As in my last Chinese restaurant review, I really don't care that Yang Chow may not be the most authentic Chinese restaurant around. I tried several different dishes, and some I really liked, while some weren't very good. As other reviewers mentioned, the number one thing to order at Yang Chow is the Slippery Shrimp. Hands down this has to be the most popular dish served, and with good reason. The combination of sweet and spicy was just perfect. This stuff is addicting! The other dish I really enjoyed was the Vegetable Pan Fried Noodles. This is not actually on the menu, but they have both Chicken and Shrimp Pan Fried Noodles, so why not ask for Vegetable? The noodles were perfect and topped with an assortment of pea pods, broccoli, mushrooms, water chestnuts, carrots, and more. You can see the other dishes I tried in my photos, but I don't really recommend ordering them. Just stick with the Slippery Shrimp, and maybe have some Pan Fried Noodles or some soup, and you'll be a happy diner. 3.5 stars read more

NO wait! We had the following: Slippery Shrimp - $16.50 House Special Shredded Beef - $14.50 Yang Chow Juicy Steamed Dumplings - $8.50 Since these are all specialty dishes, did not get them on the lunch menu. My favorites - Slippery Shrimp and House Special Shredded Beef. They were a little on the saltier end, but nothing a nice bowl of rice couldn't fix. Probably would not order the Yang Chow Juicy Steamed Dumplings again - the skin was too thick and didn't retain the juices like the dumplings should. Need to eat the Slippery Shrimp there - it wouldn't taste the same if you ordered takeout - it loses the crispiness. read more

Love this place, it is never that busy when I have gone and service is good. Plenty of private lot parking and conveniently near the freeway. Slippery Shrimp by far is one of the two best dishes I enjoy at any Yang Chows. Crispy on the outside and soft in the inside with a tangy sauce that compliments the shrimp well. Also ordered the beef and broccoli which had a thick sauce to it which I enjoyed, was not watered down like other beef and broccoli dishes. Beef was flavorful and the broccoli was crunchy. Last dish was the combination lo mein with chicken, beef and shrimp, this dish is truly delicious. Prices have gone up a bit but that is expected for the portions you get here. This location is much more convenient than the Chinatown one! I first heard about the slippery shrimp here through Food Network's The Best Thing I Ever Ate (awesome show) and I've been eating it ever since. I'm always very satisfied with the size ;) It seems like there are at least 50 little shrimps in one order! And the flavor is the farthest thing from bland. It's savory, sweet, sour, salty, just perfect!! Texture? Crispy exterior and tender shrimp. The sauce is PERFECT to eat over rice. Other stuff at Yang Chow, though, is pretty ordinary. The hot and sour soup is kinda medicinal tasting. The Yang Chow fried rice is good but really oily. The sauteed eggplant has a yummy sauce, but again, is really oily. Usually a great place to go. Unfortunately this was not their night. We noticed they were busy but they are usually very fast. We waited over 45 minutes for them to come back and tell us they did not have our order in. Even worse, was the waiter who took our order was asking us who took the order so he could follow up with them. This was ridiculous and all they care about is getting to the next customer. Looks like the owners are super involved. Food- Slippery shrimp ($17.50) it's to die for. Fried wontons ($8.50) its ok price is kinda high for wontons. Szechuan beef ($16.95) its good. Beef with broccoli ($14.25) was super salty. Large Hot and Sour soup ($10.95) feeds more than 4 so get the small. Dry Sauteed String Beans ($13.25) was good too. We go here for special occasions, my mom's bday and mother's day. She likes it so we'll be back. The price is pretty steep for what you get. On our vacation in Pasadena, my dad found this place by chance while scrolling through yelp and was intrigued by the many pictures of celebrities that frequent this place. We decided to see what the big deal was and man am I glad we did! We arrived around 5pm on a Monday, so the place was fairly empty. We got seated immediately and decided to order a bunch of different dishes. They took our orders quickly, arrived with hot tea and water immediately, and the food arrived about 10-15 minutes after we got our egg drop soup. Fast and friendly service! I have to say, the quality of this food was pretty good! The house special chicken was super yummy and has tons of veggies which I love. I warn you though, it has lots of sauce, so you definitely need some rice or noodles to eat with it. I personally didn't eat the slippery shrimp because I'm allergic, but my family said it was super delicious. It's also the most featured dish on yelp, so I'm guessing it's really good! My wife and I were visiting Pasadena last Sunday and we felt like having Chinese food for lunch. We found Yang Chow on line and decided to give it a try. The restaurant is very pleasant and nice inside. The gentleman who was the host was very friendly and seated us, he also took our order. He helped us to order since we had a question about a couple of items on the menu. The food came out promptly and was very delicious. We ate our fill and had leftovers to bring home. The waiter came back to check on us and ask how the food was. One thing we ordered was the shrimp fried rice. The waiter said they could add soy sauce to it when they were cooking it. We said yes and the rice was very, very tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant in the Pasadena area if you are looking for delicious Chinese food and good, friendly service. read more

I've passed by this place many times and never had a chance to eat here since the building never really stood out for me. But today, I wanted something different from Panda Express and the many, many Taiwanese style restaurants near the house. So I went and checked their Yelp and called them and just ordered without knowing how much everything was. Yelp says 2 "$" so I assumed $9-10 an item?? So I ordered: A large Wonton Soup Dry sautéed string beans with pork Slippery Chicken Chicken LoMein. The lady was friendly and everything was correct, but when I got there to pick up, I was told my total for all was $62!!! Omg! So checked their menu and saw that the average price for each was $14. The Slippery Chicken alone was $17.95! It's good, reminiscent of Orange Chicken without the tang, but for the same price I might as well go to PF Chang! Wonton soup was ok. The dough was thick and slightly undercooked. Dry sautéed beans were great, and Chicken LoMein was ok. Not worth $13.25. So dinner was $62 and it didn't even include the steamed rice. I mean, food tastes ok, but really deducted the stars because for the same price, I might was well go to a better quality restaurant like PF Chang or Panda Inn. Sorry. Overpriced. Yang Chow has always been my family's go to Chinese restaurant and it should be yours too! The Chinatown and Pasadena locations are both phenomenal, but we prefer to go to this one because it's much more accessible and closer by. But both restaurants share the same quality of food, service and amazingness. My personal favorite dish is the schezuan beef, it is incredible! Next would be the slippery chicken and the fried wontons, followed by the Shanghai noodles and the spicy wonton soup and then the green beans. All the dishes I have ever had have never left me disappointed or unsatisfied but even more in awe of their amazingness. Dined INSIDE last night, the first time Yang Chow was available for inside service after months of COVID. As usual, the Slippery Shrimp was perfect! The staff was very nice and appreciative. My guests from Michigan were pleased and mentioned that they had been thinking of Yang Chow since their last visit. This is Chinese food suited for American tastes.
