I had the clear soup and shrimp tempura roll, and both were delicious! The roll could have been a bit tighter/smaller, so it was hard to chew (lack of room in my mouth), but it was very tasty! I wasn't expecting much from a low-frills sushi spot this far from the coast, but the quality of the fish was genuinely impressive--especially considering the location. I had the Tako Su, Salmon Lovers (nigiri and rolls), steak & shrimp hibachi, and the seaweed salad. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor. The salmon in particular was buttery and clean-tasting--easily rivaling what I've had in much bigger cities. The place itself isn't trying to be upscale or trendy, and that's part of the charm. It's casual, comfortable, and pulls it off with zero pretense. No flash, just great food and friendly service. The fish was light pink and very soft I didn't smell the old smell but it tasted muddy and super fishy, sure fire sign of old fish. The waitress tried telling me it was because it was from a fatty part of the fish, which is ridiculous. I eat sushi for the clean tastes and have for many years, and tuna is my favorite for the texture and taste. Its super unfortunate but i cant trust them anymore, and im unwilling to "chance it" when raw food is concerned. The construction of the roll was bad too, loose with folded parts of the wrapper. I care much less about how well the roll is constructed, but in this context when the fish is this bad, it shows to me how little they care right now. read more

Came here hungry and left spiritually bankrupt. I paid way too much for sushi that tasted like it had trust issues. The small amount of salmon was so questionable I started reflecting on my life choices and wondering if this was karma for ignoring my budget. Each bite felt like my wallet whispering, "Why would you do this?" The rice was mushy, the rolls were falling apart, and the only thing fresh was regret. I could've invested this money. I could've bought groceries. I could've literally lit the cash on fire and gotten the same emotional experience. Do not get me started on their customer service. Its not about the refund but the concept of dealing with customers that keep your restaurant going. At least try accommodating the customers so they are willing to give it another shot. My boyfriend and I ate here while we were killing time before the Lantern Tour in Au Sable Chasm. I've had better. Our seaweed salad came to our table frozen with small pieces of ice still in it. My teeth are sensitive to cold, so I had to pour some of my hot green tea into the bowl to eat it. Also, the eel in my Dragon roll (eel, cucumber with slice avocado on top served with eel sauce) wasn't evenly distributed because there was no eel in 3 of the 8 pieces I had which was disappointing because I only ordered it for the eel. Lastly, my boyfriend loves spicy sushi but he said that they topped his Mars roll with too much of it that he couldn't really taste anything underneath. Our waitress was very nice though. read more

The portions are plentiful. They also have well priced, great bento box combos. The service is hit or miss depending on who you get. I was pleasantly surprised but the quality of this sushi. They are currently only doing take out but there are picnic tables near by. We ordered the avocado and spring salad to start, which were very simple and didn't come with enough dressing, but we ate what we could. The spring salad is just lettuce but would have been nice if it came with cucumber or carrots. For sushi we ordered the crazy roll, spicy tuna and naruto roll. I LOVE spicy tuna and was overall very happy with the quality of the tuna. The crazy roll was our favorite though, it had lots of flavor especially for those who aren't very adventurous when it comes to sushi. The naruto roll was very good and could have used a little spicy mayo to add to the flavor, but the quality of the fish was good. We have been customers here for at least 6 years as I can recall. Always great. I was berated by the person on the phone when I called to advise that the meal was inedible. She told me the order sat for hours. Well that should not have happened as I told them when I would pick it up. My wife and I have been here maybe half a dozen times and it's always a delight. Some of the best sushi we have ever had, and the Crazy Roll (shrimp tempura roll with tons of crab salad on top) is our favorite sushi roll, period. Last night we tried the hibachi dinners for the first time, and found generous portions with sublimely grilled vegetables and expertly prepared filet mignon, scallops and shrimp. The sushi here is fabulous! Far better than the "other" sushi restaurant in the area. The ginger dressing on the green salad is delicious. The mango kani salad is my absolute favorite! Everything was fresh and came out quickly and in perfect timing (apps to entrees). I had the hibachi scallop and steak combo and man was the steak was amazingly tender. The scallops were cooked perfectly too. I enjoyed it and since we were new to YAMA, I had leftovers since I just couldn't decide. The monkey roll was absolutely delicious, such a strange combo but it fit so well. I'm excited to try the sashimi and appetizers next time. I have eaten at numerous excellent sushi restaurants and so for me Yama sushi barely passes the bar for take-out and the appalling service here is a major reason to stay away. This is the most bizarre 'restaurant' experience ever, for me. I posted a review previously about how the owner, or his wife who knows -- was acting rude and completely irrational and refused to answer questions or take my order by phone. I have just realized that this person who acted hugely hubristic, and very unstable with me on the phone and sadly makes me question how they must treat their staff HAS BLOCKED MY PERSONAL PHONE NUMBER FROM THE RESTAURANT MAIN LINE. WHO, WHO DOES BUSINESS THIS WAY?! I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT AND I EAT OUT A LOT. Neither the food nor the experience are authentic here. I've had their spicy tuna which was so doughy I threw at least half of it away. I have also seen a picture of their fried ice cream loaded with whipped cream (it looks like the commercial stuff) and a maraschino cherry. Chicken fried rice? I'm pretty sure that's not even Japanese. I was just at a 2 star Michelin in Washington D.C. (Pineapple and Pearls) a few weeks ago, where the food and service were very nice.
