Honesty. It's not just the best policy, it can make all of the difference, especially where food allergies are involved. I have a gluten sensitivity, and yes - I can't have wheat, or regular soy sauce. No problem, I know that, am am careful when eating out. What is less well known is that the fake crab mix tends to use wheat as a binding agent to keep all of the little fake crab meats mushed together, and that makes for a really gross (and frankly extremely unpleasant) aftermath once I've ingested said allergen. All this is to say, most sushi restaurants specify "krab mix" or "krab" or something like that to indicate that it's the cheaper version. Great! This restaurant uses the word "crabstick" - I also understand what that means. Fake crab without a GF notification - got it! I will pass on that. What I don't understand that while THEY DO SELL REAL SNOW CRAB, there's a little TWIST, my friend! Sorry to say - the SNOW CRAB HAND ROLLS ARE A LIE! I called them, and they even admitted this all to me over the phone. Because said handrolls made with *fake* snow crab, you see. You know, the kind that uses wheat as a binding agent? The kind that would send me unwittingly to the porcelain throne in extreme discomfort and misery for several hours? How could you have known that they were lying to you, I hear you ask. That's the genius move on their part! You couldn't possibly have known that until it had already been paid for and delivered! How is that their problem outside of this overthought review, you might also wonder? Well, it isn't their problem, it's mine, because I just had to throw my whole perceived dinner in the trash. I normally don't feel the need to leave reviews like this, but I was honestly pretty underwhelmed. While the selection of rolls was good and there were a lot of options to choose from, the overall experience just didn't match the price point. Everything felt really expensive for what you get. Paying over $4 for just a couple small pieces adds up fast, and we ended up spending around $80 for two adults and a 5-year-old with no drinks, which feels pretty high for a casual sushi night. The food itself was hit or miss. The kimchi was a bit off, and the mussels, even when ordered fresh, came out cold which was disappointing. The biggest issue, though, was the wait system. It felt really unorganized. We saw multiple couples walk in and seat themselves at the bar while several families who had already checked in were still waiting outside. We have been ordering from Sushi on Tatum for years. Our family still calls it "Sushi Station" which was the original name when it opened. They are friendly, sushi is good, it's fast, it's fresh, price is right! They always give plenty of chop sticks, soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger with take out orders. They also have chop stick cheaters for the kids if you ask. The kids also like to dine in because they like the revolving sushi bar. They time how long it takes something to go all the way around which keeps them busy. They also love stacking the plates and color coordinating the dishes. They don't have all the rolls we order for take out on the revolving bar so we just order those from our server. My son also loves their kids chicken tempura and gets extra sauce. My only wish when dinning in is for them to bring the plates for soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger sooner bc my kids start grabbing rolls, but don't have everything to start eating. They have some great "Special Rolls." We love the Phoenix, Hawaii, Texas, and New Mexico Roll! I guess we have a thing for cities and states, Ha! I'm a HUGE salmon skin lover. Eat it every day. Always order it when I go out to eat at sushi restaurants (or order takeout / delivery). This was the first Tim ever ordering from Sushi on Tatum and I'm always a little skeptical because sushi restaurants have like 3 ways of preparing salmon skin and more often than not, they prepare it poorly. Welp, unfortunately, Sushi on Tatum's salmon skin was prepared "poorly"-- at least it was prepared one of the ways I am NOT a fan of. Tiny strips, scales on, smoked... And crisped up. The only decent thing about the salmon skin was that it did have a little bit of a crunch to it. Such a bummer. Also, the portions were TINY - but since the skin wasn't even all that good, did I really want more of it? The sashimi I ordered on the other hand was GREAT. Fresh. Flavorful. Really good! But unfortunately -- the salmon skin FAIL and the fact that my husband hated the sushi I ordered him too, we definitely won't be getting Sushi on Tatum again. read more

I haven't been here in years but I was excited to visit once again. I remember this being a favorite spot back in my high school and college days. This was the first conveyer belt sushi spot I tried so it holds a dear place in my heart. I love the concept of sitting down and immediately choosing what to eat. The colored plates (referring to the prices) is a fun way to do math and see how much you can eat. My most recent visit was purchasing a surprise bag from Too Good to Go (check out my Yelp collection of places I've tried from this app). I arrived a few minutes early but the gals working were nice and went to prepare my food. It was packed nicely in a container with pickled ginger, wasabi, and shoyu (soy) sauce packets. It was a great variety of sushi! Some fried (New Mexico and jalapeño poppers) and a range of rolls, several which had cream cheese - a personal favorite. I've never had conveyer belt sushi and I was very impressed with the selection, it looks small inside, but the layout and position of the belt is even and flowing allowing everything to work together Seating and is spaced well to have a conversation with your guests, with little to no intrusion. Hidden behind an office building in a strip shopping center across Tatum Boulevard from the Desert Ridge Marketplace, Sushi on Tatum offers sushi as well as a selection of Japanese and Chinese entrees in a very casual ambiance. You're welcome to order directly off the menu or grab the small plates as they pass by your table on the conveyor belt. It's a fun experience for folks who like to create a custom curated meal from a variety of appetizers, small plates (with only three or four pieces of sushi on each plate), and desserts. Although food is constantly rotating past your table, Sushi on Tatum isn't an 'all-you-can-eat' arrangement and I was amazed to see huge piles of dirty plates stacked up in front of diners on adjacent tables. The prices for each of the items on the conveyor belt are based on the color of the plate used, so it's easy to quickly determine how much you're spending on your meal based on the rainbow of dirty plates piled up on your table.. but it seemed difficult for some diners to keep in mind that it is an 'a la carte' pricing arrangement, not 'all-you-can-eat' for a fixed price. When my dining companion and I stopped in for dinner, we ordered a few rolls off the menu with our server because the items passing us on the conveyor belt didn't look very appealing or freshly made. We each ordered three or four small plates of 'Special Rolls' (with 3-4 pieces of sushi on each), which was plenty for two moderately hungry adults. My favorites were the Bay Roll ($5), comprised of krab stick, salmon, and avocado topped with tuna, eel sauce, and spicy mayonnaise, and the Big Boy Roll ($5), comprised of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail topped with scallions. Our meal definitely wasn't bad -- the service was acceptable, our sushi was served very quickly, and no one got sick - but it wasn't particularly innovative, tasty, or memorable enough of an experience to make a distinct impression on me. I'd give it 1.5 stars, rounded up to 2 stars for the sushi conveyor belt arrangement, and I'm not sure we'd make a trip back given the number of better options for fresh, innovative sushi in the area. PRO TIP: There's plenty of free parking in the shopping center. read more

Usually really like this place. This time, the chef missed the mark by being lazy. I ordered two (2) orders of Tuna sushi and three (3) orders of Seared Tuna. The server was super nice and went to put my order in. Then I watched one of the sushi chefs walk to the conveyor belt and grab three plates (orders) of tuna with ponzu sauce and re-plate them- obviously thinking I wouldn't notice. But... 1) I watched him pick up the orders and re-plate them- and even tried to hide the plates when he saw me looking and... 2) Tuna covered in sauce is much different than "seared" tuna. Huge difference. This lazy, dishonest move ruined my experience. What other corners do the chefs cut? The server is trying to remedy the situation the best she can- she's awesome.
