Seattle-Area Boba Shop Review #118 Located across from Westlake Center, this is a full fledged Xing Fu Tang, complete with a bubbling black sugar boba wok and their signature fortune sticks. I especially love the menu towards the rear of the store that depicts all the drinks and whether they contain dairy or tea. Walking in on a Thursday evening right before dinner, it was surprisingly crowded inside. All the seats were taken and there was a small line waiting to order at the kiosk. Luckily the staff is efficient, and I had my drink within a couple of minutes. Taiwan Boba Milk Tea, Large, 25% Sweet, Less Ice ($8.29) - Xing Fu Tang really focuses on two things: black sugar and milk. That focus is evident in this drink, where there's a strong mineral essence from the sugar, and somehow a really strong milkiness (despite being dairy free). The tea? It's an afterthought, with only some flat malty notes to complement the rich and sugary drink. With that being said, the drink is flavorful enough that I don't mind the lack of tea quality at all. Now the sweetness level could use some adjustment - the milk tea by itself is probably good at 25% but with so much of the boba marinade added, it goes up quickly. I might even order 0% next time. In terms of ice, they have less ice as default which I would consider similar to full ice at other boba shops. At least it seems that way since they used large cubed ice in their drinks rather than more typical chipped ice. This drink comes with boba. The boba is clearly homemade, being almost the same texture throughout, and is somewhat lumpy and cuboid in shape rather than perfect spheres. It marinates in the black sugar for a long time, rendering them superbly sweet and sticky. Unfortunately they are there for perhaps too long - at least when I visited, they were near the bottom of the wok. This means the boba is entirely too soft, with a single bite slicing through the sides of the pearl without too much resistance. They also tend to clump up, forming larger conglomerates that get stuck in the boba straw. While there's still somewhat of a bounce, it's noticeably less than perfection. Milk Tea Rating: 4/5 Boba Rating: 3/5 I visited again a couple of weeks later for the Oolong Milk Tea, to see if they could eek a little more tea flavor out of another kind of leaf: Heaven Roast Oolong Boba Milk Tea, Large, 50% Sweet, Less Ice ($8.29) - This tea is a bit more flavorful than the regular milk tea, with a somewhat vegetal and earthy essence that kind of reminds me of Tieguanyin. There's even a slight drying astringency. I forgot to review my notes and ordered this at 50% sweet, which is way, way too sweet for my tastes. I'm definitely going to go with 0% if I visit again. The boba is the same slightly mushy texture as the last visit. At least they are consistent between visits? I think this place is more for show than flavor. I love my boba. It's a very cool way to see how the boba is made. However I ordered a brown sugar boba with 50% boba after seeing how much went into other people's cups. I guess the way they make it is solely the mix that you see in the pan so I got half the amount of flavor as well. All it tasted like was milk and a tiny bit of sugar, once I mixed it was barley tan. After drinking XingFuTang boba in Taipei for $3 for two drinks, we made the rookie error of walking into this location with the same expectations. We watched staff carry the boba from the back and drop it into the aesthetic bowl up front. Spoiler: aesthetic does not equal fresh. It tasted like instant boba -- the kind you make at home from a kit. For $18, that's not a vibe. Some people are super kind while some barely utter 5 words to you. Sometimes the floor is really sticky. The one that really breaks it for me though is inconsistency with how the same exact order will taste depending on who is working. The drinks start at around $8, then it's almost a dollar for no ice (worth it bc they put a lot otherwise), and then about another dollar for alternate milks, which my partner and both get. So on the times when the drink doesn't taste as good as it usually does, it feels like money going down the drain. I'm actually not really a boba person in general, and I tend to prefer fruity drink over milk teas so this review is going to reflect that! Drinks: (3/5) I had no idea this place specialized in brown sugar boba, so I got the strawberry boba milk since brown sugar drinks usually make me feel too heavy (my mistake). I'm not sure how they make the strawberry add-in but it was very candy-like compared to most other places. It was very similar to adding Hershey's strawberry syrup to a cup of milk, which unfortunately wasn't really my vibe. My partner and friends got the taro milk and brown sugar creme brulee milk that I thought were both significantly better than my strawberry boba milk. Amazing tea! I wasn't sure where to grab tea around the Westlake Station area in the evening, but a friend recommended Xing Fu Tang. Semi-small interior, with less than half a dozen tables and designed for grab and go. Walking in, you're immediately hit with caramel/sugary smells of the boba being made. Staff were friendly quick on dishing out the orders. I ordered a World Peace, large size. Delicious pea tea flavor and the boba is incredible. I didn't expect it to actually be strawberry flavored boba, but to instead be the popping boba (you find everywhere else). The boba is actually strawberry flavored, which makes sense since I got to watch the staff making the boba fresh behind the counter. If there's only one downside, it's that the boba is maybe 0.1mm too large for the straws sometimes. So take two straws if you get a boba drink here (for when the first one clogs). read more

Came here after dinner for some boba. The tapioca pearls are fresh made and you can definitely tell, that's what was better than most other places I've been. Otherwise the milk tea is pretty standard which I think you'd expect. The pricing is in line with other places and they have similar mix in flavors/types. We didn't really get any food since we already had dinner but their only food option was a bubble waffle thing, which smelled and looked really good. But, this location was so good for my intense American sweet tooth. I feel like Taiwan was more mellow on the sweetness. I was really excited to try this place since I saw they were from Taiwan. I got the matcha drink with strawberry boba. I like the concept, but the boba was hard and the matcha was disappointing. It also looked nothing like the photo. Usually matcha drinks I get have a matcha layer on top with the milk on the bottom. They already mixed the layers, but when I drank it, it was very milky and I would not consider it to be matcha. Just green colored milk. They also charge you an additional .80 for no ice. That's just topping up my drink with milk/water. I don't like ice cold drinks, so I don't think I should be charged an additional amount for a preference since sugar level was not an additional charge. Other stores I've been to don't do this additional hidden cost. They could either fill it with less liquid then or at least tell me about it. They had a cute little fortune reading station. It said not to take the fortune with you since they were trying to be more eco-friendly, which I found a little ironic since they had plastic cups, plastic straws, plastic seal for the cup, and to top it off... an unnecessary plastic cap for the cup. Came across this bubble tea shop entirely by accident. Ordered a basic bubble tea drink just to test if they have their basics down and immediately could tell that these are fresh boba pearls. The drink was warmer on the bottom because the pearls are still warm and they were very chewy and not hard at all. The big wok full of boba had me excited to try a new boba shop in Seattle, but it did not meet my expectations. The boba itself is very good, but the drinks did not live up to it. We ordered the Jasmine Milk Tea, Brown Sugar Milk Tea, and Peach Oolong Tea. All of them had their own individual problems, with two of the drinks coming out lukewarm due to the hot tea. The brown sugar milk tea was just sweet milk with caramelized sugar on top, resulting in an overall 3.5 stars. The service was alright, ambience - not good. I had previously visited a Xing Fu Tang in Manhattan and Utah, and both of those locations were great, so I had high expectations. I was deeply disappointed with this particular location. For starters, the interior of the boba shop looked dirty and not well maintained, aside from the fortune bin in the front. The shop definitely needed a makeover, a new paint job at the very least. Upon arrival, I stood at the counter for a good 3 minutes and no one greeted me. I ended up interrupting 2 female employees (see photo) who were just standing there talking (this was on Monday, 06May2024 at 2pm). They had the audacity to shush me because they were in the middle of a conversation. A few minutes later, a male employee stepped in to take my order. He could tell I was upset and apologized. He was the only one working, so I appreciated that he took my order when he was done preparing the other orders. I ordered the signature brown sugar boba tea for myself and a lemon green tea (no ice) for my colleague. My drink was overly sweet and creamy, I drank about 1/4 of it and dumped the rest. My colleague didn't want ice, so they prepared a hot tea and didn't fill up the plastic cup. If we knew the tea would be hot, we would've just ordered hot lemon green tea so that it would at least come in an insulated cup! Horrible service and really bad drinks! Sometimes I feel like this location has consistency issues and I agree with alot of the other reviews that the inside looks somewhat dirty. I had tried their signature brown sugar milk tea and it was good. Not too sweet, boba pearls are chewy and fresh, the brown sugar was well balanced. However, they advertise their milk tea soft serve alot but I have gone three times and each time, they said that the machine was broken. Ok, so when I was finally able to try the soft serve, it was really bad. The dessert looked nothing like the advertisement photos and when you eat soft serve, you expect it to be creamy and decadent. The ice cream I got was icey and watery and not creamy at all. Maybe it tasted more like a milk tea slushie?
