This place is so awesome. I've never seen such beautiful chocolate in my life. It's like an anime come alive. The finish is so smooth and shiny, even to the touch it looks and feels like a plastic display but the actual quality of the chocolate is amazing. I'm no chocolate connoisseur but the flavor is strong without being overbearing and texture is smooth after the initial snap of the outer finish. We were also given a free sample each! I got the chili one as a sample and my throat was burning it had such a kick I stayed down after . It was really good but I think I'll stick to normal flavors haha. We got 5 for $13, which is a steal considering we also got a sample each. Embarrassingly enough we didn't realize the empty middle walk through is so you can go to the other side and purchase their other items, you don't have to walk out to go to the other side. we looked ridiculous. One of the best chocolatiers in the Bay Area! What I really enjoy about this place is that the flavors are complex, ever changing, and quite nostalgic. While each piece is exquisite, some are more simple while others are quite daring. For example, I never, in a million years thought a celery and peanut butter bon bon would delight me but it did! Chocolate art! So we were walking from the hotel on Uni to the school when we passed by Chocolatier Blue. Looking at the artwork of the chocolate made us stop. Looking inside, we were oohing and aahing and looking at it- wow. Looks nice. The person manning the shop was trying to help us with what our selection/what we wanted; however, we were unsure if we wanted to get the chocolate that specific day. Samples though! They have samples! Cookies and cream was good, they had a chili one as well that gave a lot of fire! The thing here is that some flavors aren't gonna be what you like and if you're not gonna like the flavor, you're definitely not gonna enjoy the chocolate. And this is gonna be those milk, dark, extra dark, white chocolate differences, these are all flavor differences. Their passion fruit caramel is good, but with more emphasis and oomph on the passion fruit. They have a lot heavier tastes, if that even make sense. Here at Chocolatier Blue, they have decently priced chocolate at $1.50 per piece without the a box. I love their chili chocolate which is actually decently spicy! I've tried other pieces such as their peanut butter crunch, espresso, caramel, and lemon. Most of the flavors that I've tried I've liked because I tend to stick to nutty flavors which is always a safe option. The workers are always polite and helpful-- just ask and they'll explain any of the flavors to you. They have some chocolates that they've made with alcohol which is on my list of things to try, but if you want some safe options, caramel, pistachio, and peanut crunch are quite delicious. If you want spicy, get the chili! The decor is simple-- they have a couple seat, a station for complimentary water, and they have some dried out cacao beans as decorations. Their glass case showcasing the chocolate shows a beautiful array of different colored shells of chocolate along with a name tag. This place has a mind-boggling variety of flavors (and colors) of chocolates. They taste great - simple, not complicated, and representative of the flavor they claim to be. The place is neat and is very pleasant to walk into when you take a happy stroll on University Avenue. I will probably be going back several times. I will also probably ask them to ship some of their aesthetically beautiful chocolates, which I think will make for perfect gifts! My go-to place in downtown and South Berkeley if I need to get chocolates for someone! I've come here four times, either getting the box of 5 chocolates for $13 or the box of 8 at ~$20. These have been the perfect gifts as a thank-you to a professor for a letter of rec or when I met my boyfriend's parents for the first time! The chocolates are beautiful - they almost look fake, with the gorgeous finishes. They're super colorful and make for a very aesthetically pleasing gift! The espresso and caramel are my favorites, but all of their flavors are top-notch. The employees here are for the most part, pretty helpful. I do remember one specific time I came in when the employee behind the counter was kind of rude and disinterested, but once she realized I was actually going to buy something, her attitude completely changed. I usually ask the employees to curate a box of their most popular flavors. They have the informational card tucked in there, which is nice. Something I'd recommend for Blue's is to carry things like greeting cards in the future! This place is a hidden gem in Berkeley. I have walked past this cute little shop multiple times before I finally decided to step in. The shop offers a selection of adorable artisanal chocolates and some hot chocolate. The employee who helped me was very friendly and offered me a sample before I was swooned by the quality of the chocolates. I bought small box of 5 pieces for $13 as a gift for a friend (but ended up keeping for myself mwahaha). I bought a raspberry dark chocolate heart, lychee lavender white chocolate, hazelnut, grapefruit rosemary, and peach white chocolate. I loved how neat the packaging for these chocolates looked and I would totally come back to buy gifts for friends, colleagues, coworkers, and professors (or even for myself when I feel fancy). One thing I noticed, however, is that the card with the images and flavors that comes in the box (so you know which flavor you are eating) does not match the flavors they are currently selling. I hope that this gets fixed soon, as it would be disappointing to bite into an unexpected flavor. Chocolaterie is a wonderful experience both in person and online. Their shop on University is adorable and I am glad I didn't give up my struggle for parking to visit. I picked out chocolates for my partner and a friend and everyone gave their chocolate high marks. For the holidays I shipped sweets from their online shop to my family, who immediately contacted me to proclaim they were 'delish!' and 'the most beautiful box of chocolates ever.' The shipping was also fast and reliable. Fantastic experience all around. This is a small little chocolate shop located next a delicious Brazilian restaurant. The girl that help us was super sweet. All of chocolates look so beautiful. It's as if they're hand chiseled from colorful marble. The PB crunch had all of the right crunch, but I ended like how some of the peanut butter got stuck in my teeth. I am a choco-fiend. I spent a year and a half of my life as a chocolatier. I am a chocolate snob. I've gone to multiple chocolate festivals. I will argue the merits of dark chocolate until the other person gives up or gives in. Needless to say, I went in here with high expectations. Expectations were met. Chocolatier Blue has been around for a while, but sadly, has always been closed when I thought to come out to curb a sweet tooth. The chocolatier behind the counter was friendly, funny, and very helpful. The shop itself is small, cute, clean, and of course, blue. There are little areas to sit and enjoy your chocolate. After a short conversation, I learned that there is also a location on 4th street, and that all chocolate pieces are made in house. I noticed a bunch of fresh strawberries on the back counter, and asked if they dip strawberries in chocolate. She replied that they use them in the strawberry pieces. THEY USE REAL STRAWBERRIES IN THE STRAWBERRY CHOCOLATE PIECES. Ok, I am beyond impressed. I settled on a five piece box ($10) because I wanted to get a good sample of their work but didn't want to blow tons of cash on chocolate pieces. Here's what happened: Hazelnut: Milk chocolate and hazelnut is one of my favorite pairings, and this did not disappoint. A smooth ganache encased in a solid milk chocolate shell. Caramel: Not a runny caramel or a hard caramel, but a soft creamy caramel. High quality and delicious, definitely worth a taste due to the rare consistency of this caramel. Cherry Limeade: I love cherry limeade as a drink, but had never gotten to try it as a chocolate piece. This is insanely good, and not too tart (which could have easily happened). Rhubarb: OMG. This was impressive. There was the great tart consistency of fruit (REAL fruit) as well as graham pie crust within the chocolate shell to give the true feel of a rhubarb pie. Very well executed. Smores: Wow, I am impressed. Marshmallow can often taste cheap or easily done, but this maintains a certain consistency that is associated with smores. Absolutely delicious. Each piece is a work of art and is hand crafted not 20 feet from where it is sold. Absolutely worth the splurge (as chocolate almost always is in my book) and would make an excellent present for your resident foodie or sweet tooth. read more

From connections here and there a box of Chocolatier Blue chocolates arrived at my door today safely packed and cooled. The gift box was impressive and would make a great Christmas gift for those of you shopping early! Inside we found the following five items: 1. espresso - organic espresso steeped into fresh-farm cream, organic butter, and milk chocolate 2. passion fruit caramel - fresh new zealand passion fruit, fresh-farm cream, organic butter, and fleur de sel salt to make a creamy caramel 3. tangerine - fresh local tangerine zest and juice blended with milk chocolate 4. lemon - fresh local lemon zest and juice blended with milk chocolate 5. lime - fresh local lime zest and juice blended with milk chocolate 6. egg nog - a creamy custard ganache with nutmeg and clove I am very impressed with many things about Chris, the Chocolaier. Foremost is the ingredients, he uses the finest fresh and local ingredients. There are no artificial flavors, extracts, compounds, preservatives, or purees in his chocolates. The cream is farm fresh. Because of this, the chocolates only have a 3 week shelf-life. The fruit flavors are bold but not overpowering, very complimentary to the chocolate center. The outside shells are pretty (yes, I liked that too). My favorite? The espresso. It was like eating a coffee drink. I didn't think I would like the lemon or lime chocolates but I did. I was surprised how much flavor is in the center of the chocolates. I saved the passion fruit caramel for last. I LOVE caramel. But it was disappointing. I expected the caramel was not as hard as I expected and I didn't like the passion fruit with the caramel as much as I thought. It didn't work for me but others will like it! If you get a chance to stop by and try it, just pick up a chocolate as a treat. You won't regret it. read more

Rainy day, lazy day, hump day (with no hump for us retirees), with nothing special on the agenda for our last day in Northern California (for a while). Why not put on some more pounds so we have something more to work on at the gym when we finally arrive home from our 3 week eating frenzy in 5 states? Brilliant idea! That means we came to Chocolatier Blue, just to say we did. And we did get one sample first...espresso...which exploded as I took my first bite. Chocolate and coffee, the perfect duo, a marriage made in heaven. So we bought 2 espresso, one hazelnut, one dark chocolate, one peanut butter cookie, one caramel, and....I forgot the last one....and happily dished out $12 for the indiscretion. And then we hopped, skipped and jumped right next door to their sister store, A Dora Pies. It was awful. Simply awful. The awful part was..... leaving. read more

This place is so impressive I absolutely had to share how wonderful this chocolate shop is. The caramel with cocoa nibs is heavenly. It's not like any caramel I've ever had before. It's light and almost fluffy, not dense and gooey. The cocoa nibs add just the right amount of crunch and bitter to offset the sweetness of the caramel. I am such a sucker for fresh made chocolate! I came here by accident when I was returning some things to Comcast. All I could see were a crew of people making chocolate and not the stuff you find at the mall, but gourmet items. Each piece is hand crafted and are beautiful to look at. I can not go into how great they taste. Each one is unique in flavor. The lady in back of the counter even let me sample one. That was it! I am now hooked. The location is small and if you blink your eye you might miss it. They have interesting flavors such as mango, salted caramel, peanut butter and jam and a bunch of others. I've been a yelper for quite a few years now and I've received a lot of good, bad and ugly responses from business owners but this experience definitely trumped all. It's refreshing to find a business owners who not only take negative feedback (though I didn't think my original review was exactly negative) and try to turn the experience around. Bravo! I got another pretty blue box the very next day along with a box of turtles. Again, the quality of the chocolate is still great but unfortunately, I felt the same way about them. I really enjoyed the turtles though and I decided to upped my review by 1 star for incredible the customer service. read more
