A couple of friends and I went to YCs in Tempe and being first-timers, we wanted to learn more about their bar flow processes of arranging our Mongolian bowls. As someone that's used to having Mongolian BBQ, I know different restaurants flow differently. Here's what to know: * Diners pre-pay for their bowls (small or large) right at walk-in. Past restaurants I've gone to handle payment after dining so this was different. * You take your bowl and begin building it with the noodles and toppings you desire as you go down the line. It's pretty simple. However, here's where a newcomer can question something -- their house/specialty sauces. They are labeled on the bar glass overhead but the labeling can be confusing to see on the bar to know if/when you're choosing the right sauces and some sauces are or may be new to a diner that is not familiar with its ingredients. If you get stuck on this, just ask the staff to help you. * Personally for me, anytime I have Mongolian I always ask the cook to first clean the grills before cooking my bowl to ensure two things: (1) If someone has a topping that you either don't like or maybe allergic to, cleaning the grills beforehand helps you (AND) (2) It gives you peace of mind knowing your food is being cooked on a cleaned hibachi grill rather than mixing your bowl's contents with other diners contents and seasonings. Asking the cooks to clean the grills beforehand helps before they cook your bowl is not a burden to them -- they are happy to clean it beforehand. The restaurant has a dark aesthetic ambiance which might feel a little dull but there is outdoor seating depending on the location, so there is that option. However, separating this from the dining experience is key because the food is flavorful based on your own preferences. It's a great place to enjoy for casual dining. I have been a fan of YC's Mongolian BBQ for many years since the McClintock and Southern days in that repurposed Wendy's building. I have introduced many people to YC's as a reason to keep going back! Management has the flow of the line down to a science for the best possible results every time for a first timer or a YC's old timer! The cashiers watch the customer's as they peruse the line to be sure they do not have any questions or problems to make their experience subpar. The Chef's kiss of the customer service is the eagerness of the cashiers to be sure you mix your sauce for your bowl correctly or even make it for you. That is the make or break point of having a good bowl. The crew cooking your bowl is the second best part of coming here. Eating your bowl is obviously the best part YC's Mongolian BBQ! Once you are sent off with a piping hot bowl. You have a cafeteria style self serve line with white/brown rice, beef/chicken soup and crispy wonton chips. Next is the drink station along with the necessary tools to eat. The dining area is in a constant state of turning over tables of people leaving and new people sitting down. We met in Tempe for a family gathering and chose YC's for its convenient location. Parking was easy, and there was no wait when we arrived. The propped-open doors made for an inviting entrance. After paying, we headed to the line. An odd moment occurred when the cashier approached us as we were grabbing bowls; he mentioned it was his duty to remind us not to "compact" our food bowls with our sauce bowls due to health department rules. Despite that strange interaction, the rest of the experience was smooth. Our food was cooked quickly, the drink station was full, and the rice bar was well-stocked. They were out of soy sauce bottles, so we had to use packets instead. The staff cleared our plates promptly, and a young boy even came by to offer us fortune cookies. First time here and we decided to get the unlimited option. Honestly, it was pretty worth it considering the price, and you can change up the flavors of the bowl. I ended up eating 3 bowls + the soup bar! They give you wax paper to pack down your bowl, which is great. Even though the bowl looks small, it deceivingly holds a lot of food. They have meat, veggies, noodles, and a sauce bar for you to choose the flavor of your bowl. Although not authentic, a great option for customizing your own meal! Great variety of noodles, veggies, protein and sauces. Sometimes the grill Masters don't let the sauce soak up and the noodles are bland. When it's good it's good, I just try to add a little bit more sauce for them. We came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon, and it was busy but not overwhelming so. The host was friendly and helped us promptly. The food is done buffet style. You grab the ingredients (meat, veggies, noodles, and sauce), put them in a bowl, and then bring them to the cooks. They sauté/grill everything up and give it back to you ready to eat. The only potential downside is that if you choose a bad combination then perhaps you won't enjoy your dubious creation. This place is worth checking out though! read more

YC's was an absolute *staple* for me growing up, so you can probably imagine my glee when I moved closer to this location. First, the good: The service was impeccable. Fast, knowledgeable, and friendly. When I got to the end of the food line and was ready to put together my sauce for my meal, a very efficient gentleman asked me the flavor profile I was going for, and mixed my sauce for me. The food was very bit as good as I remembered. I ended up going with wheat noodles, bean sprouts, zucchini, beef, water chestnuts, and mushrooms (I belatedly realized I'd forgotten carrots) and it was the best. thing. ever. The sauce was perfect too - a little sweet and a bit zippy. It took virtually no time at all to go down the line and add ingredients to my bowl and the thin tissue they provide to pack the bowl with is really helpful. I also love how they cook the food on their giant woks right in front of you. Now, where there's room for improvement: The prices were muuuuuuch higher than I remember. My fella and I paid almost $40 - he got a large and I got a small. Granted, that includes an astronomical amount of food as well as a drink (and free ice cream!) it was still more than expected. The place was also very very loud. Plenty of seating available, but not terribly spread out and boy, does sound travel. All in all, the price being higher than I remember won't stop me from frequenting YC's. You do get what you pay for here, and the food is really really good. read more

Why did I not know about this spot sooner!?!? This place is a steal! I love a good noodle stir fry and I think I found my spot. For 20 bucks, you can get a large bowl and load it up as much as you want, and I mean load it up! They have chicken and beef meats as well as pork and fish for dinner. They have all the veggies and noodle choice. And then at the end you can crate your own sauce. Since this was our first time, the manager asked if we wanted help with our sauce, we said yes and he made a perfect sauce based on what you like! He was great! They also have rice and soup included with the price of your bowl, as well as frozen yogurt and a drink included. This place is amazing you can definitely get two meals, maybe even three depending at how good you are at stuffing your bowl. They had a great selection of options and you could add whatever you want to your bowl. I did the large bowl and paid 50¢ for a to go box. You can load up your bowl and they cook it for you. In Phoenix for the Billie Elish concert. Decided to stop in for some Mongolian BBQ before heading back to the airport. Delicious, fresh, clean and a wonderful service. The man at the desk (the owner?) explained the set up and helped me make the best stirfry of my life!! Not all you can eat like other Mongolian bbq I've gone to. But I prefer it this way. Tried Ycs for dinner with my daughter and overall had a good experience. They charge you for to go containers which I thought was a miss. People around us were stacking their bowls high. I appreciated the sauce combo recommendations and options provided. My daughter has an allergy and was able to notify the cook so that he would make sure the surface was cleaned and not cross contaminated with others orders. They have a mini self serve area for soups and rice, which was sub par. Ample seating inside. read more

All of the employees are so helpful, from the cook who added extra sesame oil for me when I forgot, the cashier who asked if I needed sauce recommendations, to who I believe was the owner who checked on us while we were grubbin & gave us to-go boxes. Every time I go here with my husband we have such a fantastic time. The manager is real nice and will chat you up with sports if no one is waiting in line (we try to come when it's not too busy), the restaurant is clean and wide open with several tables and booths, and there's only one rule with building your bowl: you can't let it fall off. Now, this takes some practice learning to line the bowl with meat and pack it down before creating your own jenga tower of noodles atop veggies in the middle and meat at the bottom, but then you get to create the SAUCE! My husband wanted to go to culinary school and just happens to be a better cook than me, so he usually helps me create a masterpiece of sauce that I can enjoy too because I have food allergies to pork and peanuts. :/ When you get to the counter where they cook, all you need to do is let them know you have a food allergy, and they'll immediately clean the grill so you don't get sick. They also cook everything in front of you, and give it to you once it's done. You can choose to leave a tip or not, but it's not required (though I recommend because they work hard and I myself used to be in hospitality). There's a small bar with rice, soup, and wantons, and there's a soda station behind it. They have 4 types of tea, and I live for it when I'm there, especially their raspberry. You can choose a booth or table, and this place fills up fast, so expect to choose an open spot if you arrive during busy hours. This is a family friendly place that comes with high chairs, but don't expect to order anything off menu because like the name suggests, this is a Mongolian Grill. You ain't gonna find no hacks or secret menu items. You get whatever they're serving in the bowl building line. Fantastic service, and the food is just as good in leftover form. Boxes to go are available, though you should be aware there is a small fee per box. Nothing outrageous, but something to know about. 5/5 every time we come here and would recommend!! read more

What really was the disappointment was how fast it was cooked, the vegetables were still very hard. I think they should slow down on the cooking process. Soup bat was not good. Price is fair. Being from out of state, this Mongolian grill was so different - in the very BEST way. It's one time through (not all you can eat) but they have thin paper you use to squash more food into your bowl lol! There was so much variety of items (even noodle types) and everything was very clean. The hostess asks your preference for sauces and she does it for you. Can I just say she nailed it for me?! This was the first Mongolian Grill I didn't have to stand in a long line scooting my bowl down the counter. Everything was quick and efficient. Ok so I went to YC's when they 1st came to Arizona. They were located off McClintock and Southern in Tempe, Arizona. We were craving Mongolian BBQ and went to a much more commercial spot. Not a good experience so we left. Thank you for the bad experience because I came to my friendly app Yelp and searched for YC to see if the McClintock location was still there. Well that location didn't show but a south Tempe location came up. YC took Mongolian to the next level clean and gorgeous. The customer service was on point. My friend and I were asked if we need help with our sauce it was amazing. Unlimited ice cream and soup. Drinks come with the meal. This is our Mongolian Spot and the other one we use to go to yup you can kick rocks. YC's Mongolian took your customers and made us feel welcomed. Every time I come here I have a dope experience! The food is so bomb and you can make your bowl as full and high with food. It's a flat rate to pay for food and drink.
