Yang Chow is adequate. Yang Chow is kind of like a modernized Chinese food joint, still fast food status. Ordered at 8:20 and they accepted the order, got there 8:35, when they close at 8:30, still cool with that, so that was nice. Food: Pretty average taste. Ordered Kungpao Chicken, Szechuan beef, and string beans with meat. Costing almost $20 a dish is a hefty price for the amount of food you get. And it's not even that great! Worst part is, at this price range, it doesn't even include rice! Overall: At around $20 a dish, you'd have expected something better. But I've been looking to try this place as I pass it often. The real killer is the not including rice part. At $20 a dish, you can definitely include a bowl of rice per dish at the minimum. Unless a meteor strikes, I highly doubt I'll be returning here at all. read more

We visited Yang Chow earlier this week...our fourth visit. Delicious as always...enjoyed the Slippery Shrimp, Beef with Broccoli, Chicken Fried Rice and Egg Drop Soup. Conveniently located in Pasadena, parking is great compared to Chinatown. We usually order slippery chicken and salt and pepper porkchop. Although, it's our favorite, the taste and flavor has been inconsistent. Their service is also a hit or miss but is better than other Chinese restaurants around the area. I've been to this location many times, the food is great and good service. Our experience was normal until we started feeling rushed as we ended our meal. First, my dad's tea cup was taken away although we were still drinking and had a kettle on the table. When we asked for another cup it seemed like the staff seemed to be hesitant. This could be remedied by staff asking if you are done with something especially a drinking cup, before taking it away. Also, there were 4 different staff members that asked us if we were done with our food within a couple minutes intervals of each other-- always saying "it's ok, take your time," but still coming back. It was clear they are not observant of one another or communicate. Our check was brought by one person, then we provide payment promptly, the receipt to sign was dropped off, I added the tip and kept the customer copy. A staff member came to pick it up. I could sense other staff members hovering. At this point our left overs were packed up and we started to get up to leave. We were stopped to be asked where the signed receipt was. We told them that it was picked up and the staff member looked to the other staff and they all claimed they hadn't picked it up. This is embarrassing as it implies we didn't pay for our meal and were attempting to leave. My mom found her copy of the receipt and at this point a staff member became apologetic because she was able to confirm from someone else that we indeed already paid. This was totally rude. The staff need to communicate with one another about picking up receipts and not accuse a customer of not paying or being honest. Please work on this. read more

I'd had Yang Chow's dishes several times in the past as my friends like to order out from here for our get-togethers. But dining in is a whole different experience. Yang Chow is very comfortable, with great service and reliable renditions of classic Chinese dishes. It reminds me of the Chinese restaurant my family went to when I was a kid; most of the patrons appear not to be Chinese and there's not a lot of spice on the menu to trouble Midwestern-influenced palates. I think I've had their slippery shrimp at least three times. It's probably their most famous dish and is always flavorful and satisfying, with a rich sauce and juicy shrimp. Another favorite of mine is the green beans with pork, full of flavor and not overcooked. Complimentary fortune cookies and oranges arrive for the finish. Free parking in the lot. read more

We had to try Yang Chow at least once since EVERY person (who is not Chinese) RAVES about it. Finally tried it via takeout. My husband went to pick up the food. He said that they looked at him strangely like "Why is a Chinese guy here?" kind of look. He even checked to make sure that he got fortune cookies. We ordered two items: Braised lions head meatball - Huge meatballs with bamboo shoots and mushrooms. Lots of sauce. (Tasted fine but not as authentic as I like it. Supposed to be cooked with napa cabbage.) Mu Shu Pork - It came with 4 tortillas. You wrap it yourself. Good, safe dish. Both tasted fine. I can see how people would like this place. It is like PF Changs. They charge more to cater to non-Chinese people. We had leftovers the next day. I read that the portion size was generous. I actually do not think so given the price. But hey.. So...non-Chinese people, this is delicious Chinese food. More power to Yang Chow for being a staple for decades at that price point. BRAVO!!! Long time customers of the one in China Town. We love Yang Chows and we're happy to try a new location. It was just as tasty but the service was lacking. Cut broccoli was just hanging out on tables on your way to the restroom. Not sure how long they had been just sitting out there for. Servers rush you as well. We had just gotten the check and we're still eating and talking when they came back and asked for the check. Then again a little less then 2 minutes. After my uncle gave them the card they brought it back and again we were conversing and it wasn't that long that the lady came by and felt the need to explain how to tip and sign the paper. My uncle said ok and we continued the conversation. Shortly later a man asked if we were done and had signed the check. We asked for to go boxes and they packed them up. Much to our surprise when we got home and went to put the left overs away we were met with a soggy paper bag inside of the plastic one. They had put all the to go boxes in upside down so the the sauces/juices leaked out. We couldn't help but think it was retaliation for the "taking to long" with the check. We will stick to the one in China Town. The stars are for the taste even though we are concerned about freshness. read more

Horrible experience tonight! The restaurant is packed and only two servers. I couldn't even get chopsticks so I had to eat Chinese food with a fork. The wine glass is the size of a shot glass and they charge $12.00 for a 3 ounce glass of wine. Went to the Pasadena location in hopes of getting the same tasting food as the Broadway location but that's not what happened. The sauce in the meat dishes were watered down. Literally, the Mongolian Beef was swimming in water and might as well have been soup. It was the same with the Kung Pow Shrimp. Did we eat it? Yes. We couldn't bring ourselves to waste 70+ dollars worth of food (also ordered Yangchow fried rice which was the only good dish and wonton soup which was okay.) Yang chow is a hidden Pasadena gem. A bit expensive especially for things like slippery shrimp but worth it in my opinion. This place has been around for decades with loyal customers and great friendly waitstaff to prove why. They're quick, efficient, kind, and the food is top notch. I love coming here for their sizzling rice soup (it literally sizzles on the plate as the waiter slides it into the soup!!), chow mein with combo veggies and meat, and the slippery shrimp. Visited 6/3/2017 We usually go to the one located in Chinatown, but we finally decided to try this one since it's fairly close to us. I like the fact that the parking is SO MUCH easier!! LOVE the private parking lot which is bigger and it's not valet. Plenty of street parking also. What I didn't like is that the neighborhood isn't that interesting compared to Chinatown. This restaurant appears smaller than the one in Chinatown. We ordered our usual (slippery shrimp) and it tasted just as good. The rest of the items we ordered (green beans, chicken and broccoli, noodles, ...) is just as comparable to the Chinatown restaurant. Will we be back? Probably so, but I still prefer Chinatown even with the lousy parking. read more
