The first time I visited Chocolatier Blue, I wasn't planning on buying anything. I just strolled in to look around, and the service was quite wonderful. The chocolates didn't even look like chocolate. They were so shiny and perfect, almost like plastic. Even though I said I didn't intend on buying anything (I was on my way to class and was a bit early), the lady working there was very kind. She explained what everything was and let me try 3 of the chocolates. I didn't particularly like them, but I decided not to review because I only had samples. A few months later, I coincidentally received a box of 30 chocolates. Having tried what was nearly one of everything, I have to say I was slightly disappointed by the quality. All the chocolates I had were very similar to each other: a hard chocolate shell with a liquidy filling. Maybe I've just been spoiled by CocoaBella's Swiss and Belgium chocolates, but the chocolates were also very very sweet. Even their dark chocolate tasted more like milk. I wish I could give an 3.5, because I really enjoyed the service, but there's no option for that. If you like your chocolates to be very sweet, you will adore this place. If you prefer a more bitter chocolate, or perhaps don't like fruity fillings, you may not enjoy it as much as others. read more

I realize that this is a chocolatier and not an ice cream shop, so I will adjust my expectations. After a lenten sacrifice of ice cream, my boyfriend was ready to stuff his face with some ice cream on Easter Sunday. We chose chocolatier blue as our first taste of ice cream after my friend suggested it. (If you're reading this, Joan, I'm sorry we didn't love it as much as you do!) We sampled almost all of the flavors, and I let boyfriend choose which ice cream we'd split in our cookie sundae. He chose vanilla bean. Our $6 sundae came with a chocolate chip cookie bottom, a generous scoop of vanilla bean, and a sprinkling of brown sugar crumble. I expect vanilla ice cream to be extra creamy than other flavors because it's the "simplest" ice cream, but the vanilla bean here was underwhelming. I saw flecks of vanilla bean, but the vanilla flavor was lacking. Also, the cookie at the bottom was overcooked for an ice cream accompaniment (should be soft) and couldn't be broken with the plastic spoons they gave us, so we were struggling to eat both the ice cream and cookie at the same time. We ended up just finishing the ice cream and throwing out the cookie at the end. read more

Looking for Asha Tea down the street, we discovered this cool little chocolatier shop. Upon walking in, you actually notice the chocolatiers in the back mixing the ingredients. As well as notice all the racks, full of chocolate trays. But upon looking through the glass you see these beautiful, fancy, and artsy style chocolates; Nice and shiny too. Chocolates with a chrome polish is what some of them look like. The guy at the counter greeted us, and seemed to have some knowledge about each piece. As you bite into one, the pieces are soft, not overly sweet, and very very satisfying to the palate. With other pieces, you can bite into one, and have a second flavor hit you again. If you're looking for something different, I recommend giving this place a try for yourself. I personally think a box set of these would be an excellent gift idea, and would make anyone happy! read more

The atmosphere is very nice. I like that the cocoa plant was laid out so that you could see these chocolatiers are using really fresh ingredients. The chocolates were very nicely displayed. I sampled the strawberry chocolate. It was so delicious. I picked four different flavors : Cookies and cream, honey sage, raspberry and peach. They were so beautiful , that when my daughter opened the box , she didn't even know they were candy. She thought they were small metal toys. Each chocolate was delicious. I have to say that I'm no chocolate fiend but this place is impressive. The quality of the dark chocolate is very high. Amedei + Clover Clove = Magic. It didn't really matter what was in the half dozen that I tried. They were all excellent. I'm generally into dark chocolate for the bitterness/smoothness combo factor and it doesn't get much better than this. Chocolatier Blue crafts exquisite looking chocolates out of high quality ingredients. There are always strange sounding chocolates and yet if you give one a try (and you probably will since the owner is quite nice about handing out samples), you'll find that the flavors work surprisingly well. The centers melt so smoothly too. The store also sells Amedei chocolate bars and a couple other brands. To be honest, while I find the chocolates visually eye-catching, they're not really my aesthetic (too much sparkle and color). Still, they're quite impressive to look at. I also take issue with their gift box packaging. Chocolates are $1.50 each, quite reasonable I think, but if you want to buy 5 chocolates in a gift box, they are suddenly $2.00 each for a total of $10. They currently have a whole range of "aphrodisiac" chocolates themed for Valentine's Day. While I don't really trust their claim regarding the champagne and popcorn chocolate ("buttery popcorn entices men"), I certainly do trust that you can make someone happy with a gift from here. read more

Just an update. Last night I went to Chocolatier Blue's First Annual Chocolate Festival and had a great time. With the purchase of my ticket I was able to try six chocolates, a dessert, truffles and a great hot chocolate. With the cool evening, the hot chocolate went down great. I don't understand another reviewer 's description of the this cup, for me it can only be described as liquid bliss. Of coarse the chocolates were excellent. My favorite still being the lemon followed by the dark chocolate. The festival was small and low energy, which was nice. I only wish that the proprietor, Chris, would have been able to mingle with the crowd more and not have had to work serving. Can't wait until next year. BTW: I would have called it the inaugural, not the first annual, but that's just me. read more

My favorite is the orange flavor, but even the chili flavored hot chocolate was tasty. I've also tried their coconut almond bar. Blue's Chocolates is a small little chocolatier shop by the UC Berkeley campus that specializes in handcrafted dainty little chocolates that are perfect for a gift! They stock a variety of different flavors of chocolates which range from fruity to tea based flavors. The staff here do a great job in explaining all the flavors and size options which made the experience of purchasing a box seamless, enjoyable, and an overall pleasure. For a college student, it can come off as being quite pricey, but with little bits of sacrifices here and there, it's really not that bad. The various colors and shapes of the chocolate pieces placed evenly throughout their box is a delight to the eyes. The silky smooth chocolate that simply melts in the mouth is a delight to the tongue. Even though I personally would still prefer my 86% cacao dark chocolate, I've got to say that this chocolate is super good. Given the price and fanciness of it all, I would never buy a box for myself, but I would definitely recommend buying a box for a pleasant surprise of a gift! read more

Amazing amount of varieties. All gorgeous and daintily presented in their little glass houses. It's a little Willy Wonka-ish. I was expecting Gene Wilder to pop out and start singing. I think I would selected a few different flavors next time and I agree, I didn't really get the corn taste. And it's true, the centers make them a little difficult to share. We first heard about Chocolatier Blue from an article in the Chronicle. We hadn't noticed it despite the fact that it's just a couple of blocks away. It's been one of those places that sits in the back of our minds since then... ... Until my boyfriend decided to get his father some chocolates for the holidays. He bought a gift box of 5 for his father, and bought us 4 to share. The four we had/have were/are passion fruit caramel, espresso, lemon, and grapefruit. It put the past and present tenses because we've been eating them slowly to savor their tastes. As soon as we got home we ate the lemon which was pretty darn good. Our choice of lemon came from the recommendations of other yelpers. The passion fruit one... well, let me try it now... Mmmm... pretty good. At the first bite I thought "mer. too much caramel" (I don't care for caramel too much). But when you let it rest on your tongue and melt the passion fruit flavor comes through and blends wonderfully with the chocolate and caramel. As for the other two, I don't have an opinion yet as I've yet to try them. But based on the previously eaten chocolates I'm guessing they're not going to be bad at all! read more

Visited the shop when I was around the area. The shop is very small but clean and has a boutique feel to it. Parking is horrid, don't even try. The chocolate is beautiful, but i'm not sure that I want to pay the price for the chocolate. I don't think that the chocolate is so good its worth the price, I am price sensitive as it comes to chocolate- given the huge market that exists out there already. Though I have to argue that the design and color is good. If given the choice - I would do see's candies for the 1lb chocolate. read more

OMG. I've had wonderful handmade chocolates before, including the famous Vosges and chocolates in Belgium and Switzerland, but I think these are the best I've ever had. My husband bought me a box (which he shared with me), including passion fruit, caramel, butterscotch, dark chocolate, and red wine. All delicious. I can't wait to try the rest of their flavors. He also bought the truffles, which I thought were good (and he loved) but not as good as the chocolates. I thought the flavors and the texture were AMAZING. I think the chocolates here are a little pricey as they are $1.50 per piece, coming in a variety of flavors like Maple Syrup, Chili, Pear, etc. The lady that works there said that her favorite was the Chili flavor one, but that recommendation didn't really go too well with me. She also recommended the Maple Syrup flavor..I thought it was only okay, when she gave me the sample, but then again , I am not much of a chocolate person. I love Chocolatier Blue. Their chocolates are not only pretty, but they taste SO good too! I first had them 1.5years ago, and I fell in love the moment I tasted them. My favorite is Palet d'or - the dark chocolate kind. I love everything from its appearance, the feeling when I get when I first bite into it, as well as the deep after taste. I'm a fan of dark chocolate rather than milk, so maybe that's why - if you're not into dark chocolate, you might want to try other ones. Espresso is also good, so is the Passion Fruit Caramel. It's definitely more expensive than ordinary confectionery you can find at supermarkets, but trust me - It's worth it. They also have a shop down at 4th street, in berkeley. I think they sell ice creams at the 4th street location - I haven't tried it, but I look forward to trying them tomorrow when I go! read more

Quite good. And very nice-looking chocolates. Stopped by while exploring downtown Berkeley one Saturday. The woman behind the counter was nice enough to provide us a full-sized sample of the expresso. We also tried the blackberry, strawberry lime, the caramel and the 75% dark chocolate (my wife chose the first two and I chose the second two). The winners were the caramel and blackberry. Next stop on our Berkeley tour, Chocolatier Blue! I had tried some of their chocolates before, so I actually came here not expecting too much, but going to their store totally changed my mind. When my friend brought me some chocolates to try last year, I only had tried 1 or 2 flavors and although the chocolate itself was good, I felt like they were generic flavors. It's a very simple storefront and set up. The decor reminds me a little of a baby's room. Thick baby blue stripes painted all around. The guy working that day was super helpful, friendly, totally accommodating and took the time to explain everything to us. How they made the chocolate, what ingredients he was adding when he was making my friends' hot cocoas. We came in a group of 14, so it took a while to get all our orders in, but we had time to kill anyway. I took a look at all the flavors and I really liked what they had on display. Lots of interesting flavors: ants on a log, caramel popcorn were the ones that stood out. I tried their chili chocolate, and it left a nice kick at the end. I ended up buyinging an orange chocolate bar ($6), and a cherry and pistachio bark ($5). Both delicious. I liked the mixture of salty and sweet in the bark, and there were chunks of orange peel in the chocolate bar. YUM! read more

on the way to a restaurant, hubs and I walked by this place and decided to check it out. Being pregnant, I've been having chocolate binge lately so I was happy to find this store. We tried a variety of their good-looking chocolates and took it home to criticize. Being a pastry chef and having a husband who's critical with food, we like trying new chocolate flavor and put in our 2-cents. The first think you need to know, Chocolatier Blue truffles are simply beautiful to look at. You will enjoy picking them out. You can't go wrong if you do it visually, or by flavor. The latest truffle collection is all about breakfast. I was really delighted with my caramelized banana and lemon poppy-seed offerings. Those two flavors, along with blueberry pancakes, sunflower & orange marmalade, French toast, and cinnamon roll made up the six pack I took home to my Mom for Valentine's Day. I didn't eat them myself, but the fact that they are gone and I didn't get any speaks volumes. She only eats candy sparingly these days, and will leave anything she doesn't think is delicious to linger (and linger) until I either eat it myself or throw it away. No need for that here. I wish I had picked up some of the other breakfast-themed flavors like mimosa, maple-glazed bacon, and coffee and donuts. I probably will just as treat for myself sometime soon.
