5 stars mainly because they were one of two stores in Pleasanton, Dublin, AND San Ramon, that had the battery for my car fob in stock! The only other place in Dublin, (ACE), was over twice the price Aaron helped my husband earlier in the day, to check on supply & put one on hold for me. Later that day, after work, I went into True Value ~ & Aaron was there with a very cheery & friendly attitude ... and the battery (Was truly pleased also, 'cause the battery of our fob went out the day B-4 our trip!) ...... last Tuesday I needed a particular screw for a shoe repair Blake Stitch Sole Groover and without it I couldn't complete the job .... Yikesss ! ....... gulp! .... thanks to Mark and his years of experience selling and applying hardware when needed I was able to get the job done in no time .... he meticulously rummaged through trays of screws while I followed his instructions holding the various items so he could locate the proper screw until Bingo !! ... he found it and I was on my way with four of the little devils at 40 cents each and all for a $ 1 .60 plus tax !!!! .... man such a deal !! ..... thanks Mark ... you're the expert for sure ! read more

This is my new "go-to" hardware store. Amazing how just a little good customer service can make all the difference. I have always ordered my Eco bug spray from an online hardware store for about $11/bottle and had it shipped to my house due to difficulty finding it in stores. With the pandemic, they had nothing and weren't even taking orders. I searched the web and found nothing except on Amazon which of course was 3x overpriced and the product I received seemed as if it had been opened with less product and didn't perform as well. So, after the Amazon experience I was determined to find another store anywhere that wouldn't price gouge. True Value had it in stock online. They weren't shipping to home addresses right now, but did have free shipping to a nearby store. There were 2 stores in Pleasanton so I chose Workbench. After I placed my order, I sent an email asking if they had curbside pickup as my disability is chemical related and with the extra disinfecting during these times I'm not able to enter public places for any length of time. I was going to ask a friend to pick it up after work for me if they didn't have curbside. I received an email back that it was no problem at all and to ask for Chuck or James to bring it out. I did exactly that. I drove up, called the store and they brought it right out to my car for me. Our local OSH closed and not a huge fan of the 2 big box stores. This is my new favorite customer friendly store. I haven't been inside so cannot say anything about merchandise etc. However, with customer service like this from an online order straight to my car, I imagine they would provide the same excellent service with a smile inside. As the doors to the store opened, it appeared employees were all masked and following guidelines during these times as well and appreciate them looking out for the customers. Incidentally, I realized the hardware store I've been ordering from in the midwest was also a True Value store so overall I would have to say True Value is a chain I recognize as helpful and customer service oriented. DO NOT SHOP HERE. I have been an employee of downtown Pleasanton, for over 7 years and a neighbor across the street from them for years and these people want to charge me for parking in their lot during weekends on main. This parking lot (across the street from my work) was more than 70% empty the entire day I worked on Saturday and again Sunday when I arrived to cut my partners hair, they wanted us to pay $15 to park when we would be cutting his hair at my job for less than 30 minutes then leaving, and again this huge lot was empty besides 4 cars which belonged the the employees of the hardware store. I think that it's ABSURD that as an employee of downtown I was either required to pay $15 or couldn't park here and had to walk over 10 minutes to get to work on Saturday morning. Are you really hurting for money that badly that you would treat your neighbors this way?! I have always gone out of my way to shop small and spend money here for my hardware, kitchen and project needs because I want to support a local business and this is this thanks I get?! I get that they own the lot and can do whatever they want, cool use your space to make money on parking but off your fellow neighbors seems kind of crazy and RUDE. I will NEVER be shopping here again and I will make sure word spreads far and fast about this, and that every one of my clients does the same, hope the $15 in parking was worth losing a loyal customer and respect from your fellow neighbors. Guess it's back to Home Depot and Amazon...bummer. I'd also like to add that when I nicely went inside and asked about this on Sunday afternoon and stated to the nice young man working behind the counter as it's clearly not his new policy how unfortunate it was that they would treat their neighbors this way I was then met with extreme hostility from a very rude woman in the back snapping at me telling me I can speak to a manager and "how lucky I am that we've been allowed to park here for all this time"...I would love to speak to a manager and let them know as well how unhappy and disappointed I am in this treatment. read more

The best hardware store around! Helpful, friendly great to talk to. I broke a piece of of the sink, a Water Spray Aerator. Not a permanent piece. Something that you can add to save water. One of the gentlemen went straight to the place where they are displayed, grabbed a new one and rung me up. In and out in just a few minutes. I did get a quick look around and saw that they seem to have every odd item that y'all need. EXACTLY what a neighborhood hardware store should be. Love this place - their staff is incredibly friendly and forthcoming - making the shopping experience much better than for example at Home Depot or Lowe's. Although you won't find as rich of an inventory as at the bigger stores, they typically have something of everything that works for the project at hand. They also repair screens and take time to explain it in detail how to repair certain household problems. My go to place for True Value!! This hardware store is in the middle of town and I only went there the first time because I needed a box cutter at the last minute for a school project for my daughter. Oh my gosh, I can never go to Home Depot again. Seriously. I had no idea that this was how hardware stores are. The nicest man helped us make our selection, and keep in mind we're talking about a box cutter, and made sure we took advantage of an instant rebate that meant we got the best box cutter for less than the cheapie one. We also had our little dog with us and they were totally cool with it and even talked to her. The store looks really small, but they have everything you can imagine. I'm sure their prices are a tiny bit higher than Home Depot or Lowe's, but I know I'll never waste money on anything I buy there because they actually help you instead of hiding from you. I hope this comes across as I mean it.......their staff seems to be mature men that are old enough to be my father. Damn it's so nice getting advice from someone that you know has probably done exactly what you are trying to do instead of some kid that still lives at home and has never had to deal with any sort of home improvement. I seriously mean neither generation any disrespect, and found it so wonderful that I was getting advice from someone who knew what they were talking about from experience. Love this place. This is a 5 if you understand (or can remember) that this is the way hardware stores used to be. This is a 1 or 2 if you grew up knowing your only choices are Lowes or Home Depot. If you're part of the later generation, you come here when you need something fixed but don't know how to do it. The staff here is very knowledgeable and they'll greet you and ask if they can help you. Don't be intimidated if you're not used to this. Just explain what you need or describe the problem that you're trying to solve, and they'll either take you to where they keep the item you need, or take some time to help you figure out your problem. This is in contrary to Lowes or Home Depot where a lot of the folks are there part time and really don't know what they're talking about, but at best know where to direct you (or not). The items in the store might be a little outdated, but only on 1 occassion did they not have what I needed. And their customer service is great. I had a set of desk keys I needed made, but they didn't work. They gave it another go, even so far as making another key with a different blank. And bonus: this place is next to the neighborhood crack house named Donut King :) read more

We needed a new faucet for our kitchen sink, and I found a coupon in our Entertainment Book for this place. I was shocked to see that many of their faucets were either open or looked like they had been sitting on the shelves there for 20 years. I'm not joking. Super dusty, old looking, just gross. Who buys a brass plated kitchen faucet anymore, anyway? Oh wait, that style was from the early 80's....and I assure you, that's how long it's been sitting there. No thanks! I go to both True Value's in Pleasanton and love them equally, but today I went to the True Value on Main and bought the last Spirit BBQ for my husband. I didn't have a truck to move it, so the OWNER waited for me to pick up my daughter at art, then followed me home in his truck with the BBQ, which he assembled and put in my garage! These guys are simply the BEST! I love being able to support local business people rather than going to the big box hardware stores. I'm normally generous in writing reviews, but my first experience here wasn't good. Some of the hardware was really high on shelves so it was hard to reach. NO ONE even bothered to ask me if i needed help with anything (shouldn't have been that hard since I was only 1 one 2 customers there). Then, this pimply face blond kid rang up my items when I was done (probly the same kid Brad was speaking of). He says nothing to me... then he THROWS the bag like a hackey sack onto the counter instead of handing it to me. Trying NOT to think anything of it, I say "thank you"... he just mugs me with a mean look instead of saying anything. I've got to agree with the previous poster. This place is a hidden gem that I frequent quite a bit for random things I need every now and then. It's right across the parking lot from Monument Car Parts, another place I go to quite a bit. Both these places have an old school feel; from the small cramped atmosphere, to the old timers who work there. It's a much different feel than say Home Depot or Lowes and that's one thing I love about it. And although this place is on the small side, I have never left there empty handed. They always have what I am looking for and it's always a bargain of a deal. The service there is top notch as well. The old timers there are always very helpful and extremely friendly. A couple times they have happily helped me solve what ever problem I am tackling on that day. This is a great little place that I will continue to frequent. Let's just hope they never get ran out by the corporate places like Home Depot, etc. If they continue the service they give each and everyone they serve, then I doubt they'll have to worry about that. read more

I was looking for something for my garden. I called Home Depot and after they transferred me around twice playing telephone tag, I finally was connected to the correct department. I hear the the girl say Garden...and then she disconnects me. So i said they heck with this. I called the the Local hardware store.Of course they had it . The man told me his name and told me he was starring right at the item. I went right over. There are always a few older gentlemen there behind the counter. They are courteous and helpful and usually walk you over to the item you need. A lot of the younger people may not realize this, but this is how all stores were back in the 1960's and 1970's before they got pushed out by the big box stores with the cheap imported items. Sales people were helpful and they waited on you. They enjoyed helping you and were proud of their jobs.They were your neighbors. This is that kind of store. So if you are not use to being polite and people smiling and asking how they can help you, don't shop here. But if you want good service and fair prices and nice people serving you, come here. From now on I will always check with them first. read more
