Service was friendly. Looked like a husband and wife team. We all had the loaded Chicago dog, fries and 2 chicken tender special with a drink for 10.00. We loved it! 1950's vibe. First thing first. This place is a lovely little hole in the wall place. The place could use a refresher, but it doesn't subtract from good food a decent price. There is no dine in, I suggest getting a steering wheel table. The lady behind the counter is always a pleasure to chat with. I go to this place often for the two hot dog special that comes with fries and a drink for $7.99. Today, I also decided to try the polish sausage done up Maxwell Style, grilled onions, mustard and hot peppers. The polish was charred and had plenty of grilled onions, mustard and hot peppers all worked perfectly together. The dogs are a thing of beautiful. I think they even cut the pickle spears so you can get everything in one bite. Everything is really fresh and the fries were hot and crispy, with the right amount of salt. I would say my own complaint is the peppers aren't spicy enough for me. But that's a me thing. read more

Let's be honest the there is one thing this place is lacking and it is ambiance. The service was what one would expect from a Chicago Hot Dog and Polish stand. Had the craving for some fast food and this place as I was driving so I decided to stop by and try this place out. The place is pretty small and a dive and sometimes those are the gems. Its right on the corner and also has a small parking lot in front. Kinda small inside but they do have a few tables. I ordered the two hot dogs special with fries and a drink. Orders are taken pretty quickly and the food is also prepared just as fast. The food was good and about what I expected for the neighborhood hot dog stand, not a bad price of $4.99 not including the drink. If I could give less than 1 star, I would. First of all the place is filthy and run down. I order 2 hot dogs. I told the woman behind the counter 3 times No celery salt and No peppers. I told her 3 times! When food came out, guess what was on my hot dogs! I moved to Jefferson Park about 13 years ago. The day I moved into my house, my cousin Ellyn asked me if there was some good hot dog places around here. In a desperate attempt to look cool I almost instantaneously said yes. So we set forth on our journey not knowing where the hell I was going. I was a smart kid, I knew I was bound to hit something. There it was, Dukes, in all its glory. Much to my demise, my cousin did not have any money but that didn't stop us from having a feast. That's when I fell in love with Dukes. The decor of the place isn't what makes it good. Its the fantastic, perfectly cooked, made to order food. The 2 hot dog with french fries special is my advice for you to try. They sell all sorts of awesome things too. To name a few: Italian beef (dry for me), Italian sausage's and flavorful), The combo (beef and sausage...get it dry), Milkshakes, Chicken pita, fried mushrooms, and polish sausages. So since we have established about the food. The service is awesome. Cathy (Chick at the counter) has watched us all grow up and is super friendly. Every time I go without my dad, they almost never forget to send me with a "hello from Dukes". The food is cooked fast and with all the fixings you want. They have a parking lot, accessible from public transport(85a, or 85 going towards the terminal). Located right on the corner on Central and Elston, how convenient! I agree with the others... Cathy, the rudest person I've ever met says it's still cooking even though she forgot to put steak sandwich on grill...asked for owner info and she told me to leave...obviously I'm not the first on yelp to mention how bad of service this is. Called owner next day and he says "what do you want me to do about it" This lack of responsibility for your staff and there actions won't go unnoticed. As others have said, this place is filthy. Watch out when using a credit card here. I ordered a combo meal, which came to $8.83. This was the final amount shown on the register and included taxes. When I looked at the receipt, the total was $9.09. I asked why the amounts were different and they told me that they added credit card processing fee. It is ILLEGAL to show one price on the register and then charge a higher price on the credit card WITHOUT informing the customer. The amount is very small and I understand that some of these business are struggling, but this is wrong. I cancelled my order and told her this is illegal. She did not care and just ignored me. Just a few blocks from home, this is my neighborhood hot dog stand, if you live in the city you probably have one too. I've eaten here more times than I could ever count and absolutely love two of their many great items: 1. French Fries, some of the best in the city, always served hot, consistently fried to perfection. 2. Fish Sandwich, I absolutely love a nicely fried fish sandwich and this is one of my favorites. The greenish tartar sauce which is wonderful adds to the pleasure. They also have a double fish which is a nice challenge. Much more than a great hot dog stand, the burgers and Italian beef are quite good as well. The staff is pretty much down to business, little emotion here, fine tuned operation, of all the times I've been here I don't think they have every made an error on my order. Duke's is the type of place you can bring someone on a job interview, first date, or even a playdate. Cathy, who serves as a maternal figure to most kids in the area, will make you feel at home and comfortable from the moment you sit down to the moment you get up to go grab a squirt of ketchup. Simply put, it's a stellar, versatile establishment, forcing you to overlook any and all health code violations. In response to Cindy R's October of 2014 review, I will say that Duke's is very likely responding to the American obesity epidemic by reducing portion sizing and even going the extra mile by making their food less appealing, forcing people to eat less. I for one applaud Duke's; as someone who has struggled deeply with obesity and as a plastic surgeon, I appreciate their efforts and have seen first hand the fruits of their labor. Duke's is still pretty dumpy looking, but the Italian Beef and fries are still good. Christopher tried the gyros and was underwhelmed. He said it was way too greasy. DROOOOOOOOL! The hot dogs are perfectly Chicago, the fries crispy and light, and the gardiniera fresh (the owners make it themselves!!!! AWESOME) We got a spread of food since there were so many of us and everything I ate was DELISH. My fave parts of Duke's were the sides: I couldn't stop eating the cheese fries with gardiniera on top, fried mushrooms, and the best corn dogs I've ever had (mini corn dogs are considered a side when you're inhaling a huge italian beef!) The cornmeal on the mini corn dogs are mildly sweet and cooked to perfection, pairing so well with that steamy hot dog in the middle. Who knew I could say so much about a corn dog?!?!
