First of all, WORST SERVICE EVER. I ran into some friends and sat at their table to catch up for a minute and one of our 5 waitresses came up to me and said "can you pay the bill now we need table". Meanwhile nobody was waiting on a table and one of their tables was covered with children's toys in the back. Honestly if it was possibly I would give them zero stars. When I sat down I asked the waitress if I could use cardinal cash and she said yes. Then when I went to pay they told me that they couldn't accept it. They made no effort to make up for their error other then to say sorry. On a Monday evening almost all other restaurants were closed. The special sushi roles were good and so were the dumplings.

The sushi here is delicious and well priced. Their lunch specials are a great deal and everything is made fresh and fast, making this one of my go-to places. It is clear that talent goes into everything you are served. I would highly recommend eating here! read more

I tried YAMA today for lunch. I wish I could honestly give this place a 4 star rating, but too many small things went wrong. It was not busy. There were only 2 other tables occupied. My wife went there last month with her friend and had a really nice meal. I trust her opinion. We have both eaten Japanese food all over the US and in Japan. We lived there for 18 months and ate mostly Japanese food. First impression was being seated by a waitress wearing a backwards baseball hat that was not very personable. This isn't exactly fine dining, and I wasn't expecting that, but that level of casual attire for employees does not give a good first impression. The waitress that actually took my order was dressed more appropriately and was very polite. I ordered the lunch shrimp tempura bento box ($7.95) with a salad and a soda. The soda and salad came out quickly. The salad looked traditional with a slightly thick, more yellow than brown ginger dressing. I quickly found out that the color came from mustard in the dressing. I like mustard as much or more than most in this area, but not in a Japanese-style dressing. Next, was delivered someone else's beef bento box. Which the waitress apologetically removed. After a few minutes longer than it should have been, my meal arrived. Everything looked fresh and a good quantity for the price. The only variation from the menu description was that there was only half of a California roll. A whole roll is either 6 or eight pieces. This came with 4 small pieces. I don't have an issue with the quantity for the price, but the description should say 'half of a California roll'. The shumai were good but uninteresting. The tempura consisted of 2 shrimp and one piece each of sweet potato, onion, broccoli, and zucchini. They were crunchy, hot and not overcooked. The problem was that they were oily and tasted like oil. My guess is that the fryer oil needed to be changed. Not awful, but tempura should have a crisp, clean taste. The dipping sauce was good, but the quantity was a little short to dip all of that tempura. To top off the errors. I paid the check and had it brought back to me because the waitress forgot to charge me for the soda. So, I paid more. Does all of this add up to a bad restaurant? Not necessarily. I probably just had a bad experience. Too bad it was my first time at YAMA. I will probably go back if it is convenient, but I won't rush. Downtown Plattsburgh can be tough to find parking this time of year. If I happen to be there and there is parking, I will try again and update my rating. read more

They really do have the best beef fried rice here! I live in burlington and when o come to plattsburg that's the first place I want to go to get something to eat. The owner Joy is so nice as well and your not only is cooked to perfection but they are quick as well with your orders. read more

This shop is close to my office and when I forget to pack my lunch, this is a go to location. I love the three roll sushi lunch. They give you about 12 different rolls to mix and match and have an option for soup or salad as well. I order and meal is ready within 15 minutes and the staff is always very welcoming and friendly. I've tried 8 or 9 of the rolls available and all have been fantastic. Check it out on your lunch break or for any meal. read more

So the spot kind of weirded me out when we first walked in oh, they were new to the town new restaurant but didn't seem very welcoming when I walked in. As someone who works downtown, I appreciate having a restaurant to order from that is affordable, quick and tasty. Yama hits all 3 marks. The habachi lunch special is delicious! I have tried the steak, chicken and shrimp and all of them are great. They give you generous portions for a really good price. I definitely recommend this spot for take out. Fairly mediocre sushi, with horrible service on the side. While it might be your only option for sushi in Plattsburgh, I would sadly still recommend taking a hard pass - and I really like sushi. The freshness of the fish is hit or miss, and that one miss (or more) really ruins the whole meal. In my case the deal breaker was the tuna, which was definitely less-than-average quality. I have only eaten takeout from them so I can't speak regarding the dine-in experience, but whoever takes the orders by phone is staggeringly rude and obnoxious. read more

It is with heavy heart that I write this foreboding review, I love absolutely love the town of Plattsburg which is where this restaurant is situated, and again after seeing the high star level for this restaurant I and I mean we hesitantly entered this restaurant (my friend and I), we sat and we ordered, first of the waitresses are very nice but from here on it went downhill like a roller coaster much to my dismay, we made the order of yaki soba, which should be called yaki sobs because once it arrived it almost made me cry, my friend states that it looked bland, that was not an understatement, upon consuming this tasteless concoction of so called ramen noodles with chicken that seems to come from the left over remains of a tire factory(I know that's mean but it was bland to the point of blasphemy), and as someone who does not like to waste food I precariously ate it almost to the finish but my mind and stomach were at odds as what to do, eventually I only ate 3/4ths of it because I could no longer justify this excuse of a dish and apart there were orange slices next to it which the steam from the noodles had warmed and was emanating a foul orange smell, which as a garnish is down right odd, ok so round 2 comes around I order also some spicy mako combo! Can't go wrong with that? Right? Wrong with a capital W, upon eating this parody of sushi I notice it has bread crumbs in the middle I guess so as to give it crunchiness, but it off set the taste so much to he point that I wondered if this was some cruel joke, not to mention that we waited for like a good 15 to 20 minutes, I was optimistic because I thought well if we're waiting this long the fish must be stunning, wrong again!!! The best part of my meal was the Pepsi i had and I'm not joking. I'm not sure what the expectations are, and people rant and rave about this place but that must be because there are no real competitors, do I want sushi straight from Japan yes but I'll also eat sushi from the supermarket, which I've had and blows this away, again it's not personal but cmon give me some quality at least supermarket quality. I could go on but I'll leave it at that, save your money go elsewhere, if you've never eaten sushi, don't let this be your first experience.....but again the staff was really nice. read more

Excellent Sushi! We got the Monkey role, Tiger role, and the Sweet Heart role. These three were great. The Monkey role was very different (have never seen that combo anywhere else). I strongly recommend it if you like banana. The rolls were fresh tasting and rivaled some of my favorite places in Washington DC. Sorry but after reading the reviews I was really looking forward to this. I'm not the pickiest sushi eater, but the fish was just bad. I ordered the sushi deluxe to go and even the pieces that tasted good were set atop stale/hard rice. Threw about half of the dish away. The miso soup was good at least. I'm in love with this place! It's a hole in the wall, small place... not trendy not fusion... so tired of those places. This is my sort of comfort food. I grew up in a military town where we had every type of food. When I moved to Plattsburgh I was highly disappointed with the choices. It has an old dinner feel... so nothing special. But great food. I stopped in to order takeout on Sunday June 12,2016. I ordered the Vegetable Teriyaki and it was prepared quickly. When I got home I had no rice or fortune cookie. The salad was skimpy,half of a cup of lettuce, at best and the rice was non existent. The teriyaki was good but rice would have been nice. The restaurant was not busy so I don't understand what happened. I would give the main course a four star but the attention to detail gets two stars.
