We grabbed a to-go order last night at Yats on Old Meridian. We needed fast, casual and inexpensive comfort food--and we got just that. We ordered crawfish etoufe and a 1/2-and-1/2 of crawfish etoufe and drunken chicken. All patrons, regardless of where you eat your food, place their order at the register and pick it up at the kitchen window. It took about 5 minutes to order as the person in front of us also waited and then had abundant questions before placing her order. At first, we thought there was just the one gal working because she had been in the kitchen when we walked in and left between orders. Luckily she popped right back and we saw that there was a second person in the back. We got the food home and were pleased to see that to-go portions basically mirror the plates in-house. Both dishes had good amounts of meat in their rich sauces, and two slices of seasoned buttered bread. We'd been to the Yats on Mass Ave a gazillion times and were glad to see that the one in Carmel is basically the same. read more

Yats is my go to, my ride or die. Their food is consistently incredible and has maintained their quality for the past 10+ years. It still tastes as delicious as the first time I tried it. I unfortunately no longer live in Indiana so every time I come to visit the fam I make sure I make several trips in. The chicken "mock shoe" is hands down my favorite, chipotle alexio is also amazing if you like something with a little more kick to it. The chili cheese is the OG amongst all my friends but I don't love crawfish so it's not really my cup of tea. Their garlic bread is so addicting. Your meal comes with two slices but go big or go home and get the extra side of garlic bread trust me. If you want to embark on a journey to flavortown this is the place to go. As a former resident of New Orleans, I was supremely stoked - and surprised - when Yats opened in Indy. Doubled down on that when the Carmel location opened, in addition to the original location, near my work! Six years after moving out of the area, I found myself back in Indy/Carmel for the weekend. On my Yelp app looking for locally owned eats for dinner, I saw Yats! The lightbulb when off! Of course! YATS! How could I have forgotten? The best Cajun food outside of New Orleans. We were in the car within one minute. Yats is a locally owned fast casual option where you choose from daily offerings posted at the order counter. The charm of the chalk board is part of the vibe. Create your plate and take a seat; your food will be delivered. You can taste a sample! On this outing, I had a child in tow for her first time at Yats. I told the guy behind the counter that junior does not like spicy food - well seasoned yes, but not hot. He pleasantly served up a sample with a smile. And he even allowed the lil lady a second sample when I thought she should compare and not just take the very first thing. As a result, she ended up with a half and half of Chili Cheese Etoufee with Crawfish AND Red Beans with Sausage. YATS IS kid friendly if you have kids that behave in a quieter environment. This is a place where you hear people's conversations and they hear yours, so crabby or loud kids would not be advisable for dine in. Carry out, yes. I always get Chicken Creole. Still as saucily delicious in 2015 as it was years ago. It's a tomato based mild winner that I can never turn down! The bread is as crunchy with the weird orange butter as it ever was. Not life changing but worth getting a double order of. I'd like to thank the gentleman working last Saturday night for getting us on the extra bread, and being very welcoming to someone new to this type of cooking. For $10 per person (with a beverage) you'll almost teleport to the Crescent City herself! Take your kids, take your coworkers, take anyone you can whether they have had this cuisine before or not. Updated based on 9/13/18 visit: 1) They have cans of Coke and Diet Coke for $.75 that I missed last time! Heaven! 2) The half portion is only $5, not the $5.75 amount I listed below. How affordable is that?! This is my husband's favorite restaurant, no question. He loves basically everything here. He tends to spice whatever he gets up further with their available spice shakers and make it truly his own thing. He went with a half and half of the Chicken Maque Choux ("mock shoe" is how it is pronounced) and Drunken Chicken. For $8.75, it's a great value to try some of their items and it's A LOT of food. I tried both before he dressed them up and I thought they were good. After he spiced them up to his liking, I preferred them less but it's not like they were bad dishes, just spiced to his liking. I usually get the full order chili cheese etouffee (served on rice-$7.75) and I'm always happy with it. I know they have other things on the menu, I just enjoy this one dish so much. I think it's spiced just right all on its own. I don't usually eat that much bread, but their bread makes me rethink that- I had two servings of it last time! Their butter blend they put on it is fantastic and accents any dish of theirs. It's not listed on their website that I can easily see, but they do have a smaller portion available-I think it was 5.75 or something like that? The standards they have are full orders and the half and half orders I mentioned earlier. If you think the standard full order may be too much food (there is such a thing, right?), try the smaller portion-think it's a half size. It took me awhile to venture over to Yats, considering all the locations in the central Indiana area. Yelpers rave about the quick, cheap, delicious eats - so much so that it's a Yelp top 50 restaurant in Indiana! Hence, I went in with high expectations. It was good, but I wasn't blown away like I thought I would be. This Yats is a bit bigger than I was expecting with a spacious entrance / ordering area. They've also got a nice (but small) patio area. Service was fast and friendly, and the food was ready in under 5 minutes. I opted for the half and half BNB (corn, beans, peppers) and white chili with chicken. Each dish comes on a bed of rice and bread w/ seasoning as a side. First off - this place, you get bang for your buck! The half and half is $6.75 and I couldn't finish my plate! I liked the chicken chili but it had a tad bit too much of a kick for me (I'm a wimp when it comes to spicy eats) and the BNB was good but not OMG delish. The bread was good, too, but it wasn't as life changing as some people make it sound (I've heard some call it "crack bread"). What turned this would-be 3 star review into 4 was the peanut butter pie. Sinful! Oreo (?) crust, with light and fluffy (but rich) peanut butter filling, topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate. WOW. What a way to cap off a meal! Other notes: ample street parking and large lot out back, but they share it w/ many other popular businesses so it can get crowded quick! I realized my initial impressions of Yats almost 8 yrs ago wasn't all that good, but after a few additional attempts, I've found my food there. I like my cajun food spicy and saucy so I've stopped ordering the dishes without sauces. Try the Drunken Chicken, Maque Choux or Crawfish Étouffée. Better yet - get half and half so you can have two meals in one. And don't forget their bread - it's to die for. Portions are humongous. Bit greasy overall but the flavor's worth that hassle. Taking carryout can be tricky because the sauce almost always drips all over the bag - another annoyance but not enough to stop going. read more

Simply put, this is one of the best Creole/Cajun meals I've enjoyed since NOLA many years ago. The Red Beans/Rice & Sausage was perfectly flavored and seasoned. Most folks think Cajun/Creole means hot. That the furthest from the truth. This class of food revolves around seasoning done right. My chili cheese etouffee with crawfish was perfect as was my Red Beans & Sausage. Yats offers plenty of ways to put heat into their dishes if you so desire but believe me it is not necessary. You'll want another serving of their cajun buttered baguette as well. Soak the baguette in what's left and enjoy. The only thing missing from this restaurant is chickory coffee. I've heard there are other locations through the Indy area and I have not tried them. Folks say this location is the best one. I guess I hit it lucky because I've already planned my return trip. It was nice to not have to wait long. The employee was very friendly and enthusiastic about the food. They offered me 5 different samples since I hadn't been there before! I enjoyed all of them that I tried!! That was a pleasant surprise for me. I ended up picking the Chili Cheese Étouffée with Crawfish!! I loved it. The portion was so large that I couldn't eat it all, so I took it home. It was still good the next day. I don't know what is on the bread, but that was so good too. I had a piece leftover as well. From Broad Ripple to IUPUI to Carmel... all of the locations have a great selection of cajun food. Some of the highlights... If you are going for the first time, I highly recommend starting with the Chili Cheese Étouffée w/ Crawfish. It's just wow. The Drunken Chicken is a spicy, herby flavor that gets addicting. Gumbo. Jambalaya. The Vegetarian and Vegan options are also dynamite... BnB, Spinach Mushroom Étouffée, etc. Each one a great mix of flavors. Oh, and I almost forgot... the bread. Double bread is a common order at Yats. Not sure of the buttery blend they put on it, but it is 100. Yats dining in experience is awesome. It's always incredibly fast... by the time you order, get a drink at the machine and find a seat, your food is ready. A lot of different spices and hot sauces for you folks that like to tinker.
