Addictive, great food, beautiful ingredients, fabulous coffee. Always convenient on my way to work. Small business owners trying to cheer up my dreary morning commute is a huge deal for me. This is the kind of place where not only do I want to chime in passionately, but I feel this need to defend the place against all of the following types of reviews: Annoying review #1: "...I read about this place and decided to drive from far away, but they did not have the 80 varieties of cream cheese like they do at my (insert Danville chain) bagel place!" #2: "I had to stand in line for like 10 minutes and did I mention I have eight children? I was highly inconvenienced because of the unique system of having to stand in line to order and then *wait* (with said eight children) the four minutes for them to freshly prepare your food..." #3: "I had to pay TWO DOLLARS for a bagel and I don't understand that! Add an organic freshly-scrambled egg, cheddar, and coffee to go and it's like SIX DOLLARS!!!" #4: "I'm from NEW YORK. Did I mention I'm from New York? I don't know if anyone has ever told you this but..... you just CAN'T GET A GOOD BAGEL OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK. Ugh I miss New York SO MUCH. Welp, I might be betraying my east coast bagel roots, but these are some gosh darn good bagels. Montreal-style, but not quite Montreal, these are a bit thinner and denser than their NYC cousins. With a crisp edge and a nice bite, these guys are just small enough that the bagel alone doesn't fill you up (*cough cough* NY bagel) and you can have a sandwich of it. Eaten more of the menu than I'd care to admit, but will anyway, you can't go wrong here. From standards such as lox and cream cheese, chopped liver or whitefish salad, to more hip twists like the fried chicken with slaw (sandwich). Even the standard egg & cheese is elevated - just add the braised greens. Wash it down with fresh squeezed OJ, Flying Goat Coffee, or an egg cream. Don't mind the line, it's rare there isn't one, and it's worth the wait. read more

I admit that I'm a bagel amateur, but I do declare that Beauty's Bagels are really delicious. Apparently Montreal-style means that they are boiled in honey water and then baked in a wood-fire oven. Sounds like a recipe for a foodinista's delight. Who doesn't like food that's wood-fired? I would wood-fire myself if I could. The sizing is odd, though I heard through the bagel vine that typically the hole is big and the bagel small. This is fine with plain bagels. but when getting them with the smoked trout or lox they have, it ends up being a pricey bite for such a small little bagel. I suppose the practical solution would be to grab a few and make your own lox sandwiches at home. Then you'd miss out on the charming and sunny space, with cuter than thou hipsters and funky furniture. Your choice. I want to love this place, so I am hoping that the next time I go there, I can up the stars. They claim to be Montreal style bagels close to St. Viateur, but it's not the case. When you bite into a Montreal bagel, whether it's St. Viateur or Fairmount, it's so soft and chewy, almost like a donut. Beauty Bagels are really chewy and they don't have that soft texture. Also, Montreal bagels are good for two days and then you need to cut them in half, freeze them, in a week you can toast them and they taste the same. Beauty Bagels, they harden by the second day and you frozen one taste bland when you toast it back to life. I think they are the closest bagel shop to a Montreal style, but not a Montreal bagel replacement. I was pretty disappointed by Beauty's Bagel Shop. I was pumped to have a new bagel shop in the neighborhood. I thought it would be a great alternative to cheap donuts or a heavy brunch. However, the overpriced bagels and painfully hip décor at Beauty's left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I finally made it into the shop on my second attempt. The first was at 8:30am on a Saturday and the line was out the door. NO THANK YOU. Second time was around 9:30am on a Sunday. Not much of a line but everything did run super slow. I had enough time to take it all in. - Cross stitch, check. - Terrariums, check. - Moss state of California on the wall, check. - Mason jars, check. - Super hip, probably overeducated employees, check. Just a little heavy on the Pinterest DIY chic aesthetic. I may have been ok with this had everything not been so overpriced. Walk outside. Take a look around. Bring something to the community that the community can actually enjoy. This shop belongs in the Mission where tech folk can Instagram about it and can actually afford the $4 toasted bagels with cream cheese. I live just down the street from this shop (southward), and whenever I walk by, it's like peering in to watch gentrification happen. Beauty's is not in a great neighborhood--not terrible, but not great--and I would say it's not uncommon for me to see more homeless people on my way to it than homeful. Beauty's, though, is like a cornucopia of creative class tattoo-sporting, young parent infant bustling, sundress and fixie hipsters. Beauty's is a south-of-40th hot spot for good reason. Not only do they have great bagels, which in California seems to be some kind of mythic grail rumored by some but tasted by no one, they make those bagels into delish sandwiches (I'm salivating at the thought of the lox right now) and serve them next to really terrific coffee. To boot, they have all the Jewish deli fixins you'd expect (including latkes around Hannukah!). And, to top it off, the space is really gorgeous--full of natural light and little plants, and there are some tables outside too. The fact is that hipsters know their coffee, and they know their food, and they know their Jews. Trust the bustle and the disposable income, and try a bagel. read more

It was just one big old swoon fest from start to finish. Listen up. You could do much much worse eating bagels elsewhere than at this place. In short, I liked it a lot, and so did my wife. Overpriced and mechanical 'Noah's Bagels' this was NOT! Think about it. Why go to a chain when you can support your local neighborhood business? The world is not one big mall, or haven't you heard...? Okay so we make it a point to truck all the way from the peninsula to Berzerkly and environs (Oakland, actually) to get a taste of what Beautys Bagel Shop has to offer. My wife got an email which alerted her to the new bagel place (four days old as of our visit) and as the dutiful hubby, I was supportive. Plus I love bagels. Hungry tummies in tow, we hazard the mystery of the East Bay freeways and bizarrely righteous traffic (hey give a guy a break, what is this - LA???!!) and after a couple of stops and a few turns, we find ideal parking almost in front of Beautys Bagel Shop. After ordering, our food was ready within minutes. I had an everything bagel with cream cheese, coffee, salad (romaine, tomato, avocado dressing, bagel croutons and bagel seeds) and soup (a corn chowderish concoction). Everything was fresh and tasty. The combination of seeds and salt on the perfectly textured (easy to eat, slightly sweet and not at all rubbery or tough) everything bagel perfectly complimented the soup and salad combination. Plus the coffee was good. And I have had the over-roasted, over-priced and bitter beans from so-called connoisseur baristas at a place or two in San Francisco's Financial District so I know of which I speak. This was definitely NOT that. I found the coffee delicate, well-rounded and perfect. One of the owners/founders of the place, Blake came over to talk to us. He's hard working and dedicated - as is his staff. We gave him our opinion - that the charming decor was tastefully bohemian and the food was very satisfying. Oh almost forgot, our conversation turned to some eateries in New York and we talked about big pickles (which they have at Beautys) and pickled green tomatoes, which they also have and we got to sample and I have to say they were superb! Loved loved loved them. In time I am sure we will return and figure out what they serve the tomatoes with and we'll order appropriately. Overall, we liked the place and wish the new business well. It's in a good location. There's wifi and just enough places to sit. Hopefully, a table for four won't be hogged by some lonely laptop junkie trying to hammer out the Great American Novel (or Great American Screenplay) and you'll get a place to sit to enjoy your fresh food. so not impressed... when I heard of the hipster bagel shop I thought GREAT, we'll get some decent bagels in this town. So I go with my 2.5 year old son one morning. Stood in line, first time so a little confused by the offerings I foolishly ventured to ask the young woman behind the counter if they had any raisin bagels. You would have thought I'd asked for a BLT in a Synagogue. I swear she could barely surpress her eye roll as she proceeded to lecture me on Montreal Bagels... I was kinda done after that. So I had an onion bagel with some kind of fancy cream cheese and to be honest it tasted something like I would have made at home and been sorely disappointed by. flavorless, dry and tough and the cream cheese was no different than Noah's whipped crap. I was so excited to try this place, especially since they learned from the most reputed bagel shop in Montreal. Unfortunately, they didn't succeed in replicating the yummy chewy and tasty bagels I grew to love and crave. So the bagels were a disappointment, but they did make me the best cappuccino I've ever had! And on the 8th day, God created Beauty's Bagels! You would drive right on by and miss them if you weren't looking. I almost did. What a lost chance at a slice of heaven that might be... I Loves Beautys! What a little gem! Makes the world a better place, one bagel at a time. Let me say this, I never thought I'd be writing a review on a bagel place. I eat bagels all the time and usually they are pretty good at my favorite places, often lackluster but quick and easy. But Beautys goes way beyond, into another realm of goodness. Beautys is from another planet! So, I wander in. The first thing is the cute and friendly staff. There is a certain glow I notice that you just only see when folks are really happy at their job. The vibe is warm and inviting, the cashier was rockin! I'm diggin it already... I order an everything bagel with egg and swiss, because I see they use free-range eggs. Ooo, I like that. Then she asks if I want a drink, well usually no, but she mentions the soda is the good stuff. I don't even drink soda, ever. But I trust her and low and behold, this stuff is pure juice and carbonation, no added nothing, and they have it in pineapple. It was absolutely delicious. I use the bathroom, it is super clean and even tastefully decorated. Watch out tho, that sink water is hot! The pride in service shows at Beautys. Then comes the bagel. A decent amount of perfectly cooked egg. But that everything bagel, whew, that sucker has like cardamon and fennel seeds or something I can't quite put my finger on, and is boiled in honey water then roasted with just a tad of butter. My Lord, is it good. Fantastic actually. Out of this world, every bite. The eggs were flawless twice in a row, and I am super picky about my eggs. Wow, I gotta get another. The raisin cinnamon with cream cheese is again dynamite. Today I return just to see if it was all a dream. I order the same darn things. They were once again fabulous, perfect, delightful. The kind of bagels you dream about. The radio was playing "I got a spell on you" and that song was right on, I was in a dream state! As I finished eating, started Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing." I shouldn't even go there man, but seriously every bite was hitting some serious pleasure receptors. This culinary journey became a thing of indescribable pleasure! Overpriced. Overcrowded. Over it. (+ew!) We were so excited to see a new breakfast place open up in the neighborhood. And I looked forward to stopping by on my morning walk to BART for an iced coffee. 1st time I went (alone), it was chilly so I figured I go for a latte rather than something cold. Handed the cashier a 5$ and got change back (as in the coffee was $4+). The latte was so small (and luke warm) that I finished it before I reached 40th St. 2nd time I went (with my boyfriend), we stopped in to grab something on our way to the city. We ordered a large iced coffee and 2 bagels with cream cheese -- simple enough, right? The coffee was small (and mostly ice). When I asked one of the cashier who had rung us up, she rudely remarked, "there's only one size!" and looked at me like I was crazy to want more than 8oz. of coffee. It was over $10 for 2 bagels and an iced coffee, way too much if you ask me (especially because the bagels were bland and tasted stale). Also, and this grossed me out. While waiting in line to order our overpriced, bland breakfast on the go, a previous customer came back in the store and walked up to the counter to complain about her order. She handed the bag of bagels to one of the employees and said that all of the bagels were wrong. -- She had ordered 12 bagels so she must have gone through them in the car or at home to realize all 12 jumbled in a bag together were wrong. The employee PUT THOSE BAGELS BACK into the wire bins to be sold to future customers after the previous customer had touched all of them. ew. It's flu season you guys, and there are way too many a**hats who don't wash their hands. If you're going to dine there, bring some airborne and coffee from home. read more

I have driven by this place many times before always seeing lines of ppl standing outside their door....Wow, their bagels must be good. Right? So, this Saturday morning my S.O. and I decided that we stood stand in line with the rest of the lemmings. I needed 15 minutes of my time just to get 1/2 doz poppy seed bagels in a brown paper bag to go. $8.50/1/2 doz. Their bagels have a lot of poppy seeds....a plus. They were received warm, fresh out of their wood fired ovens....a plus. They were a bit small for the $1.50 per price tag......not a plus, not a negative. Standing in line, waiting just to get a few 'average' bagels.....definitely a negative. In the end, to sum it up, the flavor of these bagels are only 'Meh, I've had better'. Maybe b/c Beauty's is in the "World famous Temescal Food Ghetto (or near enough)", with their upscale, casual, and trendy look & vibe, and the long line of millennials & hipsters, you might be fooled into the expectation of something really, really special. You know, a real dining experience, an "It's all about the Bagel" kind of experience. Sorry, it's not. Their's not bad, but with the entire scene wrapped around the (*almost) famous wood-fired bagel concept, it just doesn't add up. Without the hype,fuss, and noisy crowd, and a less than 2 miles away, the House of Bagels, in tiny Montclair, has a) much more bagel flavor, b) are bigger, and c) Cost $0.25 less, without any line what-so-ever. No, the Montclair location has zero personality, more like 'an empty donut shop' kinda vibe, but I am not there to get my vibe on, I there to get great bagels. Beauty's bagels still do have significantly more poppy seeds. I do want to shout out that their menu looks really, really good, and the employees really were hustling in order to get through the crowd. They were super courteous and seemed very efficient. It seems to be a nice comfortable place to hang out and share the fellowship of food with friends and loved ones. I hope that I didn't hurt anyone's feelings with this not 5 star narrative, but for me "It's all about the bagel".......nothing else really matters. read more

I showed up about 2 hours into their first day open, so I'll likely be back to write a longer review once they have their sea legs and skip reviewing what I'm guessing were first-day glitches. The bagels were fresh, of course and nicely chewy for me. I don't think I ever had fire-baked before, and I liked the pizza-crust vibe they gave off. I imagined I could taste the honey, but that might be wishful thinking or a hint of the jam. I'll be back - the price is reasonable for a high-end version of a bread I love, esp. when fresh. I liked the ample toppings and choice of non-coffee bevvies - they don't yet have bagels to go, so I got a simple everything with strawberry jam. The menu also featured scallion cream cheese, and I confess to not being a cc fan. Three different salads looked great for lunch, and the timing was not quite right for me in the am to try one. The menu's a little more adventurous than my selection today - looking fwd to trying the breakfast sandwiches later this week. The interior is clean, and I like the communal bar. I'm hoping that the crowds dissipate so this can be a chill place to grab breakfast on my way to work. Being on the Telegraph corridor is a plus for easy accessibility! The people were friendly, even with a line out the door, and I hope they stay that way. I stopped in one weekday morning. I got to the counter ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese and tomatoes. The counter girl rudely announces to me that tomatoes are not in season. I rarely give five star reviews, but here goes! I am a NJ transplant, who has been seeking the perfect Bay Area bagel for 13+ years. Today, I finally found it. These are not New York-style bagels; they are Montreal-style. This means they are smaller, denser, and sweeter, but still have that great crispy exterior, and jaw-massaging, chewy interior. The slight sweetness comes from boiling in honey water, as opposed to the regular water of NY or NJ bagels. Another mark of an excellent bagelry is the presence of the bialy and the lack of anything resembling a pumpkin, jalapeno/cheese, or chocolate-chip bagel. Just plain, onion, everything, wheat-sesame, and a few savory others here. None of that blueberry crap you see at the impostors. Sandwiches feature things like house-smoked salmon or chopped liver, and thickly-sliced pickles. The only downside on a Sunday morning was parking. Thank you, Beauty's Bagel, for ending my quest. I reserve my consumption of gluten for eating here. Delicious bagel sandwiches, homemade schmear and preserves. And I didn't know what chicken scrapple was before Beauty's, but now I that I've had it, I realize I hadn't really been living. Even with a line, the service is quick and friendly, people are smiling (in between chewing), the children are laughing, and the dog or two outside is just as happy as can be--I mean, without a bagel in his/her mouth. (Our beagle has tried to sneak inside a few times.) Simply put, it's a great place with great food and a positive vibe--not just composting and use of local ingredients, but owners who talk to their customers and care about what they're making and feeding the community. I feel like when we go here, it's some of the best of Oakland. read more

As a native New Yorker, there is no such thing as an authentic NY bagel outside of NY. And, while Beauty's does not make NY bagels, nor does it proclaim to, their bagels are, nonetheless, delicious. Fresh, soft, and chewy. Best of all, as a lox addict, theirs is some of the best I've had - soft, super fresh, super flavorful, and not overly salty. Their chive cream cheese is especially good, and goes well with lox. My fave bagel is the salt and pepper -just a hint of salt, so as not to overpower the taste buds. I also LOVE their sour pickles! So on my walk to bart this morning there was a group of questionables hanging out on my normal route so I quickly made a detour down the long way and boy was I glad I did. I was just thinking how I never walk this way when I came across a pack of hipsters and their bikes grazing in front of what looked like an old laundromat. Wood-fired bagels a sign read, say what bagels I thought, me thinks I need a bagel right now. The place is cute and airy with a bunch of natural light, bad for vamps but a draw for the hips. Luckily most of them took their food to go so I didn't mind the clientele as much. The prices we a bit outrageous 10 something for a lock & caper bagel, I asked for some avocado to be added to it (extra) and wasn't very impressed when I was handed my meal with glaring brown avocado bits all over, on top of that it was salt and pepper'd - I would prefer to salt my own meal thank you (me likes no salt at all). The locks were really good as well as the poppy bagel I got - nice and fluffy. I really wasn't impressed with the coffee - I got a macchiato and latte that tasted like only milk to go. The best part of the place and reason I would probably go back is their pickles - yum'o and their gluten free pastries. I'm not gluten free but those samples I had were mighty fine - coconut scones and bundt cake oolala. Everyone who worked there was super nice and welcoming too. I guess this place has only been open for 2 months now but was a great find. I think I will be taking detours more often. read more

Called for a replacement and was maltreated by a very rude supervisor who promised a refund which I never received. DoorDash didn't even have it on record. Don't trust them. The secret is definitely out on this casual bagel and sandwich joint, and rightly so. *Perfect* bagels with thoughtfully crafted sandwiches in a cozy and clean restaurant vibe. If I started every Saturday with a stop at Beauty's, I wouldn't be mad about it. THE FOOD: Honestly, you could put cardboard and butter between these little nuggets from heaven, and I would still say it was delicious. Wood fired bagels with just the perfect balance of chew/crust/bite. I recommend the salt and pepper. They're just so beautiful sliding down that wood bagel slide, I could cry. I had the classic lox sandwich (closed) and she had the turkey. The classic had just the right ratio of lox and cream cheese, I feel many places just pile it high for presentation. While that looks good on your Insta, doesn't eat well. This place gets it right. Turkey sandwich was wonderful too. I can't say I was a huge fan of the jalapeno jelly as it was pretty sweet, but that's more of a personal issue than a hard truth. Decide for yourself. $20 for two bagel sandwiches and an order of the deviled eggs, which was plenty of food for the two of us. THE VIBE: Good vibes. In the past six months, I have been to Beauty's a countless number of times. It's outstanding -- everything I've ever tried (the veggie bagel, the egg + cheese bagel, omelets, fried chicken, etc.) is of high quality and delicious. I'd argue that the Flying Goat coffee is the best in the area. It's dependably great -- an unusual and awesome quality. Is it popular? Yes. But I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for a table because, duh, it doesn't take long to eat a bagel. It's so irritating to read Yelp reviews that seem to be about everything BUT the food or service -- and honestly, the number of these type of reviews is making Yelp less and less relevant. Wow! The crust on these lovelies are out of this world. Just a bit of snap, and then the most satisfying toothsome resistance. I'm a purist, I like my bagels naked, maybe with a bit of tan from a toaster. Beauty's doesn't need toasting. I think I'm smitten with their poppy seed bagels. *****Review for the BAGELS ONLY!!***** I've known about Beauty's Bagels for a few years now since first trying them at Wise Son's Deli on 24th Street. I didn't like them back then, but I thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt having been transported across the Bay and the bagels seem to be loved by others. So, I was in the neighborhood getting jajangmyun from Yuyu's across the street and stopped in to grab an everything and a garlic bagel to go. I tried them later in the day, toasting and schmearing them. The bagels were nicely covered in their respective toppings on both sides (much appreciated), but too dry for my taste and didn't have the delicious chewiness I've come to expect from bagels. These bagels were too reminiscent of dry toast and it makes me depressed to have to continue my search for a decent bagel in San Francisco/the Bay Area. read more

Let me preface this review by saying, as soon as we went into the shop and sat at the table drinking coffee after we ordered our food, I was feeling good. The decor was cute, and the coffee was good, so I was feeling pretty excited for my classic lox bagel sandwich, with tofu creme cheese even. "I'm gonna come here all the time!" I naively thought. When we got our food, well,.. to say I was disappointed is an understatement. The bagel itself was so dense. I felt like I was chewing it forever. The lox was good (but not great), and there was barely any tofu creme cheese on it. I got it closed face cos I didn't want to have to pay 12 or 13 dollars for a bagel sandwich. Okay, so I was disappointed with my food. My gf had an omelette which she liked, and her bagel had a lot of creme cheese on it. Okay, I'll get myself a treat, I thought. I ordered a soy hot chocolate (yes, I am lactose intolerant). When I got my hot chocolate it seriously tasted like steamed soy milk with a very very subtle taste of chocolate. I get that there are bigger things in the world to be upset about, but after a stressful week, I was looking forward to a nice Saturday brunch with my gf. As we were leaving and I felt like some sort of big baby drinking steamed milk, my gf asked if I wanted to go back to complain about the lack of cocoa in my hot chocolate. "Nah, I'll just write a yelp review," I said. It was too tiring to imagine going back to get weird hipster attitude from the barista. 2 stars for the food, but I added an extra star for the decor (hipster, but I did like it) and the fact that they have tofu creme cheese. Asked for everything wheat bagel w/fried egg breakfast sandwich. Instead got wheat everything bagel NOT toasted, no cheese, and separate cold fried egg in a container. Guess the employee don't know the restaurant menu. read more
