Trust me, there is salmon in here. Somewhere. I think.
    Dan C.

At this tiny tiny storefront (no seating) you can walk in and hand pick the bagel you want from what is available in a few bushel-type baskets before giving it to the staff to dress up. I'm not really sure how the Health Dept allows this. There are three types of salmon to choose from: regular, smoked and spicy (not hot spicy), which was a new experience for me. I ordered spicy salmon with scallion cream cheese - if you're accustomed to getting overloaded bagels that fill you up, what you get here is like an hors d'oeuvre. It's a bit skimpy. However the scallion cream cheese was excellent and the Roma tomatoes were a welcomed departure from the unripe versions seen everywhere. It tastes great. But since it was so small I wish I had ordered extra salmon. And the coffee is good. But in other areas they fall short: having only Lipton tea? That's pathetic. No half-sour pickles, only sour. And instead of biodegradable (wood/bamboo?) stirring sticks they have only plastic knives, which is idiotic. Stirring a beverage and tossing away the knife feels less than single-use. Pretty disappointing. So would I return? Yes, I'll give it a 2nd shot. But I'm going to price the extra salmon and then calculate if it's better to go to nearby competitors who have quite a range of offerings, and I'm not talking about corn flake cereal, which this place seems to specialize in so much they line the walls with it (!).

The one NY bagel I had on my most recent trip, and it did not disappoint. I got an everything bagel with lox, scallion cream cheese, tomato, onion, and lettuce and it was absolutely delicious. The bagel itself had the right amount of chew on the outside, a soft interior, and a hint of maltiness. The interior ingredients were fresh, very well-balanced, and paired beautifully. Reading these other reviews, looks like I'll have to try the fried lox sometime...

Family owned and kind to me. Staple if you're in the area... especially since you know the bagel is authentic. Best bagel I ever had.... Even gave me a pastry because I'm pretty

$5.50 for a petite sized bagel with cream cheese, could've gone done the road to a deli and got a bacon and egg and cheese for that price. Bagel was good but prices are insane. Would've been nice if it was more than 5 bites, that's over a $1 per bite of bread.

Really good bagels and super friendly service! Pro tip: they are closed on saturdays. They also don't do bacon egg n cheese here

As far as the customer service goes I wish it was a bit better. The staff aren't the most pleasant. No good morning no acknowledgement of comprehending what you order they just walk away and start the order. Which is why I double check always. I do notice they speak more pleasantly to other customers that come in. Not sure if it's a culture thing or could they be discriminatory but it's a bit unsettling. Food: 3.8/5 I only order the poppy seed bagel and that's pretty tasty. Not to doughy although I do have them take out a good portion of the bread because I like it to be extremely thin. We wanted to try something different after having explored so many of the typical places in Manhattan and Shelsky's came highly recommended While I was expecting a long wait on a Saturday mid-morning, I was pleasantly surprised to find the establishment with only a few in line before us. Now, I was desperately seeking a very simple belly lox with schmear, but much to my dismay, they didn't have any more belly lox. I was heartbroken and had to figure out a plan B While I pondered, the family quickly ordered a Peter Shelsky, a Great Gatsby, and a Fancy Pants. I crumbled in my panic and jumped in with another Peter Shelsky. We also tried a small amount of whitefish salad and a beet/thyme salad The service was quick and we were able to grab two of the three small tables at the front to enjoy our fare. Soon we were digging in and from the immediate silence, I could tell everyone was enjoying their choices. The bagels were on the smaller side, denser with a firm crust. We did enjoy the bagels, but I could see how someone not familiar with this style may find them too "cardboard-y" I have to say, the pickled herring on the Peter Shelsky was fantastic, but was way too overpowering for the nova and sable. I actually regretted my choice and would order something more sunken next time. (Or get to the store earlier to beat the rush for the darn belly lox!) The beet salad was quite a nice balance to for the bagels adding a bit of brightness. The whitefish salad was solid - a hint of smoke and a creamy puree. Some who prefer a chunkier whitefish salad might find this less than satisfactory, but the flavors were great A cure store, friendly and patient staff, a great first exposure to Brooklyn for the boys. We'll be back (and we want belly lox!!)
