Look for the 'Fair Trade' logo on ALL products.

I am a HUGE fan of Dark Chocolate and finding GREAT Vegan Dark Chocolate is hard to come by. I came across Organic/Vegan Alter Eco Dark Almond Chocolate yesterday (06-02-2013) and I am in love. This Dark Chocolate was included in my Healthy Surprise box and I quickly began the search of where I could find it locally. I quickly went onto Alter Eco's website and discovered that they had a search feature that allows you to enter your zip code and find local store that sell 'Alter Eco.' After discovering that several Whole Foods store sold 'Alter Eco' I gave them a call and quite frankly the person(s) I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about so I called 'Alter Eco' themselves and they were extremely helpful. The folks from 'Alter Eco' went into great detail about all of the 'Fair Trade' products they carry. Alter Eco not only sells Chocolate but they sell Quinoa, Rice & Sugar, all of which are 'Fair Trade Certified' items. You might ask yourself what is 'Fair Trade'? Well 'Fair Trade' means the producers have been paid a price that ensures sustainable production and living conditions, along with a premium to support the growth and advancement of the cooperatives and their communities. Contract prices between Alter Eco and the supplying farmers are 10% to 30% higher than the local market price, with an additional Fair Trade premium set every year by the Fairtrade Labelling Organization (by product category and country of origin). In a global food system where farmers often carry debt three times their annual income, Fair Trade provides concrete opportunities for a stable, prosperous life. I was pleased to discover that since 2007 Alter Eco has provided: $1,116,000 beyond market prices. $150,000 in premiums. Sustainable development for 6 co-ops. A living wage for 5,300 farmers. Alter Eco is also NON-GMO. To me there is no question where I will be buying my Vegan Dark Chocolate from this date forward. I truly do not care that I am paying $1.00 - $1.50 more for Chocolate knowing where it comes, who Alter Eco is supporting and the quality/care that goes into the product. If you have yet to try this product Vegan or not, you have to give Alter Eco a shot and I in my opinion you will not be disappointed.

Not only do they strive to promote fair trade by using a sustainable approach, they are also dedicated to the excellence of their products. Beyond the core green foundation of the company, well...I'm a chocoholic and their varieties of chocolate are simply amazing. From the coffee to the tea, to the other goods, their products are truly of superior quality.

As someone who's picky about chocolate desserts, I really enjoyed this stop…read more The hot chocolate had a deeper cacao flavor than most places, and I liked that it wasn't overly sweet or heavy. It felt much more balanced and grown-up than the usual sugary version. The pastry I tried was also nicely done.. rich, layered, and satisfying without being too much. What stood out most to me, though, was the whole atmosphere. It feels part café, part chocolate boutique, part tasting experience. Even just browsing the bars and beautifully packaged products was fun. A really nice place if you enjoy thoughtful desserts and want something that feels a little more elevated than a typical coffee-and-pastry stop.

Last year I saw how insanely popular their Tokyo store was, so I finally tried this cafe for the first time because it was unusually empty as I was passing by. I had no idea what to order because the menu wasn't conspicuous to virginal visitors. Only later did I notice the drink menu on the left wall. The openly exposed desserts are what really caught my eye first. I decided to order the $6.75 Frozen Hot Chocolate because it frankly reminded me of the decadent monstrosities at the legendary Serendipity 3 in Manhattan's Midtown East (Photo 8). It was similar but not nearly as huge of pricy. I liked it a lot though with a generous dollop of whipped cream, it was more a mid-afternoon dessert. That should've been enough, but the confections on display were too inviting. Filled with 70% Takyikrom and Ghana chocolate ganache, the $8 Apple Donut was freckled with candied apple bits and tossed in spiced sugar (Photo 9). Delightfully decadent. I really like that you can choose exactly how many of each flavor you want in your box. I didn't realize that before, but it's a great option because you could literally get one of everything if you wanted to try them all. I chose orange, citron/lemon, caramel, earl grey, espresso, raspberry, and hazelnut. There was also a vegan raspberry option since the regular raspberry had sold out for the day, and honestly you couldn't tell the difference. It was delicious. I also tried the lemon in store, and the raspberry was my favorite. One small thing is that once they're bagged up, it can be a little hard to tell which flavor is which since they look pretty similar on the outside. Not a big deal, just something to keep in mind if you're trying to remember what's what. The owner mentioned he's had the shop for 30 years, which you can feel when you're in there. He took the time to neatly tie up the box and even gave me two complimentary pieces. The shop itself is tiny and charming with a good variety of flavors. A friend of mine has been coming here since childhood, and now I understand the hype. I'll definitely be back.

One suggestion: I really wish they would offer frozen fruit smoothies here -maybe a super simplified version of their café offerings. It would do incredibly well. There's a clear market gap in the area with tons of foot traffic, and it would put something tangible in customers' hands to sip on while they walk around, keeping the unique chocolate experience that's offered at Dandelion at the forefront of the mind.
