While in the upper 3-star range, I opted to give benefit of the doubt in grading up due to (1) my overall impression; (2) distinctiveness relative to competition; and (3) economic utility, relatively and absolutely. The food here is well-priced, especially given the strong quality of ingredients and execution. While there is room for improvement in execution, flavor and spices are not lacking here; something which is quite uncommon in major cities in the US. Even among ethnic foods, there is a common and prevailing trend to water down or alter flavor and spice index to accommodate mainstream tastes. While very modern and trendy, this restaurant adheres a Middle Eastern root while being accessible, and yet bold, distinctive, and delightful. I came here once while traveling, but I would yield benefit of the doubt that it is difficult to be disappointed here; even after numerous repeat visits. Further, the portions are very generous. Given the food hall style arrangement where this restaurant is located, I would recommend getting 2 or 3 items here and then sharing & amalgamating from numerous other options. The food here, both in quality and compatibility, work well with almost anything. I've been coming to Yalla every so often for years and it's been a while since my last review! First things first, their falafel is some of the best you'll find in the city. It's perfectly herbaceous and crispy and just a delight to the tastebuds, truly. If I'm going to Krog, I'll usually try to stop by Yalla for a side of falafel. The last few times I've gone, I've ordered the chicken shawarma salad bowl, which is just okay... not my fave. I used to love the bowls, which came with your choice of protein, hummus, labne, chopped cucumber and tomato, pickles, and, if I recall correctly, a choice of sauce. I know I preferred zhug more than tahini. It might have even come with tahini as well though. Anyway, the menu has changed a bit over the years, because now all the bowls are salad bowls with lettuce (don't remember right now but pretty sure it's iceberg) and ranch labne. No option of a sauce, even though I could likely just ask for zhug and no lettuce. But that kind of defeats the purpose. Needless to say, I preferred the bowls the way they were previously. I love a good salad, but in this case, I don't think the lettuce adds anything to the flavor. If anything, I think it actually diminishes it a bit. I think the pita or laffa options would be better. I just tend to go for bowls. Service is generally fairly quick and the food is consistent with what you expect. The waiting area in front of the counter can get a little crowded from all the surrounding restaurants, but if you know what to expect it's fine. If you like falafel and other Middle Eastern food, Yalla is worth trying out for sure. read more

I eat here often after going to dancing dogs yoga. It is a delicious middle eastern place in KSM. I always get the laffa with the fried eggplant and add lamb. It's an absolutely wrap that normally lasts me two meals. The eggplant is perfectly fried and not soggy, the lamb is juicy tender and well seasoned. I love that the wrap has a large amount of vegetables and greens. I always forget what each ingredient is but the staff is always happy to explain things to me and offer suggestions as needed. Had a great experience eating lunch at Yalla. The staff was very friendly and gave good recommendations for the meal. We got an Olive plate (which included pickles, capers, and cauliflower pickled as well), a falafel plate, falafel pita, and a chicken schwarma pita. The only slight critique I would give was the chicken schwarma pita was a bit heavy on the pickles inside, so keep that in mind if someone in your family doesn't like them. The falafel's were fried fresh in front of us. They were served in very nice containers. The only thing I gave a four star was the atmosphere. I literally can't say enough good things about Yalla. The food here is off the charts good. I almost always get the chicken schwarma laffa. This is basically a Middle Eastern burrito with chicken and various toppings. They also have some tasty sodas and it looKs like they have fries now! I'll have to try those next time. I was very excited to try this place out but it fell short of expectations. I tried their chicken shawarma bowl which was I believe $12. It came out very quickly and service was nice. Although the chicken was soft, it was lukewarm and relief heavily on sauces for flavor. The hummus was very plain and the redder spicier sauce lacked flavor which left just spice. I wish it came with more veggies as I felt my bowl was basically only chicken, especially towards the end. Revisited Yalla a couple years later and it is still solid. The concept is basically fast casual Mediterranean (although I think it might be more specifically Israeli based on what they call some of their items) and they offer various a la carte dips as well as several entrees that comprise a protein plus various toppings/sauces that you can have in either pita, laffah, or bowl form. The first time I came I had the shouk, which is a huge hearty bowl of food (had it in bowl form). The sabich (in pita form) last time was ok but not the best sabich I've ever had. This time I had the chicken shawarma bowl, which is basically exactly the same as the shouk except minus the fries and plus some fried eggplant. It was a VERY filling, very flavorful lunch. The chicken is tender and flavorful, and all the add ins go great together. The harissa is slightly but not overly spicy (honestly, the heat is barely noticeable but the flavor shines). The bright tang of the peach amba and the pickles is very necessary to balance out the richness of the hummus and tahini. If I had one note, it's that I wish there was more of the chopped salad in the bowl to increase the fresh crunch to creamy richness ratio. This may not look like a huge meal but it will END YOU so make sure you come hungry! I am generally a monster when it comes to food but I actually needed a nap after this one. This is a shop inside Krog, we order the baba ganoush. The service was good, the employees were nice and came out relatively quick. We ordered it with extra pita but it looked different than normal pita. There was too much tahini in the actual baba ganoush and even more tahini on it. Maybe it is just personal preference, but I just don't enjoy that much tahini. I wish you were able to taste the eggplant and that maybe an olive oil finish rather than the tahini. I really appreciate that krog has free parking, though it's limited, and offers free flat and sparkling water-- I feel like it encourages people to drink more water. I always get the same thing-- the "shouk" in a laffa. The laffa is key y'all. They warm it up and it's always soft with a little bit of doughy stretchy texture. It holds all of the ingredients inside really well and it is much bigger than the pita portion so you well definitely be satisfied and full. Service is always courteous and the order is usually ready within 10-15 minutes or so of ordering. Really tasty and consistent in flavor and ratio of. Yum. My favorite part of any Israeli meal is the salatim, or freshly-prepared vegetable dishes, and an order of the Salatim Bowl here came with a huge selection including hummus, chopped cucumber/tomato salad, pickled cauliflower, tahini coleslaw, roasted red peppers, watermelon radish, and my favorites, the marinated mushrooms and the roasted sliced carrots, which had a fascinating chewy texture. The array of vegetables were piled into a bowl and topped with tahini and cilantro, and the pita bread that came on the side made for a great accompaniment to the hummus in particular. Ok, so part of my disappointment here was my fault. I was disappointed that I couldn't have ramen which is what I was craving and when I'm disappointed I want comfort food.. which for me, is middle eastern food. I had my husband go pick up my bowl and color me surprised when I realized, OMG KILLME, THERE IS NO RICE. How should I have a comfort food shawerma bowl with no rice?! I guess I just assumed the bowl would come with rice but alas, there is nothing about rice on the menu. The flavors of everything are good but I feel it's poorly executed in the bowl. I could see about 3 different dips in the bottom of the bowl but it was so hard to get to them and each bite was completely different; I had no idea what I was going to get next. There was a lot more chicken than there was everything else and I found myself eating around it to try and get to other things. I would have preferred the bowl all separated into a mezza plate so I could have a little of this, a little of that. They had me at Baba Ganoush! Ordered the baba ganoush, chicken schwarma laffa and falafel laffa. For the main items, you have a choice of getting the meals with a pita, laffa or bowl. The laffa is a traditional Middle Eastern bread, it reminds me of a thinner Naan bread. Everything was very tasty and full of flavor. The laffa bread was perfectly thin and soft. Yalla is healthier than many of the other delicious options at Krog. That's what I tell myself to assuage my guilt every time I eat here. The bowls are satisfying, the laffas (essentially big pita roll sandwiches) are large, and I'm satisfied every time I eat here. I usually get the bowl as they're not too expensive and have sufficient quantity and diversity in composition. My one caveat: sometimes their food can be a little too salty and exacerbate thirst.
