If I could give a 3.5, I think I would...but using the same scale I use for all of my reviews, this one gets a 3...for now.
We just dropped in for a quick late lunch. I think we got there around 3:30-ish (give or take) on Sunday and they were closing. I didn't think to check to see if they were just closing for an hour and reopening for dinner, or if they just served lunch on Sundays...but even still, we didn't get lunch menus.
We ordered the egg rolls, and per the server's recommendation, mango chicken (and white rice).
The egg rolls were for a quantity of 4. They were small, but tasty. They were not greasy, and the contents still had a freshness and crispness to them that I like. The wrappers were thin, crisp and flakey. The sweet and sour sauce was pretty "meh"...not the worst I've ever had, but your typical red jarred sauce, I think.
For Burmese food on the peninsula, Minglaba on Burlingame Ave is my yardstick. Since I'm not a huge fan of Mango, I've only had the Mango Beef to compare to this Mango Chicken.
I liked that Yangon gave long and thin mango slices. It seemed to blend into the dish a bit better. At Minglaba, the mango chunks were much larger, so some bites were just overpowering mango. Yangon's dish was saucy-er, but I couldn't quite pick out if this was a "real" sauce, or perhaps something prepared...but I quite liked it, especially with the rice. Yangon's dish has more onions than I remembered there being in the Minglaba dish, and my girlfriend said a couple piece of onions were undercooked/a bit raw but I didn't have any of those. The chicken seemed of decent quality, and was properly cooked.
I actually really liked the rice. It was just "sticky" enough, but still moist and fluffy.
We were the only people in the restaurant because they turned off the "open" sign after they sat us, but service was friendly and attentive, but not in-the-way.
Pricing felt a little bit high, but not terrible. The two of us split the entire, egg rolls and two orders of steamed rice and left satisfied.
I could see parking could be tricky because of how close they are to the California intersection. The parking lot next door is only for Wal-greens, and very little parking right on Broadway.
I think the menu was a little small compared to Minglaba, and I didn't see Tampoi rice (which I associate, perhaps mistakenly, with Burmese restaurants) but it was adequately sized if I wasn't comparing it to Minglaba.
Pleasant experience, parking was a bit wonky, was a liiiittle expensive, food was OK, but unless I'm already on Broadway, I would rather go to Minglaba. I do feel like I owe this place another visit to try a couple more entrees, since we only tried one.
My scale:
1- it made me sick, the place was disgustingly filthy, or they ripped me off or something, and I'm never going back
2- could be a 3 but maybe one aspect was bad...but in general, it's not-very-good, and I wouldn't go back. Didn't make me sick and they didn't rip me off, but I won't be back.
3- I wouldn't make a special trip, but if someone else wanted to try it or I was on the same street I might stop in. Maybe a bit expensive, or not super great...maybe parking is a pain and indifferent service...but nothing too "wrong"...just nothing great.
4- this was good enough to be a regular stop, and I would make a special trip.
5- Perfect food and service. I can forgive high price if it's a high-end place, but even better if its good value. read more
