Wolfy's is a great place to get a true Chicago style hot dog. Up in Wisconsin we put cheese and sauer kraut on our dogs which makes them really fattening and heavy. Wolfy's puts a mix of veggies and pickle including celery salt for a perfect light taste. Having said that, I do get their cheese fries from time to time (I'm a cheese head, come on). The people running the counter are really fast and seem to enjoy the unique people from all walks that are stopping in on a regular basis. The decor has a sixties vibe but is very clean. You don't walk out feeling greasy. I met the owner Pete once or twice and he seems to take a lot of pride in his shop. He's invited me to their other location but I rarely get out to the burbs. This is one of those places I have have gone to the whole time I have been in Chicago. This is the classic hot dog place, all of the food you can expect and also a good Greek chicken. The prices are in line with all of the other places in the area, and they say to find the best places for fast food is look for the cops and the cabbies. I give it five stars. My folks took me there for a hot dog treat as a young child. I had lunch there many times in high school. As a young newlywed my wife and I had many enjoyable meals there. Wolfy's owners and operators, thank you for proving me wrong. Not all fondly remembered oral treats from my 1960s to 1970s childhood have aged badly, grown the lesser with cost-cutting, inattention and lethargy. Wolfy's has actually improved while local then-rivals Fluky's. Paul's Umbrella and many more have slid down into the Great Grease Trap beyond. Snappy skinned dogs, juicy burgers, delicious Italian sausage, crisp, fresh fries and special meal package pricing all rate high, of course. What strikes me every time I visit Wolfy's is the politeness of the Wolfy's staff, the cleanliness of the restaurant itself (no burned oil stink and slippery, slimy surfaces here!) and so the overall feeling of goodness, of wholesomeness imparted. Tried this place out while in Rogers Park. It was really good. Got a couple of Chicago Dogs and the fries. Everything exceeded my expectations and I know why they have been around for "200 years". Frys were crispy and the dogs were great. It was busy, but the service was fast and the kitchen was very efficient. I love trying out 'new to me' old standbys. Every time I am even near Chicago, my thoughts go to Wolfy's. Their hot hogs are perfect. The snappy outside crunch, with the soft sesame bun. It does not matter what you get on the dogs, it is all fresh & delicious. The burgers are moist, juicy & so very flavorful. I love their french fries, the perfect cook. They are tan & crispy on the outside & light and flaky on the inside. Eat them plain or get them loaded up with all the toppings. Let's not forget onion rings. These are lightly battered, deep fried, not greasy "O's" from the Angels themselves. It doesn't matter if I am only in the area for the day, I get there just as quick as I can & always look forward to my next visit. What's a girl to do? I can't believe it has taken me this long to review Wolf's. I have been going there since I was in my 20's and I am positively geriatric now. When I first got married we moved about 4 or 6 houses north of Wolfy's. I remember my mother being concerned that our apartment would smell like hot dogs and french fries. No such luck. Well that was 26 years ago, and I was already a long time customer. I LOVE Wolfy's hot dogs. Always have, always will (unless they make some crazy changes). I am faithful to the dog, but the hubby orders various things. At the moment he is on a Philly cheese steak kick. He likes it (obviously) and as he is originally an east coaster, I assume that is a pretty good review!! It is always clean, which is amazing considering it is most often haunted by teens from Mather H.S. For that reason (the haunting), I tend to get my orders to go. So if you're heading east bound on Peterson after exiting the Edens, you'll run into this fantastic and historic little hotdog joint about a mile down. I'd heard about Wolfy's, seen the sign in film and pics but had never eaten there....astonishingly, as much as I travel around Chicagoland, don't think i've ever driven past the place, either. Not by design, I literally just happened upon the place as I was looking for some lunch on this stretch of Peterson. It took about a nanosecond to decide this would be my lunchtime dining destination. Good looking menu featuring every conceivable item you'd think of for this sort of drive-in type place....char grilled dogs, beefs, polish, gyros, grilled hamburgers, greek chicken, fantastic crispy french fries, milk shakes, etc, etc; it's easy to see how a place like this has survived in Chicago for nearly a half Century. I went w the "homemade, fresh daily" Italian Beef, dipped, w. hot peppers and it was outstanding. The dogs looked very good too and I like how they have several books titled "No Ketchup on a hot dog" within eye site of the counter where you order. Well in. Vienna Beef and poppy seed buns at their best! Wolfy's has been one of my favorite places to eat since I started eating solid food! I remember when my parents asked me where do you want to eat tonight? I'd always say WOLFY'S!!!!!!!! I never forgot about this place, but when we moved away to the burbs for a while I wasn't able to go... so it sadly became an out of site out of mind type of thing. Now I am back in the city, and luckily one day while driving I came across it and all the wonderful Wolfy's memories came back! Ordered a dog, fries, and a drink for around $6. Food was good and not much of a wait. Only complaint is the fries needed extra salt. Cops love to hang out here for whatever reason. Every time I go there's at least five cops which makes me paranoid even though I know I'm not doing anything. Bathroom is in the back of the kitchen so it is a bit awkward to get to, but from what I saw of the kitchen it did look pretty clean. There is a small parking area which is a plus. read more

I don't make it out for hot dogs all that often. Something about what it does to my breath. Wolfy's, however, was worth the afternoon of hot dog breath. I got the char-dog, and it was stellar. The dog was just charred enough, and all the fixin's were fresh and crisp. The side of fries was good too. They serve big fat steak fries...far better than those wimpy little ones. My fiance and I tried this place after driving by and we were quite pleased. Burgers were fresh and hot off the grill, chardogs had nice flavor, their new banana chocolate malt was good (a little overpowered by the banana), and it was an overall good experience. We like older establishments/diners and this was a good, clean place and the service was friendly and fast. Well, this was first of three Chicago dog places we tried today and clearly the best of the three!!! I highly recommend wolfy's !!!

I would give it three stars, but my six year old would give it 5 so we split the difference. I feel so much better taking him to Wolfy's then some disgusting place like McDonald's. Plus they have a giant hotdog outside. It's a little chunk of old Chicago that hasn't given way. I always see Chicago's finest in here getting chow, definitely a good sign. The place is clean, the service excellent--everything buzzes along in a quite orderly and pleasant fashion. Hamburgers, hotdogs, french fries, all the typical stuff that's cheap and fast but also fresh, clean and tasty. Now by fresh, I don't mean from farm to fork--it's fast fare for sure, but it doesn't sit around, it's made to order, hot and good. I love the onion rings and they make shakes the old-fashioned way and top them with plenty of whipped cream--very delicious! The burritos are decent, I've ordered the Greek chicken with success, and my boy loves the dogs. Great fast food, and no trans fat, either. read more

They always manage to have great flavors, good ingredients and it's about as fresh as this type of food can come. The main reason I give this place 5 stars is because of the staff. Even though Wolfys is sooooo close to not being Chicago and being in Lincolnwood I cannot help but call it a Chicago staple. I recommend a Chicago style dog and a chicken sandwich, grilled not fried. Wolfy's is a classic Chicago hot dog stand with a great sign. There's a lot of history at this joint. The building and grounds are kept clean and there is adequate parking. However, it can be difficult to negotiate a left turn into or out of the lot. There's no left turn lane and Peterson is well traveled. Double door (air lock) entry doors lead you into the restaurant. The menu board, counter and kitchen areas are nice and clean. Counter people are courteous, but lack personality and interaction with patrons. Public bathroom is accessed behind the service counter and through the back room. Fixed seating is a little tight for a typical fast food patron. I ordered an Italian Beef combo, which includes fries (not fresh cut) and fountain drink. There was no extra charge for sweet peppers. The beef was excellent--probably the best I've ever had. I will definately be back for another. I came back for a drink refill and was surprised they charged for them, but when I handed over the cash, the owner asked me to put it in the charity contribution box on the counter. A nice gesture. There's a sign on the wall that says, "No Loitering, seating limited to 20 minutes." I can understand why they would feel it necessary to have this sign, but it seems tacky to me. If you've never been, Wolfy's is definately worth a try. I'll be back for the Italian Beef. read more

I have been going to Wolfy's for years..........always had a solid Chicago hot dog and great food. The french fries are OK, I just don't like the small skinny fries.......most places have those and need to change that! Wolfy's.........I LOVE your food........but lately the one cashier guy has been kind of rude. and whats with NO CREDIT card? That's crap. It's not like you're a small little hot dog stand. You are an established restaurant........get with the times! He goes "we don't take credit card, there is an ATM over there". Diner looking. But the construction/repairs going on at the time was hard to look past. You order at the counter and they bring it to your seat. Parking and seating available. which is always a plus. Hot dogs on poppy seed buns which are soft not mushy. The hot dog taste good, has a thicker skin but does get lost in the bun. Lots of condiments available; giant sports pepper, celery salt, pickles, tomatoes are fresh, relish is good. Fries are frozen and horrible: bland, no taste, actually not edible. After softball games in my childhood, we always went out to eat. Sometimes with the team, sometimes without... my FAVORITE place to go was WOLFY'S!!! Walking in, especially after a win, was one of the best feelings in the world. I'd usually order a hot dog and fries and sit with my teammates and/or mother and happily celebrate a successful day. I rarely come to wolfy's anymore (I live further south now, it used to be right down the street when I was growing up), but nostalgia never fails. Going to wolfy's STILL makes me happy. The difference is, now I can appreciate the yummy-ness of the hot dogs, fries, and burgers. It's one of my favorite hot dog places, maybe second to superdawg. read more

Years ago I noticed the giant Wolfy's sign on Peterson and had to stop in to try their hot dogs. YUM! They are still my 2nd favorite place to get hot dogs in the city. The fries are pretty good, they carry that cinnamon hot dog gum(!), the space is very clean, the prices are good and I like the funny hot dog artwork on the walls. My fiancee and I were craving hot dogs, so while running errands, we stopped by Wolfy's. After perusing the menu, we couldn't resist the polishes instead. Got one polish dog meal with cheese fries and another polish (my fiancee always share the fries/drink) for $10. YUMMY polish!!! Slightly charred, juicy, and filled with plump tomatoes and pickles. In my constant pursuit for the best Chicago dog, I felt utterly compelled to stop by Wolfy's and give their dog a whirl. Well, along with it being a classic Chicago institution, they serve up a hell of a dog. I stopped by for dinner and was pleasantly surprised and joyed that they serve the infamous 2-dog special...but I was a little taken back by the price being $6.59. Nonetheless, when I got the dogs, I understood why....they are fat as hell! I don't know if Vienna beef actually makes different circumferences of hot dogs, but these mutha's were huge. As well, the fixings were super well executed, with a fresh tomato and huge pickle and a generous shake of celery salt. I will say, however, that the 2-dog special was almost too much!
