I placed a to-go order, including Ikura sushi. While eating it at home, I actually chewed into a piece of foreign material that appeared to be Styrofoam and had to spit it out. I immediately photographed it and have video documentation as well. What happened when I called the restaurant was just as concerning. I spoke with a man who identified himself as Phillip/"Philly," the manager/GM. When I explained what happened, his response was: "Ahhh, that happens." I asked if he meant this happened often. He then said no and responded, "You know what I meant." He also told me he could refund the sushi "if you want." I told him I didn't understand why I was being asked whether I wanted a refund after literally chewing foreign material in my food. Again, he responded, "You know what I meant." While I was trying to explain why I was upset and why I felt this should be taken seriously, he repeatedly talked over me and ultimately hung up on me. I immediately tried calling back, but the phone would not go through. This is not about a refund. It's about finding foreign material in food and then having a manager respond to a serious complaint in a way that I found dismissive, interrupt me, and ultimately hang up. I am sharing the photos because I want customers to see what I found and make their own informed decisions. I am not claiming to know how the material got into the sushi or that this happens routinely. I am documenting what happened to me and exactly how my complaint was handled. I expected concern, accountability, and an investigation--not "ahhh, that happens." NOT OK!!!!!

The hostess told me she would check with the chef. She went to the back, returned, and told me that yes, they could prepare ramen for me with a broth that did not contain soy. Based on that assurance, I ordered the ramen and subsequently ordered it two more times. Each time, I clearly stated that I had a soy allergy, whether ordering online or by phone. At no point was I told there was a problem or that the broth contained soy. Today, I ordered the ramen again and picked it up, only to find a note taped to the order stating that all of their broths contain soy and that they had tried to call me. I called the restaurant because, understandably, I was extremely confused. I explained that I had specifically asked about the soy content from the very beginning, that an employee had checked with the chef, and that I had been assured the broth could be made soy-free. I have now eaten this ramen on multiple occasions believing it was safe for me. That is not a minor mistake. Food allergy information needs to be accurate and consistent. I am fortunate that I did not experience anaphylaxis as a result of the previous meals I was told were soy-free. To make matters worse, I was not refunded for the ramen I purchased today and cannot safely eat. Instead, I was told I would need to wait until Thursday, when the manager is available, to have a conversation about a refund. Today is Tuesday. I cannot recommend Sushi Oban to anyone with a food allergy of any kind. When a customer specifically discloses an allergy and staff consult the kitchen before assuring that customer that a dish is safe, the customer should be able to rely on that information. The inconsistency here is both disappointing and potentially dangerous.
