I am 34 years old and have been dining at Yobo since I was born--in fact, my family has been coming here since long before I was even a thought on this earth! When you walk into Yobo, you are greeted by a large portrait of Ms. Rocky. She used to walk around the dining area to ensure every meal was up to par, and she always entertained us as children. She is missed dearly. The ambiance is always stunning - you are truly transported to a different time. The food is consistently a 10/10. They offer traditional Korean dishes alongside a fantastic fusion of everything else. Their portions are generous and always come out piping hot. For appetizers, I highly recommend the egg rolls and crab rangoon (easily the best in town). For main dishes, the spicy nutty chicken, SiWoo Duck, and any of their steamed buns are incredible--but honestly, you can order anything on the menu and it will be amazing and you will mostly always go home with extras. Seasonal options are available and if the pumpkin soup is on the menu, get it. You will be sorry if you don't. Their drink menu is also extensive, featuring seasonal options that never disappoint. This is one of those forgotten time warps into the 1970s or 1980s which exists unabashedly changed ... a portal into a cooler and more eclectic time. When I was growing up, restaurants had unique theming and quirks vs. the same pinterest-inspired design tricks that you see today. What looks like an unassuming Japanese style rectangular building on the outside is nothing but inside. You are immediately transported to a (somewhat tacky, in a fun way) Japanese home on the inside with those late 1970s vibes. There are water features, like a small Koi pond, and a waterfall inside, which is full of fake cherry blossom trees and a dimly lit scene, complete with purple Christmas lights. Each nook and cranny is a little different and there are tables and booths set throughout, which are meant to put you in your own little corner of this interesting world of a cartoonish Japanese village. The food can be hit or miss, depending on your order and the delightful cheesiness of the decor matches the menu ... with a lot of classics from the 1980s, including American Chinese/Polynesian inspired appetizers. The eggroll here is the best I've ever had. It's enormous and freshly made. It's not the frozen and fried kind ... you can actually see the soft inner-egg later within its fried shell. It's full of chopped pork and seasoned perfectly. It comes on its own silver warning tray and is more the size of a small burrito than anything you'd pull out of a white cardboard container at a traditional Chinese restaurant. Get the eggroll. The tid bit platter is cool ... retro. The menu states that the crab Rangoon are the original recipe from Trader Vics, where the dish was invented. They are smaller than a traditional crab Rangoon, as we know them, and packed with a much more garlicky taste in their creamy filling. The sliced pork is not the dyed red rubbery strips we are used to ... but actual sliced pork with a nice BBQ taste, even with little sauce used. The fried shrimp was not my favorite, dry and bland. The main courses have a lot going on. Sauces, meat, vegetables. They are pretty big and the sauces seem homemade. The house specialties are unique and prepared thoughtfully, many with exotic flavours or strange combinations you won't find elsewhere. The sushi is also done well ... as if it was a real Japanese sushi chef. The staff is very warm and friendly. From the hostess, who could be a NYC fashion model, and makes an effort to seat each table away from other tables when possible ... to the waiter whom has been there for the decades I've been going there and I don't think I've ever seen him not smiling and laughing in all my trips. They play a mix of music with Martin Denny and Henry Mancini lounge classics being my favourite because it really makes like you feel that you are in a different decade. If you ever wondered what it would be like to dine at a fun place in 1978 ... you won't be disappointed. If you like modern and sterile, steer clear of this place. The Yobo is one of my favorites and I often take the long way, through 287 and 84 back to New England after visiting NY it NJ so I can come here. read more

I wanted so badly to love this restaurant but unfortunately our experience was a letdown and here's why ... Location: 5 Stars- located conveniently off 84 makes it a easy restaurant for meal while traveling. Standalone building with private parking lot. Decor: 5 Stars- nice Japanese decor, love the heavy wooden doors, the seating area with the bar and stone waterwall. Plenty of seating inside the restaurant with visible sushi bar, semi-private room, etc. Menu: 4 Stars- It has a lot of choices. The restaurant does advertise as Asian - Fusion so they have dishes from Korea, Thailand, Japan, Chinese, etc. Some rolls seem to be nontraditional. For example, a standard rainbow roll is basically California roll with various raw meat on the outside, theirs added cream cheese inside (which we are not a fan of). Service: 4 Stars - we came here on a Friday night and it was busy. We were greeted warmly by the receptionist and put our name down for a table. She told us we can wait at the seating area. The seating area also had a bar with seats, we decided to just eat at the bar instead. The bartender was new but she was so sweet. She couldn't answer some menu questions so had to ask. She did seemed overwhelmed and after we ordered, we waited a while (over 45 minutes) to get our food hence I deducted 1 Star here. Food: 2.5 Stars - This is where problem lies. I love food and I love Fusion, with that said, the fusion I experienced was not great. We ordered a brown sugar boba tea, it came quite delayed and was too sweet and the boba was hard and some boba did not cooked all the way so they were chewy. We also had a sushi dinner which came with miso soup, 8 pieces of roll (California roll), and 8 sushi pieces of chef-selected fish. The miso soup was another "fusion" example: as if clear broth mushroom soup had a baby with miso soup, this would be it... Except it didn't work well. My pallet was confused, the miso was overpowered by the ginger taste of the mushroom soup and it was missing seaweed but replaced with mushroom, tofu, and crutons (why?). I even double checked with the bartender to make sure we got the right "miso" soup and she confirmed. The actual sushi plate was ok, nothing to rave about. We also ordered a chicken pad thai. A standard pad thai is a stir fried rice noodle dish with peanuts, veggies, scrambled eggs. It's seasoned with dry seasoning so the dish itself is not very saucy. But their par thai was. A bit too saucy and tangy for us. It eats like a Chinese stir-fried noodles which typically are more saucy plus they also added shredded pork floss on top of the dish, which is a Chinese thing. Another dish that was nontraditional but not done well. All in all, not sure if we will be returning here as the food was disappointing. But perhaps the chef is Chinese and their Chinese dishes would be better? read more

We have been going to Yobo for decades. Literally for as long as I've been alive and I'm 40. Their egg rolls are legendary. Giant, delicious and unique. In the last 40 years, they have been consistently perfect. They also have fantastic sushi and great Asian dishes. The atmosphere is also so cozy and cute. First off, I will say that I love the funky atmosphere and kitschy Asian decor and the staff were all extremely polite and friendly. Unfortunately the lounge area smells bad. There is a waterfall in there that has a nasty moldy subway water smell emanating from it. The dishes we ordered were also quite nasty. The boneless "duck" recipe must be as follows: take roasted boiled rodent meat and shred like cheese, then place into rectangle shaped mold and deep fry until crispy. Slather with greasy salty sauce. The "spicy" noodle dish was swimming in a greasy tasteless sauce and all of the shellfish that came with it were cold. I would expect more for a $28 dish. The rice in the sushi was super mushy. I left feeling nauseous. So much potential but they need a new chef STAT. Won't be returning. read more

Friends invited us to dinner at this local spot and hubby and I had never been. We had multiple apps and each had dinners. The Dimsum -Siu Mai (pork) was delish, amongst other apps we had. I do love me some Yobo but when the new owners took over years ago. It has drastically decreased in quality. Although the sushi still holds a 5 star review but if you are thinking of ordering something from the kitchen I suggest you don't. The hibachi tastes as if it's bulk cooked in a catering hall. The chicken is dryer than shoe leather. Rule #1 never double cook already cut chicken! And always use fresh never frozen chicken! So that's why this review holds a 1 star rating. This was the WORST dining experience I've had in a very long time, might possibly be the worst. Let's start with the service... the older white lady that looks to be in charge of all the other waitresses is a brash nasty bitch. She has absolutely no customer service skills and needs to be shut down along with the restaurant. We didn't have a reservation so we were sat in the cold bar area where we were forgot about multiple times. The older white lady sat us back in the bar area, gave us one menu and told us to share because they were out of menus. I'm guessing silverware because we only got one set. My wife takes longer to scan a menu then I do so a let a few minutes pass before I went back up to the hostess table to see if another menu was available. At this point I'm almost trying to avoid confrontation with the old brash bitch, but of course she was right there when I asked, "we are full tonight, what can I tell you", responds the old brash bitch. At this point my wife sees I'm ready to lose it and ask me if I want to leave. At this point we were 30 mins in and decide to stay because we were starving. Finally it's time to order appetizers, at this point we are ready to order appetizers and the main course. I ordered the calamari, a sushi tower Crispy Jumbo Shrimp (Spicy Tangy Peking Style). My wife ordered a Kani salad and two shrimp tempura rolls, she was ready to eat as well. The calamari and chicken fried rice for my son came out first along with a small dish of seasoning for the calamari. It wasn't until I tasted the Calamari that I understood the reason for the side seasoning, it was beyond bland. I asked for spicy Mayo and was given half Mayo and half Sriracha in a dish smh. Finally, one hour after the appetizers came out the main course is served. This is where my wife and I become absolutely mind blown. My wife's shrimp tempura rolls look like they were dipped in eel sauce instead of the normal thin squeezed strips from a bottle. The roll tasted like it came from the seafood department in shop rite and was made the day before, my wife left what you'll see in the pics. Her Kani salad was just as gross, tasted like they mixed it with spoiled Miracle Whip. Neither of us had ever experienced such a poor tasting kani salad like this, and we've had our fair share from different places. See for yourself in my pics. Lastly is my meal... the sushi tower was probably the best thing out of everything served, still it was at best mediocre in taste. The jumbo shrimp were drenched in onions and their version of Peking sauce that I was told had some spice to it. No spice whatsoever, I had to ask for a side of chili oil to spicy it up. This was the hardest $90 I ever let go of. If my son wasn't with us, I would've told them to take all that shit back and then fought the old brash bitch (jk). The waitress did forget my spicy tuna maki rolls, but when i reminded her, so was very quick to get them and apologize for it, Rolls were very good, very fresh and i like drizzles of siracha sauce and mayo on top, plus 6 pieces for 6$ is very good for it, other place would have wanted more for those rolls. overall, it's amazing here for it, just be sure to be patient and remind them if something is forgotten. :) read more

My friend ordered the bulgogi plate and I ordered the Tang Soo (sweet and sour pork). The bulgogi was not traditional Korean style. The cut of the meat was wrong, the sauce was off and the kimchi that was served with the dish was hardly recognizable. My dish, the Tang Soo, was flavorless. For a second I thought I could potentially have COVID, however, I was able to taste my drink just fine and had tried my friends food. I hardly ate from my plate. Asked for it to go (so I could fix it at home and not waste food) and went to McDonald's after since I was still hungry. I cant believe I haven't reviewed yobo before! This has been my favorite restaurant for years! Much like everyone else I was really disappointed when they were under new ownership...BUT I was proven so wrong when their quality maintained and even increased. The decor is so inviting and romantic even. I love coming here for their yummy lunch specials and it's one of the few places I will also splurge for dinner. The quality is absolutely there. The sushi is fresh and delicious. The steamed buns are amazing. The waiter who regularly serves me has been there forever and he is nice and professional. I'm happy to say they also have very competitive prices despite the fact that they could charge more because of the high quality vibe and decor. Side note. This is what I would consider a nice restaurant to visit in person. I order sushi takeout in Newburgh all the time and I wouldn't do that here since they dont offer soup and salad with their lunch sushi special. I love yobo! read more
