The chocolate is divine. It's high quality and each piece has rich flavors that taste fresh. Some people might balk at $3 for a truffle but it tastes like it's worth $3. The taste is luxurious. They change up the flavors every few months. I tend to not like chocolate that is too dark but here it isn't too strong. My favorites: Champagne-pretty heart shape and tastes very champagney Banana Fosters- Colorful and very flavorful Peanut Butter and Jelly-essential for peanut butter lovers Lavendar-it's like aromatherapy for your mouth The truffles remind me of Christopher Elbow in the city for quality but in a must less fancy setting and more obscure location. Always good to support your local chocolate shop over the mass produced candy bars and chocolate you can get at the grocery store. They have unique flavors and there's a sense of giving yourself a treat after a long days work. I'm a mango and coffee fan so that's what I tried in these chocolates. I always miss when this place is open and today, I finally got a chance to come in during open hours. they have a lot of dark chocolate that is not very sweetened, but still very rich. I ended up getting some samples and then choosing 3 (one was eaten before the pic oops) of the milk chocolate and caramel. it has a perfectly hard chocolate with a melty caramel inside. highly recommend! read more

Bit pricier for gift boxes, but chocolates LOOK BEAUTIFUL and FLAVORS ARE EXQUISITE. Gift boxes can be picked and are assembled and wrapped right in front of you. The chocolate varieties (i.e. pistachio praline, blueberry) are simple but seem to have an incredible amount of thought and consideration behind each one. Called and came in a touch after the 6pm closing time. Exceptional service and wonderful vibe, gentleman assembling the gift boxes was very sweet and even offered us each a sample. Both the blueberry and mango chocolates we were given as samples had subtle but exquisite fruit flavors. Chocolates look beautiful and make for wonderful gifts for special occasions. Delicious, locally handcrafted artisanal chocolates perfect for a gift or treat for a special occasion. Located on University in a small storefront, Chocolaterie appears very unassuming but is truly a Berkeley gem. I visited a few times in undergrad many years ago to pick up some gift boxes for friends and decided to stop by again for a truffle gift box for my graduate school mentor. You can either purchase in-person and personally choose your selection of truffles or order online and pick up the gift box. Though ordering online does not allow you to choose your truffles, their chocolates are all beautiful and you can't really go wrong with any of them. They're gorgeous and (almost) too pretty to eat ;) Their flavors are pretty unique as well, which makes eating the chocolates such an adventure. They have your classic truffles, as well as yuzu, chai, blueberry, and peanut butter jelly. Cost per truffle is very reasonable! I compared prices to other Bay Area chocolatiers and the cost per truffle at Chocolaterie is slightly lower than at competitors. read more

Received a box as a holiday gift! They're almost too pretty to eat Some yummy ones I tried so far -- hazelnut, PB&J, and tangerine! Hazelnut might be my favorite so far with the hazelnut and praline filling. The PB&J is a unique twist on a classic childhood flavor. Tangerine flavor was sweet yet bright! Can't wait to try the others. The box of chocolates was delivered to my house in a solid box. It had a little bow around the box and a small handwritten note with a message from my manager. We came to this little chocolate shop after lunch at Rose Pizza and it was such a nice experience! First of all, the owner is fantastic and offered us samples. The chocolates are really amazing and we immediately knew we were going to leave with most of the flavors after trying just a sample. I really liked the caramel, the sage honey and the yuzu habanero. Was looking for a local shop to buy artisanal chocolate for Valentine's day and Chocolaterie fit the bill. It's located in downtown Berkeley so parking can be a little difficult. The chocolates here are so colorful and beautiful. I also really enjoyed the unique artisanal chocolate flavors. My favorite was the lychee lavender. Chris is an ARTIST. Not to mention an absolutely gracious host. I came in 5 minutes to closing. He welcomed me with not one, not two, but THREE samples of fine chocolates. I accepted. :) Cardamom Caramel. Passion Fruit Caramel. Lavender Tea. Oh my. He airbrushes them. Like each chocolate is a model. And each chocolate is a model. For what chocolates should be. I bought two boxes. He gave me extras to go home with. I can't say enough about how much I love this establishment. Side note: I used to go to another Chris (Elbow) in San Francisco and find no need to travel dramatically to Hayes Valley for artistically made chocolates when this Chris is nearby. I will be back to buy more presents. They are gorgeous inside and out. Plus, he finds the finest ingredients he can from Monterey Market in Berkeley. Then, creates at an extremely high-craft level. The store does not see a high volume of customers so there is typically only one to two workers working the counter. Ambiance: 2/10 Limited window seating in a very small space- not the space to come meet up with friends or bring a book and hangout. I have been coming to this location for 4 years for your passion fruit caramels and never have I ever had such a horrible experience as last weekend. The young woman working was horribly rude! She pulled out her phone to text while we were trying to order, she was very abrupt with us when she did address us, and it was very apparent that we were an huge inconvenience to her. Additionally her physical appearance was concerning to me being that the chocolate are on open display and this is a place of food service, but her hair was a mess and she looked like she rolled right out of bed to come to work. Chocolates are not ***amazing***, but they are so, so pretty and quite unique. My favorite was the espresso, but all the others were also very rich and interesting. Lots of them have alcohol, which warms your throat nicely. And, I know I said this before, so, so, so pretty. Makes for a great gift, albeit a bit expensive. The employee who sold us the chocolates had a really soft voice and was very smiley, so I think we ended up buying more than intended.
