My favorite backers shop in Boston for its authentic Chinese style breads and cakes. Not too sweet yet tasty and beautiful at the same time. Worth a try for their cakes! You'll like their freshness and lightness in taste. read more

People need to be careful. They tend to add extra charge to the final bill which is far more than what you actually ordered. Therefore, it would be good to double check your order. read more

If you want to grab a healthier snack alternative to let say McDonald's, go get yourself a bun. Not a hamburger bun but a bun. Most of the stuff here are priced as low as .70 - 1.75. Think of it as a dollar menu. =) Red bean mochi bun - First I've seen of it's kind. It was delightfully light and good. It has this 3 interesting layer combination. See, you sink your teeth into this soft bun exterior followed by a chewy mochi and finally the pasty red bean. Cool, no? Taro bun - Isn't all that amazing and yet not bad. What sucks about it is that you have to chew your way through to the middle to really taste the taro filling and there wasn't a lot of it neither. Maybe the ones I had are made a bit off? I highly suggest their chocolate bun. You'll be surprise by the generous amount of chocolate they stuff into this little thing . It's a yummy sugar rush and great for a needed boast of energy. I also recommend the sweet cream bun too. As for their cakes, I've tried their green tea and tiramisu. Both are bland and lacking in what they title it as. They sure do look the part of a cake but seriously not worth getting. I know that Asian stylized cakes are less flavorful than the typical American ones. They're more low in sugar and the frosting isn't tooth achingly sweet, yet they can be outright disappointingly bland for my taste. The buns are good but minus a star for their cakes. read more

Cash only. Good selection but not as great as China town. Pretty standard fare- solid red bean bun, but the price is right. Definitely worth a visit, always a nice snack to pick up. Most cakes are individually wrapped. read more

Not bad, I saw a lot of buns and bread typical of Chinese bakery but I haven't try them yet. The ones I tried are cakes. The first time I was there i went for their version of Tiramisu, and it was actually very good. It was fresh and everything was on point, sweetness level and amount of cream is just nice (compare to those "cakes" you will find in supermarkets... yuck). But for the second and third time, the cakes I got were sort of dry and stale. It seems that they have been sitting in the fridge for too long. The dryness did not just apply to the cake itself but also the cream and filling. During my second visit, I also tried out the cheese egg tart. It is good except the inclusion of dried coconut. I am not a fan of that. I don't think I will go back for cakes anymore, despite its super convenient location. read more

They have the best "Old Wife Pastry" - I'd make that my wife if I could ooooh! There is also this red bean + mochi bun that is super tasty and chewy. This is also my go to bakery for thick white toast - they just can't be found in grocery stores around here. Eating here is a treat! read more

This place is like a stolen memory from my childhood. This is the kind of bakery I grew up with, Taiwanese/generic Chinese. When i was a kid, my grandmother ate nothing but the baked goods found in this bakery and I also ate it every day, so much that i got sick of it. Now after stumbling into this little bakery, I nearly had a hemorrhage when I found a loaf of unsliced taro root bread. Don't forget to grab a tray and some tongs (provided to your left once you enter) and load up! I highly recommend the taro root loaf because it's mildly sweet and the bread is soft and fluffy. Once you slice it and stick a piece in the toaster for breakfast, you are guaranteed to have a wonderful morning. The custard filled pastry is the same as always, rich and filling, and the scallion bread is extremely scallion-y as always. If you have not tried the minced/flakey/tiny shredded (ro-song) pork sandwiches (i'm not sure what it is called in the bakery) it's a must for those looking for something out of the ordinary. Last thing I would like to note is that they have sun cakes. Oh my dear goodness they have sun cakes. It was a treat for me to get them as a kid and now I am going to buy trays of them. It is worth the grab just to try it out. It is an extremely flakey pastry with a somewhat chewy/tender inside that melts in your mouth. It is mildly sweet and just wonderful. Yi Soon Bakery, I thank you for existing in such a convenient location. *Cash Only and Cheap* Simply Marvelous. read more

Update: Tried their cookies a few weeks ago with a friend. Really awesome. They are not poisonously sweet. Robbed my friend of the whole bag of the cookies. (Yeah she bought them. I was just going with her. But.) ----- Just wanted to say thank you to the people working in the bakery. A few months ago I was having a sudden massive nosebleed on the bus (just couldn't get used to the dryness in Boston!) and got off immediately with my napkin running out. Yi Soon Bakery was right at the stop so I just barged in asking to use their bathroom. The bakers, who were just preparing to open for business, were a little startled by my presence at first. The bakers probably didn't speak English very well and didn't realize what I was asking for at first. The owner or manager (I assume) led me to their staff bathroom right away and told them "She's having a nosebleed" in Chinese. While I was rinsing and drying, one of the bakers knocked and asked if I was OK. She was warm and concerned. I felt bad cause I didn't have any money or time to buy anything. So at least from their bathroom, I could tell it was pretty neat, clean, and organized. And the people are nice and warm. I couldn't say anything much for the buns and cakes since I didn't have time to actually try anything there, but they smelled really good even to my blood-blotted nose!! --The other day another unfortunate situation like this happened again (should I ask a doctor? Or is it just too dry?), and this time I went to a bank. Their clerk just replied "Er, it is not a public bathroom." They are not even busy; there was no customer. I could understand her, though. Maybe she was worried I got some contagious disease. Still, I felt cold there and thought of the good people in this wonderful bakery. read more

I like their cake. Have bought once a birthday cake. Not as sweet as American style. I like it

i absolutely love taiwanese breads and pastries....those get five stars from me. but yi soon bakery gets three. two and a half actually...but i'm rounding up. i like the pastries at yi soon but they cost a little more and aren't quite as good as what you can find in chinatown. my major reason for docking stars is that their cakes are disappointing .i've ordered both individual slices of cake and a whole fruit cake from here on different occasions, and they don't taste fresh- avoid the cake. also, cash only. read more

Incredibly tasty baked goods. Light and fluffy taiwanese style cakes, great selection! I love the scallion pastries. Those are just so hard to find. read more

Green tea sheet cake for 20 was moist and I liked the red bean filling. The decoration was completely insane - the frosting was textured and colored so that it had a green mossy look, even though I had asked for them to make it appropriate for a baby shower (for a girl!). For some bizarre reason, they topped it with little tomatoes along w/ the fruit, which made no sense flavor or texture-wise. While I don't really like green tea cake myself, people who do seemed to think it was a good version. I enjoyed the red bean mochi bun (crisp flaky top and a nice moistness and chewiness to filling), the green bean egg yolk bun (very yolky, not much bean), and the Old Wife biscuits (sweet, flaky), but still have more I need to try. read more

They're fruit cake is pretty good! I was actually surprised the fruit tasted fresh, the whipped cream around the cake was light and fluffy, and the cake was as well. A small cake was $13 and I was glad the bakery was there when I needed to buy a birthday cake on the snap! They're baked goods are also always tasty and cheap. You can't really find anything like this around Allston/Brighton, except in Chinatown. :D read more

Mmmmmmm you can't help but appreciate some good buns when you see 'em! On the yums list: red bean bun with mochi, sweet potato bun, croissant toast. Oh and everything else too. Another plus is that Yi Soon is conveniently located next to Infusions. Pick up some boba while you're at it! P.S. They also sell beautifully delicious cakes. read more

Yi Soon makes some of the best Asian-style baked goods that you can get in the Boston area. I'm a big fan of their red bean (azuki) breads, including one that even has mochi baked right into it. It's also a great place to get birthday cakes. Every time I've bought one for a birthday party, it's been a hit! It may be pricier than a Costco cake, but it's well worth it. read more

I've been eager to come here for so long and am really glad that I finally did! I'm familiar with Korean bakeries so I used them to compare with the products sold here at Yi Soon, price and flavor-wise. I went in early afternoon and there were some empty shelves--still a lot to choose from. Everything's cheaper, portions are generous, and the wife's pastry and the coconut cream bun were delicious. The bun especially tasted like home as it had a texture very similar to cream buns sold at Tous Les Jours or Paris Baguette. It took me a while to appreciate wife's pastry, which seems to be a more traditional menu--I like the chewy texture inside but the flaky outside tasted a bit too much flour-y. I'd love to try out their lotus seed cookies and mooncakes next time. I agree with other Yelpers that customer service could be improved (nothing much but it'd be nice to be greeted with a hello at least?) read more

Not bad but then again I also grew up with Cantonese style pastries so some of the things seemed a little bland. I sampled many of the items and although I didn't like the mango mousse cake at all I was surprised by how good the tiramisu was. I do question how fresh the cakes are because they are refrigerated so they are able to keep them longer. I also had a few of the baked goods which were so cheap that I could have them for breakfast every morning. The person behind the counter wasn't that friendly but I would still go back just for the pastries. read more

i've been here a few times getting their gorgeous mocha cake and green tea cake. these cakes LOOK absolutely amazing. however, as far as the taste goes, they're quite bland and dry. both cakes had the same problem...rather than moist and soft, it was dry and not-so-soft. now, for some of you who aren't familiar with asian bakeries, their cakes aren't as sweet their American counterparts. they aren't loaded with sugars and other sweeteners. at Yi Soon, the cakes just weren't as flavorful as other asian bakeries. pricing isn't ridiculous...at $20 something per cake, it's comparable to those of Konditor Meister. again, let me stress that these are some good looking cakes fitting of a small birthday party for a loved one. onto other baked goods from them. their selection is typical...you have curry buns, red bean buns, egg custards, etc. they're not too shabby and a whole lot cleaner than most bakeries in Chinatown. just coming back from France and Spain where they have some tarts and pastries to die for, i saw a fruit tart behind the glass at Yi Soon which resembles like the ones in Europe. could this be? could an asian bakery in the Boston area replicate the yumminess of the French tart? i had to get one to try. $2 is steep but tart had strawberry, grape, peach, kiwi. first bite is disappointing on so many levels. the peach was obviously from a can, the crust of the tart was thick and opposite of flaky, and the cheese was waxy. took 2 bites and didn't finish the rest. to be fair, i had high expectations but it was plainly not good. conclusion - presentation is key to their success but if you want better tasting baked goods, you have other options like Crown Royal in Chinatown, Mike's Pastry in Charlestown, Konditor Meister in Braintree or Rosie's in Boston for cakes. I would even recommend Eldo's cakes in Chinatown over Yi Soon since they have special order cakes like Mango or the infamous Durian read more

I go here around twice a week to get buns for a quick breakfast. A couple of the kinds I've tried have been regrettable, but many are quite delish...and cheap! If you can get used to the idea of eating room-temperature meat and dairy, the curry and egg salad buns are pretty good. Otherwise, I stick to the cream bun (which has pastry cream inside), scallion cheese squares (only available on the weekend), egg tarts, and my favorite, caramel pudding cake. It's like creme caramel on top of angelfood cake. Amazing. read more

Got a birthday cake here recently, I'm always a big fan of Chinese birthday cakes as they are so light and fluffy and filled with freshfruits and whipcream topping! We got the "strawberry" cake, the overall cake was on-par with other Chinese cakes I've had...but I wasnt a big fan of the processed Strawberry jam between the layers though. read more

The red bean/mochi roll is bangin'! If I'm walking past this place, more often than not I am dropping $1.35. Check it out, y'all.

Love it! Recently discovered Yelp and have been reading ravenously to get caught up on all the good places to eat in Boston. Read a lot about this bakery and realized that I've been biking past it on a regular basis. Decided to actually stop in. It's a very cute, well-lit place that smells like a good Chinese bakery should smell. Prices are VERY reasonable and I haven't gotten a bad pastry from there yet. Everything is so tasty! Yummmm read more

this place makes me giddy and all tingly as soon as i step inside. as soon as i hear the bell i know i'm going to go pastry wild- but half the time- it's so late that most of the goods are all gone. wuuh wuuuh! this taiwanese bakery serves fresh pastries everyday and they can custom bake your cake too (with a price of course). my picks are always the same- a loaf of soft bread and pickled buns. but i guess i've been missing out on taro buns based on reviews. read more

We drove by here last weekend so I decided to give it a try. I picked out some of the cookies that came in a little clear plastics and I also bought some of the breads. The green tea cookies tasted terrible. They're chalky and no flavor. The other cookies also just OK. Nothing to rave about. The breads seem to be better but I don't think it's as good as the bakery in Chinatown. I definitely prefer the bakery in Chinatown much better. read more

I walked pass this bakery last week, so I went inside to get myself some breakfast. The place was tiny, but it was pretty much the norm for chinese bakery. I bought a bread with sausage, sweet potato bun, and an egg tart. The food was good even I ate them after two days of purchase. It was a bit pricey compare to Chinatown, but it was a good price to go for people live in that area. read more

I stumbled upon this place accidentally while drinking some fantastic almond bubble tea from Tea Infusions next door. I was delighted to find the authentic-looking pastries boast such wallet-friendly prices. The pastries and baked good were light, fluffy, and quite satisfying. Now mind you, Yi Soon is not a great way to ease a serious sugar craving. The goods are only lightly sweet, and particularly bready, but deliciously different from the ho-hum monotony of the western donut! read more

Aww Yi Soon. I think you could've been so good. The pancake part of your red bean pancake and your custard pancake leave a lot to be desired. And don't get me started on the custard - it's like firm whipped cream but tasteless. Your only saving grace was that the red bean paste was yummy. Yet to achieve said yumminess, the red bean had to be separated from the pancake. Le sigh. read more

Being born and raised in the south, there aren't many places where you can get authentic Taiwanese pastries. This place reminds me of the bakeries in Taiwan. Prices are great and everything is freshly baked. The only thing I wouldn't get here is the egg tart. They don't have the same flaky crispy crust like they have in Taiwan. Another downside to this place is that it is cash only. Overall not a bad place to go if you want to pick up some authentic Taiwanese pastries. read more

Really great bakery with tons of fresh options. I've been here a few times, and every time there's been an amazing selection to choose from. The pastries are fresh, and they aren't skimpy on the fillings. If you're going to buy a few pastries, they do have a $10 minimum for card. read more

This bakery sxcks!!! Fool customers!!! I ordered a birthday cake for my mom's birthday. The cake is so tiny and expensive. The worst is that we found out it was apparently a left-over from at least two week ago. It was not the Yam (Yu Tou) taste that I asked. The taste so horrible! Completely ruined the birthday party. This bakery deserved negative stars if the lowest one is not 1 star. read more

I bought a beautiful and fairly large birthday cake (on the cheap $22! WOW) garnished with berries and melon balls that seemed to be dusted with powdered sugar and fuzzy bliss. It had a strawberry glaze covering the fluffy yellow cake. It was called the "Fruit Cake". Happy Birthday, Mom. We did the whole song and candles. Right around when cake-cutting time was about to start. My cousin stopped the centuries year old ritual with, "Noo! The fruits are moldy!" The fuzzy bliss was mold.. and the powdered sugar was also mold in disguise. How embarrassing. To save the night, we drove in the flooding rain to the nearest Cheesecake Factory and bought another cake. Happy Birthday, Mom - Take 2. Perhaps I should've taken the red flag as a warning when several years before I've saw a ham/cheese roll with a dead fly inside the packaging on display. Seeing their cakes seemed more trustworthy.. I came back and had this experience. Don't let it happen to you. Check for mold and flies before purchasing here. read more
