This was a special occasion dinner. We were celebrating a birthday. It was fantastic for that. The cocktails were balanced and well thought out. They had a lot with Mezcal which is not my jam, so I went for things with Tequila. The strawberry Julep was the best mint julep I have ever had and being from Kentucky, that says something. Carlos our server was amazing. We wanted for nothing. It was perfect. And the food was absolutely delicious. Now we went here specifically because they had edible insects on the menu and we wanted a dinner adventure. Even the bugs were tasty. There is a mile made with Ants and it was pretty good. It was worth trying the mole sampler. The place is beautiful. I recommend a reservation, but not necessarily needed if you go early or during the week. If I could stay one more night in Houston, I would come back and pretend I am in Oaxaca. I really enjoy the food, ambiance and service. Excited to see a few of my favorite Mezcal's in their large collection, and more excited for the Mezcal cocktails. This place was fine but I wouldn't return. We ordered the mole sampler to start which came with four different moles and a cheese and bean quesadilla to taste them with. The hormigas mole was my favorite and the squash one was delicious as well. The red one tasted like salsa. The corn tortilla that was used for the quesadilla was practically inedible. It had a strange texture that was both so blandly brittle but also just rubbery enough on the inside that it was near impossible to cut. We got some sort of aguachile that was fresh but it was somehow so boring. It wasn't particularly well seasoned and the fish itself wasn't flavorful so it just ended up being a little forgettable. My favorite item was the memela which was an awesome combination of flavor and had some deliciously cooked pork. For dessert we had the pumpkin mousse which was a mistake. It tasted commercial and was very basic flavor wise. All in all, I think some of the items on the menu are significantly better than others and you just have to get the right ones. read more

My friends and I came here on a bustling Saturday evening and enjoyed a delightful meal. We sampled the guacamole with tostadas which included tasting some insects which looked unappetizing but were fun to try. I ordered the Callo de Hecha, seared scallops with a light green sauce and pumpkin seeds. The scallops themselves were well-cooked and complemented by the sauce. The dessert is one of the stars of the show - the cacao came with a delightful mix of chocolate delights all enclosed in a hand-painted white chocolate shell. The helado de elote was a unique twist, with what looked like baby corn actually disguised as ice cream. What prevents me from giving this place 5 stars are a couple minor notes, as given the higher price range of this restaurant, the 5 star bar is slightly higher. One issue was the limited parking, though there is valet parking for around $11. The service was a bit too prompt at times, but perhaps a function of a larger group. However, I wouldn't let these small issues dissuade folks from giving this place a try. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a more upscale dining restaurant in Houston without sacrificing flavor. read more

10/10 this place is worth the hype and definetely earned its spot as a top pick for Houston dining. The restaurant itself is unpretentious, you can stroll in and chat with the hostess from the street entrance or enter from the hotel side at the Marriott Marquis as they are connected. For parking, I did the valet. Im not sure if its less if just eating at the restaurant, I had to pay $65 for the hotel valet plus a $5+ tip that they seemed to include automatically. I was visiting the hotel for the day as I was celebrating my birthday, so I didnt mind the charge, but make sure to ask if youre just eating dinner. We decided to try most of the happy hour offerings and I was not disappointed. It was Cinco de Mayo weekend so they offered HH on a saturday which was amazing. I would return again during the week and perhaps try the bar seating as well. The staff is friendly and welcoming. For HH, we tried the Guacamole, Tacos Papa, Taquitos Dorados, Tostado Cameron and the Costillas Puerco. I loved the different flavor combinations of all the dishes. My stand out was the Taquitos and the Ribs (Costillas Puercos). The taquitos were just bursting with flavor, so fresh and satisying. The ribs had a mole sauce on them that was smokey and savory and blended together so nicely. Im not typically a mole fan but I was just so impressed by the approachabilty of all the dishes. We also ordered the enchiladas dinner (chicken) and the Cachetes de Res. The Cachetes were the best dish ever. If I could give them a million stars I would. Im not even a beef eater and I enjoyed these immensely. I would pass on the enchiladas, they were super bland and almost dry. For desert, we received a complimentary sorbet for my birthday which was so kind. It was refreshing and light. We then ordered the Cacao and the Chocolate Vegan Cake. The cake was just alright, nothing special. But the Cacao, OMG that was probably the best desert Ive ever had in my life. I do not exagerate, I will go back just for that desert. Im still thinking about it. The shell is edible, some sort of white chocolate? The 2 meats that were in the buffet were carnitas and barbacoa. The carnitas were decent but how do you ruin barbacoa?! It did not taste good at all, hell I couldn't tell if it was even beef. The ambiance and decor is nice but the men's restroom is trashy compared to the rest of the place. Only one stall and one urinal where it looks like someone did a half ass job patching the wall paper that was previously damaged. You're overcharging people for bland food at least have the decency to get things fixed correctly. The staff and service was great. A little slow but I try not to rush on a Sunday so no worries . I stopped by Xochi for lunch on a Thursday for my birthday. Located downtown, we parked at the metered parking across the street. Valet is also an option. With this Mexican restaurant being located close to Discovery Green, self-parking is not easy. But definitely worth it for a Hugo Ortega restaurant. One of Houston's most famous chefs, and a James Beard winner at that, I've tried out a lot of his other restaurants in town. Xochi had been on my list for a while. The restaurant is attached to the Marriott Marquis. We were seated promptly and started to look over the menu. The ambiance at Xochi is nice. Fresh and modern with an emphasis on Mexican decor. Hugo Ortega is from Oaxaca which is renowned in Mexico for its cuisine. I started off with a Mexican beer I had never had before and then tlayuda de res. The tlayuda is a popular street food in Oaxaca and it was my first time having it. The best way to describe it is think of a Mexican pizza. Start with a crisp large tortilla and then add skirt steak, chicilo mole (the sauce), quesillo (the cheese), and black beans. It's a visually appealing dish and something different than anything I've ever had. Not my favorite but the beef was flavorful. The service was fantastic. Our waiter was attentive and had an attention to detail. You can tell that Hugo trains his staff very well. He asked us if we were celebrating anything and we told him that it was my birthday. They provided me with a complimentary flan with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate and a candle. Super nice of them! We also tried their Oaxacan hot chocolate and churros. The hot chocolate is made tableside which is a cool experience. The churros were delightful---one of my favorite desserts but the hot chocolate was lukewarm so this was a mess. Be warned that it comes with grasshopper garnish (we got it without the insects as our waiter warned us). I absolutely loved this spot! It is the perfect blend of authenticity and sophistication, and it is also owned by Chef Hugo, if that means anything to you. It was recommended to me, so I decided to give it a try for lunch. I split the barbacoa de res rolled steak and the calabacita side with my partner, and it was enough to feed two. We could have been fine with just the steak. Portions are large. The steak was deliciously tender and came served with potatoes, carrots, and a mole sauce beneath it. Although I am not a huge fan of mole, I thought it paired well with the steak. There were also balls of masa with a tomatillo sauce over them that great. We were also given corn tortillas on the side, which were a great addition to make tacos. The dish was plated beautifully, and all the flavors worked well together. 10/10, I would order it again. The calabacita side was recommended to us by the server, as the most popular side dish, so we gave it a try. Although I am not a huge fan of squash, it was cooked perfectly. It also came with a mushrooms, queso fresco, and a tomatillo type sauce. It was such a large portion for a side, and I enjoyed it very much. 9/10, I would order it again as well. The interior of the restaurant is nice. It is bright inside with lots of windows, and the seating is comfortable. Ambiance is on the quieter side, which I appreciate. Service is fast and consistent. Our server made great recommendations and checked up on us repeatedly. Food came out fast. There is no free parking. Food: I ordered the steak with ant mole and purple potatoes and I devoured the whole plate (which came with a very reasonable portion size). I also got an appetizer the Queso de Rancho (no notes incredible) and a dessert the Cacao, it was also incredible and offered a great bit of variation for a singular dessert. I also tried my sister's cocktail she ordered (I am unsure of which one it was) and it was so tasty. I am writing this review a few years after I went and I still can not stop thinking about it. We came to the brunch buffet on a Sunday, sorry I couldn't take any picture of the actual buffet area but I was so excited to try everything I forgot. They have real Mexican authentic food and even though is a buffet they still make it flavorful and they have lots of options. The mimosas I think is my favorite part we grabbed the grapefruit one and it was surprisingly good (as I don't really like grapefruit). Buffet ends at 3pm and we got a reservation for 2:15 so some of the dishes looked a bit empty but I understand that they didn't want to refill it but that could've been better that's why I only gave them 4 stars.
